"Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses This architectural, horticultural, and culinary masterpiece in the eastern New Zealand town of Kaikoura consists of a main lodge as well as five modern wood cabins stilted above the treetops. It’s no surprise that Hapuku’s owners, the Wilson family, have five generations of architecture experience. Not only did they realize their goal of helping guests stay among the birds, they placed the tree houses, each one named after a different local bird species, just right so the folds of the Kaikoura Mountain Range look almost superimposed in the background. On the same property, they also run a deer farm, an olive-oil producing orchard, and an ever-expanding collection of gardens that burst with native plants and trees. The attention to detail seen in the architecture and design extends to every aspect of the guest experience. Windows are double-glazed to block out the sound of deer in mating season; the scratch kitchen cooks everything, including ice cream and peanut butter; and all the shrubbery around the main lodge mimics the natural landscape. The lodge also sets strict environmental standards, including the commitment to plant one native plant or tree for every night a guest stays on the property. A certificate is mailed to guests so they’ll know the name of the species planted and be able to track its growth on Google Earth."
Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses | Best places to stay in New Zealand
"Occupying a narrow coastal strip between the Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean, this luxury lodge provides an unrivalled base from which to explore the Kaikoura region, famous for its ecotours.
The five treehouses – quirky, rustic but brilliantly furnished – are mounted 30 feet above the ground, all come with jaw-dropping ocean and alpine views, open fires and deep baths. Three have one bedroom, 2 family ones with separate bedrooms for kids.
The treehouses perfectly capture the spirit of the place; indeed, the whole property (which includes four lodge suites, a lap pool and sauna) seems at one with the landscape.
There’s a great in-house restaurant too, serving local specialities, notably seafood, accompanied by locally sourced and even home-grown ingredients.
Kaikoura town is a 20-minute drive away, so as well as a quirky, memorable place to stay, it is sufficiently close for access to Kaikoura’s whale-watching, dolphin swimming and other eco-adventures.

Unbelievable experience, I can’t recommend visiting enough. An intimate setting where every detail is thought through and goes together perfectly. Staff go above and beyond to provide a wonderful, luxurious stay. The facilities are stunning, flawless tree houses, bird song throughout the property, delicious food catered for dietary needs (vegan). A truly special place that if you are lucky enough to come to, you will not regret.

Our stay here was epic! The tree houses give gorgeous views of the property and deer. It has large windows surrounding the room but complete privacy. The food here is amazing and don’t miss a chance to eat here!! The gardens on property are used in preparing the meals and the staff participate in harvesting the olives and making small batch, delicious olive oil. I would return again and again! The staff are so friendly.

The treehouse was fantastic…unique accommodation that was brilliantly designed, comfortable and provided a great stay. The food was also exceptional, with good choices and great quality. We really appreciated the early breakfast on our last morning and opening the kitchen a half an hour early for us. The public facilities were top notch. The service from Janet and Mike was incredible and genuine, with Mike’s martini quite memorable. So, why not 5 star? There was a really strange manager-like person who seems clueless about hospitality. He fawned over the only other guest in the dining room one night, seated the other couple the second night, and came into the lounge twice while we were having pre-dinner cocktails and stared at us and left. But he didn’t have the common courtesy to introduce himself, welcome us, or see how our stay was. This creepiness and rudeness ruined an otherwise flawless stay.

A unique architecture and wonderful place to stay. Better than some 5 star hotels I have experienced. Quietly luxurious with exceptional service.
Half Board accommodation is a first experience for me. Loved every meal. Appreciated the daily changing menu and the accommodation of our requests.
The gardens are beautiful as is the walk to the sea. Loved the view of the deer in front of the mountain peaks. Rainy, cloudy days were also quite beautiful.
Thank you to all the staff and the kitchen who made our stay so memorable.

Possibly the best small boutique accommodation experienced in our many visits to NZ. Second visit this year confirmed the first: great staff, decor, restaurant and facilities. Eclectic art, textiles and furniture everywhere. Loved the sauna / cold plunge / heated pool / jacuzzi combination. Generous complimentary Ata Rangi Pinot Noir in the rooms, together with cookies and grind your own coffee beans. Reasonable rate inclusive of excellent breakfast and dinner. No complaints!

Absolutely loved our stay at Hapuku Lodge! From the moment we arrived, the place had such a warm and welcoming vibe.
The rooms were gorgeous – super spacious, stunning views of the mountains and greenery, and we especially loved the unique treehouse-style setup & the pool area.
The team there really made us feel at home – super friendly and always ready to help with anything we needed. The food was amazing too – fresh, local, and seriously delicious.
It’s such a peaceful spot, perfect for unwinding with the family.
We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Kaikōura.
Highly recommend if you’re after a relaxing, high-end experience with a down-to-earth feel.

To sit in the beautiful room overlooking the mountains and the deer herd was simply magical. It was raining but we still enjoyed just watching the deer. Bed was comfy and room was quiet (we were in a room upstairs in the main lodge). We appreciated the complementary wine, snacks and drinks. But the real hero is the chef. Our dinner was OUTSTANDING - a real culinary masterpiece. And I’m not a big breakfast enthusiast but the egg/hummus/toast combo ranks as one of my fave breakfasts ever. We hope to come back!

Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses was easily one of the most memorable places we’ve ever stayed. Tucked up in the trees just outside Kaikōura, the treehouses are beautifully designed with floor-to-ceiling windows, cozy fireplaces, and private decks overlooking the mountains and ocean. The rooms had everything we needed—king bed, spa bath, full fridge, even fresh-baked cookies waiting when we arrived. It felt both luxurious and peaceful, like nature and comfort perfectly blended.
The food was another highlight—every meal felt thoughtful and local, and the service was warm without being over the top. It’s also a great base if you want to explore the coast or do a whale-watching tour (which we loved). Honestly, whether you’re celebrating something or just needing a reset, I can’t recommend this place enough.
