My first vegetarian omakase! Chef and team were so thoughtful in creating a vegetarian experience using local Kyoto ingredients. It was delicious and unique. Thank you chef!

This was a highlight of our trip to Japan. Amazing value for money in a welcoming and authentic environment. The courses are all delicious - especially the soy bean starter - WOW! I would recommend making a reservation in advance - it was full when we went.

While the food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as good as other high-end izakayas in Kyoto. Had the ~10,000 yen set with tablecheck online reservation, which I noticed was different from set/a la carte ordered by locals. The fish in first dish was overcooked. Sashimi were very good. Soumen’s dashi wasn’t any special to warrant its simplicity. Fried items were just OK the flavors of the duck meat ball didn’t really come through and the combination of sweet potato and shrimp in the tempura did not give any surprises. Beef bowl rice was well cooked but I expect a little better with the price and the strong competition in Kyoto. Might have a better experience ordering à la carte, which they seem to allow with the online booking

A perfect omakase (set menu), cooked with great craft and skill. Everyone sits at the bar and enjoys the theatre of the kitchen team. We thoroughly enjoyed our two hours, and experienced an array of lovely umami infused dishes. (Total venue seating capacity is 11).

Similar experience to another reviewer. Pretty disappointing. Food was good but not exceptional. We ordered the only omakase on the menu but received a very different set of food than others in the restaurant it seemed like a difference of locals vs foreigners. We’d expected to at least be served the same food for presumably the same omakase.

First meal in Kyoto 💓 lovely restaurant. We had the ¥9990 set because we don’t speak Japanese (reservation made by hotel). We enjoyed every course!! Will definitely come back again!!

A little disappointing, the food is good but not exceptional and if you are a foreigner you are only given a specific « tourist omakase » while the Japanese have other menus, and there are not that many plates compared to other omakase, feels like there wasn’t enough (and no dessert). Still food was nice but it didn’t meet our expectations.

Lovely omakase meal tonight booked through table check. Not sure why people are complaining the food seems better a la carte. We had a great meal. The wine was disappointing though. No choice except one by the glass which had clearly been open a while and the pours were tiny so we had to switch to beer. But that was the only small disappointment

**CASH ONLY** Made a reservation for dinner a day ahead. Not sure how to choose a la carte here (maybe call ahead) but we reserved online and I believe you can only do omakase if you reserve that way. Some people at our seating did a la carte though, so it's definitely possible. Highlights included the tuna sashimi, potato salad, mackerel sushi and wagyu. Overall it was a fantastic intimate counter experience and you get sooo much food - I think our meal was 12 courses - so I would actually opt for a la carte if possible!

A stunning 10 course omakase on a back street of Kyoto. Kicked off with a refreshing potato salad and pork-stuffed bun, then on to fried duck meatball with chutney, a glorious selection of sashimi with fresh wasabi, playful and delicious corn tempura, mackerel sushi roll, eggplant and hamo soup, and a bowl of sautéed wagyu beef. Drinks were tasty, staff was attentive and solicitous, and half the fun was watching everything the chefs were doing up close. An unforgettable evening with Chef Kikkawa-san. Sono tabemono wa oishidesu!

If you didn't know where you were going, you would walk right past this place. At night, there is no distinguishing signage, except for this unlit, nondescript plaque on the door. Inside is 12 counter seats surrounding an open kitchen. Specials are written on a blackboard. The set menu is JPY6,000/person + a promise to order a drink. Very good quality ingredients and technique. A wide range of flavors, textures, and tastes featuring fish, liver (fish and chicken), shellfish, and marbled wagyu. Service is warm and cozy, and they offer a range of Japanese sakes. I'd visit again.
