The staff at Haru were very hospitable. Carlos, our server, was very kind and made our experience at Haru one to remember, striking us with great conversations and the best attitude. I wouldn’t go for sushi anywhere else. Thank you Carlos and the entire staff for your warmth!

Just stopped in with the family for a quick bite, We had some soup edamame. Philly roll and rainbow roll. This is under the new ownership and I definitely recommend. All delicious… stop in and give it a try!

We have eaten here several times. The food & service is excellent! We had the Avocado Heart, Mexican Roll, & Green Tea Mango combo for dessert:) YUMMM!

New local ramen spot is pretty darn good! Awesome service, super clean and friendly. Everting is reasonably priced for La Jolla. You can basically make your own ramen also.... I told em I really wanted a spicy miso with the black garlic and they said no problem!

Google
I truly don’t know where these reviews came from but if you have taste buds or have ever had good Japanese food before, don’t come here. 1. The ramen tastes like chicken noodle soup and they don’t season their eggs. 2. The dishes are tailored more for the eye than anything. 3. Half the menu wasn’t available 4. They were out of pork for their ramen and still requested full price for the dish.

My husband and I have come here consistently for years. It is one of our favorite sushi spots in San Diego— the food is fresh, consistent and tasty. The service is attentive and friendly. Rose is often our waitress, she’s wonderful and it’s always great to see a familiar face. Highly recommend!

We drove to this restaurant from Pacific Beach on a saturday since it had good reviews. We arrived at 8:05pm excited and hungry. The hostess told us that the kitchen closed at 8pm, we said but your hours are until 9pm, they said sorry so we left disgusted. Drove back home to Orange County and will never get a chance to eat at this restaurant again. So, I am not able to recommend this Sushi Restaurant.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I come here every couple of weeks to satisfy my sushi cravings. My husband and I have been coming here since the day Haru had opened and we absolutely love the food! The chef is also the owner (alongside with his wife who works in the kitchen) and I think that's why the food is always fresh and high quality. I always get lots of nigiri and sashimi for myself, while my husband loves ramen here. Fish and seafood are always fresh, perfectly cut and the portions are generous. I absolutely recommend this place if you're looking for high quality nigiri and sashimi. Most of the times they also have uni which is so delightful. The place usually is not too busy and not noisy at all, so if you prefer a quieter set up, this is perfect P.S. Rose is our favorite server, she is always so nice and friendly

Yelp
Have been in town for 4 days, on a personal trip & today the trip turns to business. We decided we wanted something on the lighter side & chose a sushi restaurant. Haru, no relation to the Haru in NY, was quite the find! We started with edamame (perfectly salted & hot) along with Soft shell crab: Have had this before at other places, and it has a tendency to be soggy, but this was incredible. Light & crispy, not oily at all. Super tasty Sushi Sampler: yellowtail, salmon & tuna which all tasted like it was straight off the boat! Toro was absolutely TO DIE FOR! So fresh & buttery, it melted in my mouth! Uni was perfect! Creamy & super fresh Spicy scallop hand roll was also incredibly fresh - the only complaint is that I wish the seaweed was a little crispier. The flavor of the fish was incredible, just need a little more crunch Scallop sushi was fresh & perfectly briny. Eel was cooked perfectly. Not chewy, but tender & was the perfect temperature. The last thing to come out was the Haru Protein Roll.....what a PERFECT ending to the meal! Again, the fish was incredible (salmon, tuna & yellowtail) along with avocado & surrounded by fresh, crispy cucumber! It literally was like a palette cleanser. The service was spot on, we never had to ask for refills or extra wasabi, our server was on top of it! The restaurant is clean, the bathrooms were spotless! Try the hibiscus tea too, guessing this is house made too. We didn't have it in us to order dessert, we were stuffed, but I can't wait to come back

Yelp
Great local option for small family dinner. Incredible staff and delicious choices. Not receptive to large groups or young children who don't respect traditional Japanese calmness.

