The Best Places to Eat at the Jean-Talon Market | Eater Montreal

"A great place to scream for ice cream, especially when the season for the dessert is as limited as it is. Ice cream flavours include pistachio and dulce de leche, and sorbets like nectarine and masala chai make it hard to stop at only one scoop." - Mallory Frayn

Google
It tastes so real! Super tasty flavor bombs! I took pistachio (best I ever had), hazelnut and some caramel or maple one. It's weird that people call it gelato because she said it's artisanal ice cream. Gelato has no cream and more sugar. They were kind and let me taste a few. I picked a cup instead of cone. No place to sit but it's at jean-talon market, and there are pic nic rables nearby even in winter.

One of the best parts of Jean Talon market and arguably one of the best gelatos I've ever had. The best part about this place are the unique flavors they have such as Tangerine, Pear, Grapefruit, Passion Fruit, Coconut, Dulche de leche, Mango, and so many more. The staff was friendly and allowed me to try multiple flavors before zeroing in one. What I also loved about this place is that they have small bowls for $5 (where you get two scoops of different flavors) which I thought was better than most places that expect you to shell out a lot more for a quantity of ice cream you probably struggle to finish. Would definitely come here again.

Google
Nice little gelato spot in the Jean talon market I loved the gelato here! Super creamy and so velvety too! Had the espresso flavour and on point flavour! Came in the summer so this was the perfect way to cool down too! A tiny place tucked away in a little hallway and close to one of the exterior entrance / exits So good, I was tempted to buy another! Person that helped us out was really nice and did not rush us to make a choice in flavours Great job overall! Follow me on IG @thirst_and_taste for better pics, vids and more amazing content!

Google
Delicious ice-cream cakes and gelato! Every time I visit Montreal, this would be my go-to place to buy cakes for my family. For gelatos, I highly recommend the pistache and espresso flavours. The pistache gelato actually has real piece of pistachio in it!

Google
Tasty ice cream and interesting flavors. One of the shops in the market that seems to always have a line, but it's definitely worth the wait!

Google
This joint combines flavour, technique, and quality well enough for not much else to matter. It's excellent without being mind-blowing, so I'd be surprised if you were disappointed.

Google
I don’t know how they’re able to contain all that flavour in a small cup, but it’s just one of the most flavourful ice creams I’ve ever seen. They do capture the essence of the ingredient without fillers. My favourites are the brûlée caramel and chocolate. When they have porcini ice cream, run towards them. It is unusual but very delicious with all the umami

Google
The sorbet was pretty good. I tried a combo of Passionfruit and raspberry, bit of tart at first but then the flavours hit.

Yelp
We wandered to Jean Talon Market when it was about to close on a weekday and most everything was closed. This cute ice cream shop saved our would-be failed market trip. All the flavors were so amazing that I felt like I was transported to Italy. The employee was also really kind and let me try a lot of flavors before deciding. And the price was super cheap. I just wish I got two scoops instead of one!

Yelp
I visited Havre-aux-Glaces during a walking tour of Jean-Talon Market. It's a tiny but charming ice cream and sorbet shop. I tried their passionfruit and their sea buckthorn, and both were great sorbets (sweet but still a little tart) and perfect on a hot day of exploring Montreal. There was a little bit of a line when our group visited, but the service is great and the line moves really fast! I'd happily visit again on a hot day!!

Yelp
I love this little ice cream shop. Having been to the one in downtown, I knew what I was expecting in terms of flavors and quality. Le Havre aux Glaces is an artisanal ice cream parlor founded in 2004 by Robert Lachapelle, a former tax expert. They use fresh ingredients and they rely on the purity of raw materials for all of their products. Everything is homemade....Even though they have regular flavors, they also bring seasonal specials and new flavors to the store frequently.

