Iowa State Fair Food: Toward a Theory of American Festival Cuisine | Eater

"A bright, locally iconic stand known for hot, freshly fried cheese curds — chunks of fresh, unaged cheddar encased in a crisp exterior and served with marinara, ketchup, ranch, or a mix. While the canned marinara can disappoint, eating the hot curds straight from the basket and dunking them in ketchup while walking the illuminated midway captures the quintessential greasy‑finger joy of festival eating." - Meghan McCarron

The food portion is great and so is the taste. We got Ruben and Prime Rib, it’s so tender for the rib and well seasoned. The butter grilled bread of Ruben is 10/10 crunchy and tasty. Highly recommend mushrooms for sides, juicy savory and tender. (The vegetables just like Costco frozen vegetables “nah”) The vibe of the bar is nice, chilling and no pushing sell for anything. Dining in here just like go to the same old place you like to have your comfort food even it’s my first time here.

👍 Cafeteria style : Line up - order and choose - pay - find your favorite table. Waiters are attentive to help bring your tray(s) and etc. Remember to leave a tip on the table. 👍 Traditional American comfort food, with that comforting flavors. Near extinct, please support this business more often and keep it going. 👍 Super friendly services. Cozy seating areas. Prices are the most reasonable. 💖 Def a gem in the Bay Area!

Google
My favorite Hofbrau restaurant. I love the oven roasted turkey and corned beef. It’s cafeteria style, where you get a tray and go through line to pick your food. I like being able to see all of the meats, entrees and daily specials. You’ll end up having a hard time deciding and wanting more than one thing. They have a variety of hot and cold sides, salads and desserts. Truly a unique experience.

Love Harry’s ! Great American food at a very reasonable price. I literally like everything on the menu but the carved roast beef is my favorite. Such high quality!

Google
Love coming to Harry’s Hofbrau for a homey meal. We enjoy the pastrami and tri tip here but thought the roast beef was too chewy. Mashed potatoes here are amazinggg!! Line can be long but moves quickly. Good value for the price, and they have a good beer selection

12/1/2025: The Christmas decorations are up. I didn't see a tree though. There was hella traffic coming from SF to RWC. By the time I got to Harry's, it was 8pm and no line. My order was a Danish beef steak (minced meat patty) $16.89, available on Monday nights. It felt like a Salisbury steak in American terms. I wonder what made it a Danish steak. This dish came with a tangy tomato tasting sauce with mushrooms and onions. It was easy to chew as it was minced meat with less fat than a hamburger patty. It tasted fine. It came with a dinner roll, mash potatoes and a side. In my case, I selected coleslaw. Original review: Harry's Hofbrau is awesome. It is a cafeteria type of restaurant. It reminded me of a better version of the old Tad's Steakhouse's on Powell's St. My meal tonight was a tri-tip steak dinner $23 and a Manhattan clam chowder $6.75. Both were OK. The tri-tip steak was perfectly cooked medium rare. My sides were the mash potatoes and mushrooms. The mash potatoes were drenched in gravy. The soup had a strong tangy tomato taste. Well done everyone at Harry's Hofbrau.

Google
The roast beef was great. Turkey was a bit dry. I won't get the Ceasar salad again, there wasn't hardly any dressing, it was bland lettuce. Friendly staff, I'd go back and try something different

Google
I'm so happy we found this gem!! Our first time but will not be our last!! First of many !! The food was amazing! Line was long, but the wait was not long at all . We have ben looking for a hofbrau style restaurant for quite some time now, so coming from Fresno was a risk we are glad we took on Harry's. Huge portions of lots of fresh home cooked options you will be stuffed, so come ready to pig out! Also, expect to be in total food coma 😉 staff was amazing from the greeter, to the line cooks and the wait staff everyone was very helpful & patient. Thank for having us Harry's Hofbrau 🤍

Yelp
it was an extra ordinary day at work. I am a nurse working San Jose Kaiser. One My pt about to die ( Comfort Care) and I simply asked what you wish to eat we could try to get that for you. he said it is not possible that restaurant is not near by. I asked him to write the name of the restaurant since I never heard about it He said Harry's Hofbrau Hot turkey sandwich and Mashed potato. I looked online it is in Redwood City. We were thinking to order Uber eat or I was going to ask my kids to go get it. My Management team Contacted this restaurant they happily take pt's order and delivered from Redwood City to San Jose Kaiser with out no cost. what an amazing Service Pt had happy lunch he was so thankful and We Kaiser family Give Big Thanks to your Service. We will come and try your food . thanks again. awesome

