73-Year-Old Chicago Legend Harold’s Chicken Shack Opens In Culver City - Eater LA

"Harold’s Chicken Shack, the historic Chicago fried chicken specialist emblematic of the city’s enduring food culture, is digging deeper into Los Angeles. The restaurant first popped up on LA’s radar when expansion news hit back in 2017, but it wasn’t until late 2019 that the restaurant actually came to life on a crowded Hollywood block. Now there’s a whole new second location at the Westfield Culver City, complete with a full bar, table service, and plenty of televisions." - Farley Elliott

I had been wanting to go this place for the longest and finally did. It wasn’t crowded at all when I arrived and the lady who took my order was very helpful. She recommended the meal I chose. The food was cooked to order so it took some time but it was well worth it. The side servings were really small though. I don’t know if you can get a bigger size but I would suggest doing so. The food was good though. If you’re not going to dine in, I would suggest ordering before you go or you may be waiting a while. Overall, I would tell you to experience it yourself.

Google
I’m very picky with my food. However, I’ve been to this location twice within a week. I wouldn’t do that if I didn’t enjoy the food. Last Sunday, March 2nd, 2025. I believe Ant cooked my food, which was amazing. So, I had to go again lol. Tuesday, March 4th I didn’t grab this man name but a black man with beard, and a piercing made my food which was amazing too. I was hesitant because previous reviews. However, my food and experience was amazing, go check them out!!!! I’ll be back again, I live near LAX. See y’all soon

Google
The food was aaamazing!! But let me first say that they have the CLEANEST restroom I have EVER SEEN IN ANY FAST FOOD RESTAURANT THAT I HAVE SEEN IN MY ENTORE LIFE!!! The manager, Cheyenne keeps it clean and it looks immaculate!!!

Read about this place in google saying it was one of the best chicken in town. The place was nice and clean. Their music was a bit too loud for comfort. The service felt lacking, to be honest. Felt like they weren't happy working there. The food was okay. The chicken tenders were a bit bland and under seasoned. It was crunchy, though. The menu said it included a coleslaw, but they seemed to forget to include it in my order. The pizza bread thing was a little on the salty side. The fries were undercooked and soggy. Didn't feel like I got my money's worth, and I paid a pretty big amount for something so basic.

Came in for a quick lunch break. Ordered the $5 DARK special. Chicken came out HOT and cooked well. Skin had a little less flavor than I like, but it was a great value with the fries and bread slice paired with breast and leg. I’ll be back to try the wings. Shout out to Cheyenne and Mr. D for the great service.

Google
I’ve been following some of the reviews of this establishment and thought I’d check it out for myself. I ordered the 4 wings lunch which consisted of fries and potato salad. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese. First off I tried the potato salad which was really good . However, I will mention that the potato salad came in the same small container as the order of hot sauce and probably was no more than a tablespoon sample. If you want the potato salad then I would recommend getting a side order of it. I was a little disappointed though that I paid $21 for my order and the potato salad came in this small container. The mac n cheese was a little lacking in seasoning but cheesy nevertheless which I like. Overall it was good. The cheesy won over the lack on seasoning. The wings looked really good. They were freshly made and crispy, juicy and hot which I like. However the wings were a little bit too salty for my taste. I even noticed the excess salt sprinkled on my chicken wings. The fries complimented the wings but the saltiness took away from the flavor in my opinion. However, the hot sauce definitely made the wings more flavorful for me. Overall they were good but I would recommend easing off the salt a little bit to allow for the flavor of the chicken to shine! Would I go back, yes but I will be more critical if my chicken is just as salty as it was on during my first visit.

Me and my wife were visiting L.A from Rochester, New York. We heard about Harold's fried Chicken and how awesome they were. So when we first arrived we made it our first priority to order from there. We were both excited to finally try Harold's but we were immediately grossed out because the chicken was extremely unseasoned and discolored. The sauce was also horrible! The sides were so small and skimpy you couldn't get a spoonful out of them. We really felt dissed!!! I will never recommend anybody to come to Harold's they are highly overrated. The food was so nasty it literally made my wife never want to come back to California.

