The Best Cheap Eats in Ottawa - Eater Montreal

"Ottawa’s Chinatown is actually better for Vietnamese food, but just five minutes over, Harmony does sweet and spicy Cantonese and Szechuan dishes with flair, around the $10 to $12 mark. Southern Chinese classics like chile oil beef or cumin lamb are the go-to items, but the menu is helpfully divided into “traditional Chinese” and “Canadian Chinese” for those in need of General Tao chicken and wonton soup." - Tim Forster

The restaurant was closed for a while and it’s now re-open. The ownership and the menu has changed however. I was worried about the food due to the change in ownership but I would say the restaurant taste better than before. The food is more refined. Order three dishes and they all taste good. The cold mix chicken is my favourite. I can feel the effort that is being put into each dish and the freshness of ingredient. Will definitely come back to try more food.

The special eggplant is tasted good and Laurel milk as well. The chef made Chinese food very authentic. However, rice is not good because it looks a little bit yellow and tasted not good. I think If you changed by another rice brands it would be much better.

The environment is not fancy and new, it is more like dining at home. The meals are tasty especially the Chinese burger, I love it. The fried rice and seafood pastry are a little bit too salty for us. We would like to try other meals in the future.

Unpretentious is a proper word to describe this restaurant, very low profile from the inside and out. It may look a bit scary and sketchy at first eating food from there but you’d be surprised by the amazing taste and huge selection that they have. I had the Harmony fried chicken and the house fried rice. The fried rice was to die for!

Delicious Chinese food served by friendly lady! She visited us frequently to ensure we were having a good time and food. Foods were delicious, and I would visit the restaurant again!

Got takeout from Harmony Restaurant and wasn't disappointed! It was so nice to explore/learn more of Chinese cuisine through the stir fry lamb with cumin, Cheng du deep fried spicy chicken, Szechuan style spicy fish filet. While there are certainly plenty of American Chinese food options and non-spicy dishes, it was so nice to order spicy food and be truly numbed. Can't wait to try other items on their menu!

This is my favourite Chinese restaurant in town. Very authentic, and one of the best bangs for the buck, in terms of taste, quantity, quality and price. Always try the cumin beef and lamb, you will not regret it.

A must-try and one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever tasted! Reopened since COVID with new management but same chefs as I recognize after tasting the food. Portion sizes are appropriate (slightly less than an year ago). As an Indian and a fan of Indo-Chinese food, I find Chinese food made-to-order (a la carte) in Ottawa disappointing in most places except one or two dishes. But this restaurant is at least up to the mark if not better. Cumin lamb is best but most dishes are close to perfect including traditional Chinese. Spicy crispy dry beef is not crispy but chewy and tasty. House special fried pork with green chilli is also good. All dishes are spiced perfectly - they ooze taste as we chew more. Staff are friendly and willing to help. Affordable prices. Decent for dine-ins but best for takeouts. Moderately fast service. In Ottawa, I can say Chinese buffet = Mandarin and Chinese a la carte or takeouts = Harmony.

Yelp
Wow this is a really good spot. Fresh and hot and exceptional and sketchy. The sign outside is so worn it's barely legible. We were the only white people in the joint and YOU KNOW that's a good sign. Dining room looks like a large interrogation room. Service is fine. Food was excellent. Wonton soup to start. Very good. House special fried rice. Nice! Salt n pepper shrimp. Ok. Chinese broccoli. Amazing. Lamb cumin. Fabulosity. Dry sweet n hot eggplant. UNREAL. $87 for 3 people. This place is legit. I almost gave them 5 stars but I need to go a few more times to see how consistent they are. I look forward to my next visit. Zaidian!!

Yelp
I've been here 3 times and love it, but you do have to follow some good advice embedded in the reviews to get the maximum benefit: 1) Order from the House Special or Traditional menu, not from the Canadian one. 2) Get the stir fried green beans (be forewarned that they do have meat on them) and "lamb in cumin taste". I also really like the hot and dry eggplant but know that depending on the day it can run a bit sweet - still super tasty. 3) The food is made fresh to order, so be patient. It's worth it; each dish comes out when done, and it's piping hot. 4)The prices are friendly enough that you should consider devoting one dish to experimentation. 5) Enjoy the look on your friends' faces when they take their first bite of cumin lamb. Harmony is a hole-in-the-wall gem; the food is creative, fresh, and sits well afterwards. I've stopped in on every visit I've made to Ottawa since finding it.

Yelp
Pretty good food. Extremely slow delivery. My first time eating intestine and it was done REALLY well. Loved it. The chicken wings were a little strange all chopped up and hard to pick the bones out of but tasty enough.

Yelp
Lamb in cumin taste and fried rice were delicious. Not so good was the other lamb dish or the couple hot oil beef. Typical hole in the wall Asian place with no parking.

Yelp
If you are going here for the decor or westernized Chinese food then you are going to end up very disappointed, however if you like authentic northern Chinese food this place is a real treat. Reasonable prices, large portions and excellent service are all just nice added bonuses to the delicious food. Of the 4 dishes we ordered our favourites were definitely the cumin lamb and the hot and dry eggplant, but the other two dishes were very good as well. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This place is super good. They make the food fresh so it's nice and hot. Been going here for years and don't plan on stopping. It's a hidden gem!