Yelp
OMG! This place is AMAZING! There used to be one in San Jose (where I live) that I used to go to fairly frequently. I was so sad when they closed it and didn't know it still existed in other cities. It's been at least 15 years since I've eaten there. Today was my first going to the one in Redwood City. It was worth the drive! My first bite of their delicious gravy brought back a flood of memories! The food and the atmosphere were both fantastic. My friend ordered the roasted turkey plate and a piece of carrot cake and I ordered my crazy favorite meal that I always used to get years ago. An open faced roast beef sandwich (I prefer beef over turkey, but LOVE their turkey gravy) on a French roll with stuffing, and covered in turkey gravy. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. The place is huge inside, with lots of rooms it eat at and at least p rooms that you'll be used for private parties. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas when we were there. (I've obscured the faces in the pictures for privacy reasons.)

Yelp
Well here we go. Nestled right on El Camino Real a little bit north of Five Points" in RWC lies this peninsula legend. Known for their down home Hofbrau style food, it really has not changed in years. I went back the other day with some friends and it was a nice time. We had some of their plates, I had the turkey with potatoes and stuffing dinner with some of the vegies. Oh yes and I had some jello :-) Years ago I thought jello was for youngsters and old people, and now I am one of those!! ;-) If you have not been here, really should go in for the holidays. The staff is nice, the cooks are great and cook fiercly for the public, they want to make sure you have a good experience. The inside is decorated for this holiday. Thank you Harry's Hofbrau for your legacy continuing on. For those of us in the mid to South Peninsula say from San Carlos down to Sunnyvale, this is the place. There are other locations, however since Mountain View shut down years ago, this is the only other one in the mid peninsula, then you have one headed north in Foster City. Been coming to this place since the early/ mid 1980s. Thank you Harry's Hofbrau RWC..Happy Holidays!

Yelp
Great stick to your ribs food! Lately I've always gotten a pastrami plate with mashed potatoes and juice on the side. Old world cafeteria style with trays and you go from server to server. They're friendly and accommodating. Big selection of pies for dessert (which I try to resist). The bar is extensive with lots of beers and ales on tap. It's the only place I know that has Pliny the Elder on tap (which I don't try to resist). Large dining room so there is always a comfortable place to sit and enjoy your food and company. An institution. Recommended.

Yelp
Boyfriend wanted to try out Harry's Hofbrau since the original spot we were going to go to didn't open until 3pm, so we opted to try Harry's instead. The inside of this spot gave a very home-y feel. We didn't sit inside though because we had our dog. Would like to experience dining inside though. We ordered one open face sandwich with roast beef. The meal was very comforting. My only complaint was that the food was cold. My boyfriend said when they took out the roast beef, it was steaming and the foods are sitting under heat lamps - as this spot is like a cafeteria style. So, I was bummed because I like my food to be hot or at least warm, but it was just cold. We would come back to dine inside and possibly try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Harry's Hofbrau is great! My wife and I were in Redwood City last night and had dinner in one of the few remaining Harry's locations. Long ago, we were patrons of the Mountain View location, and then the San Jose location. We were very sad when the last one in the South Bay closed. At least Redwood City remains! It is just like the ones we have been going to for decades. (Unfortunately it is a bit far for us). The decor is the same great traditional Hofbrau decor, the food is the same great selection. Last night we both had the Beef Stroganoff ($18.49 each for the dinner plate: Stroganoff over noodles (or rice), a side dish, and bread and butter. We had sides of Red cabbage, mushrooms, and a Caesar Salad. The Beef Stroganoff was DELICIOUS! Creamy sauce with tender beef! I thought that the red cabbage was good, but my wife thought it was too vinegary. The salad was just so-so. But the stroganoff was soooo good. Long ago, you could just buy the food a-la-carte, but that is no longer the case. You can only buy the dinner plate. Since I did not get rice/noodles and bread with mine, the cashier said that I should get an extra side dish since she had to charge me the one set price. (She blamed it on the new cash registers). It is a lot of food to eat. Anyway, regardless of the full dinner place with sides only policy, it is worth it and priced well.

