‘The Menu’ and Its Twist Ending, Explained | Eater

"In Mark Mylod’s 2022 film The Menu, an exclusive island fine-dining restaurant run by chef Julian Slowik stages a grotesque, operatic finale in which diners are dressed in marshmallow suits, dusted with graham cracker crumbs and sauces, and asked to pour chocolate over themselves before the chef sets the room ablaze — a darkly theatrical revenge that transforms a tasting menu into human s’mores. The wealthy guests, who paid top dollar for the experience (the film references $1,000 dinners), largely accept their fate, embodying the movie’s critique of culinary elitism and privilege; one outsider, Margot, a sex worker, negotiates a cheeseburger, escapes with half of it in a doggy bag, and watches the restaurant burn while a final ominous clap hints at possible tampering with her survival snack. The director reworked the ending to be more operatic, using the spectacle both as shocking cinema and as a send-up of food snobbery." - Amy McCarthy

Gina Garcia has been so helpful during my stay at Hawthorne. She regularly ensures packages are delivered to my apartment, helps with guests access, and is always promptly attentive to any concerns I have. From the moment she gave me the tour of the apartment, she was welcoming and knowledgeable. She has truly been an amazing part of living at Hawthorne House. Additionally, Hawthorne’s amazing amenities such as the gym, pool, and elevated ceilings really make this complex somewhere I would love to stay at for years.

Miya and Anna were excellent associates to work with at Hawthorne House. They provided wonderful tours of the complex, always had answers to my questions, and were enthusiastic to help me with onboarding tasks and leasing requirements. Their enthusiasm alone was a big part of me choosing to move to this complex. They provided me with updates throughout the process and followed up me with at every step. Very unlike my previous apartment who did not help me when encountering issues. The apartment I moved into was without any issues. Beautiful floor plan and amenities. Noise is not an issue and the residents here seem very happy, many of them working professionals in the med center. I am SO happy I moved here to be closer to work and I feel very safe with the garage gate and fob system at the doors.

Avoid This Place – Not Worth the Price or the Stress I lived here for two years, and I strongly recommend AVOIDING this place. It’s overpriced and poorly maintained. The hallways are consistently dirty, the elevators smell and are rarely cleaned, and the dog area is a mess—filthy, never cleaned! I also dealt with a roach infestation for months. Management initially didn’t believe me and only offered basic pesticide treatment. It wasn’t until I provided photos showing they were coming through the HVAC unit that they took real action. I couldn’t use my kitchen cabinets for 3–4 months, and to make matters worse, Gina initially tried to blame me and charge me for it. They also towed my car twice from the garage without any notice, while I was out of town! I had to pay a ridiculous amount to get it back, and they offered no explanation other than my “resident parking permit” wasn’t valid! Now they’re charging me nearly $500 after my moving out, for normal “wear and tear”, carpet cleaning “which should be routine” in addition to regular cleaning. Plus 150$ for supposed “items left out” near the trash and recycle room, which is always locked and inaccessible! Management changed during my time here, and the new team is a major downgrade! Gina is rude, unhelpful, and constantly redirects you to the manager instead of resolving issues. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere!

Warning future tenants!!! I strongly suggest to not live here. This is our third burglary at this apartment complex. The management here is horrible. They have changed three times management because they are not able to do their job correctly. They have gone through a new security system in the building and it is supposed to be a gated secure community but in fact it is not. Ourselves and other tenants here have been victims of burglaries. To top it off one of our storages was broken into and items were stolen. Although we have insurance coverage, the management here could care less about your things broken into or stolen. All they say is you can make a police report but we don't need anything in file. Therefore, they are just here to earn their money and not do their job correctly and that speaks volumes to their so-called professionalism. This community does not even deserve a one star, but because it is important for the public to know before they consider living here, people deserve to know the reality of this place. Management could care less if you are a medical student or a resident doing their medical schooling across the street. I strongly recommend not to live here. This makes sense why tenants are always moving out. Since January of 2023, all things here have gone down the hill as in ongoing criminal activity. And lastly, I know management is going to read this message. Do not waste your time replying because you just want to look good on the website, internet whatever you want to call it social media. Quit lying to your future tenants!!! Do not reside here!

I left my car for couple of weeks in my friends covered parking lot while I was out of country and after returning back I saw fender damage and needed to replace and a bolt was missing. Ps: I was a resident for couple of months with valid parking sticker. Cannot trust this place on safety.

