Great place the food was amazing fried green beans the trio steak fried mushrooms... the place was great on the eyes I only gave 3 to service our waitress was nice and accommodating but everyone was just wearing whatever t-shirt and shorts they felt like wearing I was kinda expecting a work outfits and our apatizers came with our meal not prior other than that check em out!

Very disappointed with everything. The hottest portion of the "meal" were the breadsticks that arrived after our meal was done. If you're a local you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. We were seated in the bar area. Conversations and service all around us between bar staff and local customers. We waited over 45 minutes for our order. Whitefish was barely warm, prime rib was warm, vegetables cold. Never offered refill on our pop. Overall not a pleasant experience. If we ever get back to the UP this will not be our list.

posting this review because I want other travelers to not get their hopes up. We called at 5pm to set a reservation for 6:30. (Their website says to please give them an hour) Our group arrived at 6:20 and the waitress said they gave away our reservation to another group but could seat us upstairs. Ok, fine. We sit upstairs, no a/c, no fans, hot. Waitress comes to get our drink order after we had been seated for 10 mins. 20 mins go by, we still have no drinks, a member from our group goes downstairs- brings our beers up. (Beer was cold) Another member from group and myself go to see how busy restaurant is. One table is only waiting on food and others have finished up. It is now 7:20 and we are just placing our order. tell her we need split checks and order in that split order. We order apps but no silverware is brought to us. No refill on drinks. No waters after asking to each get one. Still in the sauna that is the upstairs. We see an open table and ask to move downstairs. We asked for waters for the table multiple times. Food arrives, it’s good. We still don’t have silverware. They forgot about the kids meal that was ordered and by the time it finally came out- we were finished with dinner. The other waitress kept saying she’s in training but never offered to help. After dinner was finished we asked for bill. Waitress asked how we would like bill split. 🙃 Horrible experience but thankful for good company. We left the restaurant at 8:57 as we had a 6:30 reservation. Good food but horrible service.

What a surprising gem. It is worth the stop. Amazing food, amazing customer service, and beautiful atmosphere! Everything was perfect! The salad was one of the freshest salads I’ve had in a long time. The steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly. And the garlic mashed potatoes and the Apple crisp were wonderful!

I hate to leave the review at a 2. The food was absolutely amazing. Atmosphere was cozy, kind of loud but totally expected for a bar. The service however, was so bad that I don’t think we ever want to go back again. Coming from a person that works in restaurant/retail in a small town, I get some days are worse than others, but really? We get like maybe 5-6 sips of our fountain drinks, when we asked for refills our waitress snapped at us that we need to pay extra for refills. And if that wasn’t bad enough, even the table next to us was having the same issue with the SAME WAITRESS. They had to have been waiting a really long time because they were still waiting by the time we sat down. I think if we got a different waitress things would’ve been much better.

Love the cozy atmosphere! The food was incredible and the service was so hospitable and friendly ! We will be back for sure!

had the prime rib was pretty good thick piece with a lot of fat, however the service was horrendous the waiter took forever to get us our drinks (3 people where standing behind the bar talking while people were waiting)was snappy about only being allowed one refill ( not to mention how the ice to drink ratio was) and just not very friendly attitude, over heard at the table next to us a guy get his steak cold when asked how everything was, all she did was walk away and make a face.

This was my second time at Hardwood Steakhouse and it did not disappoint. Our waitress, Kirsten, was great! She was nice and provided great service. Our table was upstairs, so she was up and down the stairs with our drinks and food all night long. Once we were seated, we were greeted with menus and told the specials. If you like root beer, you have to try the root beer! They carry 1919 root beer. It's impossible to find unless you're in the UP. It's made with real vanilla and cane sugar. The flavor is on point. For dinner, a handful of us ordered the prime rib and the all you can eat sea bass. The prime rib is a Friday and Saturday special. The all you can eat sea bass is for fish fry Friday. My husband got the fish. It comes with a side and coleslaw, but they didn't have all the ingredients so it was subbed with a side salad. My husband got the sweet potato mash with his fish fry. He definitely enjoyed the all you can eat option. For dinner, I got the petite prime rib cut and added mushrooms and onions. My dinner came with a side and salad too. I enjoyed my meat!