Yelp
arrived around 4pm on a Monday for a late Lunch / early Dinner so any potential rush was dogged. 3 decent size dinning rooms with one shared with what was given the hour a busy bar. lots of parking. as for service it was attentive and instructive, though there were only 2 of us ordering at the counter at 4pm. there were several meats available to be carved with my choice being the Brisket as a plate. based on my visit the food being served is flavorful and the Hofbrau is a good value destination Some Dinner Specials per the website in case you want to plan a visit around them BEER BRAISED BRISKET - Monday ITALIAN SHORT RIBS - Tuesday ST. LOUIS RIBS, CHICKEN FRIED STEAK - Wednesday CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE - Thursday Braised prime rib on the bone - Friday PRIME RIB - Saturday WEINERSCHNITZEL - Sunday Check the website for current daily specials if you want to plan a visit https://www.harryshofbrau.com/menus/#daily-specials

Yelp
This is the first time I went to this location. Decades ago there was one in Santa Clara/San Jose. It was great to see that it is still around. It was like a blast from the past for me with (basically) the same menu and the same quality of delicious food. Fast cafeteria line service. Rustic decor that felt like a little Deutschland. My one complaint (and thus the -1 star), parking is *scarce* like even on a weekday for lunch at a later lunch time than most have SCARCE.

Yelp
This was our second visit here and we enjoyed both times. We had the beef stroganoff over rice, the chicken fried steak, and the tri tips dinner. The entrees were all good and the sides were even better. Don't sleep on the stuffing or the rolls! The workers make sure you get what is included with your order and check if you want anything else. After paying, you select your own table, but I have seen that there are staff available to help you carry your tray to your table as well. The people clearing tables and helping to remove trays and make room on your table are the real surprise - fast and efficient and also helpful for when you want a to-go box for your leftovers. Overall, this is a solid place!

Yelp
I hadn't actually been to a Harry's Hofbrau. It screamed 1950's like nothing's changed, which can be a good thing.. the schnitzel was really good. The saurkraut was good and sour. I was hoping the potato salad was the German sour one, it was not, no harm no foul. The prime rib sandy was very good. The Caesar salad needs the croutons on the side, they were all soggy. The bread roll was very good!

Yelp
I love Harry's Hofbrau! This is stick-to-your-bones comfort food at its finest! We miss the one in SJ with all of our hearts but try to make it out to this one when we can. Cafeteria style eatery, you get in line and grab a tray and tell the servers your pick. Hot, steaming window in front of you displays all the meats and sides you can dream of. Food 5/5: Our favorites here include the turkey leg dinner, hot open faced sandwich smothered in mashed potatoes and gravy, tri tip sandwich and turkey enchiladas. The stuffing here is a gooey, hot mess, maybe I'm weird but it works here and I love it! My sister also loves their Oktoberfest selections when it's in season. Their seating is spacious and there's usually a spot to find even on the busiest of nights. I love their mix of wooden round tables, booths and large chairs. It gives me the feeling of being at some old German pub. We've celebrated many birthdays and special occasions here and we hope to continue for as long as we can. R.I.P Harry's in SJ!

Yelp
You know that Dolly Parton song which was also massively covered and boosted by Whitney Houston? Yup yup well that's how I feel about this awesome eatery. Check out my original write-up; I totally stand by it. My friend who never tried Harry's finally did when we went together months ago, and it was a great meal in a fine festive atmosphere. The Oktoberfest special included a main of Polish sausage and schnitzel dressed in gravy. I asked for an extra ladle of the gravy, warm German potato salad, red cabbage pickled, salad (of which there was many variety, but I got regular garden salad) and ranch dressing, choice of wheat roll or white dinner roll with two pats of butter. All of that was tasty to the max, and more than enough for a meal.. I couldn't finish it. The value is totally rad. This type of cafeteria and hofbrau style meal is something very special, traditional and just.. rarer and rarer as we move inexorably further into the 21st century. I want to enjoy it as much as possible while I'm walking the Earth. So if you haven't eaten here, get yourself and family and friends over to Harry's Hofbrau for a comforting fun and delectable filling meal. Because Harry's... And eye i eye eye i i eye Will always Love you ooh ooh ooh you Will always Love you

Yelp
Great option for a quick and homey meal. Chicken and turkey were a bit dry and the meals are simple.

