13 Restaurants in Philly for Crispy, Crunchy Fried Chicken | Eater Philly

"Craving a late-night fried chicken sandwich? Hatch & Coop is open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The fried chicken is layered with different sauces on a buttered, toasted roll — or go for the chicken and waffle sandwich with honey butter hot sauce." - Ernest Owens

11 Philly Restaurants for Affordable Takeout | Eater

"It’s all about breakfast and fried chicken at Midtown Village’s Hatch & Coop. Egg sandwiches and bowls and available all day here, but fried chicken sandwiches steal the show. Look for spicy fried chicken, bacon-topped fried chicken, and even fried chicken served on a toasted waffle. The casual restaurant is also known for its tater tots, brownies, and ice cream sandwiches." - Vox Creative

Google
I really want to like this place, because their food has been much needed in the late hours while in center city. Unfortunately, after a few typical visits, my most recent order had a large piece of plastic wrapped up in my chicken wrap. It was the night of the eagles win so I’m giving the kitchen staff the benefit of the doubt - and I couldn’t wait around to have them remake it since we already waited 30 mins and I’d miss my train home. That being said, I alerted management the next day and have yet to hear anything back. The plastic in my chicken wrap has definitely left me feeling uneasy returning, especially with no accountability from the management.

Google
Not the most cozy dining room but the food is great, especially if you're eating high protein/low carb. Recommend the steak and eggs bowl (no bread), with onions, cheese and hatch sauce.

Google
I ordered the BCR Bacon, Cheddar, and Ranch Grilled chicken sandwich. It was absolutely Delicious! Of course you can make this at home, but who is cooking on vacation? Not me. Perfect place to grab food after hours and go back to the hotel or home. To avoid the club crowd, visit Sunday - Wednesday. MUST TRY

Google
First time in Philly, got an overnight flight and knew it was way too early to check in, so I tried to look around and see what was open + walking distance to my hotel. Randomly came across Hatch & Coop and I could not have had better luck in finding it. Not only is this spot open 24/7, but it was quiet, clean, and had a fun theme. Right away, the food looked good and the staff (Keith) were incredibly friendly and informative about the food/my options for the order. He also gave me some cool local info that, as an out of towner, I definitely appreciated. Even though the food looked really good, it didn't prepare me for how spectatcular it actually tasted. I ordered a larger size to save half for later in the day, but I was quickly reconsidering. The sandwiches are tasty enough on their own, but the house sauce is a great thing to throw on if you want a little extra something. When I'm traveling, I almost never go back to the same spot for food twice, but with a place like this so close to my hotel, I just might.

Google
Their "grilled" chicken which they charged an extra $1 for tasted like a processed piece of meat, not a fresh piece of chicken. It was dry but luckily the coleslaw and pickle made up for that. Even ketchup was an upside "sauce". The people behind the counter were very disconnected and didn't even say hello. You ordered via a touch screen and never spoke with a person.

Google
Love hatch & coop! Their customer service, their promptness when they get an order. The best part!? They don’t charge for EXTRA MEAT!!!!!!!!! No complaints they’re open 24hrs whether you’re looking for a breakfast sandwich or a late night grub this is your sign to try Hatch!!! I’ve been multiple times and have tried three different sandwiches and none disappointed! The fries could be cooked a little longer they’re kinda soggy when place in that brown bag.

Google
You need to do better. The sandwich wasn't good at all. Yes, its one of the few places open late hours but people won't return on bad food. Unfortunately its below mid at best.

Ashlee O

Google
Placed a late night order as the restaurant is advertised to be a late night/24 fast food place. I waited over an hour for a doordash order I placed. I had a driver reassigned not once, not twice, but 3 times because of how long it was taking. I tried calling the restaurant multiple times and no one picked up the phone. Sadly, I have no idea how the food tastes. But I strongly recommend NOT to order online. If you're close enough, walk there or pray you don't lose your parking spot to drive over

Yelp
6'2024 Super convenient, open all night spot. This place happened to be at the end of the block from my Air BnB at 1am. I was hungry, and open to a yum late night meal. They were crowded but quick! Hubby and enjoyed our food (pictured) and would certainly visit again. I highly recommend this spot for great late night eats.

