Even More Hummus and Pita Coming to Denver in 2019 | Eater Denver

"Opened late in 2018 and located in Platt Park, this neighborhood bar doubles as a creative hub that displays and sells local art and offers take-home art kits. Patrons are encouraged to bring supplies and work on art while enjoying alcoholic drinks, and the venue plans monthly classes for community members. The owners, Tori and Tom Schumacher, aimed to create a whimsical, artistic energy for Old South Pearl, and the business is the newest addition on a corridor that saw multiple restaurants, cafes, and bakeries open last year." - Josie Sexton

Was wondering down in the Pearl area on a Thursday evening and stopped in for the first time. Wasn’t very crowded which is always a little worrisome in Denver but me and my daughter both ordered an Espresso Martini. We have been keeping a list and rating them all over town and told the friendly bartender! He told us this would be the best we had. He was pretty spot on. We both rated the drink a 9/10. We sat outside on the small patio and really had an amazing time. Loved everything about this spot and will go back!

Google
This place is super cute and I have had some good experiences here before, but my most recent visit was pretty bad. The bartender was clearly not sober and was moving exceptionally slow. He was chatting with friends at the bar while a long line of customers formed. When we finally were able to order I was given the wrong drink. When I asked for a new one, he took my original drink and started to drink it himself, and then didn’t remake it for over 20 minutes only after I reminded him. When he finally made the drink I ordered it tasted awful.

Google
I really enjoy this bar but a recent experience has left a bad taste. There is a tall bartender whom ignored the entire bar so he can chat with two girls at the bar top for over 45 minutes. There was another male bartender there as well (Andy) and he was obviously flustered due to his “teammate” not helping him one bit. He was incredibly rude to two of my friends and the girls were visibly upset! Most people were waiting 30min for a single drink. Absolutely ridiculous!! Stop getting drunk in the job. This bartender is a bad look for Hazel and I will not be returning if he is there. Owners can feel free to reach out to me and discuss further details of his actions.

Google
Amazing cocktails and service. The bartenders are true mixologists and I’ve had some of the best cocktails in Denver at Hazel. Don’t miss it!

Google
We love going to Hazel for an after work cocktail. The art work and support of local artists make it a special place. The staff are knowledgeable and make a great Old Fashioned!

John K.

Google
Hazel was great. Really good drinks, very fairly priced. All the art surrounding you while having a few drinks was great. Really enjoyed the sheets on the table you could draw on. This is my first time in this part of town, so like always it was important to check out the bathroom mirror quality. They were great, a nice bonus is that the bathrooms had two mirrors. You know what they say, double the mirrors, double the selfies, double the intastories.

Google
I like this spot but the curly haired male bartender has got to go. Owners of this establishment - note that nearly all the negative reviews on your page involve an interaction with him and take action! Calling him arrogant and smug is an understatement. You are in a customer facing role that rewards hospitality, treat your customers with respect and kindness! You are losing returning customers and I will not be recommending this place to others until I no longer see him behind the bar.

Liza P.

Google
Delicious drinks. Fun to watch the talented bar man make them. Lovely area to sit outside and watch people pass by. They have coloring books and games! Great spot to chill. Lovely area all around.

Yelp
Lovely friendly staff, and interesting drink Options, in a great location. They also have a very welcoming outdoor patio.

Yelp
My husband and I were strolling Pearl street for an impromptu "Valentine's Eve" since we both work Valentine's Day, and spotted Hazel next to one of our other favorite spots and I'm so glad we decided to stop in! The atmosphere is elevated artsy. There are upholstered seats and high tops, which ever is more your speed. I was not drinking this evening, and asked about non alcoholic selections. The bartender, O, was very courteous and knowledgeable. Hazel has a full bar of non- alcoholic spirits as well and O was able to modify the drinks that caught my eye. I had an espresso martini that was fantastic! The drink mixing is also part of the experience as the smoked coffee beans not only added an extra dimension to the flavor, but was also fun to watch. 10/10 I will be back soon and try something from the regular menu!