Yelp
Every market's gotta have an ice cream stall. On a summer day at the market, I was most looking for a stop at this place. At first, I was a little concerned about dairy but yay, they have vegan sorbets and there's a great selection of flavours! So many that I didn't know what to choose. I was tempted by a combination of exotic fruits. Then I noticed some unusual flavours such as corossol (soursop) and lulo (naranjilla). I got a sample of lulo which taste is similar of groundcherry or tangy pear. I would definitely visit again and combine different flavours.

Yelp
We tried the pink grapefruit and something with maple syrup (because it's sugar season), and both tasted like fresh fruit juice! Since it's only mid-April, the market is still quiet, so we had the only table all to ourselves while enjoying the very fine sorbet. The girl at the counter was very friendly too. The mushroom shop across the way is worth checking out too.

Yelp
It's definitely good ice cream, but nothing to go out of your way for, and it's cash only. This is located in the food hall/farmers market which in itself is a nice visit and if a local, I'm sure an awesome spot to have nearby. It's serving up creamy rich ice cream/gelato with some sorbet options. On the day I visited flavors were pretty standard and out of the 3 or 4 samples I tried, flavors were very nuanced and subtle. I can't quite remember as this was a few weeks back now, but nothing too memorable. Not the cheapest ice cream, either. Overall, if you're shopping and lunching at the market and needing ice cream, I think you'll be pleased. I wouldn't necessarily make it a tourist destination! Cash only.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place over the weekend whilst exploring the Jean Talon Market. I was casually passing-by checking out the vendors when I caught a waft of warm sweet sugary goodness which stopped me in my tracks. Standing outside Havre-aux-Glaces, I could see the mouth-watering waffle cones being freshly prepared. That did it for me, I had to get one of my own! Being a weekend, the queue was quite lengthy but I didn't mind as it gave me time to decide on what to have! From Masala Chai to Maple Crème Brulee, Mango to Pink Grapefruit, we were spoilt for choice on authenticity and uniqueness! I decided to keep it simple (as it was close to breakfast time) and opted for a Cranberry & Raspberry Sorbet in their homemade waffle cone. It cost around 5$ which was a little on the steeper side, but after tasting, WOW it definitely is worth it! The flavour was divine and very fresh - you can actually taste real fruit! Cannot wait to return soon to try their signature ice creams and sample the other flavours. One visit is definitely not enough!

Yelp
Great Ice cream on a hot summer day! If your walking around downtown MTL, you'll like it here. They have so many flavours but I went with the pistachio flavour and no regrets. So creamy and not to sweet, just the way I like it. The cone wasn't stale and was good. Lots of benches to sit around to enjoy your dessert, a little market that operates and sell lots of different foods, and a nice bike/walk path across the little bridge to enjoy your day. When I come back to MTL, I'm coming back here. Ice Cream was just so good!

Yelp
Normally I don't like macaroons so the fact that I kept buying one after the other here tells me that this place is AMAZING!! they have ice cream inside the macaroons which is what drew me in the first place. They had coconut, mango, espresso, caramel, etc. I think the lady was laughing not at my French, but at the fact that I would buy one, turn around eat it, and then buy another one. I spent a good $20 trying all their flavors and going to the extreme here. Where else can you find ice cream inside an amazing macaroon for only $2 each? Best food find of my whole trip for sure!!

Yelp
Amazing Sorbet. I tried the strawberry sorbet and it was amazing. Not expensive. Good location. Staff is friendly and will let you try many flavors.

Yelp
Havres-aux-glaces is a glacerie that offers homemade ice creams and sorbets all year round. Flavors for ice cream include Maple and Pecan, Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut, Ginger, Mirabelle ice cream, Espresso, Vanilla, Dulce de Leche, and Matcha; sorbet flavors include Melon and Orange Blossom, Lemon, Mango, Mango Malai, Coconut Milk, Mirabelle Plum, Masala Chai, and Pear and Sortilege. Seasonal flavors get added all the time, so be sure to check them out! I tried a cup of raspberry, pear, and melon and orange - each had a very distinct flavor of their respective fruits - it was unbelievably refreshing and delicious! It seems as if fruits at their peak of freshness and ripeness were used, and turned into a sorbetto form. Each taste was magical, and it's probably the best sorbetto I've had in quite some time! They also have a booth at the Atwater Market, so you can check both locations out! +wonderful sorbettos! :D +friendly staff +located at both the Jean-Talon and the Atwater markets

