Where to Eat and Drink in Brightwood

"This Sal-Mex restaurant is the place to hang with margaritas and beef fajitas. It’s also a popular place to hear live, local music or belt out a few karaoke tunes." - Tim Ebner

This is a great Happy hour spot, the food is dynamic you have a choice to Dine- in or carry- out 😋🍚🌯🍸. But anyway I do apologize for the photo(that's my carry out option) but go check it out. I can't speak for for you I'll just let the food do that. Until then Chee you lata@!!

The service was so amazing! I came here with my boyfriend. We were attended very quickly, which is so nice. Once we had ordered we got our food in less than 10mins which was a bonus! I got steak & shrimp fajitas and they were sizzling, juicy, and tender. My boyfriend got chicken fajitas, says the chicken was so juicy, and freakin good. DEFINITELY coming back again. You have to to come & enjoy a meal here. Felt very homey, a great experience overall.

Haydee’s restaurant on Georgia ave was amazing, nothing too crazy but the food was amazing. We came in on karaoke night and the vibe was very nice. Met the owner of the restaurant very friendly and humble woman. Service was topnotch.

I didn't order any food but my margarita was good. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. The waitress was very nice and attentive. Karaoke was super fun!

Went there with a group of friends late at night, when almost all other restaurants in the area were closed. The service was friendly and fast, and the food was tasty. They had great music playing and the ambiance was nice. Would definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
This place is the epitome of trash. I question why it's still open. People come here to drink not eat. I came in for a quick bite because I was in the area. We were the only customers and got served spoiled salsa. I asked my daughters if they wanted to leave but they were so hungry and decided to stay. The tables were sticky as if the same rag is used every night on all tables. Then we get our food. Guac looked like it was made 2-3 days ago, pico de gallo looked very sad and this looked like can beans. Stay away from this place. The only thing fresh was a beer I ordered.

Yelp
I came here looking for a quick bite as I was working next door. You walk in this place and it resembles a old western bar or if you are Hispanic una chupadera. I still went ahead and looked at the menu and I asked the waitress what she recommended. She said they are really known for their wings. I asked for them but $16.50 for 12 wings is expensive and when I tell you these wings were just regular wings with hot sauce on top. I wouldn't recommend the wings. Maybe something else. The fries were great tho! And my order came with chips and salsa.

Yelp
I love this place. It's walking distance from my house and a great after work spot. The staff is very friendly and the food is great. Very authentic Mexican cuisine. I usually get the appetizer platter. It's about $15. And comes with a little bit of every thing. I'm not big on margaritas, but they do make a mean old fashion. If you're ever in the area, drop by. It's worth it.

Yelp
My go to for a late night meal. Always fresh! Average wait time. Anything with steak is love!

Yelp
Food was soooo good. More than I could finish and the Margaritas snuck up on us. $5 per maragrita is unbeleivable and 'well made'. :-)

Yelp
I called to order nachos with extra queso for pickup and pictured above is what I received. This is not queso, which is melted cheese dip/sauce and chili peppers. This is shredded Mexican cheese that's been microwaved on tortilla chips, which made the chips flimsy. If a Mexican restaurant can't get an order as simple as nachos correct, then the rest of the menu is not worth trying, in my opinion.

Yelp
Review for 3/9/2014 My sister and I decided to have aSunday lunch. Since we had a living social deal, we came to Haydee's. The outside looks like a "hole-in- the- wall", but when we walked into the restaurant, we noticed that there was a lot going on. TV's, a jukebox in the back, a bar lit with Christmas lights, painting all over, and wooden benches. Immediately, our server escorted us to our seats. She quickly brought us water and menus. We ordered the fiesta margarita, and it was strong. We are talking about "knock-you-on-your-butt" strong. For appetizers, I had a cheese pupusa and my sister ordered a pork and cheese pupusa. I loved the sauce that they came with. I HATED the salsa. Although I love onions, the salsa had way too much. I preferred to use the pupusa sauce with my chips. For lunch, I order the veggie enchiladas. The broccoli, carrots, and onions were cooked and seasoned perfectly in the enchiladas. I have never had enchiladas with broccoli, and Haydee's has set a new standard for me and veggie enchiladas. The pinto beans and rice were okay nothing special. My sister order the combo quesadilla, and she LOVED them. She vowed to return for the quesadillas. The restroom is clean, but it deserves a star deducted. Patrons must put the used toilet paper in the trash instead of flushing it. That is disgusting to me. The trash can didn't have a lid... The restaurant and food was a solid four star, but a star was deducted for the restroom. So why is this five stars? Glad you asked :-) The peach fiesta margarita was perfect. It was the perfect compliment to the food. In addition to the good margaritas, the server and bartender were sweethearts. The real star was the server's son, who wasn't older than 6. He sang every song that the bartender put on the jukebox. He was so lively. His energy was infectious. Truly, he made my day with his singing and dancing. I look forward to coming back and trying the fajitas and other menu items. Overall, Haydee's is a restaurant that I would recommend trying. Don't come in expecting anything... This place is the perfect place to start off an evening of fun.

