Best Roast Beef Sandwiches in Boston and on Massachusetts’ North Shore | Eater Boston

"Harrison’s — open at this address since 1984 and under a different name in Lawrence before — is popular with the Merrimack College crowd. It’s a messy sandwich, but it’s cheap, and the beef is plentiful. The interchanges that take place between the cashier and the kitchen staff are worth the price of admission. Order a super beef “four ways, no onions,” and the cashier will yell to his cooks, “super beef: four ways, no criers.” It’s the prime spot for a solid beef and even better restaurant parlance." - Terrence Doyle

Google
I went with a friend and we ordered the Jr. Roast beef and we shared some fries and drinks. They made it quick and delivered it to us. They made it the way we wanted it. It was so good that I had to bring a Super roast beef on an onion roll for my husband with the house sauce. Just be very specific. I didn't realize it came with mayo and sauce and my husband is not a mayo person. Luckily they put lots of sauce.

If you grew up in this part of the Merrimack Valley, Harrison’s is probably a place have been many times. No one can blame you for being skeptical that now reopened under new management, they would recapture the quality and taste that we all knew. People, the team here has knocked it out of the park. The roast beef is exactly how it used to be, they still have the Harrison’s brand sodas. In many ways, the new owners have improved on the old Harrison’s. The menu is expanded greatly, and the space feels clean. My friends and I are so glad we can come back to be regulars at a place we’ve loved for decades.

Google
We come back to visit family once a year and we always dropped by Harrisons. As other reviews said, we were dismayed that our spot might be gone... Fortunately the new owner has put down the gauntlet. Best roast beef sandwiches I've ever had, better than OG Harrisons. Great job! Nice to see an expanded menu as well, sorry J&M! Only thing that might need some work are the crinkle cut fries, they tasted a little "Freezery" and perhaps not full on crisp, hard to explain. Perhaps not cooked long enough? I love crinkles :D

Google
Harrison’s roast beef! Great food and menu. Prices are a little steep but I feel like they’ve gone up universally. Pizza is mediocre tho

Frank Laratonda

Google
I went to try the food with the new owners and I must say that the fried clams and shrimp were excellent ... I also ordered 2 large roast beefs to go which I ordered with ex mayo and cheesebut what really upset me is they put sauce on both and no cheese so my wife would not eat hers because she hates the sauce so that was over $15.wasted The bill was $89. Why can't people pay attention to the slips...if I wasn't 40 minutes away I would have returned the roast beef

Google
I heard the rave about Harrison’s roast beef, never been there since recently. The roast beef is great but the seafood is so fresh! Must try

Google
Great place for roast beef sandwiches with a spicy sauce or without the sauce any way you like it. The usual French fries and other fare such as pastrami sandwiches. Fast service & you can call ahead.

Google
It’s been a while since we got a chance to go to Harrison’s after they closed for a bit. After coming here again today I realized just how much I could miss having a roast beef sandwich. They haven’t lost their touch at making amazing food. Hope to be back soon

Yelp
Harrison's is officially closed. Many of us are saddened by this news but are grateful for the many many years of happiness this place has given us. No one will ever beat a Harrison's Roast Beef sandwich. EVER. https://andovermanews.com/andover-area-restaurant-closes-after-40-years/

Yelp
What can I say, this is my discovered go-to for roast beef! The staff is awesome, direct, straight, and helpful. Had 2 large roast beef and 1 medium roast beef with bbq/mayo and lettuce, my go-to here. Fries and Onion Rings. Why get roast beef anywhere else when Harrison's is within 10 minutes!
google avatar

Yelp
In the past, Harrison's RB used to be a great spot, but after lunch today, I won't be going back. 1st impression was the uncleanliness of the restaurant. 2nd, I found mouse poop on the ketchup containers given with my meal. Lastly, the food was subpar. The Roast beef was over cooked and bland...no seasonings. The fries were hard and soaked with oil which is a sign that the fryer oil is old and needs changing. I was quite disappointed and also embarrassed because I took a co-worker here and raved about how good Harrison's is, only to find out the hard way that it clearly is not good at all. I hate giving bad reviews, but quality of food, uncleanliness, and rodent issues are unacceptable to me when choosing a place to eat.

