Harris's

"Long-standing, split-level restaurant with a spiral staircase and an unusual Welsh black metal plate ceiling; run by a keen husband and wife. Classical cooking uses seasonal Cornish produce; try the steamed lobster when it's in season." - Michelin Inspector

Absolutely out of this world food! So glad we booked this restaurant in advance. The decor was lovely, warm and inviting. The service was friendly and with a smile, and the food was delicious. The monkfish risotto was really special and worth trying. My husband has the goats cheese starter and steak as a main and loved both of them. Desserts were also great, with the chocolate torte being utterly scrumptious. I could have had another one, it was that good. They allowed us to bring our dog, which was very kind of them. The thyme sorbet as a palette cleanser was a lovely added touch. Just a great restaurant!

What a gem! Best restaurant we have been to in years. Food was fresh, of high quality, interesting menu and Mrs Garris and assistant were positively charming. Can’t recommend enough.

We come down to Penzance at least 3 times per year to our holiday bungalow at Kenegie Manor. This year saw our 50th wedding anniversary and as a present my brother treated us to dinner at Harris's. Tucked down a side street (New Street) off Market Jew Street we have never previously noticed this establishment. The front of house staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable. For starters we had Cornets of smoked salmon with fresh Newlyn white crab meet followed by grilled fillet steak with bearnaise sauce (me) and Roast monkfish on saffron risotto. We finished the meal with creme brulee. All dishes were beautifully presented and extremely tasty. Surprisingly the sauté potatoes accompanying the main meal were fantastic. It was a wonderful meal to celebrate our anniversary. We will be back next time we are down.

Came here with my boyfriend for a dinner during the bank holiday weekend. It seemed abnormally quiet as did the whole of Penzance this bank holiday! Very odd and the hosts agreed it wasn’t the usual experience. The food was unpretentious and absolutely delicious. There was even an unexpected complimentary palette cleanser of a homemade rosemary sorbet between the starters and main course. The hosts were extremely knowledgeable and answered all questions about produce (all local), and explained that all food including ice creams and sorbets and things that would normally be bought in are all made absolutely fresh on the premises, and you could taste it. They were charming and welcoming, unbelievably attentive and made you feel like a regular, and to boot we had some great conversation with them. The decor is also classic, charming and the restaurant has a very cosy and intimate bistro feel. The experience was honestly really really special and left you able to feel the sense of pride that the owners feel and put into this lovely establishment. A testament to itself that it’s been open since the 70s, which is a true rarity in the restaurant industry. We would recommend to anyone to support this wonderful local business and will absolutely be returning.

One of our favourite little restaurants for an intimate dinner for two. The food is perfectly cooked every time and the few staff are attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The wine selection is good too. There is not much else I can say as there is nothing to fault here.

We had dinner at Harris's while visiting from London. The restaurant is wonderful in so many ways. The food is superb (especially the crab salad entrée and the desserts); the staff are lovely; and the restaurant is beautifully quaint, particularly because it seats only a small number of tables. I strongly recommend it!

Yelp
The best place to eat in the area. I have lived in Penzance for over 40 years and for me Harris's is the best restaurant. The same couple have owned this establishment and the cooking is exceptional

Yelp
Can be very good but at those prices you'd expect it to be. Slightly odd place - very old school English fine dining. Wine selection is very good.

Yelp
Reasonable food but very expensive for what it is. Service from the maitre d was a little bit snooty - snooty with a smile; an implied 'I don't have to be doing this you know'. We've been twice now, and it was the same on each occasion.