Yelp
So glad I stumbled upon this place when exploring Jean Talon Market. This is melt in your mouth kind of gelato. They have many other treats including frozen macaroons and mini chocolate balls with ice cream. I got a combination of their pear sorbet and dulce de leche. I thought the creaminess of the dulce de leche would overpower the sorbet but no way! Both sweet flavours complimented each other well and the pear was potently delicious with every mouthful! The mini chocolate balls with ice cream are a nice, quick treat but if you want to be thoroughly impressed then try their gelato.
google avatar

Mimi J.

Yelp
Yummy ice cream! I tried a chocolate flavour and a caramel flavour, and both were very rich and satisfying! I like that they form a rose shape with the ice cream, which is a nice touch. You can wander around the rest of the market after, which is really convenient!

Yelp
This is their anchor store located at Jean Talon and really should not be missed when visiting the market place. Havres-Aux- Glaces makes ice cream, sorbets and desserts using fresh locally sourced products which change seasonally depending on freshness and availability. The quality is superb, the variety can be daunting but don't let that stop you, H-Aux-G is a real treat for ice cream lovers searching for that unique fresh flavored sweet treat sensation.

Yelp
Really cute gelato place at the Jean-Talon Market. I ordered 2 scoops in the medium cup. The first flavor I chose was Chai masala, which is made with soy milk and the other was maple crème brulée. Both were really good! The portion was decent, I think they could have packed on a bit more but other than that it was fine. They have a nice variety of sorbets. I can`t wait to try their other flavours.

Yelp
I chanced upon this ice-cream & sorbet shop when I was doing my maiden round at Jean Talon Market. I could sense that adrenaline rush in me when it comes to candied stuff and asking myself if I should get a scoop at 9am seems unwarranted. Desserts in any form always make my day, I am not a real sweet toothed but when u are away from home for an extended period of time and missed some of that comforting food, u just need something to get yourself connected and feel good. And ice cream is the easiest and cheapest means to get me excited and happy and especially when that the ice creams are laced with maple syrup - 2 maple flavored ones are waving at me from afar! Obviously there wasn't any crowd on a Friday morning when I patronized. I asked for a sample on the 2 maple ice cream and when I couldn't decide which one to get, the lady offer a mix of both even for a petite cup (the mini in the cup range). Smooth, creamy and intense, the Caramel & Maple ice cream swept me off my feet. Instantly, I revealed a broad smile! I know this is a notch sweeter than the ones I had at Maple Delights, but the latter don't partner up caramel with maple in their store. This one at Havres-aux-Glaces has a robust burnt sugar taste with a harmonious maple scent, clean and without a trace of off-flavor. Lovely. The she mixed it up with my second choice; Maple and pecans. Equally smooth and creamy, this is less nectarous than the caramel variant but it has a modest pecan bites in them, adding extra depth, quite nutty but Maple Delights is more generous in their walnut helping. The service is prompt although the lady at the counter didn't win the "most friendlier" badge from me. But the gooey taste in that single scoop makes up for that. I couldn't care much as long as it put a smile on me! $2.35 for a petite cup? Definitely worth any moment!!

