Retracing Harriet Tubman’s Steps on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

"This volunteer-run educational center in Cambridge has honored her legacy for some 30 years. What’s new is behind the museum building: A new mural of Tubman, with her eyes calling you and her hand outstretched, went viral when it was painted by local artist Michael Rosato in May."

You don't want to miss this gem! I visited as part of a tour group and our female tour guide was amazing (and stunningly gorgeous)! Please forgive me - I don't recall her name and I'm so bummed about it. She was incredibly passionate about Harriet Tubman and knew a bazillion facts. Her storytelling ability was extremely captivating and she sang songs that felt like stepping back in time. This lovely volunteer has deeply immersed herself into the experience and has walked the entire Underground Railroad from here to Canada and down through Texas to Mexico. This just blew me away! The museum is lovely and there's plenty to see. There's a small gift shop area and a large one-person bathroom that's handicapped accessible. The museum is right downtown Cambridge and there are multiple free public parking locations in walking distance. There's a gorgeous mural on the side wall of Harriet Tubman that you don't want to miss. If you're looking for history- this museum and it's volunteers are the real deal. I highly recommend visiting!

This is a fascinating historic museum in Maritime Cambridge's downtown district. They are closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday -- although the attendant opened the door when we knocked and let us in anyway. The museum is in a converted row house. It is jam-packed full of interesting artifacts, historical signs, and artwork. The museum covers very thoroughly the life of Harriet Tubman, the legendary conductor on the underground railroad. It is a museum essentially about slavery in America. Much of the material is difficult to face, but it is important to understand. It is very well done and definitely worth a visit -- with your family or solo.

Wonderful experience, it felt like I was sitting at the foot of my elder as he shared the life and legacy of our beloved ancestor. Harriet T.

Great museum with dedicated volunteers. The collection of books and art on the life and times of Tubman are excellent! The murals inside and out are amazing. Get a lecture or a musical tour of the Underground Railroad.

Google
[NOTE: Some reviews of this place are for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, which is much better] You'll find the basic info about Harriet Tubman and the UGRR, some art, and random artifacts. There is a video you can watch and a pretty cool back room where (I assume) events and such occur. It felt like more could be done with this space.

Check the calendar before you go! We traveled over 2 1/2 hours to visit the site and didn’t realize that the Governor of Maryland was visiting that day as well. It was a madhouse in the museum and it was very difficult to navigate with my walker. The one thing we were not able to do because of the crowds was see the orientation video which I really would liked to have seen. The museum itself is well organized. I was hoping to learn more, it only took an hour to read everything and we take our time to read whatever is interpreted in museums. The gift shop was small and had limited merchandise. I bought a book because I heard someone talking about it and it sounded interesting. For those, like myself with mobility issues, they had benches spaced out throughout the museum. My husband was able to drop me off at the door as well. The handicap parking was not in view of the door so it was not very close. The bathroom was easy to navigate with my walker.

It’s a small quaint museum with tons of information. Sit and watch some videos. Ask questions. The murals in the back room are of the Bucktown store where Harriet was injured in the head, which affected the rest of her life. There are entertaining lectures with songs by the director and her husband. She also provides walking tours with loads of history and song. They also host a monthly jazz concert.

Yelp
As much as it pains me to post a negative review (something I hardly ever do), I feel it would be disingenuous to do anything else. Not a good experience today at all. We were vacationing in Ocean City and needed a break from the beach and traditional touristy activities. As great admirers of Harriet Tubman, my wife and I decided to visit the museum and were particularly excited to have a guided walking tour. I booked our tour online and we drove an hour and a half to Cambridge. As we pulled into the parking lot, the tour guide called and left a message saying she wasn't available. Apparently she had told the museum not to schedule tours for today, but their system had done so anyway. We went into the museum, trying to make the best of a frustrating situation. It was very limited and amateurish. That is not being critical, as it appears to be seriously underfunded and operated by volunteers. Just stating what we saw for others to be aware. it was basically a collection of printed materials with little, if any, original items unique to Harriet Tubman's lifetime. The museum director never greeted us. There were four or five people sitting and watching a PBS documentary. A couple of other groups walked in, looked around and then left. None of them were greeted either. Finally, I went up to the register and he asked if he could help me. I explained what had happened, and he chuckled, saying "Yeah, this happens sometimes. I guess the person who set up the system needs to fix that." He gave me $40 out of the cash register and that was it. No apologies or anything. After we left the museum, I texted the tour guide that he'd refunded our money only to find out that she had also done so online. We had to go back to the museum to give the $40 back. Total waste of a day of vacation. Again, I hate to be the grumpy guy leaving a bad review, but hopefully this will be helpful to someone somehow.

