"The Gantt Center has been around since 1974, presenting, preserving, and celebrating excellence in visual and literary arts, music, film, and more; but in this new building, designed by Philip Freelon, one of the designers of the Smithsonian National Museum for African American History and Culture, the museum is finally an appropriate anchor in the city's center. It has everything, from community programs to dance performances to theater, but most visitors are here to view the art, especially the nationally lauded John and Vivian Hewitt Collection of African-American Art, which includes works by Charlotte native Romare Bearden, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Elizabeth Catlett, and Jonathan Green." - Stephanie Burt

I was there to celebrate the "Chop Shop" exhibition opening, where my husband's, among many other talented artists, work was being featured. It's a beautiful building and a huge space, and I was honored to be a witness to such an occasion. Thank you again to all those people who made this happen.

If you ever need a cultural event, please visit this museum. They curate events ranging from art exhibits, fashion shows, and yoga classes to hip hop talks. The staff is super friendly and the space is absolutely gorgeous. This museum is apex to Charlotte. Love it here!

Google
Incredible! Phenomenal exhibits! Highly recommend! Don’t miss out! Also a good place to educate families! And an incredible gift shop!

Google
Nice clean museum with modern day art collection. The people were nice that helped us. Their instructions on were to start and go was very helpful. The art exhibits was ok. I was expecting a little more historical art to go with modern collection. It seem more politically driven style art of expression. You really have to have a taste for this style. It's not a historical art museum for African American culture......not even an expression more individual thought.

Mia Shaw

Google
A beautiful and very moving museum! Definitely recommend.

Travis Truong

Google
The museum had some exhibits about artwork made by African American artists that were eye-pleasing to look at. The size of the museum does not justify the cost since admission should've been cheaper or free.

Cody Graham

Google
Got to see a lot of beautiful pieces from many talented artists. Each one having a story to tell and the emotion that lingers in the details of each brushstroke and carefully places object. It was very touching going from piece to piece learning a little bit about their lives and experiences.

Michael Hodge

Google
Kids and I had a great time. I believe they switched up some of the exhibits so that is awesome is refreshing to see new artistry and paintings. Special thank you to the young lady at the front desk where you check in. Truly a blessing

Yelp
Had such an amazing time at the Art After Dark: Imitating Life. The vibe was so chill and was good to be around like mindedness people want to take all the culture in. Can't wait for that next one!!!! And even more!!!!

Yelp
Loved the 2024 Juneteenth celebration at the HBG Center. The performances by the youth, stunning artwork and community discussions was a perfect way to honor and celebrate our culture.

Yelp
**3.4** I feel I am being very generous with this extra star. I am reviewing (2) things Yoga on the Rooftop and the museum itself. Met up on the top floor, next to the rooftop, not on the actual roof. No explanations no real guidance on why we weren't outside on rooftop. Our instructor started right on time. No big introductions, just right into the flow. I will say the class is a little more of an immediate class because of how swiftly he would go. It was a good stretch though. Tried some new positions. I ended up enjoyed myself. However, I doubt I would return. After yoga, we went to check out the museum itself. Impressive building looks fairly new. Lots of space, not a lot of art to be seen. A huge lobby and a huge conference/theatre/projector room. Overall, I feel there is a lot of wasted space and we could add a few more pieces for others to see. Museum is located in a very nice area in uptown Charlotte. No street parking for a couple of blocks. There is a parking deck in the JW Marriott building across the street

Yelp
I found out about this museum through Groupon, so I decided it to visit because I like museums mainly art and history one of my favorites. I highly recommended to stop by, you won't regret it

Yelp
Attended a Black History on Canvas workshop this afternoon. Artist, Michelle "Bunny" Gregory led the class. We were asked to bring a pre-drawn canvas featuring powerful symbols that represent Black history, triumph, and peace. The assignment was to bring our own unique perspective to our interpretation of the importance of Black History Month. We were also asked to include an inspirational quote, from a prominent African American icon, that resonates with us. Some followed the rules. Many didn't; But I think we all still had fun. The event lasted two hours. Some had pre-drawn images. Others painted free style. Some painted from stencils. I didn't see many with an inspirational quote. When coming here, the parking deck is across the street from the center; not the one attached to the building. That was very confusing since there are 3 parking decks all within a single block. The instructor didn't give an introduction of herself or relay any information about her work. However she did have an assistant. For those that hadn't painted before, they didn't learn techniques about colors or shading because we didn't get tips; but we all had fun. I felt the event could have done more to created a vibrant experience. Even if it was just light music.