Yelp
Exceptional service & sushi. Quiet and wonderful staff. One of the best in the area

Yelp
Well the food was good and our waitress was super nice but the owner ruined the experience. We will not be back and it makes sense why this place was completely empty on Saturday night! The owner came up to our table after we paid and were wrapping and literally told us we didn't tip enough!! WOW! Very awkward and she told us to properly tip. Okay... makes sense why nobody is in here!! Who does that! You really think that's going to keep customers? I felt bad for the worker because she brought the waiter over and was like was their service bad? Is that why you didn't tip good? Never come here. It's empty for a reason terrible owner. How are you empty in downtown La Jolla on Saturday night in the summer? Oh the owner explains it all!

Yelp
Fantastic sushi & ramen spot in the heart of La Jolla. Discovered them on Yelp! Super easy to make reservations when we arrived they had our table ready with our names on a cute card in the table. Awesome menu and creative and fun sushi rolls to choose from as well as a wide variety of ramen. Prices are reasonable and food quality and presentation were fabulous. Edible flowers and seashells on some of the colorful plates. Plenty of parking out front. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
This place is epic and top quality sushi & Ramen. Great service & just the best in town

Yelp
Solid sushi and Japanese food restaurant. They have some interesting rolls, very fresh fish, and not too salty hot Japanese dishes such as Ramen, teriyaki meats and veggies. To make the experience even better was the friendly and attentive service, plate clearing to make room for those other dishes we ordered, and a nice selection of cold Sakes. Wish they had more of a beer selection, but they had the standby Japanese beers. We happen to be in this neck of the woods for the LaJolla Art and Wine festival, so when we find ourselves in the neighborhood again we will return. It's not that we mind driving, but everything in downtown LaJolla is a bit of a pain to drive to because there's one road in and out of these isolated part of San Diego. Don't miss this great sushi bar if you find yourself in LaJolla!

Yelp
We used to come here quite often because the food was good. Unfortunately the food doesn't make up for the awful service here. The owners are rude and aggressive, with the clients, with staff, yelling at children. This place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Horrible.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing place. Food is beyond delicious. We had the cucumber salad and fried rice as starters . Taste sensations for both. Sushi rolls were divine! Definitely recommend the flight of sake. Really really good. The beautiful La Jolla ocean view and amazing service made for a great date night!!

Yelp
Fresh fish, friendly staff. Lots of comfy booths or seats indoors. Been here multiple times and it never disappoints - they have options ranging from ramen to omakase. The garlic edamame and agadashi tofu are awesome appetizers. Everything is flavorful and the food comes out in good time, there's a sushi chef in the back making it for when you order. Every time we go 'which sushi place should we go to?' and consider a new one, we just circle back to Haru because we know we're going to get a quality sushi dinner.

Yelp
Excellent sushi! Totally hit the spot. Super friendly service. Better than anything we had in PB.

Yelp
Cute little spot! I went at 5pm and it was empty! The sushi tasted fresh and was brought out right away. The server was friendly! The only reason I docked 1 star is because the food didn't "wow" me. It was good but not great or worth the price tag. I'd only go again if I wasn't craving sushi lol

Yelp
This new sushi spot is a little off the main path in the village of La Jolla. It is on Girard Ave south of Pearl St, whereas most businesses are farther north in the area. A benefit of their location is that nearby curbside parking is a little easier to find. You could even park in the plaza lot where VONS is located and walk a block over. The inside of the restaurant was clean and modern with the sushi bar near the kitchen in the back. I sat at a booth and looked at their menu sheets which had no pictures (a pet peeve of mine) and only descriptions. There was a lengthy list of maki rolls, regular and specialty, that dominated an entire page. I decided to order some madai nigiri (2 pcs) to start my meal. It was reasonably sized and fresh for $6. I followed up by selecting three different rolls... Energy, Firecracker, and Pink. The first was a combination of yellow tail, eel, gobo, avocado, cucumber, sprouts, and masago. The second consisted of spicy tuna with scallions on top and spicy scallops. The third was made up of salmon on top, spicy salmon, soy paper and dynamite sauce. Perhaps because it had the mildest flavoring of the bunch, I did like the Pink roll the best. The prices for the sushi looked reasonable, but I did notice the cost for ramen was on the high side even though I never saw the bowl size for the noodles. The service was provided by two waitresses who were pleasant and polite. It's unfortunate that another reviewer had issues with the temperament of a staff member. I certainly did not encounter that during my dinner experience which I gave between 3.5 and 4 stars.

