Where to Eat in Footscray, Melbourne’s Most Exciting Food Neighborhood | Eater

"A revived pub and diner opened by disciples of a well-known Melbourne chef, offering a family-friendly atmosphere with natural wine, mortadella, woodfired pizzas and focaccia; it’s become a hub for newcomers where parents sip local beer while kids enjoy a dedicated children’s menu." - Jess Ho

***update*** I received an email with an apology and voucher after this review which I didn’t expect at all. I will visit and give it another try with my friends. Next time I’ll avoid busy time and order other popular dishes. Thank you staff for your response anyway. ************* I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant after seeing positive reviews about the quality of food and service. Overall it was disappointing except pizzas and chips. The heirloom tomato salad was soggy and lukewarm, the chopped broccoli salad was very salty and the sandy texture of raw quinoa?(not sure what they were) had no harmony with other ingredients (I barely complain about salad as I love any kinds of salad). And the squid ink pasta was like….. it was a joke considering its price $37. Unlike other photos, the squid ink pasta was cooked in a tomato based sauce which tasted bland and a bit smelly with small pieces of mussels without shells. It was served in a small bowl so the appearance was also poor. Pizza margarita and a pizza with fennel sausage were good though my husband felt the pizza sauce was a bit watery and less flavourful. Chips were perfectly fried and the aioli sauce was nice. Staff were friendly and the busy yet lively atmosphere was pleasant. I don’t know if we were just unlucky to have a chef who is normally not cooking for main dishes??? I may try one more time but not in the near future.

Service and the pizzas were top notch at this establishment. The Pasta was good the first time I came but the second time it was really watery and not enjoyable. Still giving it a 5 star because of how good the pizzas were and the service. Chips were also a good snacking tool

Food was ok. Some gluten free options. Service was good. Pizza was a bit light on with toppings. We strangely got caught in the middle of a trivia night where people were in random parts of the dining area. We felt we couldn't really speak to much for fear of interrupting the game.

It's busy, it's noisy, and has really great food 😎 Most people order pizza but my favourites are the rosemary garlic bread with curds (stracciatella really) and the chicken schnitzel (better than any pub version and arguably healthier). Update: the Chicken Parma special on Tuesday nights is a far cry from the regular chicken schnitzel on the a la carte menu, so don't confuse the two.

We visited Harley and Rose on Mother’s Day and were treated to a special menu that truly impressed. The buckwheat bread, baked in the wood oven, was outstanding—crusty, flavorful, and perfectly warm. The mushroom gratin was rich and comforting, and the Caesar salad with ruspant chicken was simply stellar. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor.

Love this place. Very family friendly! We have both dined in and had takeout and the food is spectacular. We love ordering their fresh pizzas for family movie nights in. At the weekend we had a table right by the pizza oven and my little one was entranced by the sheer amount of fresh pizzas being made. Team are super friendly and lovely too. Highly recommend the rosemary bread and if you're not feeling pizza, the gnocchi is a stunner! Can't wait to go back.

Just got back from dinner at Harley & Rose, the pizzas here are phenomenal, you must order the cod dip to go with it and the entree octopus dish was so good!! Spacious restaurant for families with kids and a great catch up place in back outdoor area. Love the music and good vibes. Can't wait to return! 🍕

Harley & Rose offers some of the best pizza in Melbourne, making it a top spot for pizza lovers. Their menu is packed with delicious options, but the standout is definitely the fungus pizza—rich, flavorful, and absolutely must-try. Each bite showcases the perfect balance of toppings and a crispy, well-cooked crust. While the pizzas are exceptional, the tiramisu leaves something to be desired with its unusual taste, which might not appeal to everyone. Despite this, the overall dining experience at Harley & Rose is fantastic, with a cozy atmosphere and attentive service. If you’re in Melbourne and craving pizza, Harley & Rose is the place to go, especially for their incredible fungus pizza.