Yelp
Delicacy on a bun! Old time ambiance with no frills. Good for many occasions. Customization encouraged

Yelp
It's a dive with a very simple menu. Had a large roast beef. Note only the large comes with an onion roll. Awesome onion rings. No aus jus. Several condiments are available on the side or loaded. I went down the Mayo, horse radish and pepper relish path. Excellent sandwich. No eating in. Fast friendly service. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Gave it a 2nd chance. I went there on around 6pm, I willed in, and most of the lights were off. There were 3-4 people behind the counter talking amongst themselves, and I think I surprised them that they actually had a customer! I had to asked if they were still open. The roast beef sandwich I ordered was good. Too bad the place was so old and run down. Had to use the restroom to wash my hands, and it wasn't the cleanest. I swear they're going out of business. So sad to see.

Patrick W.

Yelp
Bummed to hear you guys closed. Lots of good memories helping lay brick and dropping in for a melt in the mouth roast beef, fries, and all the characters calling out orders. Best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Yelp
Went here once and that was enough. The place feels dead inside. The food was awful and the employees have attitudes. It also is pretty dirty and rough overall.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Ten years ago I thought this place was awful, went here because North Shore Beefs did a positive review so decided to give it another try. Worse than I remember. Ordered a Super Beef and a Fry. 1. Beef was GREY and tasteless. 2. The Onion Roll was the smallest on planet earth. 3. Fries were over cooked and full of grease. Like they were cooked previously and reheated. 4. Smallest portion on a $9.75 super beef on the North Shore. 5. Extremely filthy, board of health should stop by. If someone gave me a gift card to Harrison's I would donate to the local dog shelter,, because the beef was dog food quality. Two positives: 1. I'm not sick yet. 2. The portion was so small that I didn't have to suffer that long eating the grossness.

Yelp
Great Roast Beef & Crispy Fries with fair prices and friendly service. A neighborhood staple for as long as I can remember. Consistently great food!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Funkiest place ever. All staff are pierced, tattooed and efficient! Food is terrific and prices are great. I feel like it is a "biker's" food place but everyone is made to feel welcome. Especially like the way they call out the orders for sandwiches by the toppings. "Large, sauce, radish".
google avatar

Lyssa C.

Yelp
Been going to Harrison's as long as I can remember. After living away the first thing I crave and want when I get home is a Large, heavy sauce and cheese with light Mayo. This trip was no different. Food was exactly as ordered. Fries perfectly golden brown and extra sauce on the side to dip my fries. I was home for 10 days and managed to get 3 trips in! I wish someone could make this where we live now! May be a small shop but it provides a great big bite!

Yelp
Laughable and absurd to see another roast beef joint open up within a twelve mile radius..... Harrison's is the very best in every way! Why go elsewhere?

Jack C.

Yelp
Sorry Harrison's, but its time to go. Been a customer of Harrison's for about 20 years. Pretty much always enjoyed the beef here. For the last 5 years or so have kind of ignored the meth head looking folks who work there in favor of the good beef, but today its all over. I understand how hard it is to get good help but you at least have to try. Today they got the roast beef sandwich wrong, the fries were cold and it took at least 15 minutes to get the food after I had ordered. The wait is usually 5 minutes but Harrison's has finally hit rock bottom. For my 20 bucks there are plenty of better options all within a mile or two drive like Bella's or Londi's. Seeya Harrison's it was fun while it lasted.

Yelp
Just giving 2 stars on lack of customer service not a food review but think owners need to at least beware. Placed a phone order today and the man that answered had the worst attitude. I've never experienced such a thing here. I love the food but I am debating on whether I should continue to support them. I placed a medium size order at best and every time I added something he kept saying" what the hell and Jesus Christ under his breath" and I could hear him that's a completely unacceptable customer service experience, if he doesn't want to work and give with a client wants and orders then he shouldn't be working there! Extremely disappointed in the customer service on phone today! I usually have a very pleasant experience when ordering when the woman who works there answers but this guy today had the worst attitude! I hope he gets our order correct as he kept say Jesus Christ on my order.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
Great beef! It's not in the North Shore, so I was skeptical, but it was bomb! I hall for 3-way rare, light Mayo & that's exactly what I got. I would put Harrison's in the top 10 for best beefs in New England.
google avatar

Damien S.

