"Describing Harold Black a speakeasy, while true, undersells the food. The cocktail, beer, and wine list are always interesting, but it is also worth going up the unmarked stairs and through the sliding door for dishes like watercress salad, beef short ribs, and gianduja chocolate cake." - Lisa Ruland

Attention to our table was a little shaky but the cocktails are phenomenal. We didn’t have a reservation but we were able to get a seat. Cool place. Chill music and environment.

Nice cozy place to have evening cocktails and definitely recommend making reservations as they hardly have 5 or 6 tables for seating.

No better place for romantic, secluded evenings - service, environment, drinks are above noteworthy.

Great cocktail experience, every time. The atmosphere is quiet, calm, and dim -- great for drinking with friends or a significant other (but not getting bar crazy). The drinks on the menu are great, and they are happy to make you something off-menu, or something suited to your current mood. Or shirt colour. Or favourite car. You really don't go here for the food, but the bar-food they have is pretty good as well -- the nuts and cheese plate go well will artisan cocktails.

I have several friends who recently celebrated a birthday with drinks at Harold Black and was curious if it was a true speakeasy. We were pleasantly surprised at the discrete nature of its location (which is located in an unmarked door next to a restaurant), and the fact that it's small and not noticeable to the public. The decor, glassware and whole atmosphere made for a great evening. In addition to their great cocktails, we also tried their bacon jam which was delicious. For the amount of cocktails we drank and food we ate, the bill was much less expensive than we expected. I would highly recommend this place! Definitely make a reservation as the place is small and fills up quickly.

Everything about this place is geared towards keeping the atmosphere authentic. Don't walk in without knocking and being escorted. The drinks are hand crafted from scratch so do you're in a hurry, this isn't the place for you. The presentation, the and craftsmanship is very much a part of the enjoyment of this place. Even the jazz standards are played on an old hi-fi system. A perfect blend of dark and mysterious; as well as warm and welcoming. Hope you have reservations and hope you can find the place...it's worth the hunt.

Nice Eastern Market location, easy to walk to from the Metro. The door does not have numbers on it so beware. very unique and creative drinks. they also have a very nice appetizer menu, I enjoyed the charcuterie and the salad was very good. A nice beer selection and the atmosphere is cozy and dark. Service was fast and friendly. This is a good place to go for happy hour or a romantic date. I recommend reservations.

The cocktails are well worth the price. Wish I could go more often! You can order on the menu or tell the staff what type of cocktail you want and they’ll come up with something based on your preferences. Yes, the cocktails can take longer than the average, but that’s because they are significantly better than the average. It takes time for perfection.
