When you walk into Harpers the first thing you see is the large bar that fills the center of the restaurant. It is a large place, there are numerous tables scattered about - I've never had to wait to be seated. There are private rooms that can be reserved for parties and a large patio that circles around half the building. Outdoor heat lamps are a nice touch for cool evenings. Bands often play and there is a small dance floor. Pool tables and high-top bar tables fill the back of the bar.
HOWEVER... while Harper's does offer a nice space, the service I've experienced over the years has made my stomach turn every time a friend suggests going back. I will offer numerous alternatives, anything to avoid having to go back to Harpers.
In short, I had numerous bad experiences with the servers in this establishment but one stands out... on a busy Saturday night my friend and I stood at the bar and ordered two drinks. As the bartender prepared the drinks we paid and tipped (the standard amount) and she slid the drinks across the counter to us. As my friend reached for the drinks she bumped one of them and it spilled all across the counter right in front of the bartender. "Ooops, I'm sooo sorry!" my friend said. The bartender prepared another drink and then CHARGED us again. Huh?!? Noticing the surprised look on our faces, as it had been a completely accidental spill right in front or her, the bartender sneered, "well, if you'd tossed down an extra tip after you spilled that drink then I wouldn't have charged you".
As a hospitality industry veteran, I was aghast by her self-serving, not business-serving or customer-serving, attitude. I mean, this sort of behavior isn't just poor customer service - it's horrible for the business. It's completely short-sighted and selfish when employees are only looking to make an extra buck for themselves, not do what's right for the establishment as a whole. I followed up with management, assuming they would be as appalled as I was by this attitude displayed by the bartender.
Needless to say, I received absolutely no response from management. Having already had previous poor encounters with servers at Harper's, this was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Now, when I'm out with a group in East Lansing I certainly steer us clear of Harpers.
BOTTOM LINE: Mediocre food and extremely poor management and service; if a drink special is what you're looking for, there are much better spots within walking distance.