Yelp
Great cocktails and you can't beat the $7 Happy Hour. Our must stop when on S Pearl Street. Service is decent but kind of aloof both times we have been. Three middle aged old ladies aren't hip enough for more than monosyllabic responses lol

Yelp
A small artists bar on Pearl street that has chill vibes and friendly bar staff. It is not big and had some decent drink specials to take advantage of as well. They have adult coloring books for you to use while you are enjoying your libations too. The walls are covered with art that is for sale from local artists and the prices on their drinks are fair.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Honestly - between the prices and the slower service here, it's not my favorite! A mocktail will run you about the same as a cocktail, it will take you 30 mins to get a drink, and the cute ambiance isn't worth it to me when there's better elsewhere. That said, the drinks are good (they should be what you pay for them!) and the bartenders are knowledgeable!

Yelp
Fun unique vibe in a great area to boot. Loved the decor and the fact they had coloring books, though most of the pages were already filled in, so if you're really into that I would suggest bringing your own. Bartender was friendly and made some tasty cocktails, price points were decent but not a wild steal. Good variety of options and I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some more, including their zero proof options. As an aside, if you come on a Friday evening during the summer, I'd recommend walking the neighborhood and checking all the local vendors posted up.

Yelp
Walked in with two buddies, place was empty. On the way in I looked at the bar tender and said "hey, how's it going", no response, weird. We sat at the bar and got now attention for several minutes. Final bar tender turns around and growls at us, you guys are going to have to move to the other side of the bar. At this point we left as we felt super in welcome. Went up the street and had a lovely time. Not sure what's going on at hazel, but it was truly the most un hospitable situation I've ever experienced.

Yelp
Really cool cocktail and art bar. Bartender was fantastic and made some great drinks. Loved all of the local art that was up on the walls and in the vending machine.

Yelp
Best bar I've ever been to, and I've been to SOO many bars. Every single night I go to a new bar and this is hands down the best bar experience I've ever had. Our bartender, O , was very personable. Had a great attitude and delivered drinks with a beautiful smile.

Yelp
Fantastic bar! I stopped in on a Friday afternoon and nearly had the place to myself for the first hour. I was impressed with their seasonal cocktail menu - the staff come up with their own creations which the boss lady modifies or approves - and the choices rotate every few months. Really fun stuff, and the FUGI was amazing! Cocktails range from $10 to $14, and they've also got a list of happy hour cocktails for six or seven bucks. The bartender was awesome and seating was great! Plenty of high tops, but they also have a super comfy couch corner in the back. Cheers!

Yelp
Awful service- rude bartender, took forever to make a single drink. As we watched him make others drinks we realized he was touching all the cherries, oranges, limes, etc that go into/on the drinks with his bare hands. Better yet? The drink was not worth the wait... The line continued to grow with people waiting 10+ minutes for a drink/cash out. We will not be coming back here.

Hayley F.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped in to get a night cap here. The place is cute but the bar tender had a headphone in talking to someone on the phone the whole time we were ordering which was weird. Then I asked for a champagne floater on top of a drink that was almost a French 75 which is my favorite drink, it just needed the champagne on top. The bartender at first told me no because it's "a very full drink" and then told me he works hard on the drinks and doesn't make any changes to them. It was awkward and made me feel like I wasn't allowed to order the drink I wanted. The drink I got was also mediocre for $14. For a cocktail bar, I'd suggest allowing minor changes if it makes a customer happy. We unfortunately won't be back.

Yelp
Went for their happy hour and they had amazing drinks. I would recommend this place for a happy hour!

Yelp
Love this place on S Pearl for amazing cocktails and fun vibes! Their signature drink, Hazel, was phenomenal. Knocking off a star because of service--not very great.

Yelp
Great vibe, good happy hour, chill people with some lounge chairs and couches. Cocktails are well balanced.

Yelp
Neat place! I loved that you could color/draw/doodle at the table. Chill vibes for a bar! We enjoyed it here!