Yelp
I've been here before and it was okay. but this recent time I ordered the chicken cheesesteak and it was terrible; i'm not being hyperbolic - it's legitimately embarassing. Completely dry and worse than I could make. Their online has a great deal of 50% off the next chicken cheesesteak, so I also got another one but I chose the wrap option. And it's at this point you wonder whether they're just messing with you -- the wrap chicken cheesesteak is 30% the size of the roll chicken cheesesteak. Of course even the full-sized one wasn't worth it as mentioned above but the wrap even before unraveling it was absurd. Very comedic. I honestly would try this place again, but very sternly argue against any chicken cheesesteak! 24/7 is neat (esp in Philly) and the place is always empty and can have a group + they have outlets.

Yelp
Hatch & Coop is 24-hr eatery serving egg and chicken dishes that would satisfy any late night craving. --- If you're ever craving an egg or chicken sandwich at odd hours of the day, Hatch & Coop is your place. There are many tables, making it good for groups, but the interior is pretty bare. The wall is adorned with whimsical fox and chicken imagery, referencing the Hatch and Coop name. As of 05/2025, they supposedly offer 10% off your order by showing your SEPTA card. But, I'd confirm this offer before ordering to ensure it's honored. When I was there in the early morning, the cook (who also takes orders) didn't recognize the deal and didn't know how to punch it in. So, it was a bit of a letdown we couldn't redeem the deal, but we still wanted to try the sandwiches after hearing great things about them. I ordered The Hatch and Coop Sandwich (egg, cheese, chicken) on a round roll at the kiosk. You can customize your bread, egg (fried or scrambled), and cheese (provolone, american, or cheddar). The sandwiches come without any sauce unless you order sauce (extra $$) on the side. I highly recommend the Hatch Sauce- a typical mayo sauce with a little spice. I found The Hatch and Coop Sandwich to be just pretty good but I wish it had more heft to it. The chicken was juicy and well cooked, but I wish there was more. The cheese did the cheesing and coated the chicken, but the sandwich had far too many onions for my liking. With the Hatch Sauce, I felt the sandwich was tied together but it was a little odd to me the sandwich doesn't have sauce on its own. I'm giving Hatch and Coop the benefit of the doubt since it was so early in the morning, but I found my sandwich to be just OK. However, I will be back to try the fried chicken sandwiches, which I've heard rave reviews for.

Yelp
Do not come here late night, rush hour, or any time there is a wait. They literally make each order one at a time. The fellas here are hard working and churning out orders, but the system in which they are given orders is very very bad. You will be waiting for at least 45 minutes for your order if there are more than two people ahead of you. This system is all bad. Other than that the fries were really good.

Yelp
This Place Smelt So Bad It's Not Even Funny. It Smelt Like My Grandmas Shitty Diapers. My Chicken Was Pink And There Was Flys Flying Around My Server. I Asked To Speak To The Manager About My Horrible Experience And He Had No remorse And a Horrible Attitude. My Fries Were Also Cold And They Put Onions In My Cheesesteak When I Specifically Told Them Not To Because I Am Deadly Allergic. So Not Only Did I Have A Horrible Experience But It Was Followed By A ER Trip. Do Not Come Here This Was Genuinely The Worst Thing I've Ever Experienced. Do Not Come Here Ever Save Your Money And Time.

Emi F.

Yelp
This place is horrible, the boss is so rude. And when I went to the place to order. The employees were HORRID. My chicken had flys around it. And the ac was broken, because it's so HOT. It smelt so BAD. And save ur money, DO NOT COME HERE. It tasted so bad I almost threw up as well.

Yelp
We came here for a very late dinner at 11:30 pm because most other places in Philadelphia stop serving food by 10 or 11 pm on a weeknight. The restaurant was brightly lit and quite busy. The kitchen and dining area were pretty beat up and dirty. I had a spicy chicken sandwich with coleslaw and pickles on top, my kid had the classic with lettuce and tomato. Mine was surprisingly tasty, on par with Popeye's. The kid had to take off the lettuce because it had visible brown dirt on the leaves as though it were never washed. Still she enjoyed the taste of the rest of the sandwich. We also had fries that were soggy and limp. Overall this is a place to go only when you're desperate for food at night.