Yelp
Disgusting! I ordered wings and fries for pick up. The wings were disgusting. The wings tasted like they were re-fried, meaning reused. The wings were so dry and fried up. The wings wasn't fresh. I've never had disgusting wings except for now. Taste your food before picking up.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood Tex mex restaurant. Carmen is the bartender for this place and makes great drinks. If you like homemade food then to will like this place. Nothing special on the inside but it is clean and service is great

Yelp
The food here is always good. I get the half chicken half steak fajitas burrito. The place is family owned I think and it's a lot of space inside. There's an upstairs and downstairs. They always have a drink special menu. The service is ok, I walked in and no one greeted me but I chalk that to the language barrier. I come here usually on weekdays or nights so I'm not sure how the night life is but I assume jumpin considering its on Georgia ave.

Yelp
Been here a few times now and I really want to like it but the food is just not very good quality. The wings were particularly awful

Yelp
I love Haydees! OK, so when you open the beautifully carves doors you too will discover why, I took off one star for ambiance it's - uh... But let me tell you, when the food hits your mouth? An experience definitely worth repeating!! That's why I did, the next day - with my mother. Yes I did Yelpers. After telling my mother of this place of unexpected provocative culinary delights, her taste buds were also aroused with curiosity. There was SHRIMP you say? And STEAK? In a sizzling fajita? And fresh veggies? (Well yeah Mom, there's also a Tuesday's down the street.) But for some reason this woman who had been exhausted all weekend the next evening suddenly leaped from her bed to eat at a restaurant she'd never even heard of before. It was back to the printer for another Groupon and a quick trip back down to Hadee's. Upon our arrival it was, "Yes, my friend, my usual table by the bathroom (One of the only four available)! Just keep the home made nachos commin!!" Another customer put on some oldies, but goodies on the juke box, which we all sang along too (even my mother - who was this woman?) and like the night before we supped on well seasoned meats and downed well mixed drinks and cheap, but smooth wines. Dinner was well priced (even before the Groupon). My mom, a very picky eater even says she'll be back and the both of us left all smiles. Thank you Hadee's for the fun and the bonding - two nights in a row!!

Yelp
The food at Haydee's is good. The rice had especially good flavor, and however they did the guacamole it fit very well with my meal and I ate every bite for once. (I don't generally like guacamole so rarely eat it unless it's made fresh in front of me, which means I have no idea if this was fresh or not. It didn't seem freshly made based on my very limited experience -- too creamy, compared to the rare times I know it's been freshly made -- but it worked for me.) The entrees are chock full of ingredients and flavor, plus there're a few types of hot sauce on each table with which to add kick if you'd like. The margarita I had was . . . a margarita; nothing particularly standout, although it was the "Cadillac Margarita". Haydee's is a huge place -- much bigger than I expected, with at least two floors and possibly a basement room as well. The space is filled with art from assorted (I think) Latin American cultures, and strategically placed colored lights provide additional character. The staff is friendly, and was efficient until the end, when our waitress disappeared for a while when we were ready to ask for the check. In general it's a good place. I'd really like to see it when it's lively, with more than just a couple tables on the main floor occupied.

