"Open for: Lunch, dinner Price range: $$ Harp Barbecue is a relative newcomer to the local barbecue scene, but that hasn’t kept founder Tyler Harp from topping local best-of lists and earning national praise for his thick-sliced, fatty brisket and creative homemade sausages. A move to a new location at the end of 2024 added plenty of seating for dine-in customers.  Know before you go: Fans of Texas-style brisket won’t find any better than the brisket at Harp, since Kansas City tends toward lean, thin-sliced brisket." - Liz Cook

I'd heard about Harp BBQ while down in Texas. I'd heard about a guy from KC who road tripped around the top TX BBQ places and then opened shop in KC, so I was intrigued from the start. The restaurant was originally in Raytown, MO, but recently moved to Overland Park, KS. The staff were warm and friendly, but the service relatively slow. That being said, Tyler (owner and pit master) came by every table to check in on the guests and discuss the food which was fantastic to see a caring, hands on owner. The food was very good, but my caveat is that it's TX BBQ in KC. As a Texan, I thought the bark on his brisket was perfect and his sausage was fantastic. The ribs were surprising as I anticipated KC style ribs (sweet and saucy), but got pepper and a little sweet glaze (which matches TX). I enjoyed it for that style, but had to reset my expectation from what I came with. The sides of cheesy corn, potato salad, and Mac and cheese were top notch, but I would veer away from the beans next time. They were a little too ketchup-y for my taste. In general, I'd go again and would potentially be a regular if I lived closer!

A top 2 BBQ spot in Kansas City (them and Chef J's). Had the pastrami on Rye special. Perfect flavor and smoke. The house made mustard sauce was fantastic. Added some of the house made bbq sauce also. The twice baked potato side was a standout as well. Very thoughtful. You can smell the smoke favors about half a block away, and can see the setup on the side, so you know they do it right. Tyler Harp BBQ is a must stop place for bbq in KC.

There is no argument that if you put the BBQ regions against each other, Kansas City and Austin (Texas) are at the pinnacle. Who is best is also not a question :) Harp is the best Texas style BBQ outside of Texas. And I would argue that they could go toe to toe with most of the best places within Texas. The brisket and ribs are top notch. Even the pork is no joke. The sides such as the potato salad and the corn are above-average. I am not a fan of their pinto beans but thats just personal preference. If you cannot get to Texas and want to compare Texas BBq to KC Bbq, this is the spot to go to.

Peppery beans. Salty Greens. Cheesy corn was good. Driest brisket ive eaten in a long time. Average BBQ at best. Very little food for the price. Had to go to Sonic as I was still hungry after spending $30. Like the old commercial "wheres the beef"? I'm sure the owner will read this and post his "top restuarants of Kansas City" reply. Tells me all i need to know.

Stopped here while in town on a conference for work due to so many local suggestions. Wow, we were not disappointed! The service was amazing and super friendly and took them up on a couple specials they mentioned. Ribs were by far the best I’ve had, from here to 10 places in Austin and Houston I’ve tried. Unreal. Best I’ve had in KC as well. The brisket was juicy and the sides and sauces were fantastic. If you choose one BBQ joint in Kansas City area, try here first. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Terry Black’s in Austin and Harps In KC. The best.

Amazing! Super kind staff all around. We were checked on multiple times while dining. Now the food, phenomenal! We had the brisket, ribs, turkey, sampled the pork belly, beans, mac & cheese, sweet potato mash, and cheesy corn. Holy crap. The meats; ALL had great flavor and tender, bark on the brisket 👌. My son got a brisket sandwich and that was loaded with meat! The sides; I can't see where they could improve, the sweet potato mash and cheesy corn were my favorites but dang they were all excellent, the flavor on the beans was delicious (wish I could figure out the spices). You can tell they cook with love. We're not local to KC but we will be back.

We opted for the 3-meat combo to go, and it turned out to be more than enough for two people. The brisket and burnt ends were exceptional, boasting a perfect bark and packed with flavor in every bite. The pulled pork was solid. The beans had a delightful kick of spice—balanced and not overly sweet. The slaw had a light acidity that provided a crisp, refreshing contrast. I'll be going back to check the consistency of that brisket because I had a double take on the flavor. It was that good. I'm glad these guys moved into the neighborhood!

Excellent BBQ! I’m so glad they moved to Olathe. The burnt ends and brisket are ridiculously good. I wish they had fries, but the collard greens, cheesy corn, and twice baked potato salad more than make up for it!
