10 Best Breakfasts in Key West For a Fresh Start to the Day | Condé Nast Traveler

"Though it’s hard to compete with the sights, sounds, and smells of Key West’s Historic Seaport area, Harpoon Harry’s has been making it happen for more than 20 years. Located one block from the waterfront, the building has an exterior painted an attention-grabbing pink. Perhaps even more impressive? In one of the city’s buzziest tourist areas, this an honest-to-goodness diner—counter-seating, blue-plate specials, and all—that prides itself on stick-to-your-ribs comfort food at reasonable prices." - Jennifer M. Google
We were there for breakfast and the coffee is amazing. The ambience is the best matches the vibe of Key West Fun. Lots of paint and artwork on the wall and decoratives . You can sit indoor or outdoor breakfast. The omelette had big chunks of vegetables. It's not nicely, chopped and it was good, but we expected a little better in terms of the veggies in the omelette. The grit was very bland. Our server was very Polite and attentive.

Google
Omg. Everything was amazing. Such a welcoming staff. Excellent food. The in house bloody Mary (Harry bloody) mmm mmm good. Lobster eggs Benedict 😋. If you don't eat breakfast here at least once you missed out on something great

Google
It was super nice to find something more local for a special breakfast other than Denny's or other chains. Judy was great, she made us feel at home. Also, the welcoming of the people when we entered was awesome. And of course, the food was incredible and the place super fun! It's definitely our new place at Key West

Google
Every detail of this place was heaven on earth!! From the quirky decor, the LITERAL KEY LIME PIE piece IN THE FRENCH TOAST, to the absolute doll of a waitress!! 12/10!!! Was a beautiful end to our honeymoon trip!!

David

Google
Very cool place, exactly what you think a dinner in key west would be. The art work on the walls was a little much, be warned if you have kids... but, food and service were excellent. Make sure you have CASH!!!

Google
Heard about Harpoon Harry’s from our hotel staff and it didn’t disappoint! Breakfast was good with reasonable pricing; staff was attentive; and vibe was pretty cool. Conveniently close to Duval St and all the things to do in the area.

Troy B.

Google
Ok. I mean looks consistent. Average level food, nothing really hot. Typical of breakfast places who bulk cook sides like sausage and potatoes, etc. Great diner vibe. Funky. Prompt attentive service. Just ok food, nothing bad. Better than average.

Google
Stopped in for breakfast with the grandkids and it was a hit for them! They had the pancakes and French toast and absolutely loved every bite. I ordered the Western omelette… it was good, but honestly a little bland for my taste. Grandkids had pancakes & french toast that was a hit… What made the visit stand out was the fast service and friendly, and on point, even though the place was packed. The staff kept things moving with a smile, which made the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Love atmosphere and Ron makes sure everyone is taken care of. The food was great. I ordered the grits with my meal, but was skeptical... The grits were perfect! Ron let us take a pic with him on our way out. Definitely a place to visit while in Key West! The mimosas were bomb.. Like I made them at home with a splash of juice!

