Yelp
A wonderful place to go for breakfast in Key West. The kindest, most welcoming restaurant to eat on the island. With excellent food, and the best staff.
As a half-crazy person (or, to be more charitable, neurodivergent, plus non-drinking), I don't always feel entirely comfortable in the surreal and inundating fins-up, partying, post-partying, island time sweltering iguanascape of Key West. Especially when having a bad day, or if something has gone wrong. But, the kind, thoughtful, attentive hosts and servers at Harpoon Harry's made me feel welcome, calm, and almost at home.
On my first visit, last week, I was dehydrated, poorly rested, and customarily depressed. Even though I showed up glum, shaky and unsure, the two fantastic people at the entrance, at the register, were so nice to me. And to everyone. Even to a man who appeared to be having a much worse day than me, and was being more than a bit abrasive. Their kindness eased whatever troubles were affecting both the abrasive man and also my own depressed and dehydrated self (he left in good spirits, and even superfluously apologized to me). I can't say enough good things about the terrific people at the counter. And everyone else I encountered, the servers, the owner, were also kind.
But, hey, what if you're thinking, "I don't give a hoot about how nice these people are -- how's the food, dude?" Good news! The food is excellent. The eggs benedict, always the greatest challenge for restaurants serving breakfast, was superb. The hollandaise tasted like actual hollandaise -- some other, otherwise fine, restaurants will cut some serious corners on the hollandaise (Two Friends Patio, to cruelly single out an egregious example). And adding lobster to the benedict makes a great choice, too. And maybe a tiny mini-pinch of salt in the hollandaise. The eggs and omelets are also great. The toast options include Cuban bread -- which is a great local wrinkle. There are excellent desserts, as well (I had a fine blueberry muffin). Even the grits are very good. Careful attention is given to every element of the food (and all of the staff appears to be equally attentive to keeping the restaurant constantly clean, as well).
The service is excellent, attentive, and very efficient. The food arrives amazingly fast, as well (which is an extra plus if your mental eccentricities include great difficulty waiting for things). The air conditioning is winning its battle against Key West heat, as well. Even the music is good (the playlist on my first visit seemed to be themed Emmylou Harris adjacent); it's nice to not have to wear ear buds to block out the normally inescapable 90s/00s rock.
I feel bad that, despite the many times I've been to Key West, I'd somehow never been to Harpoon Harry's. I'm looking forward to visiting again, hopefully not too many years from now, and hopefully, they'll still be there, and unchanged. Thank you for being nice to me!
