Haru Sushi

"Owner-chef Menandro Rodrigues’ passion for Japanese cuisine provides the impetus for everything that goes on at this welcoming restaurant in Copacabana. On the ground floor, enjoy relaxed serviced at the pavement tables, while on the first floor you’ll find a dining room decorated in Japanese style with an impressive bar counter overlooking the kitchen, as well as tables and chairs laid out in different sections. The chef follows the Japanese “Kaisen” philosophy (which translates as “continuous improvement”) and devotes special attention to its techniques as well as to ingredients sourced directly from local fishermen. His cuisine is served as part of an Omakase menu, and includes options such as sushi, sashimi, and special and traditional “combos”. These are complemented by an extensive array of sakis that can be enjoyed in “tasting” measures." - Michelin Inspector

Amazing staff, atmosphere, and food! 10/10 experience. I 100% recommend this restaurant. My friend and I came here three times during our vacation before having to travel back to our country; otherwise, I have no doubt we'd eat here at least once a week for the rest of our lives! Lol! We also sat in the bar area, where we were able to socialize with the chefs and bartenders and see them in their element. I suggest making a reservation to avoid waiting. Can't wait to go back one day. WE LOVE YOU, HARU!

This Japanese restaurant is fantastic — we were absolutely impressed! We ordered the shrimp spring rolls, tuna rolls, noodles, and soup — everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. The cocktails were also amazing — perfectly balanced, flavorful, and creative. We highly recommend booking a table in advance, as the restaurant is in high demand — and for good reason. It’s a great spot for dinner with friends or a cozy evening for two. Highly recommended!

After a high-octane show from the British act Bush while on tour in Brazil, my group found themselves rather peckish most places of grand prestige where already closing up shop for the evening. However we say that the mighty Haru, still had sometime on the clock. We rushed to the entrance and spoke to a super polite hostess. Obs: the service was impeccable. Specially for our waitress Ruth. ( Do request her table section if you want amazing service). Don't be put off by the vibrant colours, the dining room gives you that homely wooden vibe. ( The omakase room is very pretty also). Other than the service and hospitality for me a clean toilet is always vital for a great restaurant. Do recommend.

Probably the best meal I’ve had in my life. Sushi was incredible, service was amazing and we were sat right by the bar and were in awe at watching the chefs work - not noisy, everyone working in perfect harmony and just beautiful to watch. Old fashioneds were really good, and the price for the meal was hard to believe. From Scotland and back home we would be paying probably £200 for the two of us for this meal, but it cost the equivalent of £70. Could not recommend a place any higher, only in Rio for a week and will be back at least once more.

Had a fantastic lunch at Haru. Leo the bartender was attentive, and recommended some delicious cocktails based on my tastes. I had the Omakase, the sushi was perfectly fresh and tasted incredible. My favorites were the thick and tender slices of nigiri - especially the tuna belly. Highly recommend.

The first time I visited I had a Filadelphia roll, tuna with black truffle sushi, and the Shitake appetizer and everything was delicious. The downside was that the waiter was hard to find. I enjoyed the meal so much I returned a few days later. This time the waiter was nonexistent. After 20 minutes of sitting at the counter without ever seeing a waiter I found a manager and asked if he could send the waiter over so that I could order. He said "ok" and walked away. After 10 more minutes of waiting I left. 30 minutes without any interaction with a waiter is unacceptable. As I was leaving I saw a waiter taking the order of the guy next to me who had just sat down. Unacceptable. While the food was excellent, the service was so terrible that I can't provide a high rating.