Yelp
My fiance and I stopped in at Hazel while waiting for our table at a restaurant down the road. Hazel is a small spot, so we were lucky to be seated at one of the very last tables at the time we popped in on a Friday around 6. The moment we sat down, one of the bartenders came over to ask us what we'd like. We told him we hadn't had time look at the menu yet, but he insisted we didn't need to look at it, but to just tell him what type of drink we were looking for. I told him I wanted a gin drink w/ hints of floral and sweet - but not too sweet, while my fiance wanted a mix between an Old Fashioned and Whisky Sour. Within 5 minutes, the bartender had whipped us our drinks. We tried them and they were very strong, but so delicious! We truly enjoyed every sip. At the same time, we loved the ambiance of the place, as it gave off ra chill, neighborhood vibe w/ a fancy twist. The artwork on the walls provided a flair and extra pop of color and the lighting was dimmed and romantic for our Friday date night. I'd definitely come back here for more delicious cocktails in a unique setting.

Yelp
Tyler's smoked old fashion is incredible. Music and vibe is on point. Will be back for more.

A B.

Yelp
The drinks were fine, the bartender was assh*le. He was bent out of shape because we moved a drink menu from one of the tables, and then gave my friend a hard time when she brought several empty glasses up to the bar. Apparently, you don't bring "dirty dishes" to his sanctuary of a bar...what a joke. For the price, I'll go somewhere else with better cocktails and without the "cool guy" hipster attitude.

Thomas S.

Yelp
Super cool bar. Good vibes and Tyler is an awesome guy that makes really good cocktails. Definitely going to be coming back!

Aimee W.

Yelp
What a cool neighborhood spot, we love it!!! The deck out front is a great way to chill out in the summer. The service is outstanding and Meghan always takes such good care of us! You can't beat the happy hour prices. Cheers and we'll be back soon!

Michelle F.

Yelp
It's ok for the younger crowd that doesn't mind a dark and dingy bar with a very limited beer selection. The front patio is nice for people watching. Not a place I would seek out.
google avatar

Sophie W.

Yelp
Have been coming here for a while and the bartenders are usually a tad rude, but JOSH IS THE BEST!! He was such a sweetie and was so much better than literally anyone else who works there. Definitely a star in my book! Would give a 5/5 if it weren't for the other less appealing staff members. 4/5 is all you Josh!! Thank you so much!
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place on a girls night out! Came here for an after-dinner drink with some friends, and they had something to suit every palate. First of all, the place had a casual, but lively atmosphere. Open garage door, lively bar, lots of tables for seating, and it was healthily packed, but not crazy! Just the right level for a fun neighborhood spot. The bartenders were friendly - and had a great sense of humor! We tried a variety of beers, cocktails, wines - everyone was satisfied! I'll definitely hit this place up again if I'm in the South Pearl neighborhood again soon!

Yelp
Love Hazel but want to highlight my observation pros and cons for this cute spot. Pros: the vibe is super chill, good music, very good drinks, lots of dogs walking by and the most amazing bar toilet paper ever. Cons: service is so slow. Like stand in line behind 2 people for 30+ minutes slow, but could be a pro if that doesn't bother you. Although chill with good music, it's really loud and hard to have an intimate convo despite the vibes for it, the sound travels I like it a lot if you can get beyond the two cons. Good neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Hazel is a new bar that opened in the Platt Park neighborhood. It is a great place to chill with friends and meet new ones. The bar is hip and modern, art amazing, tables complete with coloring accessories, chill ambiance, cool music vibe, and friendly people. This is a cocktail bar, but happens to serve two amazing grilled cheese sandwiches should you require something filling. They also have a refurbished cigarette machine that dispenses $5 art. I purchased an artistic creation from Winston Salem North Carolina. It was made with hand-carved linoleum and real coffee! What a cool souvenir for a super fun night. I was able to sample one of the gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, which was fantastic and really hit the spot. The drinks were flowing and enjoyed by all. In the near future I need to purchase one of the wire sculpture art kits and have some fun getting in touch with my inner Michelangelo. I hope you enjoy a few adult beverages and this unique community art bar as much as me.

Yelp
Red was such a fantastic bartender! His unending supply of energy and enthusiasm was charming, and I definitely loved the drinks he made for us. Hazel has set up adorable greenhouses in the back, each with its own seating options and it's very own space heater to keep you nice and cozy. Absolutely loved it!!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by this cute place on the way to dinner. I ordered the smoke and mirrors and my friend ordered the el ocaso. The activated charcoal blended in so well in my drink and it was so delicious, I had to make a stop after dinner to get another one. The bartenders were friendly and attentive and the vibe was chill and light. I'll definitely be back!