Yelp
An outpost of the original Haydee's in Mt. Pleasant spread out over three floors (basement, main floor and interior balcony) with a small bar and festive decor. Good margarita's and better than average Mexican/Salvadoran Cuisine. A nice addition to the Brightwood/Manor Park area, and certainly more accesible to the the average gringo than Serengeti across the street. They recently changed their license from restaurant to tavern with an entertainment endorsement for live music, so I'm not sure how that's going to play out.

Yelp
The best Mexican food I've ever had. I always refer people to this business. I love Carmen and her sister Haydees.

Yelp
Small but fun atmosphere. Nice bar. Waitstaff was great. Delicious fajitas. Looks a little dive-y from the outside but we found it clean and pleasant. Parking on street right in front of restaurant. 2 entrees, free chips and fresh salsa, a soda and 2 beers for under 40 bucks. I had plenty of fajitas leftover to bring home.

Yelp
Service is good, drinks are cheap, my only problems is that their food isn't good to me.... I have tried their quesadillas and they are very bland and I had something else with shrimp and that wasn't good either.... I prob won't eat there except the wings which are ok .... i go there because its across the street from my house....aka the closest bar to my bedroom.....but i try to eat before i go in....

Yelp
This place is terrible. I don't even know how they past health inspections. The chips are left out all day to sit under a light. They are stale. And gross. The salsa tasted off. Was not good at all. Like it also sat out all day. The food is not tasty at all. Under seasoned and a big goopy mess. Even the rice looked like it was from a steam bags you get in the frozen section at giant. Do not waste your time and money here. I also ended up getting really bad food poisoning. I came here with a living social deal. They saw that I had it and hyped up the price on each item. Beware!

Yelp
Good Salvadoran and Mexican food at fair prices. A bit dive-y but makes it feel authentic. About alcohol, I know there are potent potables available including but not limited to margaritas and beer. I doubt there's wine, and I can't recall if there is a full-service bar.

Ju L.

Yelp
Pros: Authentic food at a great price and in large portion sizes. Attentive waitstaff, but expect a language barrier. Empty on week nights. Cons: N/A
google avatar

Lee M.

Yelp
Good food and the prices are good for the food but alcohol prices are pretty steep. I eat here pretty often and would recommend coming here. The salsa and chips are awesome. My favorite is the fajita burrito

Yelp
For starters, getting here was pretty easy. I drove so I can't speak to how metro rail or bus accessible it is. Parking wasn't difficult, there is tons of metered parking on the street, but a few side streets and neighborhoods you could find parking on with little effort if you're only going to be there for a little while. I almost missed the sign, so pay attention to the addresses when you look for it. Also note, they almost always have a groupon deal going so be sure to look for it. The decor inside always makes me laugh a little bit, but whatever I didn't come here for ambiance I came for good food and that they do provide. I mean who cares what they store the chips and salsa in, or that the bar looks like Christmas. The downstairs area is small, but usually seating isn't an issue. I think they have events upstairs often. Warning, do not get the table against the wall under the vent. Sometimes condensation falls directly from the vent on to the table in the summer months when the AC is on. The wait staff is friendly so is management. The steak fajitas were great and large portion size for a low price. I also got the shredded beef burrito, eh skip that and make it steak burrito next time. The chicken enchiladas were also good. I would return here. Didn't visit the restroom.

Yelp
If your in the area and want good Salvadoran and Mexican fair this is a good place. Its prices are economical the beers can be a bit on the hey more than I usually pay but ok. I like the Fajitas and I really just order the garlic parmesean wings. I play in one of the bands on Fridays and I wouldnt have known about it unless we had a gigg. But pretty good atmosphere on Friday nights. The crowd can get rowdy as they allow local bands to play in the venue. Has a upstairs bar with good seating and a outside balcony that is upstairs for the smokers. All in all I would only go back if I had to play there again. But if in the area I might stop through for a beer or two. Pretty diverse crowds for the happy hour but at night its a spot for the live band followers of the city.

Yelp
Good fajitas. Pretty cheap, somewhere around ten per person for fajitas. We will be back. The music is a bit loud though, seriously guys, it's a Tuesday night, turn it down a bit!
google avatar

Pat G.

Yelp
The food here is pretty darned good! The staff, friendly. The Margarita (top of the line), was only so-so. I will go back for the food and probably order a Dos Equis!
google avatar

Evan K.