Yelp
Come back to San Jose!!!! Came last Saturday shortly after it opened. I was in awe of its size. The restaurant appeared bigger than the closed San Jose location. Not crowded so we were able to waltz through their cafeteria-style and find a table once I paid. It's a little overwhelming.. the menu because it has variety and their prices are fair. I wanted to order everything. Gavin wasn't too hungry so he only wanted a side of macaroni and cheese. I worked out and didn't eat so I ordered the open face turkey sandwich (dark and white meat), mashed potatoes, and drowned in their rich and thick gravy. I also ordered a side of Cesar salad. Oh, the turkey meat was tender! No option to tip when you pay. There is an ATM machine next to cashier area. I pulled out cash to tip. I am not sure whether beverages (sodas) can get free refills but I noticed a guy asking for his refill. I go to Whis-Purr Rescue every Saturday. This place might be part of my weekly rotation. Who knows. All I know was that I had the most comforting meal in the world.

Yelp
Updated review. Came back for the prime rib. It was good. Got mashed potatoes, mac n cheese and brocoli salad. Asked for the aju sauce on the side. Food was good for the price. Hearty portions. Love the aju sauce with the prime rib and the horseradish sauce they got in the table. Service was okay...the person helping me seemed more annoyed I asked for aju sauce and gravy on the side with my mashed potato. As mentioned in my previous review, San Leandro was more warmer. I'd still come back to this location cause their prime rib is good. Their corned beef doesn't look as appealing like San Leandro. The bar was a different story though. Bartender was super friendly! In conclusion, I'd come back to this location for the prime rib.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to roast beef and traveled out of my way to try Harry's Hofbrau. However, the cut of roast beef was cooked to medium/medium well. I like a rare roast beef that is edged with fat (this cut has no fat at all). It did not look appealing. I opted to follow the guy in front of me's choice and got the turkey leg platter with mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and a side of red cabbage. The turkey leg was overcooked. The stuff was okay but bland. The potatoes and gravy were unremarkable though I expected this to be the case as usually the meat in a Hofbrau is the shining star and potatoes a supporting role! The cranberry sauce was fine-I assume it is the commercial canned version. The pats of butter tasted like when their left in refrigerator to long and they above the flavors of other items. They were not individually sealed. I appreciated the free parking and the large dining area with many seating options to choose from. The tables were promptly clean by a competent busser who was doing a great job. The price for the meal was right and more affordable that most restaurants these days. Overall experience was acceptable though I left disappointed in the food.

Yelp
1909 El Camino Real Redwood City, CA 94063 In Redwood City, you will find one of the Bay Area's favorite restaurants, - Harry's Hofbrau. This cafeteria style eatery offers up hearty meals at fair prices. You get in line, grab a tray, and then tell the servers what you want. All the foods are presented buffet style behind glass. There's also freshly carved meats and a bar. I was there with a Yelp Elite friend, and I ordered the roast beef dinner for $18.99. Beautiful slices of freshly carved roast beef piled on a plate with gravy. I added mashed potatoes, salad, roll, and drink. Delicious and satisfying! The interior is a dimly lit dining room with old fashioned decor. You will find both tables and booths. It was cool to see a suit of armor standing guard near the restrooms. Harry's Hofbrau is located near the junction of Woodside Rd and El Camino Real. It has a huge parking lot. Harry's Hofbrau in Redwood City was opened in 1954, and is part of the unique charm of the SF Bay Area. They have another restaurant in San Leandro. Support Local Business!

Yelp
Prices are incredible, especially for the quantity of food. Beer selection is extensive. Is it the best prime rib in the Bay Area? Certainly not. But everywhere else will be twice as expensive. The vibes are old school cozy. We went around 4:30pm on a Saturday and there were a good amount of people there, but no line and plenty of open seats. By 5pm it was bumping.