Yelp
The art museum is an impressive building. I was a bit surprised how little art was actually in it; three moderately sized rooms and the interjoining hallways were all that was open. There seemed to be ample conference space, but for a museum that charges for entry there wasn't a ton of actual museum. The collection varied wildly in my estimation. Some pieces grabbed the eyes, while others made me roll them. And yet, the notion of devoting a painting to the life experience of quitting one's job at a T-Mobile store seemed more trenchant as I thought about it, such an easily overlooked experience. It also reminded me that T-Mobile's nationwide network can fail to provide even a single bar virtually anywhere in that nation in my experience. Moving on, there were things that were compelling and unique to be worth looking at, but staying for a half hour would be a long visit based on me and the people around me.

Yelp
I recently attended a Zeta Phi Beta evening event at the HBG Center in Uptown Charlotte. This location was a great backdrop for a chill but dressy sneaker ball fundraiser. The different floors featured a wide variety of art, and the ambience was perfect.

Alexandra E.

Yelp
Small art center, $7 a person for military. Well organized, and clean. Lots of rotating artists on display but won't take you long to walk through. Great spot to see among the other museums downtown Charlotte.

John E.

Yelp
Learn all about Harvey B Gantt and wonderful African American Art History. This museum in downtown Charlotte features wonderful, colorful art exhibits of all types. Know your past, know your future. Check out the HBG museum.

Yelp
This is a must visit if you're local to the area or visiting. Love the set up of this venue and all the amazing events. I recently went for an "Art After Dark" event and it did not disappoint. I loved every room and exhibit. Support this location and spread the word. They hold space for black artists, celebrate diversity, and embrace the diaspora!

Greg L.

Yelp
I wish I was in Charlotte a little bit longer, but I had to make it my business to visit at least one museum and that museum happened to be "The Harvey B. Gantt Center For African American..." That's a mouthful. I was impressed by the museum space but I felt there was a lack of different exhibits, I believe at the time only three exhibits were available. This was a good thing for I was on a time crunch but I would love to see more Black artists represented in this space. Next time I visit, I'll take a uber down to this part of town and just walk the area. There are a plethora of places to visit and you will waste more time finding ample parking lol

Asha E.

Yelp
The Gantt Center is one of my favorite places in Charlotte. There is always an interesting exhibit or event to enjoy. I recommend visiting their website for the latest information about programs, prices, etc. Prices are always reasonable to me and they offer so many educational and leisure programs for free. You can find parking on the street nearby, or in plaza parking at the Duke, and there is also a Preferred Parking lot along Tryon street. Parking in the deck is the least expensive to me, it's $5 after hours during weekdays. Take advantage of that and go grab ice cream or food Uptown after you leave the Gantt. There is always something to learn and do at the Gantt. It makes me feel like I'm a part of the community and it's a great place to immerse yourself in Black art.

Shani S.

Yelp
Absolutely worth a visit! The exhibits were so creative and the lighting was wonderful. I love museums that pay extra attention to lighting. And they offer free tours for customers of a particular bank, which was a pleasant surprise! Even the gift shops has a few cute keep sakes reminiscent of the museum. Be sure to stop by the next time you're in Charlotte!

Yelp
I attended Art after Dark at the Harvey B. Gantt Center and it was a great experience! I enjoyed the fashion show even with a obstructed view. The gallery was AMAZING and I will most likely bring my children to view as well! The rooftop was a GREAT addition to my night and the music they played was the cherry on top! There was a party going on inside with more music and dancing. I will most certainly return for another Art after Dark event!