Hot, fresh, affordable, and the service was amazing! Our meal was much bigger than we thought it would be, so we had to take the leftovers to go! If I lived here, I'd love to visit more often! :)

Yelp
The food was amazing!!! Cheyenne was so sweet and professional and Adam made sure that our food was hot and fresh! They also played beautiful music. I will be back for sure!

Yelp
Harold's Chicken in Culver City had me feeling the Windy City vibes right from the start! On Halloween 2024, Cheyenne, the lovely hostess at the register, greeted us with a festive smile that made us feel instantly at home. Her welcoming energy was infectious and perfectly set the mood for an unforgettable evening. Let's talk about the star of the show--the fried chicken. It was nothing short of spectacular, bursting with flavor and cooked to golden perfection. Each bite took me on a nostalgic trip straight to the heart of Chicago. The vibe was on point, with Chicago-based shows playing in the background, adding a unique and hometown feel to the experience. You bet I'll be back for more of this authentic soul food and the genuine hospitality that makes Harold's Chicken a true gem in Culver City! Can't wait for round two!

Yelp
the place has potential, but is still playing catch up to souther cal leaders like Honey's Kettle. the chicken is solid, especially with the hot sauce. it's crispy and seasoned good enough. the fries are the right cut and cooked well, but needs seasoning salt to it. the shrimp has a weird taste to it. can't put my finger on it, but it didn't hit right. the tenders are far from my favorite. they should use thighs versus breasts. the outside of the tenders are tough and over cooked making it hard and tough. the flavor is solid, nothing to crave though. the service is a bright spot. the manager is welcoming and thoughtful. she adds a star to the location.

Yelp
Everything was great the service food everything for future please let customers know up front the cost of those towers

Ali S.

Yelp
Whoever was serving food at 1:30pm on Tuesday March 4th needs to be fired. A lot of food that was on the menu supposedly they ran out. Customers walked in and were immediately turned around. She said "we are closed for the next 30-45 minutes" even though the sign and online says "come in we're open" Customers service was HORRIBLE. To top all of that off after she finished eating she walked to the back licking her fingers and picking food out of her teeth- management please check the cameras it will verify everything. This is horrible for a business and she turned away a lot of customers.

Yelp
Omg! First time trying and it's so GOOD! Great options and the customer service from the manager Cheyenne and Adam was amazing! I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
I was craving fried chicken and Harold's was nearby. I've been to a location in Chicago and was eager to try it in Cali. Service was friendly. I stepped out while my fries were cooking and the cook came out looking for me. Chicken was crispy, seasoned and cooked well. I didn't need the sauce with it. Fries tasted re-heated, and the potato salad was average. For some reason they do t allow greens as a side dish. Restaurant was clean and well mai twined. $12.50 for fries and two sides. A piece of white bread was included in the order. Water was $3 and sodas $3.50. They don't offer the lemonade on the menu.

Yelp
I always love coming to eat here. The atmosphere is great, food is so tasteful and made fresh, and the customer service is great. Cheyenne took my order today, and she was very knowledgeable of the menu, what they had in stock, etc. 10/10 will definitely recommend and I'll be back very soon!

Yelp
My first visit to the Culver City location of Harold's Chicken for a quick lunch. Cheyenne and Charity took very good care of me and my crew. As a LA native, the food is definitely the TRUTH! The catfish nuggets and fried shrimp were EVERYTHING. Y'all need to pull up, for real and support! Bon Appetit!

Yelp
Harold's Chicken is a Chicago staple, happy there's a a couple locations in SoCal. The location is pretty cool on the outside of #foxhillsmall the parking can be challenging but totally worth it. I got the wings & fries with medium sauce along with French Fries & coleslaw. The coleslaw is yummy but the container could be a little larger. The food was made to order totally worth the wait it was nice and hot. The service was cool very attentive love the old school decor. I will definitely recommend and return next time I'm is Culver City.
google avatar

Yelp
Full transparency, I'm not a huge fried chicken eater so I had no expectations either way trying this spot. Being located in the smaller part of the mall, parking is a bit challenging at times - but ample. It's not a large venue but it's a nice space to either order in or take out. I visited on a Saturday evening around 7pm and it was empty. I was happy about it, but that should have honestly been my hint. We ordered, wing plate, chicken tenders plate, bucket of dark, and fried catfish. I only tried the chicken and it was not edible in my opinion. Even the kids ate one piece and was done. We ended up throwing it out. I didn't have the catfish but my sister did and she enjoyed it. I'm unsure if I'd try again, but I'd suggest every one try for themselves at least once.