Yelp
Excellent tempura and sushi at a reasonable price. Lots of little touches that elevate the meal. Service is also very friendly.

Yelp
I've now had 2 excellent dinners of sushi and ramen at this relatively new restaurant. On Girard, south of Pearl in a non-crowded part of LJ. Street parking typically available. Friendly service in a family restaurant. Excellent sushi selection and quality. Ramen is very good. Beer, wine, and sake available. Prices are reasonable. Minimalist decor. Noise level is low. Enjoyable experience and highly recommended by THE doctor ( Notorious MD).

Zan M.

Yelp
My wife and I used to go to this spot almost weekly before we moved and we love it. Great food, very nice staff - we'll be back every time we visit.

Yelp
Ate in once with family and did a very large to go order for house get together. Very impressed with the sushi quality, flavor, selection. Highly recommend. Also I think the prices are very appropriate. All around 5 stars based on the above. It's a casual atmosphere but very pleasant. Also the sushi bar is aesthetically pleasing.

Yelp
This place is such a La Jolla gem! My go to order is getting the salmon sashimi, seaweed salad, and the Haru protein roll. All so delicious and FRESH. Have never had a bad experience here and now that they remodeled the inside, it makes this place 20 thousand more times amazing. Love this place!

Yelp
Enjoyed a light meal for dinner. We didn't want to eat anything super heavy and everything we ordered was amazing. Their prices are decent and they have excellent customer service. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The weirdest experience I have ever had! We literally USED to come here all the time until they told me children aren't welcome. It sounds weird even writing this ... the owners actually stopped me as I was walking to the bathroom and told me this is not a place for kids! Meanwhile I was with a friend's child who's an angel (believe me, he is, mine would have ruined that place). So obviously I was not ok with that comment and he told me "we have cameras , I'll show you him screaming ". The kid hadn't made a sound all dinner, only smiled and played. Let's just say we won't be back and I didn't know bringing a child to a restaurant was not acceptable either! I'm sad we won't be going back, those owners need to retire. In fact, I hope they're forced into retirement because everyone will stop supporting their horrible nature and thoughts towards children. Disappointing behavior from disgusting people.

Yelp
First time visit. Very clean, cozy restaurant. Enjoyed great service with a window table. Our appetizers were just delicious, the flavors of fresh ingredients popped! We both enjoyed our meals. I tried ramen for the first time and can't wait to come back and explore the menu. . Try it

Yelp
They should have a sign that says if your not going to tip 15% don't dine in! I went to dine in with a friend and after apparently the tip we gave was not enough the lady that was there came back and asked us if the service was not good and wanted to know why the tip wasn't good! I was in such a disbelief that she really asked us that and told us the the owner says if we're not going to be tipping the correct amount that we should be doing take out only !!! I know some of us live off of tips but even if there was no tip they should never go back to the guest and ask why so little! She stood there stand looking at us until we added more. We are never coming back here AGAIN
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
This place has the worst customer service! I came there with my family of seven and was turned away because apparently they can only accept a party of six. They claim short staff, which is understandable in these times. But, we even agreed to having separate tables and was still declined business. What happens if a party of three comes in and another party of four comes in? Are they going to turn these people away? Why do you open a business and turn away customers like this? The entire ordeal did not make any sense. The people here are just so vain that they think their comfort level in preparing food is more important than their customers. Never coming here again and I will be passing this on to the entire UCSD friends.

Yelp
Our new "go to" sushi spot in La Jolla! Was introduced to this place a couple of months ago by some local friends, and OMG, I am now hooked. Everything is delicious, from the garlic edamame to the generous pieces of nigiri. The sushi tastes fresh and the service is always on top of everything. This is also where I had the most incredible soft shell crab appetizer in my life. Do try, it's a must. I've been a sushi snob for years now, so I know good sushi when I try. Please, do yourself a favor and head over to Haru!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been here so many times... it's a hidden (not yet over-priced) gem in the Village. Sssshhhh... don't tell everyone... I don't want to have to deal with a line as long as The Taco Stand down the street, or as long as Nishiki Ramen... or as long as Izakaya Masa.. you get my drift. Come here, chill, enjoy the service and food. I've ordered all their sushi... they're all so good. My favorite one is the pink roll but with nori instead of rice paper. Their sexy roll is sexy and tasty, although it can be a good hot mess. Their rainbow roll is classically good. What else can I say...this place has good sushi/rolls. Don't leave without getting their Shrimp Yakisoba... ohmyeffinggod... it's good. Don't bring your peeps... let's keep this place a secret... ssshhh...