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Harvey B. Gantt Center yesterday! It's in a great location, right in the heart of uptown, and the building is striking and unique. The receptionist who checked us in at the museum shop on the first floor was warm and welcoming, and we were really impressed by the space as a whole - especially loved the natural light and striking wood floors. The exhibits were super interesting, and each one told a unique story through mixed mediums. Our favorite was the photography one, "Reflections of a People" by Jamel Shabazz. We will definitely be returning soon and would highly recommend this museum to anyone, Charlotteans and visitors alike!

Sloan M.

Yelp
If you are looking for a place to learn and have a visual joy..this is the place for you. I encourage anyone to please take your children to the exhibits especially the one they have on the accomplishments of black men. This museum has never disappointed me.

Ava B.

Yelp
Any place that highlights and presents a history of African Americans is much needed in this time. Attractions like this may be the only way our black kids are going to get a sense of who they are and where they come from since they are not being taught in school in many states

Alicia S.

Yelp
Structures. This was the feature that we marveled at. Great explanations and pictures. I love how they describes the details and included the original artists sketch of the building - maybe this was done by the architect. One room had a video playing on the projector so you can hear the artists vision come to life. Different abstracts and you can feel their passion in the descriptions. Easy to enter and walk through. The whole place was clean and sparkling - a nice welcome. The lady in the gift center answered our questions and saw us off.

Viki N.

Yelp
We booked a one hour guided tour for 24 adult ladies. Whitney was our tour guide and she did a nice job explaining the exhibits and providing a brief history of the Center. Actually there was not much to tour in the facility and I would like to see more arts and history displayed. I realize that comes with a cost. Not being a resident of Charlotte I do not feel that I have A vested interest. We traveled by Amtrak, then private shuttle to take thi

Yelp
Such an amazing museum full of Our history and Our stories. Beautifully displayed. Such moving pieces that all make a huge impact on Our culture and the art world. Definitely a must see exhibition experience when visiting Charlotte or even if you're a native and haven't been before. So happy I made the trip from Atlanta and were able to see this before the Christmas holiday.

Daijai W.

Yelp
I've lived in Charlotte, NC for 10+ years and this was my very first experience attending the Harvey B. Gantt Center. It was so amazing and I hope to return within the next couple months when they add in new exhibits and art!

Khari J. S.

Yelp
This is only the second time my being at the Harvey Gantt Center for African American culture, and this was a superb gathering. Title of this program is afro pop, a celebration of culture Dance Art all culminating on three levels of the art museum. This museum is a masterpiece in its celebration of African art, culture and lifestyle, nestled right in the Uptown of Charlotte with other notable museums. Between the multiple fashion shows with new fresh designs by local designers, rhythmic African dance displays, Lively well participated dance classes teaching African dance, Soca dancing and other dances I had no idea what they were doing, but fun was had by the participants... At 10:00pm/ 2200, the rooftop came alive as the after party kicked in and blew the roof off the sucker till 1 p.m... The night views from this vantage point is noteworthy and the weather was perfect, a mild light breeze at 70° on the roof at 10:30pm...

Yelp
A lovely venue for African American cultural development in all its forms. It provides a safe and comfortable setting in which music, dance, artistic expression, spoken word, etc can all be portrayed and celebrated to the fullest. Very sharp looking building, new age development style. Located conveniently in the heart of Charlotte, it is easy to access. Honoring an amazing man, I wish there were more places like this.

Chelia S.

Yelp
The only thing I dislike about this center is that there isn't more to see :-( They host pretty awesome exhibits which includes anything from a sculptures/mixed media/paintings/photography. This is not necessarily a museum of African American History although you may catch some glimpses of history depending on what a particular artist is aiming to showcase. The atmosphere is clean and simple, not to detract from the featured artists. The gift shop is also pretty neat, plenty of unique items.