Yelp
Food and service is always great here from Cheyenne and Chris. Everything cooked to order for freshness

Yelp
The service Cheyenne provided was 5-star. She was very professional, outgoing, and kept a smile on her face. Good was hot and fresh and well seasoned to perfection. The ambiance was too a T. Great music and cleanliness as well.

Yelp
This place was, sadly, not it. I love supporting local small businesses so when I heard this place was popular in Chicago and had opened a restaurant here, I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the food I received was extremely underwhelming. Some of it was inedible, like the "Cat Fish Nuggets" that were basically hard fried pieces of fish skin with almost no fish to be seen. They had a buy-one-get-one free deal on these so I ended up with two containers of inedible junk. The chicken tenders and fries were okay, but nothing special in a city with places like Howlin Rays and others. I wouldn't return for any of the food I received. Too bad, as I was looking forward to trying this spot, but quality control is important.

Vicki R.

Yelp
If I could give them a negative one I would! The chicken is OLD and the service is terrible. Please do not eat here... they are not clean!!!! This fake chicken place gives Chicago's Harold's Chicken a BAD name!!!

Vicki J.

Yelp
The food is Outstanding, I eat there alot Cheyenne is Wonderful. I am a travel nurse from Nashville tennessee.

Karhen D.

Yelp
I had Harold's Chicken and ate the chicken tenders which tasted good. I would say the service was nice, and they offered recommendations of what foods I should try. Since it was my first time trying Harold's. The ambiance was chill. It is a good spot to eat good food and chill with friends.

Landon C.

Yelp
The catfish was fried to perfection. Cheyenne was amazing and took great care of with a friendly smile.
google avatar

Maricel J.

Yelp
Friendly staff, We came here 30mins after it opened and ordered the chicken with catfish. Took awhile for our plate to come out. The chicken and fish were really good. Had Harold's in Chicago, wanted to try it here it Cali.

Yelp
First time at this place. Great chicken! Cheyenne helped us and was very nice and loved her recommendation. Try the chicken strips.

Yelp
I was looking for something for delivery and decided to try this place, I got catfish, chicken and shrimp, all were fresh and delicious. I'll definitely order from them again.

Yelp
I love it when I see something unique on the menu like the gouda mac&cheese bites and pizza puff! The interior was unique as well. I loved the custom flooring and nice deco. The vibe was great and the staff was very kind and friendly. Check out our video review @TripoutwithSadieandRandThom

Yelp
Service was great and everyone was friendly! The whole experience reminded me of Chicago! Will be back food tastes the SAME.
google avatar

Irene Q.

Yelp
Food was delicious and freshly hot! We ordered an 8-pc bucket, side of collard greens, 2-pc Catfish with 3 wings and fries. Whole car smelled so good. We couldn't wait to have some. Service was friendly and helpful. The shop was clean and had ample seating. Will be adding this spot on my fried chicken and catfish list, and try more items on the menu.
google avatar

Silvia S.

Yelp
Good was amazing. Service was amazing. First time trying it and let me tell you, this food was hittin'. The ambiance is chill, welcoming and good attitudes. I recommend Harold's. Had wings, gizzard, lobster nuggets, cat fish nuggets....it was all amazing!!!!
google avatar

Jesika H.

Yelp
If you haven't had the original Harolds in Chicago, you really have nothing to compare this too!!! Chicken was spot on just like the chi town location!! Deeeeeelivious! Everything is made to order so don't expect to eat within 5 mins of ordering! Everyone present waiting for their food knew the deal and everyone acted accordingly. The guy who took my order, super nice!! Place was clean, parking sucks as you know that mall is just overcrowded no matter when you go but I had no problems finding parking! I liked the potato salad!!

Isaiah J.