Yelp
Appreciate the institutional status Harrison's has attained, having fed countless locals and Phillips students and faculty, and over the decades, having done so almost entirely unchanged. It's paneling and hand-writ menus and a big ol' beef slicer, front and center, and the lingering smell of fry oil, which sadly(?) cranks out the most memorable part of our lunch here: crinkle cut fries and onion rings. The roast beef itself was cold, dry and layered with tough, non-rendered fat. I cannot imagine this is the standard, especially after taking a peek at some of these Yelp pics, but it was our experience, and that's a shame. I'd be willing to bet North Shore beefers who want BBQ and mayo and all that jazz on their onion roll 'wich will be willing to overlook overroasted, dry meat, but I take mine with just a bit of jus and horseradish, and unfortunately, Harrison's stack simply didn't stack up. Still though, those fries and rings are bomb.
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Food is a 5, but atmosphere is a 3 at best, so thus the 4 stars. I guess if I want atmosphere I should take a drive down to Strega. The roast beef here is consistently great. It's cooked to a pink perfection and piled high on the bun. Ask for cheese and sauce or we just can't be friends! Any time I'm in the area, I try to stop in and get my fix of roast beef and some awesome onion rings.

Gary F.

Yelp
I've been going to Harrison's Roast beef for a long time. I go there fora roast beef sandwich and fries. They have the Best fries. Great roast beef too! Make sure when ordering fries to tell them we'll done. You'll be glad you did. I may have to try their hamburger too, due to a previous review.
google avatar

Katie E.

Yelp
I think it's amazing that you told someone to go f@ck themself because they wanted lettuce on their roast beef sandwich. Order a salad if you want lettuce.
google avatar

Bethany C.

Yelp
Harrison's does not know how to put lettuce on a roast beef sandwich people. Even when requested, its refused.. So I went were they put lettuce on their roast beef, or take customers requests. Costello's Roast Beef everyone. Nice to their customers Picture of Costello's Roast Beef with frigging lettuce people... yesss to lettuce..
google avatar

Daniel Y.

Yelp
4 stars for the roast beef sandwich only!!! Large roast beef comes in a onion roll Roast beef is tender juicy and tasty! However I ordered with bbq sauce and they drowned the sandwich to point where it was just a complete mess to eat. Dining in the restaurant was pretty much a order up and pick a table to sit. Clean off whatever was left behind from previous occupants before you. Don't expect anyone to clean the tables for you so if you find the tables to be tacky to the touch, you would be correct! All the tables are tacky to the touch. Order to go but sauce on the side.
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
We have been coming to Harrison's for so long and we always LOVE it. Funny thing is we had heard about the review regarding lettuce on the sandwich. Today we ordered 4 sandwiches and two came with lettuce which we had not ordered. It made my family laugh that we got lettuce without wanting it but that other person wanted it but couldn't get it.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Stopped in to try a roast beef sandwich, I was VERY pleased! The sandwich was done just right.
google avatar

Jodi S.

Yelp
Still and will always be the best no other RB place compares to how awesome u guys are. Keep Up making the delicious sandwiches n fries.
google avatar

Meredythe F.

Yelp
I absolutely love their roast beef! I've actually used DoorDash at one point to have them deliver.

Dee C.

Yelp
Nothing like it was! Expensive they forgot a sandwich and fries! Dirty gross never again! What happened???line used to be so long no one there now! Sad! Clean up! Hire people who want to work! How hard is it to pack a food bag correctly
google avatar

Toni W.

Yelp
Great size lobster roll for the price! My only negative review is that there hasn't been a time that I haven't bitten into the roll and ate a piece of lobster shell. (Which freaks me out a bit).
google avatar

Jenna P.

Yelp
No bells and whistles at Harrison's. Quick service and not too many options to keep the undecided undecided for long. I guess if you're in the mood for a sandwich that is mostly a big wad of thinly-sliced roast beef, then this is your spot. The basic bread option is a hamburger bun that is used for whatever size you order featuring progressively larger wads of meat for larger sizes. I wouldn't say each sandwich is "crafted" here, but that's not what it's about. I think the idea is function over fashion with these sandwiches. We will come back, but we will also be trying other spots too
google avatar

Sean O.

