I got a mail ordered Russian cake for my birthday. My main motivation for getting it was that when visiting relatives in NO when I was a child, my aunt's boyfriend happened to have a slice of Russian cake and broke off a chunk for me. I remembered it being very rich, dense, and tasty, but I had largely forgotten about it until researching it online and finally rediscovering Russian cake aka Creole Trifle.
It arrived in good condition, still cold, double-wrapped in plastic, topped with a cold pack, and protected by styrofoam and a sturdy box. I of course decided to try some immediately upon arrival. Hoo boy, I broke off a slice and dug in. As I remember, it's a very dense and sweet cake. The exact flavor was hard to pinpoint. I know that it's a blend of different cakes with jam and rum flavoring as binders. The cumulative flavor made me think of Kool-Aid mixed with bubblegum.
To be honest, it was initially a bit too sweet and heavy for me and I couldn't imagine myself finishing the whole thing. Since then I have tried eating much smaller slices, treating it more like a cheesecake as opposed to a regular cake. Doing that, I've found it way more enjoyable. I have nothing to compare it to, so I can't really say it's good or bad in comparison to the chunk I had so many years back. For what it's worth, I'm giving a 3 star rating for it being unique and because there were no hitches with the ordering and shipping.
There is a lot of publicity for the King cake so I may have to try that in the future, but d/t prices with shipping ($60 for the Russian cake) it may be a while.