Yelp
This is my second time trying Hatch and Coop and I really wanted this to be a go to for late nights but somehow the food and service is worse than last time. This is one of the only late night spots in Philly. If you have no other option please just Uber eats from Wawa, take the short trip to one of the many taco spots in South Philly, or just go to bed hungry. The chicken and waffles are served on a liege style Eggo waffle. It's literally an Eggo waffle I watched the cook rip it out the pack. The Hatch sauce is good but I could not get over paying that much for a freaking frozen waffle and probably a frozen chicken tender. It's very much a gentrified fast food spot. The best thing about this place is the cute light they have out the front with their logo in it. There's just a few tables lined up on the back wall. They do have touch screen ordering but I wouldn't dare touch one on any late night. And it's usually packed so it's best to order online. Again skip this place. The food is nothing to call home about and it's not going to be the remedy for your hangover. The security guard was also one of the most rude people I have ever encountered. I completely understand he has to deal with drunk people but it is never an excuse to be nasty to a customer or to staff. He was so rude to one of his coworkers I couldn't believe it. If I hadn't already received my food I would have requested a refund from his attitude alone.

Yelp
After first walking in, I felt like I was in a run down, poorly maintained kitchen that probably shouldn't be open. Most surfaces were dirty and the cook top didn't look any better. The staff was kind and quick (we were the only people inside). One cook was there the whole time, two other cooks came and went for some reason? The fried chicken in my chicken sandwich was a little dry/overdone, but honestly I was happy because I was fairly worried about food poisoning. The fries were bland, no salt or seasoning. The sauces I ordered for my meal came pre-packaged, nothing made inside the kitchen. I was actually happy everything was prepackaged/cooked so I knew it was sealed and not contaminated. The overall experience was fine. I didn't get sick, but I won't be going back there again.

Yelp
Really appreciate the store owner going out of their way to deliver our missing Uber eats items. The brisket and bbq sandwiches were fantastic!

Yelp
open 24/7 hours, good food for post night-out although it was a little too greasy, good tables to dine in

Yelp
The way in which I audibly gasped when I took a bite of my sandwich from Hatch & Coop had my co-workers staring like I had three heads. Completely and utterly impressed with this place. I was worried that there was not a single customer inside this establishment when I walked in, but that didn't deter me from ordering food. My to-go order was placed through the kiosk at the front and I paid using my debit card. I got fries with dipping sauce, an eggplant sandwich and a seltzer water. I waited about 10 mins for the food to be ready. Nothing really stood out to me about the fries, except that they reminded me of fries from McDonald's. They were salted and still hot when I ate them. The eggplant sandwich, however... WOWZA! A slice of eggplant seasoned and fried on a King's Hawaiian roll. One bite and I was ready to go to town. It was nice that the cole slaw and sauce were in separate containers because I could see how the sandwich could get soggy if both were already on the sandwich. I had about a 10 min walk back to my office and it was still crispy and in tact. Not much to say about the seltzer as it was an average black cherry flavored club soda. They had a variety of beverages to choose from in the cooler. The staff was friendly and efficient. I'll be back and will possibly dine in next time!

Yelp
So I found this place online after landing late night in the city and starving for a cheesesteak. The restaurant is located in what I assume is the club district of the city so it was busy. Upon arrival the restaurant was flooded with people all seemed to have been waiting for a long time. There was a area designated to pick up online orders but no one acknowledged me while I waited there. So I made my way over to the area where the register was and that was a nightmare. As people kept shouting at the person bagging orders their order numbers, he was overwhelmed and unable to even process what was happening. I asked for my order number once I finally got his attention and he told me it was not ready ( I had gotten a text 30 minutes prior that told me my order was ready. After another 15 minutes of waiting another customer reached over the partition and started looking at orders and found mine, sitting there, now cold, where he had already looked. Once I got my order I ran to my car and opened my lukewarm meal and while it looked really good, the taste did not match the appearance. The cheesesteak was bland, bland, bland. The meat was cooked well, the bread was fresh, and even though it was all good ingredients the meal was lackluster to say the least. I ate the first half out of hunger and the fries, the rest went to the trash. Maybe at a better time of day this would be someplace to try but I would never return.

