I’m not impressed — and quite frankly, I’m very disappointed. I understand that younger generations may have been raised differently, and trust me, I get it. However, with the economy being as uncertain as it is right now, a sense of respect and basic decency should not be optional — not here, not anywhere.
I left Harris Teeter alone last year after experiencing blatant racism. I didn’t speak up at the time because I was genuinely shocked at the audacity and ignorance that still exists, especially in the South. But today confirmed something for me: people like me are clearly not welcomed in this grocery store.
The cashier never acknowledged my presence, even after I greeted him. I eventually decided to greet myself — and honestly, I had to laugh to keep from being angry. But beneath that laugh was disappointment. What I can’t seem to understand is this: money doesn’t have an ethnicity. My money doesn’t look any different than anyone else’s. There is no such thing as “ethnic money.”