Yelp
A wonderful place to go for breakfast in Key West. The kindest, most welcoming restaurant to eat on the island. With excellent food, and the best staff. As a half-crazy person (or, to be more charitable, neurodivergent, plus non-drinking), I don't always feel entirely comfortable in the surreal and inundating fins-up, partying, post-partying, island time sweltering iguanascape of Key West. Especially when having a bad day, or if something has gone wrong. But, the kind, thoughtful, attentive hosts and servers at Harpoon Harry's made me feel welcome, calm, and almost at home. On my first visit, last week, I was dehydrated, poorly rested, and customarily depressed. Even though I showed up glum, shaky and unsure, the two fantastic people at the entrance, at the register, were so nice to me. And to everyone. Even to a man who appeared to be having a much worse day than me, and was being more than a bit abrasive. Their kindness eased whatever troubles were affecting both the abrasive man and also my own depressed and dehydrated self (he left in good spirits, and even superfluously apologized to me). I can't say enough good things about the terrific people at the counter. And everyone else I encountered, the servers, the owner, were also kind. But, hey, what if you're thinking, "I don't give a hoot about how nice these people are -- how's the food, dude?" Good news! The food is excellent. The eggs benedict, always the greatest challenge for restaurants serving breakfast, was superb. The hollandaise tasted like actual hollandaise -- some other, otherwise fine, restaurants will cut some serious corners on the hollandaise (Two Friends Patio, to cruelly single out an egregious example). And adding lobster to the benedict makes a great choice, too. And maybe a tiny mini-pinch of salt in the hollandaise. The eggs and omelets are also great. The toast options include Cuban bread -- which is a great local wrinkle. There are excellent desserts, as well (I had a fine blueberry muffin). Even the grits are very good. Careful attention is given to every element of the food (and all of the staff appears to be equally attentive to keeping the restaurant constantly clean, as well). The service is excellent, attentive, and very efficient. The food arrives amazingly fast, as well (which is an extra plus if your mental eccentricities include great difficulty waiting for things). The air conditioning is winning its battle against Key West heat, as well. Even the music is good (the playlist on my first visit seemed to be themed Emmylou Harris adjacent); it's nice to not have to wear ear buds to block out the normally inescapable 90s/00s rock. I feel bad that, despite the many times I've been to Key West, I'd somehow never been to Harpoon Harry's. I'm looking forward to visiting again, hopefully not too many years from now, and hopefully, they'll still be there, and unchanged. Thank you for being nice to me!

Kirk T.

Yelp
My two cents. Good food, generous portions, reasonable prices, great service. Loved the music. Will be back.
google avatar

Nancy W.

Yelp
Cute place. Great food. Has Air conditioning! I had the fish tacos. Red snapper with Feta. Yum. Friendly staff. Near water and shopping.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast in Key West. Very cute with lots of atmosphere offering full menu of selection. Across the street from many boat excursions and the famous Key West mural it is easy to find. Definitely need to visit and go for breakfast. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is they only take cash. They do not accept any card debit or credit. BTW...it is so good my family returned the next morning

Mike D.

Yelp
Just a perfect place to enjoy an awesome breakfast, along with a great morning cocktail and fun music. The service is surprisingly fast for as crowded as the place can get. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a great brunch. Tried to go for dinner as well, but we couldn't make it fit our timetable. Next time!

Yelp
Fun & funny waiter and so personable! My dad & his friends are regulars here so we had to try it My dad had ribs which were falling off the bones, so good! My son & I kept stealing his fries. Son got a burger. I got chili with everything, so cheese & onions with a Mimosa Cute interior with some old art deco, etc vibes.
google avatar

Felix P.

Yelp
It's like this...Key West is a breakfast destination...like New Orleans!! There are so many excellent breakfast places in Key West, and we have actually been to all of them. So maybe you can appreciate when I say, Harpoon Harry's is the best!! Every item we've tried has been cooked to perfection! But enough about the food... The greatest waitress on the Island is here! If Debbie were working at McDonald's (God forbid), we would eat at McDonald's every day!! Trust me!
google avatar

Lulu P.

Yelp
Recommend: Spinach, tomato, feta omelette ! Plate came out hot ! Don't recommend: Bloody Mary Good service ! Cash only ! Fun cute ambience !!
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
The restaurant is decorated really nicely. Gives the old school diner vibe. Food wasn't too expensive but it is cash only!! Our server was nice but did not check up on us much. The food was underwhelming. Kinda bland, little to no seasoning. A good stop if you need a quick, cheap bite to eat.
google avatar

Curtis M.

Yelp
I love this place, diner type of restaurant, quick service. Food was good and probably the most reasonable priced on the island.
google avatar

Maura P.

Yelp
The service is so amazing. Everyone of the servers are willing to check on your table. It does not matter if your meal was served cold, they truly notice something might be wrong. The ambiance, it is Key West! On the slips with all the boats.
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
Great food, excellent service, cash-only, but an ATM right in the restaurant !! I had breakfast here on my birthday last year, and it was nice. I recommend it all of the time to our guests, as the hotel I work for is right up the street (NYAH).
google avatar

Harry A.