Yelp
First off I must say thank you to the community and small group of individuals that put their heart, time and soul into operating and developing this museum! This museum is special and it feels like you are literally stepping back into time. There is so much information and artifacts about the life of Harriet Tubman and her family, the rich history of Cambridge and the pertaining era, and visual images to bring all of this historic information to light. There is so much more to the life of Harriet Tubman than the underground railroad, she literally put her life on the line to save others. She was a warrior and a savior! This museum also highlights upon other notable people who followed in Harriet's footsteps, or who were inspired by her path and noble work. Being a young Black American male and being able to see such rich accomplishments that have paved the way for other Black Americans today in living color was empowering. I recommend that EVERYONE visit this historic gem! It will change your life! I made sure to give a donation after I was finished viewing. It takes about 30-45 minutes to view everything depending on your intake method. I do love that the museum is just the right size, as it allows visitors to take everything in. After visiting, take the time to checkout and enjoy the beautiful historic downtown Cambridge!

Yelp
A heartfelt, homey museum that put together a succinct and interesting display dedicated to a heroine, Harriet Tubman. I'll be honest - I didn't know that much about her, just whatever the basics they throw at you during high school history lessons (and high school was a very long time ago). I was thrilled to find out her amazing back ground and her important role in the black history. The gentleman who manned the museum that day was very helpful.

Yelp
Well I was actually looking for the education center which is further near the nature reserve out but my GPS bought me here........ so glad that it did. It's a small museum in downtown Cambridge. There are some lovely wall murals near the building as well as some quaint shops in the block. Pms ty if street parking g as well. The folks working were so pleasant and I learned that there is a Underground Railroad walk held annually. I was able to speak to Ms. Harris who was a lovely lady. Specifically, I was i town for a UGRR bike ride. I love this area it has a old town charm that embraces its history even if it's uncomfortable.

Yelp
Very nice small museum loaded with history about Harriet Tubman. I didn't know she was born & raised on the Eastern Shore & they have a whole Byway which stretches 125 miles long! You are able to travel the trail of the Underground Railroad & visit some sites where Harriet Tubman made history. Which I thought was fantastic. The workers in the museum are very nice & give plenty of information. Love it I will be returning!

Yelp
I came all the way from Nebraska just to see this. Unfortunately it was close when I got there. The time on the internet didn't match the time outside Of the building. Which is the only downfall. I will be making a trip up again just to see the inside.

Yelp
This is a Great historical museum. The staff super friendly and helpful. The Harriet Tubman learning center is different from the Harriet Tubman visitor center.

Yelp
I am only giving this place three stars because I thought it was the actual museum. So needless to say I was a bit disappointed. However, there is quite of bit of information and art located at the location. I would say if you want to do the full immersion into Harriet Tubman don't skip it.

Yelp
This was a great experience. I give this five stars because the people who run this museum are incredible human beings. The love and care with which this museum is tended is so lovely, heartwarming, and inspiring. It is living history. I am so grateful to have had this experience and learn from this special place. During our trip to Cambridge we were listening to Catherine Clinton's audible biography of Tubman, and it shed so much light on the history of the Eastern Shore. Coming to this museum felt like a family's home turned museum; the way her story is told here is unique, personal, devastating, and yet hopeful. What an incredible life she led. Much appreciate this museum's dedication to her life story and legacy. The mural is poignant, asking the viewer to imagine what it must have been like to be saved by Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, and what she might ask us to do with our hard won freedom in order to carry out her legacy today.

Yelp
Thought it was the museum, but realized it was and art gallery kind of place. The mural around the corner is awesome!

Yelp
This was a great little educational museum called about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. The man who was in there was extremely helpful and enthusiastic to be there. Overall, I would recommend stopping here and take a look at the mural out back!

Yelp
Great museum with a lot of information and art work. A lot of historical information in writing and usually playing on the tv. There is a very nice mural painted on the back of the building. Do not miss this stop on the driving tour!

Yelp
Please let's keep this gem in business. The mural alone keeps the crowds coming. I've visited twice already. A great field trip for school groups too.

Yelp
I love the grassroots aspect of this small but mighty museum tribute to Harriet Tubman. Every display in this space presents a comprehensive view of a strong, fearless, and courageous Black woman's life whose story of liberation and freedom in America needs to be celebrated and shared through generations. Harriet Tubman is an iconic representation of Black Power to be revered. We (family) brought our young people, ages 7-16, during Spring break and I was glad to experience the feeling of immersion in Harriet Tubman's life. Kudos to the small group of volunteers who diligently keep the museum going. I could tell by their kind and pleasant interactions that it is a labor of love. My only disappointment was not being able to get a receipt for my souvenir (cash) purchases. Hopefully, that situation will be resolved quickly. As an educator, in a time when powerful American forces are attempting to rewrite, erase, and hide the truth of the African American experience, I highly recommend supporting this authentic museum with a visit and/or charitable donation.

Yelp
I always enjoy finding places in my national parks passport. FYI they do have the stamp there, just ask for it! The place is a bit small, but the people we talked with were very knowledgeable and friendly. I would like to go back down to go through the rest of the area associated with the underground railroad.

Yelp
A must see for the mural. Must go to rear side of the building. We came on a Sunday on the way back from ocean city, and the museum was closed. Not many other stores on the block. Cute diner across the street.