Service was really slow food wasn't cooked right. The cod was still cold in the center. My steak was over cooked. Never coming back.

Greta meal, and Manager Matthew was a star- pay that man more! He was making it happen! The staff there were friendly, and Courtney had a wonderful smile. The onion Chips (like onion rings but big chunks lol f onion), were great. The burger was perfect, and we would eat here again in a heartbeat. Prices were a little high, but acceptable for a steakhouse. Thank you!

Last time we were in it lacked in most areas not sure what happened? Went back 2x and was same situation soooo decided won't be back and haven't been in over 6-8 months. To bad.

We stopped here on a Monday afternoon on our way home and had the best time. We sat in the bar and locals congregated around us. Folks were friendly and quite lovely. It took a minute to order lunch but I think it's bare bones staffing on a Monday afternoon. The food was very tasty and reasonably priced. We had lunch options (not the full menu) but I don't think that's a big surprise--lunch versus dinner menu. I'd go back for sure.

Worst service ever. For starters it WASN'T busy we sat and waited for about 20 mins just to get menu's. It was 12:15 and they said they weren't serving dinners yet because the cook wasn't ready. One couple walked out because no one waited on them for 15 mins after they got menu's. Another couple walked out because they were waiting 45 mins for there food! We waited about 35 mins for our food and I specifically said NO mushrooms and mine had mushrooms. My bfs sandwich was also cold. ALSO! One of the girls waitressing stole $20 out of the til! Lastly when we asked for out bill she said okay then walked out and we looked at her and she's like did you guys want your bill? Like yes we just asked you for it. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

A great dinning experience, beautiful building, great service and simply the best food around. Everyone there is friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend!

amazing food options, great service, relaxing environment. The turkey sandwich on sourdough bread was delicious & fries are really good. My son had the chicken parmesan which came with salad and bread. Out of the way cute log cabin that is well worth the visit if your on your way to or from Canyon River Falls

It was okay. Made a reservation but it really made no difference. Waited at the bar for awhile until a table cleared off and then sat there. The prime rib was large but a little tough. The roasted veggies were very good. All in all it was just okay.

Worst service plus long waiting (~1.5 hour for a pasta) for the dishes. We drove by this place and wanted to order their steak dishes, but guess what, they didn't have any. Hope they can be more respectful to customers.

My parents and I frequent this restaurant when we are up at our cabin. Usually the food and service are very good and speedy. Today, when visiting the service was extremely slow. When we entered the restaurant there was one other party. Our food took over an hour to be served. We had a good view of the kitchen and there seemed to be confusion and the waitress never put in our order. We were the only people in the restaurant at this point. We had to go find our waitress in when our food was up as she was chatting at the bar. Our waitress also asked if we wanted refills and then never brought them until she was reminded. During all of this there were several tables that were dirty never cleared and cleaned. I don't know what happened to the quality and service that we had come to expect. Hopefully next time we come in things will be back to their previous high standards.

They deserve a much higher Yelp average than shown. Not just a steak place, they had a variety of fresh fish! Fish and steak were great. Service was great too. This restaurant felt like an important location for locals where we too were welcomed. Atmosphere was fitting and clean. We'll absolutely return when traveling in this region.

Traveling across to Duluth and needed a place to take a break. Wonderful Ruben and French dip! Nice cold beer and wine cooler. Refreshed and on our way again in no time. Excellent! Thank you!

We went in for a beer, and everyone at the bar was very friendly. We ordered the fried mushrooms and they were great. We will have to go back again for a meal. ALERT: The Yelp map shows the wrong location for this restaurant. Copy and paste the address provided into Google Maps to ensure you get to this location. Our five mile drive on a dirt road was not enjoyable, because of Yelp.