Alli F.

Yelp
This was a cute place! Great happy hour deals and fun little coloring books. They didn't have a kitchen, but they let us bring in food from outside. The pizza place next door had a 45 min wait, so we got quesadillas from the Mexican place next door. Delicious. We had the gin and tonic drink on the happy hour menu and it was great! Dim lighting. It was pretty busy, but not too loud or overwhelming. Nice little pockets throughout the space to hang out.
google avatar

Cameron V.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised. We randomly googled "bar near me", showed up, and had a great time. I only described the type of drink I wanted and they more than delivered. The mixologist here are talented! Period!

Shelby M.

Yelp
Spent the evening here with my date, the atmosphere was pleasing and Tyler was such an amazing attribute to the experience. I tried his smoked old fashion, highly recommend! Ask for Tyler!

Yelp
This used to be our favorite cocktail bar. Recently we were there and witnessed an employee arguing with another. The owner was there and we watched her shove an employee against the back door while yelling at him to leave. Putting your hands on an employee is crossing a line. Last night I went back against my better judgement after a friend insisted we go. The night ended when the bartender called someone a fa*got. I asked him not to use that language because it is rooted in oppression, and he staunchly defended himself and even defended the use of the R word. He then went on to try to mock me, make fun of my appearance, and laugh in my face because I was upset about his actions. Horrible experience, I'd recommend taking your business elsewhere. Replying to your response Tori- slut shaming is way out of style if you missed the memo. I was definitely there that night and saw no aggression besides yelling from all 3 employees present -and the pushing from you. If your employee was aggressive sure defend yourself, but that wasn't the case. I left this review 2 1/2 weeks later due to the insane conversation I had with your bartender the night that I left this review and thought that I would include objective info from both nights. If you are aware of the super inappropriate comments made by your employee I hope he is fired too-there should be no room for bigotry and hatred at your establishment but I'm sure he made up his side of the story. Nothing wrong was done on my end, just sharing my experiences. What a horrible, immature response from a business owner.

Yelp
Cool place. Stopped in for quick drink while waiting on grub up the street. Bartender was surly, not offering options when I was told their one tap was out. Messy table outside that a couple had to bus themselves that sat that way for 20 minutes, and 2 bartenders not very busy. Charged 14 for a gin and tonic when their specialty cocktails were 12. Meh.

Laurel C.

Yelp
this is a great bar, but only if you're white apparently... my partner and I came in and the staff Tyler and the other bartender whom I didn't get a name for totally ignored us, was passive af, rude but yet extremely helpful and enthusiastic to everyone else sitting around us at the bar top. Extremely uncomfortable feeling and we were so excited to check this place out. If you're a person of color, do yourself a favor and don't even bother going in here. It's 2023, get it together and at least pretend to be a bit inclusive. Update to the owner who responded-- you don't get to tell a customer who feels uncomfortable at your establishment not to pull the race card. Completely inappropriate and insensitive response. My partner felt so uncomfortable in your bar, and we came in ready to love it, in fact he was the one who wanted to love it and we were absolutely treated differently than other patrons who got greeted enthusiastically and given free shots to take w bartenders while we waited far too long to order, then got rude and dry responses while ordering like no one wanted to talk to us. DO BETTER, that response was absolute BS.

Gordon H.

Yelp
Douchebag bartender didn't feel like serving half the cocktail menu. Weird guy made it feel like a hostile experience.
google avatar

Francesca Z.

Yelp
Dope. And who doesn't love an Art-O-Mat? I'd say less but Yelp wants more so...you asked.
google avatar

Roger G.

Yelp
This art themed bar is great. They have a cocktail program that has many creative and traditional drinks. I am quite impressed with their whiskey drinks. They have the tables covered with paper for drawing with crayons. They supply adult coloring books for you to draw in. There is also an old cigarette machine in the front which has been filled with fun are crafts and projects. It's a really cool idea. Plus this place sits right on old south Pearl so the location is great. They don't serve food but it seems they let you bring in something you order from somewhere else. FYI Sexi Pizza is right next door. The staff is friendly and the drinks are good in a fun artsy style bar. That's my style...
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Love this spot!! My friend introduced it to me, and I'm so glad she did. The bartenders are so friendly and have such skill with making cocktails. The vibe is down to earth and art gallery vibe but not pretentious. The prices are spot on for great cocktails. You can order food from the places next door and bring it in.