Yelp
This was such a cool late night find! I really Would love to have one in DC. And it would actively help to make that happen! :) The choices were great and delicious. And the music made it almost like a late night club scene.

Gary D.

Yelp
$13 for a chicken sandwich is CRAZY with no sides or anything. This is a chicken tender not a cutlet and definitely not worth the $13 for a spicy chicken sandwich. This has to be a joke.
google avatar

David d.

Yelp
Great late night chicken sandwich in the heart of the Gayborhood. Just what I needed!
google avatar

Jade J.

Yelp
Oh my goodness...You need to try Hatch & Coop. This is one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. The workers at this location are super friendly and provide great recommendations. My favorite sandwich was the Coop since I loved the slaw mix pairing and the chicken was so tender. The fried pickles were also excellent and perfectly crispy along with the homemade house sauce. The service was quick! Highly recommend this place if you want high quality large sandwiches for pretty decent prices.

Yelp
This review is for the food. I've been walking by this spot for a while now and was excited to try it after all the good reviews. Popped in for lunch today and ordered The Coop (spicy). I came home and was disappointed to see the chicken looked burnt. I thought let me bite into it and maybe it'll taste fine. But nope, it tasted burnt. Pretty disappointed
google avatar

Yelp
This 24-hour spot has great fried chicken sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches that are great for takeout. They also have indoor seating, but we usually just take the order to go since we live nearby. Their tots (usually) hit the spot, and their hatch sauce pairs well for dipping! The Hatch and Coop has to be one of my favorite sandwiches with egg, while the Coop is a great combination of flavors for an eggless option. It's consistently a solid place to order from! Oh and you should absolutely add their spicy pickles to your order as well!
google avatar

Ali T.

Yelp
Cute little spot for breakfast food. Seems to be A take on the classic "chicken and waffles "paradigm. Service is efficient and the staff are friendly. Ordering is via kiosks or online prior to arrival. Sitting at this particular location is actually pretty decent... Especially for downtown Philly. We shared the chicken and waffles, the hatch, and tater tots. All of it was amazing! They have a variety of spicy sauces and toppings to choose from if you want some heat! Would absolutely return next time we are in Philly. On weekdays it's not very crowded even during breakfast rush.

Yelp
My coworker and I wanted a new place for lunch and after waking by Hatch & Coop yesterday decided to make it a lunch date today. The restaurant was empty just after 12pm except for the three workers. All were very friendly and helpful. A Yelp Check-In gets you 15% off! However, you have to get the staff to input the order and discount otherwise you order off the kiosk. The kiosk ordering which we started with was very easy to navigate and straight forward as to the prices for extras and making removals. We ordered the chicken bacon ranch, and a regular chicken along with some fries. The Coke and water were very high priced at over $2 each. Our food was served very quickly and I have to say it was fine but nothing to crow about. Huge bonus for having my favorite brand of Sriracha on each of the tables. The shoestring fries were crispy and seasoned but also went well with the Mayo sauce that came with it. The chicken sandwiches were filling, not overdone in the fryer, and not disappointing. Other people's photos were pretty much what we received. No photos as we just started chowing down. But, I believe I've had better tasting chicken sandwiches at Freebyrd Chicken in the Bourse, the chicken sandwich at Hunger Burger in the Reading Terminal Market, and even Shake Shack's was better. So, we're glad to have tried a new place, but I'm not certain we'd come back. The walk was nice in the beautiful weather with my coworker. About $25 for the two chicken sandwiches, plain fries, and a soda and water. No cash taken here; have to pay with credit.

Paco D.

Yelp
This place is so atrocious that I am making it my life's mission to make sure they go out of business. We waited an hour and a half for our food, and when we finally got it, one of the employees told us we couldn't have 4 people at our table - the maximum was 3. The tables are clearly big enough for 4 people, and regardless, all the other tables were empty because it was so late. The food is mediocre at best and not worth the wait given the extremely slow and rude service. Literally any other place is better. Do not go here no matter how hungry you are.