Yelp
Simply the creamiest, the most flavourful and smoothest ice cream there is in Montreal. The owner focuses using local, simple, and natural ingredients. Food colouring and artificial flavouring is not part of his recipe book for what I think it's the best ice cream in Montreal. The flavours are strong, the texture is creamy and the staff is friendly! Yes, it's a bit pricier than other ice cream shops. I promise you every lick of it will be worth it! There is two main locations, which are easy to find. Across the Atwater market with views of the Lachine canal, or in the hallways of the Jean Talon Market. Both locations have the same flavours. Yet, Jean Talon Market does not have the water view to enjoy while you're indulging. To begin with, since you'll probably be back again to taste other flavours. I recommend you the combination of 70% chocolate, and the raspberry sorbet, which has a strong, summer fresh raspberries taste to it, with many pieces of raspberries. A great tangy touch to it as well! You'll be screaming for more!
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
Delicious gelato. The mango was refreshing and tasted like real mangos. The milk chocolate was excellent. Raspberry was the perfect tartness. Was impressed that he was able to fit 3 flavors into a small cup! Well worth $3.
google avatar

Mélina D.

Yelp
This is honnestly the best place in town for ice cream! Everything is bio and it taste like heaven. Like the owner said just try the vanilla ice crean and you'll understand what i mean.
google avatar

Yen D.

Yelp
This is the best gelato I have ever tasted (after a week in Italy, several months in Paris, and obsessive ice-cream eating everywhere I travel)! Havre Aux Glaces has incredibly inventive flavors, including masala chai, fig, pear and cider, ginger, strawberry with black pepper, etc. etc. I suggest sampling a bunch until you find one you love. They also mix the flavors and have ice cream cakes. We mixed a poire et cidre with gingembre and it was absolutely incredible! The pear gelato manages to capture the essence of pear, including a perfect Bosc texture, while the ginger really gave you that gingery bite. Definitely worth a stop during your next trip to the Jean-Talon market, or even during your next trip to Montreal!

Yelp
What to do when Kem Coba is closed... find somewhere better !!!! Havre is everything Kem Coba can never be, for now at least. Firstly it has a proper schedule that isn't affected but the weather or the mood of the owner and it is open until 10pm. Secondly, it has creative new flavours at reasonable prices. So you can actually get two scoops and a decent amount of ice cream for under 10$. Lastly, and this is a big one, the people that work at Havre know their stuff and offer amazing advice. The whole concept is to mix and match flavours in order to get new creations of ice cream goodness unique to your pallet. You have time to taste 3 or 4 flavours and the staff always offers suggestions of what flavours to mix together. I always believe that people make restaurants and well ice-cream parlours. As good as your product is, if it isn't presented to the customer properly it won't leave a lasting impression. Havre definitely left a lasting impression and I will be back many many more times!

Yelp
Is this the best ice cream ever? Yes. Intense flavor. Light on the palate. Good cones. Good flavor combinations. Better than Jeni's of Columbus, OH, which was my former personal standard bearer. Even the sorbet is terrific. There is really nothing else to say.

Tara N.

Yelp
The gelato is good, I got the dulce de leche flavor and it was delicious! But their fruity gelatos/sorbets are too sour. Literally every single one was super sour! Also, the servers were kind of rushing us so we felt obliged to pick our flavor right away.

Ali S.

Yelp
The ice cream was amazing. I suggest pistachio or Nutella. I cooled me down on this warm day.

Trace G.

Yelp
You MUST stop here if you are in the Jean Talon market. I had the Masala Chai ice cream and Matcha sorbet in a medium cup. Now that I think about it, I should have gotten the large. The flavours are strong and well infused. I'm not sure how they do it, but they were able to mix the two flavours and create a little pretty flower to top off the treat.
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
Favourite ice cream in the city, no questions asked. My favourite flavours include the dulce Di leche and the dark chocolate. Fun fact: during the summer they stay open after the market closes down so you can enjoy their ice cream even after the sun goes down!

S A.

Yelp
Coconut and pistachio are to die for! I have been coming to this place since 2006 and love it. Service was warm and fast the girl was very pleasant.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
We have some spectacular ice cream in Montreal but I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is the best in the multiverse. Get the "erable brulé" yes that's burnt maple. Eat it slowly while thinking about your life, and how great it is to alive and to have taste receptors. When you get to the crunchy toffee soft nutty INSANITY send me a little thank you note with your mind. Also: the dark chocolate. There are no words. 6$ for a pint.
google avatar

Emeline V.