Asia A.

Yelp
This museum does a beautiful job showcasing the African American culture in Charlotte. I was so pleased with their 3 exhibits, well... more specifically the 2 exhibits on the 3rd floor are what I'd recommend. The "neighborhood" exhibit was so captivating (the artist shows the real fears/reality of gentrification), and the video compilation (which is filled with the thoughts and voices of familiar men of differing generations and backgrounds) expressing their views on tabu issues within the African American culture. I could have sat and listened for hours! Very well done!

Bianka M.

Yelp
Great venue for an exceptional cultural experience as well as viewings, networking events, celebrations, art, etc... My husband and I have had the pleasure of attending all mentioned and more not listed events at this venue and we have never had a bad experience. The staff is great, the space is awesome, the decor and art displayed is very easy on the eye. We have not purchased a membership and pay as we go, however after taking but time to review the membership options we will be heading in to purchase a family membership as we often have out of town visits being from Chicago and NYC. It'll be great to take visitors while in town to see something worth seeing in Charlotte and memorable. Annually a Christmas Jazz red carpet event is held which is always a hit. I regret not renting the rooftop for my Bday last year however if we stay there are plenty of years to come.

Tiffany H.

Yelp
This was my favorite museum uptown charlotte. They had some really nice pieces and I honestly would be interested in purchasing. It's in the museum area and has some pretty unique architecture to it. The tickets are a reasonable price. I came on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. I was able to explore the art. I liked the gift shop as well. I wish the gift shops was bigger. Overall The museum had a lot of blank space and I really wish there was more or they used all of the space to show art. In addition, I wish they had some art that remained to show the African American or black journey or highlight the history in retrospect to Charlotte. I will venture back to this museum to attend their events because I am intrigued. I recommend and think it's a great place for a date night, tourist, or someone who wants to explore their city. Hope this helps!

Yelp
Excellent exhibit. Amazing works of art. Staff very friendly. Black excellence at its finest.

Regina H.

Yelp
I loved this musuem. We were in town for a gala at the MINT musuem and everyone recommended this museum as a local treasure. The building is beautiful and organized with great detail. We were greeted immediately and in such a kind, professional way. There is so much to see and we enjoyed three floors of artwork, storytelling and the influx of information. This museum is a gem amid the hustle and bustle of the city. You must take 30 minutes to come in and go back in time and learn about our country's beginning and be reengerized by it's growth. The artwork brings you back and forward with renewed pride, we are innovators, artists, revoluntaries and world leaders. Yes, we have dark moments but we are a Superpower for a reason. Please support your local treasure.

LaTamera W.

Yelp
Beautiful gallery. educational and beautifully laid out. The self-guided tour was peaceful. I visited on a less than busy day while in town for a race. The most enjoyable exhibit was the one about a local community, Welcome to Brookhill. The historical data and local inclusion of current residents was impactful to me. I appreciated it. I did end up following an artist on their social media account. I liked that it was available on various projects. We also browsed the gift shop. The cashier was friendly. Being an out-of-town visitor, I was a little jealous that I had just missed out on the yoga and mimosas.

Cora N.

Yelp
Fabulous Museum. Small, but well curated. I will absolutely go again next time I'm in town. It is worth your time to check it out!

Tiffany H.

Yelp
The facility is clean and easy to navigate! The featured exhibits were: Alison Saar: The Nature of Us Jordan Casteel: Harlem Notes Zun Lee: Father Figure The Future is Abstract I found a favorite piece in each collection. Alison Sara's "The Nature of Us" features contemporary reimagined objects to depict the lives of women via sculptures, mixed-media works and prints. My favorites are "Weight (2012), Lunarseas: Sea of Serenity (2008), and Sea of Nectar (2008)." Jordan Casteel's Harlem Notes explores Harlem locals through color. Her ability to build dimension through various hues and textures bring the painted canvases to life - on a "larger than life" scale. Zun Lee's Father Figure is a beautiful tribute to Black undocumented fatherhood and opposes the stereotypes of the traditional AA father (as poorly reflected in mainstream media). LOVE this tribute!