Yelp
Hatch & Coop on South 12th Street in the Jefferson University Medical Center neighborhood is a perfect place to catch a tasty breakfast either before or after an appointment with your doctor (In my case, before). Walking in the first impression is of gray/black walls and loud reggae music. Attractive in a quasi industrial kind of ethos. Counter and kitchen along one wall and a half dozen tables against the other. Orders are taken via kiosk, which is easily followed, and then prepared and served by a worker with a smile. Their 50/50 Sandwich comes loaded with 2 scrambled eggs, choice of bacon or turkey sausage and melted cheese on a Hawaiian Roll, with sautéed onion and special house mayonnaise slid in to fit under the hood. First bite was enough to get me excited. The sweetness of the roll was challenged by the savory of the sausage and onions, while the eggs were soft and neutral, and the mayo tickled the buds with a little heat. It was an excellent sammy. Only shortcoming was the complete absence of coffee in the house. Boy, what I would have done for a large mugga joe! A plastic bottle of water is not a real alternative when caffeine is called for that time of day. Still, the atmosphere was chill and utilitarian and they will be open 24/7 soon. With the hospital down the street, these guys should be busy any time of day or night. Hatch should be a feast for the senses for those folks.

Yelp
very nice people food is good love the art work. Very Philly. The chicken taste really fresh.

Yelp
I'm back in CA after a visit to Philly and I'm already craving this place! My boyfriend and I found this place randomly on Yelp but ended up stopping by twice within a 4-day visit. We ordered the chicken and waffle sandwich and it was SO. GOOD. The chicken is crispy and the buns are Belgian sugar waffles, which were super tasty. They also provided honey for us to drizzle on top. It was super flavorful and cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back the next time we're in town!
google avatar

Julie K.

Yelp
The fried chicken waffle sandwich + fried egg wasn't the best but you can't really expect the best at 3am lol Chicken was very flat. The maple syrup sauce was too sweet and tasted a bit off so halfway through, I discarded the waffle that had the syrup drizzle and just ate the chicken. Still made my stomach slightly upset.... Staff is prompt and nice!
google avatar

Daniela D.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber eats so not sure what the vibe is inside. Food was pretty average. A good choice if you're looking for a super fast and easy spot to grab food. I wouldn't choose this spot if I was actually hungry for a good meal though. This is definitely a grab and go type of vibe.

Yelp
This place is a small fried chicken sandwich spot in Philly. We were brought here by a friend who knew of this spot. Although it seems like just a regular nothing fancy chicken spot...this place did not disappoint. As soon as we walked in we were greeted. You put your orders in on one of the 2 kiosks that they have there, so it was definitely easy to order. I got a Spicy Coop Sandwich topped with a fried egg. which had great flavor and good heat. I took the other one home to my cousin's and he devoured it in minutes. I also got a side of tots which were fresh crispy and yummy! I loved that they had paper towel rolls at every table knowing it's gonna be messy eats.

Sandra S.

Yelp
First time going to Hatch&Coop! Didn't even know it existed until i worked around the corner. I got the steak breakfast sandwich and it was good. Keith and Alicia were a VIBE. That duo together is definitely a burst of energy you love to see on a Friday. They were very accommodating and friendly. Tried their ice cream and waffles and they have me and my team wanting to come back for more!

Denny K.

Yelp
Good food- only downside is that the portion size could be better. The service is excellent, and the servers are friendly and helpful. It's a cool little breakfast spot good for a nice sit down or a quick grab and go. In my opinion it's best for a picnic meal.

Emily H.

Yelp
Food is fire.. I got the chicken and waffles and the cheesesteak, and both were insanely good. Food was ready fast and its a chill spot within walking distance of all my favorite bars.
google avatar

Nadine P.

Yelp
Food was great for the price and service was very friendly. Really liked the fries and the fact they're open 24 hours. Would go back for sure.
google avatar

Ari X.

Yelp
Decent waffle and chicken sandwich, extremely naseuous the next morning but that could be because I drink alot last night too... would go back just not so soon
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
I love, love, love their steak and egg sandwiches! Their chicken sandwiches are good, too. Cashiers are very friendly, and the place is a great sit-down.

David N.

Yelp
Just so messed up there's nowhere else to get food past 11 in this town. They had 2 people working for over 20+ hungry people at any given time. What's the point lol. Plz invest in workers who are working late.
google avatar

Darrell H.