Yelp
Always a tough decision on what to order. So many great food options to pick up. You really can't go wrong on your decision. Tonight got the steak plate and you will be leaving stuffed. Cooked to perfection. You also get a side of mash potatoes and a side salad. Definitely left full after finishing my meal. The service is great and friendly here. Parking can get difficult even with parking lots on both side of the restaurant I had to circle the lots several times. Come with group and everyone can pay on one tab or individually so easy to split the the bill if you need

Yelp
Harry's never changes which is great! Always perfectly cooked and carved deliciousness. Yummy sides and desserts, too I got it to go this time but the atmosphere and service is always on point

Yelp
4th of July lunch at Harry's was good. It's great they are open on holidays. Thanksgiving was fun but super long line. The tri tip dinner is the best, it comes with 2 sides. The mashed potatoes and Chinese chicken salad are my fav sides.

Yelp
I grew up in Mountain View and this was one of the places that our family would go and eat on a Friday night. Came here with some friends who said we are going to Harry's Hofbrau and was I excited. parking was a little bit of a chllenge and we drove from Los Gatos to get here! It was a long line but it was moving quickly and they had people on the floor helping you find a seat for your party. I order the Turkey platter with masjed potatoes and stuffing with cranberry sauce. It was so good! The Turkey was moist and not dry and very tastey. My wife ordered the prome rib sandwhich and she was just as pleased. We finished of the meal by splitting a strawberry short cake. Can we say .... HEAVENLY! Here is what I appreciated it brought back so many memories for me to eat here and the food is still constantly good. By the way ... the batrooms were clean. Way to go in making a memory!

Yelp
I arrived around 4:45 PM, and while the parking lot was fairly full, I was lucky to snag a spot. I decided to try one of their specials: sirloin tips with mushrooms over pasta. While the portion size was generous, the food itself wasn't very hot--temperature-wise, it could have been warmer. The line moved pretty quickly, taking about 15 minutes to get through. As for the flavor, it was a bit on the bland side, but I understand that's the style they seem to be going for. However, the leftovers the next day tasted much better, especially after I added some Tabasco sauce to kick up the flavors--it made a huge difference! Overall, I think I'll give it another shot next time but go for a sandwich instead. The food was decent, but I'm curious to try something with a bit more seasoning.

Yelp
Great Hofbrau- so many choices- I love the roast beef most of all! Also: fish, Turkey, sausage, salads too. Great sides- roasted veggies are good, Mac n cheese (really cheesy) , mashed potatoes and gravy, beans.... They also have MANY draft beers. Get a senior meal - portions are a bit smaller, costs less and ice cream or jello is included. Lots of seating, in dining room or in bar.
google avatar

Trini S.

Yelp
Carved turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and grilled veggies! Delicious! Such a nostalgic meal and one that my family will happily drive an hour away to taste. Friendly service and still the same cute decor all throughout the restaurant.
google avatar

Edith M.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite. Though price has gone up (like everywhere else) still pretty reasonable. I did notice the dressing is mushy to my liking, happened twice already. I will skip it next time. My favorite is turkey dinner, noticed a little less turkey meat. I will order the turkey sandwich next time because I don't need all the extras that go with the senior meal. Would still come here whenever my grandsons play at Twin Creek. It's on my way home. Also the workers are very nice and pleasant.
google avatar