For the remote location this place was a good find for breakfast. It looks like someone's log home until you walk in. The sliding doors were open to let In a nice morning breeze. I had the country skillet which was delicious and my wife had the Belgium waffles with strawberries which she loved. The coffee was meh and the service was quite slow but I attribute that to a rush of four families being seated at the same time. Overall experience was good.

If you only read 1 review, DON'T GO THERE. Went on a non busy Sunday night to find 1 waitress and no A/C. Went there to get a steak, and decided on a sandwich. After waiting for over an hour, I was told that they couldn't make my meal and wanted me to order something else. My wife is still waiting for her meal. I don't write reviews, but DON'T GO THERE.

The service here is pretty slow, even when we were the only ones in the restaurant. That's probably because there were only 2 people working (one server and one in the kitchen), so it was understandable. I have only been here for breakfast, and the options are limited, but they do the skillets well. I always get the one with sausage gravy and it just hits the spot. You can call in your order before you come in and then just have it ready when you get there. We saw someone do that once. It's the only place to eat really in this area of the U.P.

Excellent friendly atmosphere in the middle of nowhere UP! The food was excellent and a lot of food is made in house. The fries I had with my chicken asiago sandwhich were clearly fresh. They have KBS on tap here too, which is a nice find! I will be returning for sure!

This place is a must whenever we are up at camp. Great food and friendly service, always. if you are from any kind of "city" and expecting such service and food you still will not be disappointed. and if you are in any way disappointed, then it's you that needs to do some soul searching. this place has proven to be time and time again a great place to get yummy food and if you're any kind of cool-can get along with the waitstaff. we don't live here but have a camp nearby and come here at least once during our stay b/c of the tastiness of the food. don't be so pretentiousl ppl!! it's dang tasty food and well worth the drive where-ever you come from. Probably not far!

This used to be our go to stop for lunch and dinner, little over an hour from our house. In a a little over a year this place has transformed itself to a poor service, food quality, and dirty restaurant and bar. To start, the gravel parking area hasn't seen any gravel or grading in well over a year, easy to twist an ankle just getting in. Once inside you notice the seating that is worn and cracked sitting on what appears to be black carpeting speckled with dropped food or what was wiped off the tables. The real color of the carpeting is a light tan as it appears in the prep/coffee area. Once you sit down and look up you will be greeted by dusty and dirty beams and drapes. I will not even address the restrooms condition. I got the salad bar with my meal, checked it out and the only thing that was kept up on was the lettuce. Three of the containers were empty, another three only had enough for a plate or two and the three weren't salad toppings at all, e.g. coleslaw, cottage cheese..... As often as the staff went to it to check it out you would think someone would either remove the empty containers or refill them, nope. Put in our order, told everything was available and there are no specials, hamburgers are always good. Five minutes later I get told that the special is no longer available.???? I change my order. Twenty minutes later we get our food; there are only four other people eating besides us. I guess that was the cook sitting outside having smoke. The food was mediocre at best. We had water to drink, waiter left a pitcher of tap water with no ice on our table, no a/c in this place, close to 90's outside and they have a fan blowing at us. Not a very attentive server overall, maybe she is new, she seems totally unsure of herself and unaware of what you get with what meals. I will give her a pass, because I think she was tossed into this w/o any training. Final thoughts, unfortunately I can't recommend this place and we will not be returning. We are taking it off our group stops and will stop recommending it to anyone. I would recommend that the local county health department stop on in and check it out. I am sad to see this place in this disrepair, circling the toilet bowl. I hope the owners take notice and take some actions and pull this previous gem out of a serious nose dive.

My wife had Friday night prime rib special, with roasted shrimp. I had the sirloin trio steak special. She loved the prime rib, we both loved the shrimp and I had excellent steak, the best in a long time! Great service too. Will definitely be back.