Vesta W.

Yelp
I really wish this museum had a permanent black history exhibit along with it's featured exhibits. This would make it feel less like it is just a black art gallery and more like a museum of black history and art. The bookstore has more black history teachable material than the museum. I am sure artist would be willing to donate art work around a civil rights movement theme or a slavery theme that tells a story that our children and families could visit and be moved by. The Levine Museum of the New South even has a small fraction of its permanent exhibit dedicated to the civil rights movement in an interactive way. I would patronize again no doubt for the presentations, fundraisers, social events and the featured black artist showcased exhibits however I was disappointed at the amount of white space and open space in the museum.

Anita T.

Yelp
Each exhibit was unexpected in how very creative and powerful they were. Although, it was a little confusing as to where all the exhibits were located. There were a few downstairs that I may have missed but upstairs, all the exhibits are in rooms. I would have never known to go in if I didn't go with someone who had been before. There is a parking deck that is not too far of a walk to the museum. I can't remember if they validate parking (I am almost sure they don't) but they do offer a discount for students. Bring your student I.D. to get a discount. Overall, I loved the exhibits. The specific day we went, they were apparently having an event later which we weren't told about and they ended up rushing us out. We paid to see the museum and they rushed us out for an event that wasn't even in the areas where we were viewing. There is a lot more that I can say about that but I will keep it to myself. #Stayhumble

William W.

Yelp
A museum that all should visit. And don't forget Wednesday all get in free from 5:00-9:00pm.

Em H.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my recent trip to the Gantt museum. I liked the different types of art that were offered...photography, painting, sculptures, and mixed media. Alison Saar's exhibit was my favorite. There were some amazing almost interactive pieces and the sculptures of various states of being in the life of a woman was fantastic. The paintings of the men from Harlem were also really good. I felt like I was there, hanging out with some of the gentlemen!

Demetria W.

Yelp
I was here this past weekend and visited exhibit: America I Am the African American Imprint. The exhibit was very educational, interesting and inspiring. The tour began all the way from the beginning to the present. A very eye opening tour to see what so many went through back then. At the end of the tour, we went down the the gift shop. I wanted to buy just about everything in the store, but the items were a little pricey. The Harvey B. Gantt building located in uptown Charlotte and is very modern and sleek They hold different events there at different times. While we were there, a wedding was taking place on the floor above us.

Ivy H.

Yelp
This is a great place for kids and first dates and if you want to buy a great piece of art

Sporadic W.

Yelp
Went here today for the Bank of America Museums on Us program, which offers free museum admission to BOA debit or credit card holders on the first weekend of every month. As a bonus, I went with a friend and the Harvey B. Gantt museum staff allowed my friend in free too. I think the gal said it is because they are a smaller museum.. It's a nice gesture. The gal at check-in was super sweet and told us what exhibits were on each floor and about upcoming events. Thank you for that information! Today, we saw the 1960Now exhibit which was modern era photos of recent political and anti-police brutality marches and protests.. Freddie Gray (Baltimore), Ferguson (Mike Brown), Black Lives Matter, etc. It was pretty neat to see activism and artistry developed from photos.. A live living history of present day. We saw "Art of a New Deal/WPA," which sadly I'm still uneducated on what WPA stands for. My assumption is that it was mostly Black artists in New York City. I remember reading that Romare Bearden was excluded from the program because he had a full-time job. Last but not least, the best exhibit IMO, the Dance Theatre of Harlem! They showed posters, photographs of practice and shows, playbills from around the world (China, England, Italy, Austria, Spain, Jamaica, Russia, etc.), costumes, letters from dancers, information about and artifacts from the founder (Arthur Mitchell), and films of various stage plays. It was very interesting. The only thing that I wasn't so fond of.. Most of the gallery/exhibits are not allowed to be photographed. I wanted to take photos for someone who couldn't visit the exhibit, due to being incarcerated so that he could see that there are viable alternatives and positive, encouraging, historical stories that would motivate and educate him. That would be the only thing that I would change.. Policy. The gallery is small and will take about 1 - 1.5 hours, if you're like me and like to read and look at everything.. Soak in everything and take your leisurely time! The exterior view of the building is really something else, the architecture is pretty neat. The galleries begin on the second story and expand to the third floor. The second story also has some classroom space for interactive events, plays, educational learning and family experiences, music galas, etc. Important note: do not attempt to ride the large elevator up from 2 to 3. We almost got stuck. The security guard kindly rescued us before we both had panic attacks. LOL there is a regular passenger elevator towards the info desk, otherwise use the stairs. Restrooms were clean. I will most likely return in the future.