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner at Haru and will definitely be back. As self proclaimed sushi connoisseurs, I cannot believe we hadn't been here before! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The sushi was fresh and reasonably priced. It was an excellent experience.

Yelp
I came for the ramen. I go to ramen after ramen after ramen restaurants almost everyday. Unfortunately the ramen was not my favorite. I've come to realize ramen shouldn't be clear...at least not the ramen I've been eating. Also, I asked for the ramen with black garlic oil and I could see there may have been some around the edges of my bowl, but that's it. I always get extra. The broth was just ok. I've always gotten pork broth but they had chicken broth. I wouldn't go back for that ramen. The pork was so tough I couldn't cut it and didn't have one bite of it. It looked tough and it was. Had the salmon sashimi and it was delish. Service was good, too, but the ramen wasn't.

Jen B.

Yelp
Haru is one of my go to sushi restaurants in La Jolla. The fish is always fresh and delicious. We started with miso soup and then got Bluefin sashimi, Philadelphia roll, whitesnow roll, and toro with wasabi.

Yelp
So, chilling in the village, Ota closes at 2, it was 1:45 & I decided to try this place out. Located S on girard past pannikan. Only a few people here, went to the sushi bar & was net by friendly sushi Chef. Waitress/hostess was nice too. Pretty simple order of yellowtail and salmon sashimi. Comes with 5 pc but I had eaten a slice of each prior to remembering to take a pic. The Yellowtail was amazing & I give the salmon a "eh" I have had better, but by no fault of theirs. Look at my pics before you judge them too harshly, I am a salmon sashimi addict. So my tasyes in Salmon may be a little skewed. Prices were on the high end. 33 bucks for ten pieces. It is what it is, rent is high here. ‍ Very good, limited in what I can say bc my order was so simple. But I will definitely come again to eat a rill or two.

Yelp
WARNING: THIS BUSINESS IS NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY. We sat down for an early dinner at 5:30pm (at this point only two other tables were taken) and within 10 minutes of being seated we were unceremoniously told to leave because our 1.5 year old daughter was babbling and "would disturb our elder customers who have reservations later tonight." Huh?? The baby was not crying or acting out, she was babbling her excited-baby talk. The kid loves to eat and she knew food was coming! We come from the hospitality business and we know firsthand the challenges of making everyone in your restaurant comfortable. It's not an easy job and we respect our peers in the industry, but must you really treat a young family with a babbling child the same way you would tell a vagrant to stop peeing in your planter boxes? I don't care how good the food may be- the sheer lack of hospitality here is an absolute killer.
google avatar

Henry M.

Yelp
One of our favorite spots, not broadly known which we like, and great quality food and service. The kind of place they know your name with superb Japanese food!
google avatar

Jeannine E.

Yelp
We have eaten here several times. The food & service is excellent! We had the Avocado Heart, Mexican Roll, & Green Tea Mango combo for dessert:) YUMMM!

Greg G.

Yelp
Food is good, not great. This is the tale of two sorta restaurants. Tale one, no kids. Curt service, solid chalkboard specials. Tale two, family dinner. Hostile staff & sushi chef to my family during three different occasions. Yep, I'm glutton for punishment. My goal, trying to support local business. Team Haru motto should be - no families allowed. I'm still shocked by their behavior. They should change the name of the resturant to HOSTILE. Skip this joint.

Denise T.

Yelp
We were forced to eat our food really fast and were kicked out before being blue to finish our drinks. We arrived at 8:00, ordered food and as our food was being placed on the table we were told "by the way, we close at 9", in a way that implied, you better eat fast because I want to go home. From that moment on we felt like we were being rushed through the meal. They brought out the check before we were finished eating and seconds later came back and said "can you please pay." We paid but we were still finishing our drinks. At 9:00, before we could finish the drinks, the manager came up to our table and asked us to leave. It was such an uncomfortable experience to feel the entire waitstaff glaring at you waiting for us to leave before the place was closed and then to be actually kicked out before you could finish what you ordered.