Yelp
what a great experience at Harpoons Harry's. The ambience of this place was top notch. Everyone working was so polite. The colors were bright. I loved to see my every where, from the walls to uniforms Harry was everywhere! I totally loved it. Super cute spot to come grab breakfasts or lunch. I ordered the classic Harry , added cheese to my grits and kaboom breakfast was served proper. The whole staff was friendly and very attentive. Highly recommend and I will be returning next time I'm down in Miami.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Great food and service. The key lime French toast was amazing and a must try for breakfast. I highly recommend this restaurant
google avatar

Josh T.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast and was greeted by a supper friendly host who sat us right away. We got a table outside on the sidewalk as we always prefer outdoor dining when available. The place was very busy especially after we arrived and everything flowed smooth. Food came out fast and hot, coffee refills were constantly offered and we didn't have to wait for the check.
google avatar

Dylan H.

Yelp
Excellent hole in the wall local spot for breakfast. Very friendly staff and the food was perfect. This location is on my rotation of breakfast stops while in key west. Bring cash
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
First breakfast in Key West and last breakfast in Key West. Good value. Good portions. Great service. Eggs over med with bacon and toast for me and omelette with potatoes for husband first breakfast. Florentine eggs Benedict with potatoes for me and French toast with bacon for husband for last breakfast. All the food was great. Atmosphere is pure Key West.

Yelp
"Throwback" is the word that comes to mind when walking into Harpoon Harry's. This has the eclectic look of a 50's diner with touches of rock 'n roll through the ages. Where else can you see a classic display of 8-track tapes on the wall? Even the hostess had a fabulous beehive 'do. We stopped for breakfast and enjoyed looking at the displays on the walls while we waited for our food. Unfortunately the food wasn't as great as we had anticipated. I had eggs, home fries, and rye toast. Everything tasted fairly bland. I had to toss on salt & pepper to add some flavor. My wife ordered the key lime pie stuffed french toast topped with fresh fruit. What a great combo! The warm key lime pie was delicious, but the french toast was underwhelming. Two thin slices of toast in a non-descript batter. The meal had such potential but didn't live up to expectations. The server was pleasant and seemed to enjoy her job. We may try Harpoon Harry's again for lunch, but mainly just to enjoy the fun wall displays.
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Great spot for breakfast. I ordered the special shrimp and grits which was delicious. The grits had bacon and cheese mixed in! Yum. The eggs were perfectly poached on the eggs Benedict. Service was quick and the waitstaff is fun and friendly.
google avatar

Britany M.

Yelp
Cute place, loved the windows/doors being open. Mimosa was good, Key Lime French Toast was good. Crab cake Benedict was good, egg was a little runny for my liking but still good. No straws offered and I didn't see any at anyone else's table.

Marcus F.

Yelp
Finally found a restaurant that has real breakfasts. No creative flavorless mash-ups, just real food with flavor. We're here 3 days and found HH on day 2, and here we are on day 3.
google avatar

DeAnna R.

Yelp
Quick, delicious, and funky. We were sat quickly and waited on promptly. The restaurant is quirky and full of fun stuff to look at. We got biscuits and sausage gravy and the 222 (two pancakes, two eggs, two bacon strips). It was all SCRUMPTIOUS! We were done within 30 minutes of showing up. Heads up, cash only!
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
We ate there 3 times in 8 days. Figured out where and why the locals eat here. This is great food at a good price. Weekends are busier than most place because the food is quality at reasonable prices. Head's up- cash only
google avatar

Stephen L.