Yelp
Yes Cheyenne and Charity gave me first class service while I was at the Harold's. Being that I am a Chicago and originally I am very particular about how my food is cooked. They gave me first class service and always did it with a smile. If we haven't been here, you definitely wanna make sure you get here when you're in the culver city area.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Food was okay. Overall I'd rate it 6/10. It wasn't terrible, but I've had much better. I did order the sauce on the side, so perhaps that took away from the intended flavor. Also, the chicken tasted as if the grease needed to be changed. In my opinion, the portions could be better for the price. However, I did love that music was playing and there were TVs to view sports inside.

Jack T.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying, Cheyenne was such a sweet and welcoming person, I got the 3 wing 2 catfish special with fries and a drink for 15 dollars which is awesome with everything else being so crazy expensive. The place was so fresh and clean, and the food fresh and piping hot, just how it should be. I can be super picky so first impressions are important, this was so refreshing and inviting, I will be coming back!
google avatar

Chantal B.

Yelp
First and foremost, Mike IS the most amazing. He does it all and so dedicated. He was cooking. He was being a good host. This was my first time having Harold's and my first time having any meal from Chicago. The chicken was fried perfectly. I ordered it with fries. My sister had the chicken and catfish combo which she enjoyed. We had the coke slaw which was good. It's coke slaw. And then we had the smoked greens and those were immaculate. The mild sauce is supposed to be famous but it was cool. However their barbecue sauce was good. It's at the Westfield mall so there's ample parking.
google avatar

Richard T.

Yelp
Great food and great staff. Clean small gem in the Westfield mall. Chicken was made to order. Not a big plate of grease. Crispy and flavorful. Randomly found this place and I am glad I did. Cheyenne was very helpful and welcoming. Even when placing my order she gave me suggestions and made sure to ask me about the options and sauces. Def worth the wait or call ahead. Probably the best fried chicken I've had in years. I got the 1/4 dark chicken with fries and I was def full afterwards.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
I said I wasn't going to come back here again but I'm giving them ONE last chance to redeem themselves so I walked in and they were playing r&b music and were cleaning up our Me and my fiancé ordered 2 piece wing dinners it comes with 2 sides (fries, Cole slaw, potato salad, and greens) we had to get double fries because they didn't have greens. We had about a 25 minute wait even though there was only one person inside when we walked in so we were handed our food and after doing the customary bag check to make sure we got the right food (we did) and we headed home. Well we ordered 2 piece wing dinners one with sauce and the other with sauce on the side guess what we get home and they BOTH have sauce on them! This is the 2nd time my fiance has ordered chicken with NO sauce on the chicken just on the side,The chicken was so so it tasted like there was barely any seasoning on the chicken . Well this was strike #3 I tried to give them chance after chance but this was the last straw Harold's has burned me for the last time.
google avatar

Meagan E.

Yelp
Just. Wait. Until. Chicago!!!! For the love of God. This is NOT what the real deal Harold's Chicken is like. These chains brought here will ruin it's reputation because Harolds in Chicago is damn delicious. This was a mess. The perch- a midwest lake fish they had to have flash frozen to get out here- was shriveled fry grease. Breaking it in half there was virtually no fish to find and what was there was oiled out and hard, not a single bite of flaky meat. Chicken while better had no flavor despite it supposedly being lemon pepper. Did NOT have the quintessential juiciness and flavor bomb that Harolds is supposed to give. JUST DONT DO THIS. GET TO CHICAGO.
google avatar

Debie L.

Yelp
Great chicken - just like my mamas! Great service -would Highly recommend! Going back next to check out the catfish

Yelp
First time ordering from here. Got delivery thru Postmates after reading some good reviews about it. If you like crispy, moist chicken...then this will not disappoint. I am a fan of southern style fried chicken so I really enjoyed it. We got the boneless chicken wings/fingers and was impressed with the portion size of them. Comes with fries, a slice of white bread and two sauces of your choice either in the side on them. I got the hot sauce and lemon pepper but it literally was Lemon Pepper spice powder not sauce. I would have preferred a sauce. So keep that in mind. It came nice and hot, crispy flakes, juicy not dry. Got 4 pieces and it was enough. The white bread slice was to absorb the oil I think as that is what the tenders were placed on which is a great idea. The fries had seasoning on them so they were tasty. Comes in deli style paper bag and paper dish. Next time I will try the catfish, see how they do. Price was OK for the Westside. I got a deal on Postmates coupon. I may go in person next time too. They are located inside Westfield Mall in Century City. But don't want to pay for parking or the mall crowd so maybe not. Chicago brand apparently. All in all, we loved it and will be back for more! Adding it to my crispy"fried chicken" spot list ;)

Ken C.