Yelp
The positives are that this place is huge and spectacularly decorated. Coats of armor, statues, and old time relics line the walls. You could spend a lot of time just walking around and looking at everything, which is pretty fun, especially if you have kids. The menu is expansive, you are not lacking for choices. I had the tri tip with mashed potatoes and a side of blueberry pie and was pretty happy with my meal. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it was decent and affordable. The line to order was a nightmare however! We were here at 1115 and waited over a half an hour to get to the front of the line and place our order. After ordering, the food was made right in front of us and then we carried it out to the table. It was an interesting experience. If I find my way back I might check out the biergarten next time which looked very inviting.
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
This place is solid! There are so many great food options. I'd rate the food a solid 4, but the ambiance is a 5--it's a casual, no-fuss spot to enjoy good food and drinks. I had the prime rib plate and the turkey plate, both of which were satisfying. There's also plenty of parking, which is always a plus. This is a great spot for large groups since there's ample seating. I also appreciate that you pay first and then sit down--it makes for a more relaxed dining experience since you can focus on enjoying your meal without worrying about the check at the end. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Drove up to Harrys from San Jose today arriving at 1:40pm hoping to avoid lunchtime rush. Didn't work, we stood in line about 15 mins, but service was efficient at counter to order 2 turkey dinners that come with stuffing mashed potatoes and a huge amount of turkey gravy. You choose 1 side order hot or cold, I chose red cabbage (hot) There were so many options for side orders, either hot or cold. You also get roll and butter and cranberry sauce. Price was $19.89. They do offer a senior menu that's a couple bucks cheaper, but you get jello or ice cream and a drink. But you also get less meat. My companion uses a walker, and a server appeared suddenly at register and carried her tray and I barely managed mine. We are both seniors. I asked him to find us a nice quiet place and a booth, and he found the perfect spot. Another server saw me struggling and grabbed my tray before I dropped it. Thank goodness! I had a side order of red cabbage, and enjoy anything that is German, it was slightly too vinegary. But nice otherwise. The meal was huge, and we brought lots of it home. The turkey, gravy and stuffing all tasted so fresh. We both had dessert, a light fluffy coconut cream pie, and I had carrot cake that may well be the best I ever tasted. Soooo moist, such flavor, and some fairly soft type of nuts. Cream cheese frosting. It is a generous portion for $6.09. Absolutely delicious! We decided to celebrate our Thanksgiving at Harry's today, only wish they would reopen the one they closed in San Jose. We'll be driving back up there to try some other items on their menu. Even tho' some reviews on here say this place is 50's style, it's not outdated, it's just kind of like being in a German pub. There are no restaurants around here that would compare.
google avatar

Kathy P.

Yelp
This place has been a family staple for us for generations. We love coming for celebrations or for just a quick easy good meal. What do I recommend to eat there? Anything! It is all good! Even on a busy evening there is always room at Harry's!

Yelp
From the name alone, "Harry's Hofbrau" you'd think this place was some sort of german style establishment... but the truth is, aside from the interior decor, that is essentially where the german-esque feel starts and stops. My boyfriend and his dad truly love this place... they frequent it often... and as die-hard carnivores, I can understand why... (there's a fairly large meat carving station at their disposal) but, for me... it's like traveling back in time to an old-school cafeteria where the lunch-staff asks you what you want and they get irritated if you haven't decided by the time it is your turn to order. I will say this... the food is very bountiful and there is definitely a variety of offerings.... but... there is no mandatory call to action... that is to say, you won't find me touting, "YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS." The food is decent as is the price and the vibe is pretty chill.

Yelp
I love Harry, the food is always amazing. I had the Tri tip and it certainly was juicy and tender. I warmed it up the next day, still tender. Great place to buy holiday dinners for the family. Harry is a landmark in Redwood City.

Yelp
Damn good eating cafeteria style. I come here to get my turkey leg fix. Food is available to you super quick, but the lines are even quicker. So be ready, and diligent in knowing what you want to order as to not hold up the line.

Yelp
Is it just me, or does this place have the absolute best pecan pie ever? Not sure if it's a combination of sweet potato and pumpkin or what it is but something about the taste, texture etc just rocks my world... Also really enjoyed the turkey dinner here!

Yelp
Went to Harry's Hofbrau last night with my in-laws on recommendation of a colleague and I can't believe I hadn't been there before! I got the tri tip dinner, which was a special - it came with mashed potatoes and another side: I chose macaroni and cheese. They also had DELICIOUS cherry pie that I took home to enjoy. My one complaint is we had a person in our party who was gluten free (cross contamination ok), and when I asked the people at the counter if anything was gluten free they said no, but then when we asked if there was anything without wheat they looked confused? We ended up going with what appeared to be gluten free but it was weird that these people seemed to have never heard the word gluten before. My husband and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Food was great and the service was friendly and welcoming. Like a time capsule from the 70's for cafeteria food. Definitely loved the ambiance and atmosphere. If you go during the week days for lunch, you'll run into the retiree/senior crowd. They're very friendly. Please be patient if you do come at these hours as the crowd is slow and not rushed or should be. Be attentive when driving in the parking lot.