Alice B.

Yelp
Excellent stop in Uptown Charlotte for the culture vultures . The Gantt features amazing art in a beautiful building . This museum is also easy to get to ( right off of I-77 and 277) and is within walking distance to other museums ( Mint Uptown and Betchler). I usually park at 'The Green' and walk to the museum. There is a gift shop on the first floor and exhibits on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Keeps your ear to the ground for various events that include and take place at this museum.

Nada S.

Yelp
One of my favorite museums. They have a fairly new collection from a local Charlotte folk artist who actually used real cloth fabric from African Americans who grew up in Charlotte and based her paintings on collections of her memories and these people! Her pieces are beautiful and make sure to check out the cool pottery and quilt selection on the third floor!

Rose L.

Yelp
I visited for "Gantt After Dark", a great way to see the museum for free (usually) and occurs on the third Wednesday of the month. The museum is typically $9/person, although you can purchase a Groupon typically and gain entrance for two for $8. Honestly, the A-OK review for this museum is due to its sparseness. Although there are about three rotating exhibits, the work is more modern-art centric with lots of empty, open spaces. The Gantt After Dark event allows people to explore the exhibits, provides guided tours, live music, the occasional media artist and film. You also typically have the chance to pay for extra events: nude model drawing, wine pairings, etc. You'll find some snacks to sample throughout the gallery and wine/beer for purchase. I would recommend a visit to the Gantt museum for a local that lives in Charlotte but I wouldn't say it's a draw for a traveler to Charlotte. And of course keep in mind that impressions can change as the art in the galleries change. But as far as art galleries that I've visit goes, I'd rank this one middle of the road.

Kay W.

Yelp
Beautifully architectured building and the staff is friendly. There are only a few exhibits but it is worth supporting the museum so that they may grow and flourish.

Demetria M.

Yelp
Took advantage of the free admission at this simply beautiful arts & culture center and hate I'm just getting to visit. The 'America I Am' exhibit was simply amazing from start to finish and my son was so intrigued with everything he learned. It reminded me of some parts of the civil rights museum in Memphis but on a smaller scale. I'll definitely continue to support the Gantt Center.

Anthony D.

Yelp
Great artwork and cultural experience for both adults and children. There was a scavenger hunt sheet that was a challenge to complete that my daughter really liked and the there are a lot of opportunities to explain to kids the importances of African-American historical influence in America as well as art in general. This place is perfect for a class tour or vacation destination.

Dee Dee C.

Yelp
I love the concept of this place, but at $9 for an adult admission I'm disappointed in the number of items and selection that were on collection in the galleries. However, if you want to support the preservation of black art this is a great place to spend an hour in.

Ibrahim Z.

Yelp
Absolutely loved it for what it had. Very enlightening for the march in Selma A must while in Charlotte.

Jess R.

Yelp
Beautiful museum with really beautiful well curated exhibits. The building itself is art, its gorgeous. The staff was friendly and answered many questions for us. We had a wonderful time perusing the galleries, and will definitely return. Theres a rooftop area available for private parties, I bet its gorgeous up there!

Brandon R.

Yelp
Outstanding museum with vivid exhibits outlining the truth and strength of our people!