Yelp
The food was very tasty..!! Cheyenne was very hospitable and attentive.......I will be back..!!

Yelp
Best service and reminds me of home (Chicago). Mr. D and Cheyenne provided the best service. My family was planning a Chicago party, and without a doubt, they really helped to me out. The chicken is authentic with the house sauce

Morgan L.

Yelp

Yelp
I loved Harold's when I was in Atlanta, so I figured I'd try it in L.A. Staff was cool, but this isn't it. 1.) The menu doesn't have updated prices. You think you're paying one price and it's something else when staff shows you the register. 2.) I got a catfish nugget combo that came with fries. I asked could I substitute the fries for yams ( was told it would be extra, fine), but the yams were charged as a side by itself. Where's the fries? I should have still gotten them since I was charged for a full combo anyway. 3.)Where's the seasoning? My fries, gizzards and catfish nuggets don't have any flavor. I won't be back, I'll just stick to Atlanta. Even if it's expensive at least I know my food will taste good.

Yelp
I haven't given a one star review in a long time. But here goes - See pic. Buy one get one free. I placed an order - 4 Chicken Wings. Buy 1 Get 1 Free. Supposed to come with fries and cole slaw. Even asked me for 2 - yes two sauces and I requested them on the side. See pic. I got one order. No Slaw and no sauces. I call the number and their box isn't set up. I don't know if the Hollywood location is under the same management/owner but I call them and it's the same. Not taking calls. So, I drop $30 on four wings, fries and fried mushrooms. It's not like I can't afford it but when I'm paying for something, I expect it. Anyone should. Everyone should. Harold's will never get my business again. I'll never recommend them and as far as I'm concerned. I can't reach anyone to discuss the matter with - but when I post this review, this is a done deal for me. There's nothing that anyone will say or do to make me ever buy or eat anything from this place again. By the way, I tossed the food. That's how pissed off I am. Just waiting on another order from a place I know will not only honor their specials, but also get my order right.

Marcus B.

Yelp
The Food is amazing the Place is Great I really appreciate the service and respect that was displayed Thank you Cheyenne and Thank you too Harold's Culver City
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
The food was delicious! It's sooo much food, I was not ready. Mike seasoned the food well and it was made fresh to order. Cheyenne was very friendly and attentive. My only complaint would the fries should absolutely come with ketchup and the sauce should've been solely for my tenders. However that is a minor complaint since the food was very tasty. Will definitely return.

Patrick G.

Yelp
Harold Chicken in Culver City straight fire and make sure you get it with the lemon pepper sprinkle on top and make sure you get the hood kool aid, been here 3 times and every time I come Cheyenne always hook me up and she so damn nice to always smiling when I come in
google avatar

Leslie T.

Yelp
I loved the atmosphere! The two beautiful ladies welcome you and make your food fresh on the spot! The food is bomb and fresh, definitely will be back for my lunch breaks.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
I was in the mood for something authentic, so my girlfriend and I decided to check this place out--and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. First off, the okra was so crunchy, I thought my teeth were getting a workout. The chicken tenders? Crispier than my morning attitude. And that fish--flavorful enough to make me question my loyalty to sushi. The only downside is the wait, but hey, you know it's fresh when they're still out back convincing the fish to jump in the fryer. The sides were small, but let's face it, you don't need all that extra carbs. Love the crew and the vibe. Give 'em a try!

Nikki I.

Yelp
As a business owner we have to adjust on a dime. I called the Harold's in Culver City and Cheyenne was great. She helped me get my order in and completed in less than 24 hours. Thank you so much for supporting.

Lara S.

Yelp
Service and amazing portions. The ladies will take care of you! Juicy chicken and great fries.