Yelp
When in California, a delicious French Dip Sandwich is a must, and what better spot than Harry's Hofbrau. From the moment you walk in, your mind takes you down memory lane. It's a classic old school vibe. Getting in line, looping through the velvet ropes. Ordering my French Dip, watching them carve my roast beef. Extra a jus please!! The staff is wonderfully gracious always available to help carry your tray to your table or booth. One sandwich, two sides just at $20 bucks. Austin Yelp Elite Approved!!!

Yelp
If you like hofbrau's Harry's is worth it! Staff is friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. There's separate bar with sports usually playing! Good mixed drinks and decent selection of tap and bottled beers. I recommend this place if you're looking for simple feel good food...

Yelp
I visited on a weekend specifically to try their prime rib deal, since it's only available then. I went with the prime rib sandwich on a Dutch crunch roll, paired with a side of mashed potatoes. Right away, I noticed that the Dutch crunch roll wasn't toasted, which was a letdown. On top of that, the sandwich came plain with no toppings, I had to ask for lettuce, tomato, and peppers on the side. Unfortunately, the sandwich itself was dry and lacked flavor, making it hard to enjoy. However, the staff was super friendly, and the mashed potatoes were solid. The overall vibe felt like an old-school diner you'd find in Reno, but unfortunately, the food didn't leave a strong enough impression for me to want to return.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I've been a child and this place has kept the same warm and comforting environment the whole time, it always feels like the holidays when coming in here. For some of the items you eat here you might find yourself reaching for the salt and pepper at the table, but it makes sense from a place where seniors come for food for their dietary restrictions and whatnot, so I do not mind having to put a little and salt and pepper myself for the experience to be great for the senior patrons that come here. This place has been here for a very long time and I hope that it stays around for many more years to come. This place deserves a 4 star rating if we are talking about restaurants like this, obviously not the best food you are ever going to have but this place is amazing and well worth the price for the portions and how good and comforting it is And a tip for anyone coming here for the first time, look at the menu while in line or know what you want before you go into line because sometimes there's a huge rush and line of people and it can be a little overwhelming if you are trying to decide the moment you are up to order so you can have a less stressful experience when ordering.

Yelp
I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices. I finally settled on the roast turkey since I was in the mood for copious. amounts of gravy. The turkey breast was generally moist but my first couple bites were a bit dry. The mash potatoes and gravy were on point. I was disappointed by the dressing (stuffing). There was a specific flavor I wasn't a fan of. I feel crazy for saying this, but it was almost metallic. I tried a bit of the pastrami which was excellent. I enjoyed the food overall and love these type of legacy establishments. Next I want to get the pastrami as a sandwich and try their cakes.

Yelp
I come here often for work meetings and all the food here is really good. The staff is very friendly and they work hard to get through very busy and long lines. Parking is generally pretty easy to find and they have a good selection of beers on tap! Definitely give them a try when in the area.

Yelp
Harry's is the best. Great beer selection. Bus boys are great. Sandwiches are some of the best. I usually get the Santa Maria Tri Tip with au jus on the side with pepper jack. Incredible. Mike, the GM, is great as all the bartenders.

Yelp
It was a cold winter day and I was once again craving beef/steak. I've never actually eaten at Harry's Hofbrau, but decided today was the day! In addition to my craving of beef, we really wanted comfort food. We ordered the roast beef, turkey with gravy and stuffing, and those meals came with 2 sides each. We both got mashed potatoes, but of course had to try their Mac n cheese and to keep me feeling a bit less guilty, I got a Caesar salad. Beef was pretty good, not sure it sufficed my steak craving, but still good! Turkey was yummy and it felt like having a second thanksgiving! Definitely get the stuffing and gravy to complete it. Mashed potatoes came with 2 different gravies, but I think I preferred the turkey gravy more. Mac and cheese was decent and the Caesar salad tasted like it came from a bag. Will skip the Caesar next time. Service was quick and decent. It was lively and cozy inside, it felt like we were in a ski lodge! We plan to try the pies next time :) Total: $48 Tip: Menu was a bit confusing at first, take a moment to read about all their offerings. Get the stuffing with the turkey!

Yelp
Bay Area classic, one of the best dinners possible. I love Harry's Hofbrau. The turkey dinner or open faced sandwich smothered in gravy is amazing