A relatively good experience except for the fact that the gate is now always broken, and a good number of us have had our cars broken into (My truck has been broken into twice over the course of 2.5 weeks, I do not keep anything of value in my vehicle). The Brivo control access system has caused residents nothing but issues, and it is difficult for management to get ahold of the technicians who are qualified to work on the system. At this price point, it is shocking that this is the only luxury apartment complex that has trouble with continuous break-ins in the medical center (acquaintances in my cohort who also live in the medical center have never had these issues, some have lived here a number of years and were shocked). This should not be happening at this price point, management is well aware of the issue, and has yet to act on it. The first floor is the only floor with cameras, of course floors 2-5 are having issues with break-ins. This would be less of an occurrence if management would properly and promptly address the gate issue as it tends to break every few days, leaving floors 2-5 easily accessible. Fixing the gate would prevent uncontrolled access to floors 2-5 as leaving the gate wide open accrues additional costs for residents, and encourages break-ins (I've spent over $400 on vehicle repairs the past 2.5 weeks). Many of us appreciate the controlled access we pay for. Some residents I've spoken with would appreciate cameras on other floors as it is very difficult to find parking on the first floor. Please be aware of this if you decide to live at Hawthorne House, the lack of reliable security has been an ongoing issue since I moved here almost 2 years ago.

RENTER BEWARE!!! PLEASE READ BEFORE SIGNING A LEASE WITH THIS COMPLEX: (((As of: 03/2025))) Hawthorne House has beautiful amenities and well-kept grounds, but the management is a NIGHTMARE. My unit was filthy and unfinished at move-in, with broken appliances and electrical issues that were never properly addressed or fixed. Security is NONEXISTENT—the gate into the parking garage is always broken and open, cars get routinely broken into, and homeless people wander in and camp in office bathrooms. Complete water shut-offs for the entire day happened regularly without notice, and my unit suffered serious water damage from my upstairs neighbors that was completely ignored by management. Other times, when I went into the office to express my concern with the lack of parking spots in the parking garage due to non-residents parking in resident spots, the manager told me that if I was displeased with the parking situation my two choices were to either pay $75 extra a month to get a reserved parking spot or park illegally at the Bank of America and risk getting my car towed. This conversation with management took place after I had already been towed from Hawthorne's property (of which I had to pay $245 to resolve) because the management neglected to inform me that a parking permit was necessary or give me a parking permit upon move-in. This exemplifies the unprofessional manner in which Kairoi Residential and Hawthorne's on-site management personnel operates. Management is unresponsive to concerns raised by residents, UNHELPFUL, and tries to nickel-and-dime residents during move-out for issues they ignored during the lease. Since my lease has ended and I have moved out, management has changed my final account statement 3 separate times. When I emailed management inquiring about a time I could come in to discuss the move-out charges, the manager responded, not answering my question, but claiming that she was going to charge me an extra $300 because I had a pet and did not inform them. I had to come in and show her the documentation of my ESA, which I had already provided to previous management (that was fired halfway through my lease) to get the fee waived. Following that, the manager sent me a revised statement with the pet fee waived, then on the same day, sent me ANOTHER revised final statement claiming that the original paint charge on the final statement was too low and they would be increasing the repainting charges by almost $300. This inflated repainting cost is due to the aforementioned water damage caused by the upstairs neighbors that was never addressed by management, regardless of the numerous maintenance requests I submitted to have it fixed during my lease. It really is a shame because the property and units are beautiful but the lack of security and terrible management spoils everything you could possibly enjoy about the complex. For a “luxury apartment” that charges luxury rent prices, this place is absolutely NOT WORTH THE MONEY. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. EDIT: As you can see by the management's response to my very honest/detailed review, they are still denying that they increased the repainting charges due to the water damage caused by the upstair neighbors, even though the assistant manager Gina Garcia confirmed to my roommate on the phone that the water damage WAS the reason for the increased charge. Kairoi Residential truly is the worst management company that I've ever dealt with in my entire life. Y'all beware if you are thinking of renting here.

I've lived at Hawthorne House for a year, and I couldn't be happier with my choice! The location is perfect, and the complex itself is beautiful. The amenities are top-notch, and the maintenance team is incredibly responsive and efficient. The management has truly made living here a pleasure, always going above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend Hawthorne House to anyone looking for a fantastic place to call home.

Yelp
Been living here for almost a year and every couple months they have new problems. The doors were broken for months so homeless people off the streets could walk in. They do not have security cameras in the complex despite cars being broken into, and apartments being entered by the homeless. About twice a month they will just shut off the water without warning for "emergency repair" and numerous residents have been towed from their own apartment complex. The site manager is dismissive and non-apologetic for the issues. I would move out if it weren't located so close to work. Easy improvements are to stop towing the residents, stop turning off their water and make it a safe place to live.

Yelp
After three years of living here, the complex has been owned by three management companies. We will be leaving as soon as our lease is up. Otherwise, it's a $2000 fee to break the lease. The current company hasn't improved the state of the complex; arguably it has gone down hill. People living here don't respect neighbors (stealing packages, leaving their dog's poop on the floor in the hallways, speeding through the garage). Also, it's truly difficult to get packages. As of 11/22/2021, I was informed that the office doesn't receive packages (although they did in the past). P.S. Unfortunately, the 3rd company that took over fired EVERYONE that was previously working in the front office. Not sure why (that didn't happen with the first transfer of the complex).