Yelp
We came to this place as a backup because our original choice was too crowded. Boy we really got lucky because this place was great. I think the owner or manager Dave was pleasantly surprised that we was dining in. Most of their business is takeout or food delivery orders. I had the chicken cheesesteak which was great. My wife's food was even better. She had a egg on a roll and it was great since they used Hawaiian buns. Dave constantly checked up on us to make sure we was ok and even gave us a free brownie at the end. He is really appreciative of the customers who visit his restaurant
google avatar

Trevor T.

Yelp
nice people. but by far the most awful chicken sandwich ever tasted. it was like a rubber sole from an old boot. They were nice enough to remake it then delivered to the wrong address i went to bed hungry. it was late. i would stick to the grilled options. the fried chicken was really cold and inedible.
google avatar

Shanel S.

Yelp
Solid food for late night. Nothing special or crave worthy. Basic but great friendly staff with fast service. It truly is a fast-ish food place. Staff was great tho. So that's a plus. Late night drunkards need pleasant patient people
google avatar

Casey F.

Yelp
My co-workers and I were looking for a sandwich shop near our office and we found this gem! We were thankful that they delivered and decided to place an order. I ordered the BBQ Sandwich. It was really good, just a tad crispier than I would have liked it. I also would have wanted a little bit more barbecue sauce on top. It was still delicious though! LOVEDDD the tater tots!
google avatar

Lauren I.

Yelp
Not a bad sandwich, but the fries (which smelled incredible) were a bit of a let-down. I'm absolutely going to go back and try something else though! I have good feelings about the food here.

Oisin D.

Yelp
Phenomenal again. Great chicken sandwich and even better customer service at very solid value. If the food is good and the people are nice that's all that matters to me!
google avatar

Ayah S.

Yelp
The food is fresh and tastes amazing. Not greasy at all.. chicken sandwich and waffle breakfast sandwich both cooked to perfection. Service was exceptional, friendly staff. Ambiance ... super clean and great classic music playing. Definitely a vibe.

Luna C.

Yelp
Food's not that great, portions especially are small considering how much they charge. Staff regularly forgot items in my order *but* have literally chased me down the street to tell me, so... pros and cons? Also, I wouldn't feel comfortable eating in; I get the impression the dining area isn't cleaned very often. Really not sure how they're still in business, *especially* given they're now 24hours. How do they make enough money to operate 24/7? Oh, right, see above: overcharging on small portions and not including things people pay for. It's a shame because it's literally around the corner for me. I don't like writing bad reviews. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.
google avatar

Diana H.

Yelp
Wow this place is amazing we stumbled upon it by accident and I'm so glad we did!! I've been here a couple times since and omg it looks like a regular little quick bite chicken sandwich place but it's so much better! I've gotten the coop sandwich every time because I am a creature of habit and it's always 10/10 very impressed by how the quality never falters. The coleslaw is sweet and the chicken crispy with that coop sauce it's the perfect blend of flavors! Service is also 10/10 very quick and easy.

Yelp
This used to be a go to for me when I worked in Center City but the quality and service has gone down drastically. 1. The food: I placed an order for about 5-6 different items. Of those items, none would I order again and 2 items were completely inedible. See picture of burnt onions and I wish yelp allowed videos because the pickle chips sounded like a hammer against my wooden table. 2. Service: I called after traveling back home to inform them of this issue and was told I would receive a refund. I should note that I wasn't asking for a full refund of the over $40 I spent on lackluster items but simply for the $12 value of the items that were inedible. That was on Sunday. It is now Wednesday and I have called 4 times total as every time I called, I was told I would receive a call back that same day after they processed the refund. My last call I was told to email the owner, Tyler, about my concerns. There are far better options in the area so please take heed to the negative reviews and choose wisely. UPDATE: I did receive notification of a prompt refund after emailing with Tyler.

Yelp
Quality has gotten noticeably worse. Ordered from here and spent 45 dollars for 2 chicken sandwiches, a can of soda, and fried pickles. They sent over 5-6 pickle chips that were so burnt that they weren't edible in any sense of the word and forgot the coke. Can't see a scenario in which I would order from here again. Used to tell people to order from here too, it's a shame.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my bfast here. Delicious and unique. Recommend it highly. The king hawaiian rolls was nice and fresh and the bacon perfect. Yummy.