Yelp
Surprisingly tasty. The first two dishes made us hungry for more! We are a party of meat eaters and vegans and we got all we want! We got stir fried green bean, yushiang tofu, wheat starch cold noodle, and lamb vemicelli in hot pot! Unlimited supply of rice. Yummy yummy!

Yelp
Very authentic hole in the wall! Had their meat sandwich only $3.50 each! Great quality and well balanced flavours. The Cumin Lamb is highly recommended, tender friend lamb with onions and a strong cumin flavour, made in an authentic northern chinese taste. Excited to try more from here. Service is great! Also very traditional Chinese, you can tell that the people who run the shop treat their customers just like they would back home. Slightly unorthodox in Canada, so if you feel like they're rude or cold, don't take it personally, treat it like you're stepping into another culture ;)

Yelp
Harmony is a little hole-in-the-wall authentic Northern Chinese restaurant. They serve Northern Chinese, Szechuan, and Canadian food. Do your best to order from the real menu (not the Canadianized area of the menu) and to use chopsticks. The food in the Chinese section is MUCH more flavourful. The server/hostess was super friendly and would likely choose something if you have a flavor in mind. Recommendations: The Hot & Dry Eggplant and Yuishang Fried Tofu are full of flavor and great with a bowl of rice. The Chinese donut was also a nice addition. My only complaint was that the BBQ Pork fried rice didn't have as much pork as I was hoping for. Even so, it was pretty darn yummy. I'm looking forward to our next visit to Harmony!

Yelp
We are having a trip in Ottawa and wanted to try a Chinese restaurant. We found this one using yelp and it was not disappointing. The Liang Pi was very good. The dishes were good too.

Yelp
Some of the BEST Chinese food I've had outside China. Order from the "House Special" page (cumin lamb, hot & dry chicken, beef w/ red pepper, deep fried tofu is a MUST, hot & dry eggplant, wheat-starch cold noodle, green beans). Food is so flavourful and each dish is unique. I've brought so many friends here and it has always been a hit! BTW eating-in is much better than take-out.

Yelp
Super authentic place; almost all the clientele were Chinese, but the menu thankfully even translates their "Chinese" menu into English! Had the beef noodle soup - handmade noodles, generous portion of tender braised beef and lots of shanghai bok choy (love when meals are actually a good balance of protein/veg/carbs). The broth was lightly spicy and immensely flavourful. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
This restaurant is worth leaving the Chinatown strip for. It has excellent northern and Sichuan offerings and Canadian style Chinese food, which are separated into two different sections in the menu. The Chinese Hamburgers, Cumin Lamb, Couple's Beef, Green Beans, Hot and Dry Eggplant are all amazing choices and great for sharing. The chicken dishes are left with lots of bones to pick around, so if that's not your thing, I wouldn't order them (although they do all taste amazing!). The prices are great for Ottawa and the woman owner/server is friendly and amazing. The Canadian style Chinese food is also the cheapest, most plentiful and best tasting in the area. I highly recommend trying this place and also exploring the more challenging aspects of the menu, I haven't been disappointed yet!

Yelp
Relatively inexpensive, yes, but very "mall chinese" if you stick to the Canadian menu. Definitely have to go with the specials or chinese menu, which is hard to decipher if you are not instore.

Yelp
Disappointed. I got this for my vegetarian girlfriend, we ordered from the vegetable section (green bean stir fry) and it was covered it minced pork! They need better clarification.

Yelp
Food is great, hot, and huge servings. The hostess was polite and quick, the restaurant setting is passible. Authentic Chinese decor, just a rundown dining room in need of renovation. A great date night or (small) family dinner!

Yelp
As a typical Chinese i must say that is the best Chinese food i had in Canada ever, the service is good, and the food is traditional authentic Chinese food. Its definitely worth to go!

Yelp
The location is a bit inconvenient (parking can be an issue) and the furnishings are modest. But if you are hungry for real North Chinese cooking, Harmony is worth the effort and more. Family-run, Harmony is a friendly and happy place to enjoy authentic Chinese regional cuisine. The noodles taste of having been hand-pulled. Some dishes are far from western tastes but that is not a reason to expand one's palette with tasty dishes like tendon. The price level should encourage a bit of experimentation among the uninitiated. You won't be sorry. And for the adamantly conservative there is an extensive menu of "Chinese food for white people" including such things as General Tso's chicken and spring rolls.

Jern Y.

Yelp
The service is on the opposite end of the spectrum from homey and warm, and so is the ambiance. But that's inherent in the definition of "hole in the wall". I managed to track down the waiter and ask him what a few good dishes were. We were not disappointed. The flavors were delicious. We got a whole butter fish - but beware if you are not familiar with how to eat a whole fish. Lots of bones. We got the shrimp fried rice, and a cong you bing. Everything was scrumptious. Definitely not what I expected when I stepped foot in the place and had to write my order down on a blank piece of scratch paper. lol

Yelp
I've been several times and love the food!! They offer delicious authentic Chinese food as well as "Canadian Chinese" food. I love the hot and dry eggplant, the lamb with cumin taste, the couples beef, the fried tofu, green beans and many other delicious dishes. Best chinese food in ottawa !!

Yelp
Seriously great food. Fresh, friendly and affordable. Can't see myself going elsewhere unless it's highly recommend. So happy I found this place. Delivery is available on orders over 25$

Yelp
One of the only Chinese restaurants that I went to and didn't find my stomach hurting afterwards. Food was quite good as well, really not much to complain about besides the noisy environment on the weekends.