Yelp
Mouth watering wafer thin sliced roast beef prepared right in front of you. Order the Large Roast beef on an onion roll, you will not regret it. Can't ask for a better roast beef sandwich in the Merrimack Valley, they are that good.
google avatar

Adam H.

Yelp
Best roast beef in the game! It's a classic. I just went on Saturday and got medium beef 3 way and it was just as good as i remembered. The beef is warm and tender and the sauce had the perfect tang and spice. It's a perfect roast beef sandwich. Highly recommend to give it a try in you are in the North Andover/Lawrence area.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Harrison's is a time capsule in all the best ways. A local restaurant serving no-nonsense outstanding roast beef sandwiches, the kind the just melt in your mouth. A neighborhood crew working in 1980s decor. Friendly service. Great value. You really can't go wrong here unless you don't like roast beef, and in that case I don't know how to help you.
google avatar

Steven K.

Yelp
My Brother and I used to do lunch at Harrison's frequently. Sadly a couple years ago, my Brother passed away and the thought of going here was too painful. I'm back and after two + years the large roast beef is still massive and delicious (just as I remember) and the french fries are still exquisite. The best in the area. The beef is tender and outstanding, delivered exactly as requested with extra mayonnaise. The french fries are prepared patiently so as to slightly crisp the outside to golden perfection while the inside is hot and fresh with potato goodness. I am relieved to see the consistency at Harrison's to be intact. In this day and age of reducing size and quality while raising prices it is refreshing to find everything as it always has been at this very special shop. Thank you for not changing a thing!

Yelp
If I want pickles on my 3-way, please put pickles on my 3-way. Don't tell me you can't do it while I am staring at a glass jar of pickles. I've had the best of the best, Nicks (Beverly), Bill and Bobs (Salem), Kelly's (multiple), Liberty Bell (Stoneham), Courtyard (Newburyport)......they ALL make your big beef the way YOU want it. "We don't put pickles on roast beef" What? You have pickles right? You have roast beef sandwiches right? What is the problem? Niki's on the other side of town may not have the history of Harrison's, but at least they make food the way you want it. Harrison's is surviving on the fact they have been around forever anyway. Beef is overcooked. They skimp on meat. Crinkle-cut fries while "nostalgic" give them an added opportunity to carry cheap bagged frozen potatoes while charging you 100 times more than they actually cost. If you go to Harrison's for the crinkle cut fries, you're better off served picking up a bag of store brand crinkle cuts and frying them with a little vegetable oil in a pan. You can make a comparable beef with a pound of Market Basket brand shaved shaved beef (slightly warmed), a store brand toasted hamburger bun, some James River BBQ sauce (Butcher Boy carries it), and a dollop of Sysco (commercial food source provider) brand mayo. Essentially, that's what all Roast Beefs are anyways. Beef may even be better from Market Basket *gasp* *double gasp*. Dirty, dingy, rude, dirty, outdated, unfriendly, dirty.....did I mention its dirty? I rarely even order pickle on a 3-way, on that day, I felt like it. Next time, just put the pickle on my sandwich. BTW. A simple wipe of your surfaces and maybe a replacement of the dingy, dirty, bacteria and grunge infested commercial carpet wouldn't hurt would it?

Yelp
I was a Harrison's naysayer for a while but after quitting a job next to my favorite RB place I came back to Harrison's. This past year I've eaten prob 25-30 sandwiches and they've been fantastic. The staff is also very friendly.

Thomas L.

Yelp
I gave them a bad review awhile ago because it really was bad cooked food. I wanted roast beef and thought I'd give them another chance. The fries were perfect, I watched them cook and they do double cook them . I know they do this to speed up the orders because if you order fries elsewhere it takes a while for a basket full to cook. The beef was rare to medium rare and tasty. They have redeemed them selves today and will go back to a loyal customer. The cooking oil was fresh that's what made the difference. Ps. The woman cooking the fries was VERY polite and had excellent customer service attitude. Something other employees should take notice too. Well done please pass on to the employees especially to her. A smile can go a long way when dealing with customers.

Parker W.