We ordered the white fish ceviche, an ahi appetizer with egg (can’t remember name but this was our favorite!), sea urchin and the recommended combination that was 19 pieces of sashimi and nigiri. The scallops with clarified butter and sea salt were like clouds melting in our mouth 🤩 Food was very fresh and presentation was very well done, however, flavor and “wow” factor was not there. Be sure to make a reservation because it fills up fast- we had one and still waited over an hour on a weeknight. This could very well be because we had very high expectations eating at a Michelin star. Honestly, we’ve had far better sashimi, sushi, and ceviche at home and numerous other restaurants in Rio. Still a very unique experience to eat at a Michelin star- the atmosphere is very classy and service is wonderful. Overall a great experience; but not worth the high price in our opinion.

What an amazing experience! First off, let me preface by mentioning that we showed up in flippers and bathing suits as we were taking a swim at Copacabana right before and had to catch a flight right after. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, even though we clearly didn't match the excellent ambiance. The food was simply stunning, nothing was short of perfect but for me the highlight was the bluefish tuna which I can't even begin to describe. 10/10. To top it off, the prices are very reasonable, dare I say even a bit cheap for what you get. I can't wait to come back to Rio so as to spend more time and try more dishes in this amazing restaurant!

Yelp
It's casual and small - I sat on the street by the small bar and kinda in the main traffic way. The layout is interesting like it is coupled together - a half floor up is the indoor seating, second floor is a teppanyaki and the bathroom.....a bit strange to barge in on the teppanyaki dinner happening to go to the bathroom. As far as the reason to go - the sushi - I can't speak for there being better sushi in Copacabana, it was OK, but there are better places in Gavea, Leblon, and Ipanema that are not as convenient as this location but not inconvenient. As others have noted, the service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
I am always in the mood for sushi and found this place through Google Maps. It's a casual environment. I saw that they had some seats inside but I wanted to people watch outside so we sat in their small fenced-in area. If you're not a fan of eating roadside, the inside area is better for you. Service was attentive, and prompt. What really takes the cake here though is the sushi for sure. I ordered the combinado mix especial - I was pleasantly surprised with the quantity and quality of the sushi. For R$98 (around $23 USD), it's a reasonable price. I would come back here on a future visit!

Yelp
I very impressed with everything we got. Me & my boyfriend love sushi & have gone to many sushi places back at home in California, but this sushi was the best we've ever had. Came to Brazil for a week & came back to this place twice already! The fish taste very fresh & is prepared very delicately, the gyozas are filled up nicely. I would definitely recommend this place, from appetizers to dessert 10/10. Hopefully we get to come back again.

Yelp
Definitely recommend. Reliably good food. Ambiance: Nice enough outside but a little crowded inside. Not a huge number of tables so it probably gets full often. Service: Friendly and attentive. Food: I went twice and tried a number of different choices and all were very good. From rolls to sashimi to combos it was all delicious. Price: Very reasonable, especially compared to a comparable quality restaurants in other countries. I don't usually visit places twice when having a limited time touring a city but this one was so good that I couldn't resist. And it's definitely a good break from steakhouses.

Yelp
Glad I took my friends suggestion and ate here. The sushi was fresh and the dining experience was great. My girlfriend is Japanese and thought the taste was on par with what she is familiar with back in Tokyo. We will definitely come again on our next visit

Yelp
Brazil is known for amazing BBQ, but after a whole week dining on meat meat meat and more meat, I was dying for some fish! So glad to find this little gem just around the corner from my hotel. No English (or Japanese) menu, so unfortunately I did not find any of the professionally photographed dishes that were in these Yelp photos... but ordered the salmon combination and yaki soba, both were fresh and delicious.

Yelp
Hole in the wall with only a few tables, casual enough to walk in wearing flip flops and beach gear. Not all that veg friendly but they do offer a few vegetarian apps and rolls, like mushrooms, spring rolls and two veggie maki rolls. No salad or tofu. Ended up getting a mango California roll, where they replaced the usual avocado with mango. It was light and refreshing. The roll and bottled water ran about $9 after service charges. Can't beat that.

Yelp
Amazing sushi restaurant with a Brazilian twist. This is a small restaurant and most seating is outdoors. The sushi is vey fresh and tasty.
