‘The Menu’ and Its Twist Ending, Explained | Eater

"In Mark Mylod’s 2022 film The Menu, an exclusive island fine-dining restaurant run by chef Julian Slowik stages a grotesque, operatic finale in which diners are dressed in marshmallow suits, dusted with graham cracker crumbs and sauces, and asked to pour chocolate over themselves before the chef sets the room ablaze — a darkly theatrical revenge that transforms a tasting menu into human s’mores. The wealthy guests, who paid top dollar for the experience (the film references $1,000 dinners), largely accept their fate, embodying the movie’s critique of culinary elitism and privilege; one outsider, Margot, a sex worker, negotiates a cheeseburger, escapes with half of it in a doggy bag, and watches the restaurant burn while a final ominous clap hints at possible tampering with her survival snack. The director reworked the ending to be more operatic, using the spectacle both as shocking cinema and as a send-up of food snobbery." - Amy McCarthy

Living at The Hawthorn House has been such a great experience! The apartments are clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed. You can tell they really pay attention to the little details that make a place feel like home. The location is perfect if you work or study in the Medical Center, with everything from hospitals to restaurants and shops just a few minutes away. The staff is friendly and responsive, always willing to help with maintenance requests or questions. The community itself feels quiet, safe, and well-kept, and the amenities are a nice bonus, especially the pool and fitness areas.

I’ve had such a great experience living here! Mike is always incredibly helpful, professional, and friendly—he goes above and beyond to make sure residents are taken care of quickly and respectfully. Whether it’s maintenance requests, questions, or just day-to-day interactions, he’s consistently reliable and kind. I also want to give a big shoutout to the rest of the staff—they’re all amazing! Everyone in the office and maintenance team keeps the community running smoothly and makes it a great place to live. It’s rare to find a team this dedicated and welcoming. Thank you all for everything you do!

I moved to the Hawthorne House a few months ago after relocating from Atlanta to San Antonio. Mike at the leasing office was incredibly helpful and went above and beyond to make sure all of my requirements were met during the move. Living here has honestly been such a positive experience. The leasing team is quick to fix anything that comes up, and the monthly community events make it feel warm and welcoming. I had my doubts about moving to a new state, but I’m so glad I chose Hawthorne House. It’s been a smooth transition, and I truly feel at home here

Mike is hands down one of the best leasing agents I’ve ever worked with! He’s super friendly, patient, and genuinely goes above and beyond to help. He made the entire process smooth and stress-free, answering all my questions and making sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. You can tell he truly cares about the people he works with, not just getting a lease signed. If you’re looking for someone who’s kind, professional, and actually listens — Mike is your guy. Highly recommend!

Hawthorne is perhaps the pinnacle of luxury living in the South Texas Medical Center, and that is in large part thanks to Miguel-Angel (Big Mike) Montemayor! He is always available and eager to help and always has a great attitude and greets everybody with a warm hello. Thank you Miguel for everything you do. Gina, Anna, and Nadynn would be nowhere without you. Be careful whenever you step foot inside the leasing office, though, because you might end up getting lost in his ocean blue eyes or seduced by his angelic voice.

Avoid This Place – Not Worth the Price or the Stress I lived here for two years, and I strongly recommend AVOIDING this place. It’s overpriced and poorly maintained. The hallways are consistently dirty, the elevators smell and are rarely cleaned, and the dog area is a mess—filthy, never cleaned! I also dealt with a roach infestation for months. Management initially didn’t believe me and only offered basic pesticide treatment. It wasn’t until I provided photos showing they were coming through the HVAC unit that they took real action. I couldn’t use my kitchen cabinets for 3–4 months, and to make matters worse, Gina initially tried to blame me and charge me for it. They also towed my car twice from the garage without any notice, while I was out of town! I had to pay a ridiculous amount to get it back, and they offered no explanation other than my “resident parking permit” wasn’t valid! Now they’re charging me nearly $500 after my moving out, for normal “wear and tear”, carpet cleaning “which should be routine” in addition to regular cleaning. Plus 150$ for supposed “items left out” near the trash and recycle room, which is always locked and inaccessible! Management changed during my time here, and the new team is a major downgrade! Gina is rude, unhelpful, and constantly redirects you to the manager instead of resolving issues. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere!

Miya and Anna were excellent associates to work with at Hawthorne House. They provided wonderful tours of the complex, always had answers to my questions, and were enthusiastic to help me with onboarding tasks and leasing requirements. Their enthusiasm alone was a big part of me choosing to move to this complex. They provided me with updates throughout the process and followed up me with at every step. Very unlike my previous apartment who did not help me when encountering issues. The apartment I moved into was without any issues. Beautiful floor plan and amenities. Noise is not an issue and the residents here seem very happy, many of them working professionals in the med center. I am SO happy I moved here to be closer to work and I feel very safe with the garage gate and fob system at the doors.

Yelp
Been living here for almost a year and every couple months they have new problems. The doors were broken for months so homeless people off the streets could walk in. They do not have security cameras in the complex despite cars being broken into, and apartments being entered by the homeless. About twice a month they will just shut off the water without warning for "emergency repair" and numerous residents have been towed from their own apartment complex. The site manager is dismissive and non-apologetic for the issues. I would move out if it weren't located so close to work. Easy improvements are to stop towing the residents, stop turning off their water and make it a safe place to live.

Yelp
After three years of living here, the complex has been owned by three management companies. We will be leaving as soon as our lease is up. Otherwise, it's a $2000 fee to break the lease. The current company hasn't improved the state of the complex; arguably it has gone down hill. People living here don't respect neighbors (stealing packages, leaving their dog's poop on the floor in the hallways, speeding through the garage). Also, it's truly difficult to get packages. As of 11/22/2021, I was informed that the office doesn't receive packages (although they did in the past). P.S. Unfortunately, the 3rd company that took over fired EVERYONE that was previously working in the front office. Not sure why (that didn't happen with the first transfer of the complex).