Yelp
Still my favorite roast beef place north of Boston. Just had a beef, Cheese, Onion, Works and it was just like freshman year, 1995. Add some Crinkle cut fries, a pizza roll and a dill pickle and it's food coma time!
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
Always the one to beat. Yes, it's a dive at this point but the sandwiches are great. Rare roast beef with onion, mayo, and heavy sauce is my go-to. Messy and delicious. And the right amount of beef that stays on the bun as you eat it. More is not always better. Crispy, greasy fries for when you're in the mood for that. Can't go wrong with the chicken fingers or a pickle while you're at it.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
The only reason to come here is the roast beef sandwiches.... onion rings a disappointment, staff was underwhelming, and the restaurant was run-down.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Sorry guys, 4:30pm on a Friday and you're out of rolls for Lobster Rolls?! Walk across the street and buy a couple packs of Frankfurt Rolls at Richdale. Drive by daily - empty parking lot most days, doesn't bode well for this once great Merrimack Valley standard. I've already stopped getting roast beef here, couple other good options in town, but I do like their Lobster Roll on a Friday. But I'll pay a bit extra at the real lobster roll shop down the road. They never run out of rolls. Sigh.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Never been disappointed. The roast beef sandwiches are great and I love the onion rings.
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
Probably the best roast beef you'll ever try. Customer service is often good, BUT, it can be very bad on occasion. I've been frequenting the place for years, they know me now and are extremely friendly. However, they have been very cold, rude, even bordering on hostile to me in the past. BE BRAVE, the food is worth it!

Mike R.

Yelp
Is it JUST ME? i dunno, anyone else think roast beef sandwiches taste kind of bland? Had the Deluxe, large, onion roll, spicy sauce. The sauce didn't seem to bond to the plentiful roast beef in a way that gave it a zing. Rather bland. Fries and onion rings ok. Have been to the much praised NICK's in Beverly and wasn't thrilled either. The ONLY time i had a roast beef sandwich that bowled me over was the long ago establishment of Buzzy's Roast Beef near Charles St. and the old prison in Boston. Maybe my taste buds have changed. Anyways, a good, steady lunch time crowd will sustain them.
google avatar

Olivia K.

Yelp
The hype is real; Definitely the best roast beef I've found anywhere! Super consistent, you always get what your expecting. The sauce is perfect! (Always have to get extra) It's nothing fancy, very deli-style dine in, but casual is best way to go when I'm about to get covered in sauce anyways
google avatar

Jean W.

Yelp
My kids and husband love Harrison's Roast beef. It's good when you dont want to cook. The cashier there is a nice guy.
google avatar

Justine R.

Yelp
I forgot about this diamond! The staff were super friendly and outgoing. Food was cooked super fast! We literally ordered, picked out condiments and sat at a table, food was done! Fries were old school crinkle cut, crispy and fresh! The spinach roll is super for a quick snack! You have to try a giant pickle! They also have an old school Koolaide machine! Prices were reasonable; our order totaled $28 and some change. We ordered chicken fingers, large fries, two spinach rolls, a giant pickle, two drinks and a Large Roast beef on an onion roll three way. The inside is similar to a sub shop with dining tables. Food was great and we will be back!
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
I visited Harrison's for the 2nd time in the 19 years I've lived in North Andover. When I told the male cashier I didn't know how to order, he literally called me a 'retard'! Then he proceeded to mess up my order?!?! I've never been more grossed out by a restaurant experience in my life and would never return to this filthy RB place!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Went here a few weeks ago . I was really excited about going here due to all the hype. That's all it is , hype . Got a super beef , meat was way overcooked no pink at all!! The sauce was minimal. And charging extra for lettuce and tomatoes give me a break. There are way better roast beef joints out there. Very very disappointed.
google avatar

Charlene V.

Yelp
The Roast Beef and frys are the best around.... the 3 star rating is just due to the restaurant itself. It's time to clean the windows inside and out.... time to make some upgrades and not see flys flying around the kitchen area.

Diana A.

Yelp
The BEST roast beef sandwiches!!!! Got these all the time after sports in school and always a treat going back. Love the vibe and people that work there too. The best sandwich is sauce, mayo, and cheese -- sometimes extra sauce!
