The 38 Essential Amsterdam Restaurants

"Contrary to popular belief, Dutch herring is not raw but rather salt-cured — although the complex curing process does give it a raw finish on the tongue. Haring & Zo is one of the few stalls left in Amsterdam these days where you can taste traditional, first-of-the-season herring, called Hollandse nieuwe, usually available starting in early June. Order one au naturel, or opt for the classic accompaniments of raw chopped onion and pickles." - Monique van Loon

Absolutely worth seeking out! Haring & Zo serves up Dutch herring the way it’s meant to be. fresh, clean, flavorful, and absolutely loaded with onions and pickles just like it should be. The stand may be small, but the quality is big. I stopped for the classic herring and left wondering why I hadn’t tried it sooner. It’s simple, traditional, and absolutely delicious. Super friendly service and plenty of options if you want something fried or smoked too. Don’t skip this if you’re curious about authentic local eats in Amsterdam.

Here, you can taste Amsterdam's very authentic pickled herring sandwich and fish and chips. It's a small shop, but the food is incredibly delicious. Be aware that if you're paying by card, there might be an additional fee. If you're passing by, it's definitely worth a try!

Google
This stand has the CLEANEST haring that I have had in Amsterdam. I have long term ate the Haring here with no dysentery! Nearly everyday I grab a sandwich. The fish is perfect and very affordable. Personally I go for a sandwich with pickles and onions on dark bread. LIFESAVER.

Google
It was such a random find for me !!!! Bumped into this small pop up shop by chance. Checked the reviews and had to get it. The herring is awesome and 100% worth getting more than one sandwich. No wonder this place has such high reviews and the herring tastes fantastic with the pickles and onions. Then tried the salmon too. It’s as good as the herring one. Get it if ur in Amsterdam.

Fresh fish and super quick service (no wait at all)! Great snack while exploring Amsterdam. There’s an option to get onions and pickles. They accept foreign cards but I think there might be a 20 cent fee. Didn’t get a picture cause we ate it too fast :)

Fried Codfish was delicious, the tartar sauce that came with it was even better. I didn't like the Haring fish very much because I couldn't taste it and it was too salty.

Google
Lovely guy with lots of "thank you"s. And also really nice haring and really tasty pickles. It was my first try and I loved it. Price was around 4 5 euros.

So simple and delicious. The herring is so delicious, it's soft and mild, so it definitely needs the onion and the pickles. The crab salad was not that great, though.

Yelp
This looks to be the place to go if you want authentic pickled herring. You can order it plated with onions and pickles or as a sandwich. Super quick stop food counter. The friendly guy at the counter took my order and he was done plating before I had my wallet out. Great quality fish and paired well with the condiments! FYI: there is a small surcharge if you want to pay by credit card.

Yelp
I am obsessed with Hollandse Nieuwe (new herring) that only has a short season. Basically May thru June. I was in Amsterdam recently and I must have gone to this place 7 times! It's just great fresh herring with onions and pickles but somehow it' transforms into one of the best tasting snack/lunch. Haring and Zo is highly rated and is one of the top 10 places for new herring.

Yelp
Raw herring is a must-have delicacy when you are in Amsterdam. It can be a bit off-putting seeing as it is essentially raw fish that has been pickled. I live to eat weird stuff, so I knew that I had to try this unique delicacy. I ordered the raw herring plate with onions and pickles, not knowing what to expect. The fish itself is a bit slimy, but the the texture is on-par with eating canned sardines. The fish is salty and really pairs well with the onions and pickles. I don't think that I will be ordering another one anytime soon, but I understand the appeal and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to try something new.

Yelp
UGHHHH! I'm so upset that we don't have this kind of street food at home, nor can I find it anywhere - been craving it since I first tasted it here! Out of all the stands in the city, we stumbled upon this one, and it turns out it's rated as one of the best, if not THE best, in Amsterdam, and they lived up to their reputation. I do eat sashimi (raw fish)/sushi, so the idea and texture of raw herring didn't bother me at all. Even my husband, who does not usually a seafood eater, didn't find it too bad. I, on the other hand, absolutely loved it. If you think it's anything like the jarred pickled herring you see in grocery stores in North America, you are absolutely wrong. The fish is extremely fresh, and therefore not very fishy at all, and the texture is actually quite firm. I only ordered one piece of fish, no sandwich, just to taste. It was pre-sliced into bite-sized pieces and came with with a couple of toothpicks, chopped raw onions, and crinkle-cut pickles that were not sweet like I expected. Very simple, very fresh, very affordable, and great customer service at the stand. Highly recommended, even for the non-seafood eater!

Yelp
I'm a huge sushi lover - I'm not squeamish about eating raw fish - but it's a bit easier to stomach the sight of neat little rectangular blocks of sashimi than watching the fishmonger clean and filet the fish in front of you. This feels more real & raw. It reminded of the scene in Lord of the Rings when Gollum grabs a fish out of the river and just tears into it. I used a toothpick instead of my hands like Gollum, but y'know what - I get it - raw herring is totally delicious. It's soft & fatty with an easy flavour - not slimy at all. The onions & pickles really went well. 10/10 would eat again and every day.

Yelp
Five stars, ten stars, two thumbs up - whatever the rating, some of the best raw herring you'll ever have. So in all the Amsterdam guide books, they always talk about getting the herring. There's arguably no better place to get it than at Haring & Zo. Served fresh and raw, I think it grosses out most people. If you're one of those people, get over it and try it. The fish is taken out and gutted right in front of you (so you know it's good) then sliced and served on a small plate with onions and pickles. The fish isn't the slightest hint of old or slimy - it's firm, juicy, and delicious, and perfectly complimented by the onions and pickles. If you're still on the fence, I;m here to push you over - definitely give it a try. You won't regret it and you can tell your friends you had a true Amsterdam food staple.

Yelp
Fantastic Herring. Honestly a must try spot - fresh, raw and yummy! May think a big brick and mortar restaurant or fish market could be better, but you'd be wrong. This goodness should be in every city.

Yelp
I don't even like herring normally, but this was delicious. We also got the baked cod and with a Coke Zero it was only EUR9.

Yelp
Fine herring or haring any Russian wife or mother would approve of. A+ for tasty a bit complicated to find. It's located on the street.