Yelp
To me Bilboquet is simply the GOD of ice cream in Montreal, but Havre aux Glaces (Ice cream's Haven) comes close, pre--tty close. The shop is squeezed between a cheese shop and a sandwich stand, but you probably won't miss it thanks to the mile-long queue in front. The shop is cramped but pretty and colorful. I was pleasantly surprised by the easy-going and friendly service. Another surprise is their flavors. Now that every other shop sells lemon and matcha ice cream, ice cream parlours have to constantly outdo themselves. I found burnt maple, ginger, hazelnut, expresso and 72% cocoa chocolate ice cream. Now I know I NEED to be back to taste that one. Seriously, it is pitch-black with cocoa! Their sorbet selection is generous (my parents favourite was blood-orange). I was totally blown away by how authentic the flavours are, you really taste fruit, and the natural aromas of whatever it is you chose. Their greatest size is around 4$ which is a sufficient quantity to bring along with you on your discovery of Jean-Talon market. I knocked a star off because they don't have that much choice in terms of portion sizes or cones which is a crying shame. I would also prefer they had an area where we could sit to eat, but I'm nitpicking..
google avatar

Josephine P.

Yelp
This is a dead tie with Kem Coba. I like Kem Coba for their tart sorbets, but I love this place for their sticky an heavy caramel, chocolate and dairy-based gelatos. The people who work here are cute and quirky authentic hippies. I support that cause. Located right by Atwater Marche, this place is a must see if you are in that area. Life is too short to not indulge in gelato served to you by real deal hippies.

Anne C.

Yelp
This is clearly the best ice cream you can find!!! Tasty, creamy, rich and unexpected flavors are to be found in both marché jean-talon and atwater's havres aux glaces. My personal favorites are dulce de leche, creme brulée a l'érable and blueberry sorbet. give it a try!
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
So I finally broke away from my usual today (dark chocolate) and tried the erable brule after many recommendations and I'm so glad I did! It was bursting with maple flavour and the nougat chunks in it were a very welcome surprise!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
I haven't been to the other gelato places in Montreal but would not hesitate to declare Havre aux Glaces the best in the city. It simply cannot get any better than this. The flavors are intensely concentrated without being overpowering, the pure essence of each flavor delivered in a delectably smooth form. A little on the sweet side, but otherwise, perfection in a cup!

Francisco T.

Yelp
So I used to live in Italy and eat gelato there consantly (that's extra street-cred there, right?) First things first: Havres-Aux-Glaces is *real* no-bullshit gelato, made right there from real ingredients every day. The pistachio flavor comes from *actual*pistachios* and the espresso flavor is made with *real*muthafuckin'*espresso*. You can't cheat and get gelato to taste this way... But the reason to go weak-kneed for this place is only one: Cassis. The Cassis Sorbet they make is - and I don't think this is an exaggeration - THE SINGLE BEST THING ANY HUMAN BEING HAS EVER PREPARED IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. It's just phenomenal - tart and bitter and slippery and sharp and cassis-y and just unreal. They're all great. But the Cassis is superhuman.
google avatar

Mimi C.

Yelp
let us not forget that montreal gets RIDICULOUSLY humid and warm in the summer. which makes perfect sense for havres-aux-glaces to spoon out its incredibly delicious gelato flavors. dense but smooth, the gelato packs so much flavor in each bite. we opted for their green tea and one of their top picks of alcoholic gelato (all beer related). a wonderful treat while walking through jean talon!
google avatar

Hans P.

Yelp
Good smooth sorbet! We'll balanced sweetness to sourness! Awesome! Nice environement!

Bethany K.

Yelp
Havres-aux-Glaces has an array of creative sorbets and gelati, including pear, cassis, and pink grapefruit sorbets the day that I visited. The sorbets are sweetened with restraint, allowing the bitterness of grapefruit and zing of cassis shine through. A lovely treat on a hot day, and one that my friend has obsessed about (and revisited) since we first visited.