Every time we have gone, OUTSTANDING FOOD Service is GOOD also. Prices, you can't BEAT. Have to have their French Onion soup.

My favorite steakhouse when I'm not cooking on my own backyard grill. Candy who owns the restaurant watches carefully over all of the preparations and runs an excellent eatery. One of my favorites has been the steak sampler platter along with a cold KBC Widow Maker from their bar.

Food was great but the service was lacking!! They were too busy socializing than service! We're too busy to give us napkins or silverware. Had to go to the bar to get them !

My family has a hunting cabin in this area, and I come for a week even summer. There are not to many places to choose from within a short ride from our cabin, but this is one of the places. This year we happened to be up at the cabin in my birthday and my husband decided to take me here to celebrate. Upon arriving we were the only ones on the dining side. The bar had a few people at it. We ordered diet pop to drink. I had a steak w/baked potato and veggies. Husband had some sort of chicken pasta dish. Both of us had the salad bar. First, the pops were flat. No fizz. Mentioned to our server who "checked " on it but found no problem. My steak was good. Small, but cooked medium like I asked. Baked potato was undercooked. Hard as a rock. Veggies were soggy. You could tell they must had been frozen for a long time. Husband enjoyed his pasta. Salad bar was ok. Nothing to write home about, but not horrible. My main reason for only 2 stars was the cleanliness. We sat at a corner table, and the amount of cobb webb next to us was horrible. Our family cabin is also a log cabin, and I understand how easily cobb webb appear, but if you own a restaurant, have your staff take 5 min a day to rid the dinning room of them. I can over look okayish food..but for $50 I expect a clean place to eat. Northern woods area or in the middle of a city.

This was our first experience at the Hardwood Steak House, it was a good one! The service was very good, the salad bar was fresh and clean with many items to choose from. The French Onion soup was very tasty along with the homemade ordered bread and garlic butter, the New York Strip which was done to a medium like it was ordered, tasty cut of meat, the shrimp scampi added to the order was homemade and very good. Vegetables were very well prepared also. The mashed garlic mashed potatoes were the way i like em with peelings in them! But they did lack some seasoning, not really tasting like garlic, butter or much of any thing. Some salt, pepper, sour cream and a little garlic and the would have been a home run! For a place in the middle of God's Country it was well above average, i would go back again with others. Also the entertainment up in the bar area was good, family bantering- it was dinner and a show! See you next time!

Terrible. Absolutely terrible. There was one other table in the entire restaurant, and it took an hour and a half to get two burgers to our table. The fries were old, cold and soggy. Even the water sucked, it tasted like rust. On top of that, our server was very impersonal and had no sense of priority. There was no silverware at our table, nor were we offered any. The floor was dirty, with old food spread about it. A one star rating is a generous one at this point.

Delightful find! Absolutely wonderful meal, prime rib was perfect. My husbands filet was great too. Friendly service and excellent atmosphere. If it wasn't 450 miles from home, I would be glad to visit again. :)

A challenge to find when we used Google Maps... Had us going around in circles trying to put us on dirt roads. We persisted and found it. Worth the effort. Located on M-28 in Covington - NOT old M-28. 1 mile west of Covington intersection on M-28 going towards Bruce Crossing. Enjoyed a great bowl of French onion soup. Hubby had the Red Reuben with fries. Not your everyday regular Reuben. This one stands out from the rest. Great slices of corned beef with a sweet and sour red cabbage instead of the regular sauerkraut. Fries were handcut with skins on them. I enjoyed a chef salad - was quite a large portion. Enough to take some home. Came with thin-sliced ham and turkey deli-type lunch meat with hard boiled egg slices, two different cheeses and onions. Could have used some more salad variety - tomatoes, cucumbers and greens. Had mainly iceberg lettuce. The ranch dressing was great! Great coffee and friendly service. Be aware that the dinner menu (steaks, etcetera) doesn't start until 4:00 p.m. Looking forward to our next visit to try the steaks.