Yelp
Had a great breakfast. Loved the decor and the Lobster eggs benedict was very good too. Service was the best

Yelp
Harpoon Harry's is a near-legendary Key West breakfast stop. It seems its been around forever, and is a favorite stop-by for Key Wester and some tourists alike. As it is so popular you may have to wait to be seated. My wait wasn't long and I got a nice outdoor sidewalk, Probably, thanks in part to the fact that my partner knew the owner. The menu of Harpoon Harry's isn't all that impressive. It's pretty much just run of the mill dinner type, but with a few local additions like Key Lime Pie French Toast, Cuban Egg Sandwich, Sea Food Omelet, and Lobster Po'Boy. For my breakfast, I went for the seafood omelet with, according to the menu, lobster and lump crab with hollandaise sauce, However, I didn't find any lump crab in it and what lobster there may have been, it was so skimpy and minuscule as to hardly be noticeable. Otherwise, it was an OK omelet. Partner had an omelet sandwich with hash browns which he said was very good, The fun factor, however, is good. Everyone seems so Key West laid back and friendly,

Yelp
Great food! Great price! Super friendly service!! There was a little wait but the line moved pretty fast. The host was so nice, he had such a positive energy. The server was super friendly and courteous also, and fast to get our drinks, orders. The food was sooo delicious. We both got the Harry's Special Breakfast and the home fries are soooooo good. I would totally order an additional side of it.

Amy M.

Yelp
Always a great experience. Food is yummy, every item on par. My favorite is biscuits and gravy with home fries and a grill heated banana nut muffin. Staff are friendly and service is great. See you next time!
google avatar

Bobby D.

Yelp
I love this place. I went there when I was in Key West before and I made a point to find it for breakfast on my last visit. The food is great, comes out quickly and the atmosphere is just perfect. Prices are in line And there is public parking across the street.

Tanya O.

Yelp
Quaint establishment. Service was good. Food was good. I can't think of anything spectacular but nothing bad. Nice place to relax and enjoy your meal.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Still cash only but prices have gone up and the portions have gone down Long gone are the affordable blue plate specials- Now they are $$$$$ Still a great breakfast but- Accept card if you are going to charge so much for so little
google avatar

Steve Z.

Yelp
This place is fantastic for breakfast. We will be back, as this is a staple in KW. It's a great pick me up if you had a bit of a long night. I had Harry's Special which is eggs, ham, sausage and bacon. My wife had the country po-boy (chicken fried steak and eggs with gravy). Both were awesome and I cleaned my plate.

Roxanne S.

Yelp
Small corner diner but big taste! Came here for a late lunch and we just got off the plane. Delicious! My hubby had the whole red snapper, I had fish (snapper) tacos and we also had a Cuban sandwich and pasta. Everything was really good! We will be here a week and I do expect to be back!
google avatar

Suzanne H.

Yelp
Absolutely loved Harpoon Harry's. Note! Cash only! I enjoyed going there often for breakfast. But also had lunch there. Great Cuban Sandwich! Staff Rock. I was in Key West all of August 2022. It's a must visit for good food in Key West.
google avatar

Don R.

Yelp
This is a must breakfast spot to dine at when you're in Key West. The employees from the host to the servers are very nice and accommodating. The decor is really cool with tons of music collectibles scattered throughout the restaurant. But the food is what makes this a great experience. For libations we had the Mimosa and Bloody Harry (spicy Bloody Mary with just the right amount of kick). For breakfast we had the pork chops and eggs and the Lobster Benedict. The pork chops were cooked to perfection and very juicy. Eggs were prepared as ordered and the fried potatoes were crisp and tasty. Lobster Benedict!! Who knew? It is simply amazing and probably enough for 2 people to share since their portions are huge!!! Seriously, we skipped lunch because we were so full from breakfast. Absolutely loved our experience and will definitely go back, but probably share a meal next visit!
google avatar

Cathy W.

Yelp
If you are looking for a fun stop and a filling, no frills breakfast, Harpoon Harry's is where you need to land. TAKE CASH because they don't TAKE CARDS. Country Po' Boy was pleasing for my manly man. Two eggs with grits was perfect for me after I passed on the Key Lime French Toast (sounded wonderful but too rich for me that day!) Check out the hurricane pics outside the restrooms. Harpoon Harry's carries on, come hell or high water! Food was great. Ditto for service and history and decor! Love me an experienced old school waitress who knows what you need before you do!

Stephen L.

Yelp
Love this place! Our waitress was entertaining, sweet as could be and funny. Food was great, and I love all the nostalgia that was hanging on the walls.