Yelp
This is quite possibly my favorite sushi place in all of San Diego/ La Jolla! The service was amazing, and the food was exceptional. I also really enjoyed their modern ambiance. I was seriously blown away by the freshness of the fish!! 100% going to return!!!

Mariateresa G.

Yelp
We love Haru Sushi! We have been loyal to this little La Jolla gem throughout the pandemic and we are very happy to see that he restaurant is now thriving! Haru Sushi is family owned and operated. The ambience is not pretentious and the menu choices are great! We are still ordering pick-up every week but we are planning to dine in again soon.

Lori L.

Yelp
It's sad when a frequently visited neighborhood "family" restaurant decides to ruin your meal by saying they do not like children in their restaurant. It was early on a Friday evening, there was a young couple dining and another family of 3 - and us 4 adults and my toddler who spent the entire meal sitting playing with his truck, eating his meal, not a peep (we were all impressed). My friend walked him back towards the bathroom and the owners began to say to her that they don't like screaming children in their restaurant, once again - he did not make a peep! This response was out of the blue, extremely rude and made NO SENSE! My entire family comes to HARU all the time and we will no longer be visiting this restaurant. Bare in mind we spent $20 on a ramen for our child and had a bill of over 250$ of food and drinks and they pretty much told us to leave, so we did. La Jolla is a family town, if you don't want children in your restaurant don't open up next door to an elementary school! Shame on you!

Carolyn M.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the waitresses were attentive. However, the experience was colored negatively by the woman, possibly the manager who ran out from the kitchen to shush us when we were laughing. I've never had that happen before and certainly cooled the great conversation and connection we were having. We won't be coming back again.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Very disappointed. The service was terrible and the sushi was just average. Now I understand why it was almost empty on a Friday night.

S V.

Yelp
Recently discovered Haru sushi and it was great!! The fish quality is excellent and fresh and the rolls are large. The staff is very kind and welcoming. Over all great experience all around. We're making this a weekly spot.

Jona G.

Yelp
We ordered take out for my daughters birthday. They told us it would be an hour. Came to pick up and made my husband wait for another 30 minutes. They seem understaffed but when we called they should have told us it will be 90 minutes wait for a few rolls. Expensive also. Won't be going here again. Sushi was tasty though.

Lacey Y.

Yelp
Hands down some of the best custom server I have ever experienced. The food was great too

Paul K.

Yelp
Inept. Atrocious service. Unapologetically slow. Need a manager (or an owner) with a business sense, badly. The other diners are looking at one another laughing and puzzled by how poorly the evening dinner service is tonight. Shameful. The customer is never right type of place.
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
BEST sushi spot in La Jolla for quick service and a more personal night out! The servers are friendly and attentive, the sushi and all other food options are amazing, the restaurant is extremely clean, and the kitchen is very quick! It is never too crowded and they always put out the best quality food! My boyfriend and I found this spot about a year ago when we were trying to get sushi by La Jolla Cove but all of the restaurants by the cove smelled so badly like seals and had no parking so we left and found Haru just up the street on Girard! This is THE SPOT and guaranteed NO seal smell here!!! Easy street parking right in front. Also for those who are more mild sushi eaters or looking for cooked Japanese cuisine, they have so many other food options like ramen and yakisoba noodles, or teriyaki and hibachi. Not pictured, but their Beef Yakisoba is SO GOOD! Perfect balance in their menu and I will never go anywhere else for sushi in San Diego!

Joylene N.

Yelp
Good sushi. Friendly staff. Easy parking. Been there many times. I consider it is my neighborhood sushi place.
google avatar

Carolina T.

Yelp
The food is alright (average to mediocre) but the owner is super rude. My friend and I were there for lunch with our girls and before serving the food the owner came to our table to say that the seats were very hard to clean and that we needed to be careful while eating. She then went on to repeat herself twice more, in a very rude tone, that we had to be careful. Absolutely inappropriate to treat your customers like that. If kids are not welcome there (the restaurant is on the same block as two schools!) there should be a sign at the door, or she should have seats that she can clean instead of harassing her customers before their meal.

Alexander S.

Yelp
Haru sushi is by far the best sushi restaurant in town. Joon is a master chief and when you talk to him about his art, it is a real pleasure. Highly recommend!
