"See You Tomorrow" Cantina took over this corner space in the Gaslamp Quarter when the former longtime tenant decided to move two suites northward on Fifth Ave. The interior was spruced up with neon coloring and patterns to make it look more upscale. There was at least one convention happening in downtown during my visit as quite a few customers had a lanyard badge around their neck. It's always good to see this area buzzing on what is normally a slow weeknight.
The menu had a focus on Baja coastal cuisine, however the copy I received seemed incomplete. The online version had an Entrées section that listed six items. It was missing from the sheet which probably meant the kitchen wasn't ready to serve the entrées yet because the place has been open for less than one week. Appetizers, soups/salads, taco plates, and more were the categories.
My initial plan was to order an appetizer and a taco plate, but my server said the plates were large as they included two tacos (or a burrito) plus achiote rice and slow cooked beans. I heeded his advice and picked the Flautas de Tres Carnes. Amarillo pork, rojo beef, and verde chicken were stuffed inside a flour tortilla and deep fried. There were four pieces that were stacked and topped with lime crema, salsa fresca, guacamole, chicharron, cotija, and pickled onions. Not only was this item packed with flavor, but it filled me up by itself.
I did want to try something else so I saved one of the flautas to take home and asked for a cup of Pozole Verde with rojo beef added. The green broth was laced with anaheim and serrano chiles, hominy, cilantro, chipotle, and crispy shallots. Cabbage shreds, oregano, and red chili flakes were provided on the side as additional toppings. I probably didn't need the beef as the soup had plenty of seasoning even without the oregano and chili flakes. The spiciness was quite mild.
At the other tables, the common theme I noticed was a lot of food on the plate. They don't seem to skimp on the serving sizes at Hasta Mañana Cantina so the prices appear to be justified. For a new, mid-level Mexican restaurant, my dining experience was satisfactory enough to earn four stars.
