Officially one of my go to sushi spots in the area now. Why, you may ask?Because the Happy Hour menu here is a freakin steaaaal! If you're bougie on a budget like me, then this is your spot. Where else are you going to get full size, thick af sushi rolls for $10 nowadays? NO WHERE. HH is valid Tues-Sun, 2:30 to 5:30 PM. Closed Mondays!
Since the rolls were so cheap, I decided to order 4 of them lol. They had a special menu page rn so I had to give the sushi nachos ($17) a try, and because we wanted something a little diff to go with our sushi, we threw in some curry chicken ($22). All of this came out to $92.. before tip!
Curry chicken was alright. If I was feeling extra lazy and didn't want to make it myself, I'd eat this, but I wouldn't come back just for this. Instead of serving the katsu and rice on one side with the curry on the other half, they ladled the curry all over the chicken, with rice on the side. This makes for a pretty soggy chicken, and sloppy presentation. They add a little side salad and pickles on the side, which was a nice palate cleanser. The curry did have a few chunks of potato and carrot, so that was nice. I THINK this came with a side of miso soup, and additional side salad, because they brought one set for my group of 2.. and I don't think it would have been served with anything else we ordered.
Sushi nachos was a hard MISS. So much potential but didn't justify the price or hit the mark for me. They served fresh wonton chips around chopped scallops and hamachi but the flavor was just way too mayo heavy. It's a spicy mayo flavor but because they don't use real sriracha, this makes a difference too. I know this because I asked for a side of sriracha and trust me when I say ya girl knows the difference between Huy Fong and a knock off.
The chopped fish was a good sushi topper for my rolls though, and I did love the crunchiness of the fried wontons.
On to the good stuff! Happy hour rolls:
Dancing Spider- This one is pretty basic but executed well! Lots of avocado on top, with a soft shell crab inside. I like that this one had more green things (avo and cucumber) to balance the deep fried crab. They drizzled a little unagi sauce on top which I thought blended things together without being overly sauce heavy.
Fantasy - I think this one was my fav of the night. I don't usually love cream cheese in my sushi but because this one is deep fried, the cream cheese gets a little melty and offers the roll a sweet creaminess that balances the spicy tuna. They say this one is spicy but i think even our mild friends can hang with this one. The roll is cut into massive slices so you might need to unhinge your jaw for this one. They were generous with the masago topping too which I love!
Alamo - My 2nd fav of the night! There is something about torched salmon that is just chef's kiss! I love the smokiness. The roll was stuffed generously with fish inside and on top and cut into the perfect one bite size. This was slightly sweet from the torched spicy mayo and unagi sauce on top. If you like lion king rolls, this one is right up your alley!
Air Force - Deep fried roll, but they stuff this one with 3 fishies: tuna, salmon and hamachi. The inside of this one was so pretty I even had to show y'all the cross section, however flavor wise, it was okay. I felt like it really relied on the sauces for the flavor to come through and the contrast from the softness of the fish was a little weird against the warmth and crunchiness of the exterior. Pretty similar to the fantasy roll, but a little more emphasis on the raw fish.
If you check my pics, you can see these rolls were well worth the money. You get so much bang for your buck! They have bento box specials, ramen (during HH), and lots of other sushi rolls to choose from their main menu but I think I'll make a special point to visit during HH for the best deal! We ordered so much food but we finished all of it except the curry lol The waiter was impressed and said we did way more damage than he thought we would. What can I say, I came hungry!!
Located right between Happy Donuts and Jack in the Box drive through. Plenty of parking around, but inside is mid size. Service was good and our waters constantly refilled!