Joseph S.

Yelp
In contrast to what others have posted they were upset they sat under a TV with Fox News on. I'm only giving 4 stars because I sat under the Tv with ESPN. At least no Fake News by CNN. For the food and service I am giving them 6 stars. I had a seafood omelette and wife enjoyed her chesse omelette
google avatar

Timothy S.

Yelp
This is somewhat of a small diner feeling for me at least! This place had amazing food with fast service as well as amazing food! The decor inside was perfect for the overall feel of the place with Elvis, Ringo Starr, Beatles, Jimmy Buffett, and many other artists whom have memorabilia displayed here!!

Thomas C.

Yelp
Food as ok but they did not bring out what was ordered. Seated those who arrived after us before us, you need to watch them. Waitress could not have been nicer or more hospitable. They play FOX news which is pretty unbelievable for Jey West. They are oblivious. Ned any more be said. Avoid this place if you have a conscience.

Lynn F.

Yelp
Loved this little place! The decor is fun, eclectic, and vintage in a very good way. Everywhere you look you find something interesting. The diner is colorfully decorated. Great food and even better service from our waiter Randy! We had the Wednesday night special...a full turkey dinner...white and dark meat covered with gravy, homemade mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato mash, and cranberry relish. Every bite was delicious! I felt like I was eating Thanksgiving dinner in Key West but the home cooked food just hit the spot after all the junk we had eaten all week. I want to try their breakfast soon. I hope sooner than later! I honestly do not know how anyone would not like this diner! We were told a lot of local residents frequent Harry's--always a good sign of good food!

Kat D.

Yelp
We waited 45 minutes for our food this morning after the kitchen lost our ticket. Our server took my soft drink to refill it and I had to ask for it back five minutes later. She was nice and apologetic, but I don't think it should have taken half an hour for someone to realize our food wasn't coming, as others got their food in under ten minutes. It's also cash only, which I didn't see on their Yelp listing or posted anywhere when we came in, but that's on us I guess for not noticing. Good thing we had cash. Food wasn't all that great...my husband couldn't eat the second half of his crab cake benny. My kids liked the key lime French toast and the Cuban breakfast sandwich.
google avatar

Terrence C.

Yelp
Joe is the greatest waiter that has ever lived. The atmosphere is so laid back and chill. They are cash only. No cards whatsoever. But I respect it and I still had a great time. The ambiance is next level. The food is perfect for Key West. I am so happy. This was my first place to visit, sit and eat while in Key West. Awesome.

Thomas C.

Yelp
After waiting 40 minutes for a table. We were seated at the counter, with a huge TV above us, tuned into FOX NEWS ! What a way to totally ruin our breakfast ! I made a comment to the host, he told me not to look at the TV, and focus on something else ,,,,, seriously, so rude. It was so shocking, for Key West. Unless that's the vibe you're looking for, I would most certainly move on to the numerous other breakfast options.
google avatar

Dana W.

Yelp
Great service, good food and the prices are very reasonable, especially for Key West!

Caroll S.

Yelp
The food at Harpoon Harry's was delicious -- fresh and flavorful. Unfortunately, our server Judi was a bit rude, which took away from the experience. Still worth a visit for the food alone.

John R.

Yelp
life changing food and the music was baller. 10/10. Server was friendly and we got our food super quickly
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
I live about four blocks away so this is a standby. Reliable breakfast, although friends say that the corned beef hash is better at Pepe's. Prices are higher than last year, it seems. $18 for fried chicken blue plate special on Sundays -- ouch! Service by the ... ahem ... "seasoned" waitresses is fast and efficient, despite a paucity of smiles. The owner (male) does his best to make up for it with his enthusiastic greetings. HH's crowd tends toward more locals than at Pepe's, where the active bar scene enjoyed by visitors to KW livens up the place. Despite this, Harpoon Harry's manages to be deafening.

Jeff P.

Yelp
Always one of our stops for breakfast. Good food and an even better staff. Don't miss Harpoon Harry's when in Key West
