An Insult To Our Community
On January 22nd of 2020, shortly after this Harold's opened at 1711 E 87th Street, I took an elderly neighbor there because she wanted to try it. The restaurant was not crowded, my neighbor ordered 2 quarter dark specials and we began to wait. Several people entered the restaurant and formed a line to order. Each ordered chicken wing specials in various quantities. These were not "pick ups" but new orders.
My neighbor and I were shocked as each person who came in after us received their orders before us and left the restaurant. After sitting several more minutes unattended in a now empty restaurant the woman behind the glass who took our order, seeing our distress, politely apologized for the long wait. The disarming sincerity of her apology lightened the mood as both my neighbor and I had become agitated by the wait.
In a now decidedly lighter mood I jokingly.said, "Yeah we couldn't figure out what was taking so long. We thought you had to raise the chicken from eggs to make our meal!" As I was saying this an unidentified man came to the order taking area from the kitchen in the back and, in an apparently bad mood, joined a conversation to which he wasn't a participant by saying, "well if you knew how hard we're working in the kitchen you wouldn't say that".
It is quite frankly none of my concern how hard their kitchen works, as paying customers, we were presented with a mystery.,..how does it take so long to get 2 quarter dark specials when we were the first in a long line of people to order? I was so insulted by this man's flippant attitude and abysmal customer service skills that I asked the man his name thinking that I would report my experience to the owner who would certainly want to correct it.
"My name is Melvin Wright and I AM the owner" was his response. He went on to volunteer that he owns another Harold's at 808 79th Street". Infuriated by the exchange, I assured him that I wouldn't patronize either establishment again. Months pass and true to my word whenever the mood hit me for some Harold's Chicken I would go out of my way to avoid these two Melvin Wright owned locations for Chicken Shacks father away.
Then COVID-19 struck and many restaurants reduced hours or closed outright and the mood hit for Harold's and my best option on Grubhub was the same Melvin Wright owned dump at 1711 E 87th Street where I'd been offended many months before. My heart had softened so I.figured I'd give him another shot. At lunchtime around 12:30 I ordered a 10 piece wing special and a large Chicken Gizzard dinner. Grubhub gave me the estimated arrival time and I waited moments before the expected arrival Grubhub sent me a text saying that my order was delayed. About 15 minutes later they sent a text saying that the restaurant had cancelled my order and that a refund would be made. I was disturbed but figured that they chose not to complete the order because they'd run out of gizzards.
Later that evening around 7:45, still craving Harold's, I used Grubhub to order from the same restaurant at 1711 E 87th Street again but this time I ordered something I was sure they'd have plenty of...I ordered a 30 piece chicken wing special. Estimated delivery was given and just as earlier I received a message that my order would be delayed followed 15 minutes later with a cancellation and refund offer. I can't recommend that anyone patronize the Harold's Chicken Shack at 1711 E 87th Street. It is incompetently run and yet another example, as if we needed more, of how some locally owned business suffer from the tyranny of low expectations. We get what we demand and since we never demand better what we end up with is a place like laughable excuse for a restaurant at 1711 E 87th Street.