Yelp
Awesome food!! The prices here at Haydee's is reasonable for the good portions of food you get. Live music is a definite bonus, as it gives the restaurant a great atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, check out the cool stuff lining the walls! You'll spend at least an hour looking around, and talking about what everything might be and where it could come from. Bring your friends and family by and have an experience everyone will talk about for the next few days.

Maiera M.

Yelp
This place. Is awesome! The one and only reason I don't give 5 stars to the place is because it's difficult to ask anything unless you speak Spanish... And I don't haha so I it was a little difficult with my diet. And it's kinda hard to find parking. BUT other than that this place is great! The places itself is lovely, seriously. We were greeted quickly and nicely and sat immediately and got out drinks quick. I got the tilapia and it was seriously amazeballs. And I don't even like that word. It was cooked perfectly and soft and moist inside served with a lemon that just melts the fish into butter (cooked without butter btw). Got with two sides of the mixed veg and that was even good. My date got steak fajitas a and they too were amazing. He says it was savory and the perfect texture. If you are in the neighborhood, come by. You won't regret it. They do serve vegetarians options and alcohol/beer/mixed drinks.

Yelp
See my review of the Mt. Pleasant location. I was so happy to find that the food and menu are just as good as Mt.P's. Extra happy that it's only 2 blocks away from my house.

Yelp
Good Latin food, prices our reasonable and portions our good. Nightlife on weekends can get rowdy and loud. Kids would be OK for lunch and weekday dinner I would not recommend for weekend dinner.

Stuart S.

Yelp
Ga. Ave. location: Attractive venu, nice service, generous portions, and the best Chicken Chimichanga I have ever tasted. And good prices. Call to see if they're having a live BAND-good music but LOUD!

Salami S.

Yelp
Haydee's has to be the worst place in DC for Mexican food. We went on Sept. 21, 2013. Stale chips, canned salsa were signs that things were not going to be good. The ginger ale was flat and tasted like syrup. The vegetable quesadilla had soggy old carrots, the broccoli was still cold (obviously frozen to begin with). cheese the taste and texture of Velveeta. The tortillas were also stale and had been fried too long. The shiny, textured guacamole was made from a mix. C'mon, you can't at least make fresh guacamole? The meat in the combo quesadilla had no taste. The frozen shrimp was obnoxious. The jukebox plays loud and terrible hiphop music while the house stereo plays loud Latin music. I wish I could give no stars, but I can't. Please avoid Haydee's; life is too short for bad food.

Michael R.

Yelp
The restaurant and was okay the food was excellent but the restaurant like a holes in the wall It's like Christmas exploded in the restaurant very nice staff.

Stephen M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here. Mexican made steak, the best I have ever eaten. Brought steaming hot. Their side dish was amazing. Only if I am able to describe exactly what it was! The wait was not long and their price was quite affordable. Highly recommended !!!

Alex J.

Yelp
Good Salvadorian food. We came on a weekend night once and there was a mariachi band playing as well. I prefer the fajitas...If you come during happy hour times there are beer specials and I think there was a margarita special as well. Big menu selection. Quiet.

Bonnie G.

Yelp
The food here is great. It is well seasoned and in good portions. The chips seemed a bit stale but I don't care about the chips when the food is that good. The one on Georgia ave. is never crowded. Staff is attentive.Check it out for some good, filling food.

Miss N.

Yelp
If I could give this place a -5 I would, unfortunately the lowest rank is 1 which is too high for this place. I ordered a steak taco salad to go over the phone where I repeated the order twice to a lady before I got transferred to someone else. I finally got home and I quickly dived into my salad. The cucumber bits were bitter and the steak had a weird taste. Needless to say I should have tossed it or returned the salad but I ate some. Shortly after I felt really sick and threw away particularly the whole salad that was left. The next day I called the manager and she said no one else got sick and to call back in 10minutes. With no concern of how I felt or how they could fix the situation she just repeated to call back. I didn't call back because of the disgust I felt both physically and emotionally. I just write this warning, DONT GO TO HAYDESS make it yourself, get a frozen entree, even Mcdonalds would be better. Now that's really saying something!