David M.

Yelp
I went in really wanting to like this place. There's so much potential here, but unfortunately the experience we had just didn't live up to that. The drinks were mediocre at best. We tried 3 different cocktails off the menu - one was pretty good, but the other two were rough. Dull flavors and hastily made (which I totally would have understood if it was busy at the time). The service was about as good as the drinks. The drinks were made fast and the bartender was checking in with us regularly, so points for that! But the bartender's tone was very unwelcoming and arrogant. Also, the bartending was just clumsy, with bartenders bumping into each other, making a huge mess on the bartop, and even splashing us with drinks they were making a couple times. Maybe this place was just having an off night. I'd be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and try it again, but I'd recommend not setting your expectations too high.
google avatar

Cole W.

Yelp
Tried several cocktails and all were very good. Their gin drink with burnt rosemary was excellent! Cool little spot, in a very nice neighborhood. I'll definitely visit again next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Ashlee M.

Yelp
I've yet to be disappointed in this place. Such an eclectic cocktail bar with a great vibe. Patio seating is so cute and cozy. The first time I visited, we asked for a drink menu and were met with " well what kind of spirits would you like? Spirit forward?". The results were perfect. The most recent visit, I chose the first cocktail on the list provided by QR code, and again was super happy. Great date spot! My only complaint was a wobbly table that threatened to waste the precious liquid.
google avatar

Nivedita P.

Yelp
Ordered the 2 special drinks off of the board : tequila based drink called Ambrosia & smoked old fashioned. Both were delicious & beautiful. I also had the spicy margarita; it was super spicy & very tart. I didn't like that one. This a bar has a very chill vibe. Loved all the artwork on display.

Yelp
Joshua and Matt went above and beyond, their cocktails were on point. looking forward to becoming a regular :)

Yelp
The bartender on the night of November 9th 2023 was SO rude. My friend and I were trying to order drinks and while we kindly asked what drink this one lady had at the bar (that he obviously had made) he responded with "i made that a long time ago i don't have time to remember that". He was just rude and very short tempered for no reason. Wouldn't recommend coming here. Hopefully management puts this in check because this isn't the first review about unacceptable behavior at this bar.

Dan B.

Yelp
The bartender treated us like crap. Asked for the finest pager and he gave us an ipa. Took it outside after he shut down the seating area as he saw us walking toward u It. Threatened to fight me or as he liked to say' don't make me big guy you'. He was clearly high on something. Lots of aggression. Terrible service. Pretty good atmosphere if you re in the college 'in' crowd. Don't go here if you want friendly service and you're over 30.

Yelp
The bf and I were on the hunt for a low key bar after dinner on a Saturday and Yelp led me to Hazel. Art, Bar, Community - I'm in! Right on South Pearl St. and not very busy at about 8 or 9 pm on a Saturday, they've only been open about a month. They claim to be a neighborhood bar and let me tell you, for being just a bar baby, this place had me feeling right at home. Service was fantastic and super friendly and everyone was so approachable, even the owner who was behind the bar. They don't have a drink menu, but I was encouraged to order anything my little heart desired and they would get it done. Whiskey mule for me and an old fashioned for the mans and these bad boys were skkkrronngg and delicious - exactly how we like them. And as if the drinks and fantastic service weren't enough, Hazel also had my fave old school vibes coming at me from all angles. A little early 2000s music here (hi there, All 4 One "I Swear" and Shania Twain " Still the one", I've missed you!), some dope street sign portrait art hanging there, and my favorite throwbacks of the night: an old school, wall mount, turn handle pencil sharpener right next to an awesome old cigarette machine that now dispenses $5 art. I mean, this place just gets me. Such a great find and I can't wait to come back and try the gourmet grilled cheeses they have on the menu.

Yelp
Great bar with a casual and artsy vibe. Affordable drinks: $4 canned beer (Friday night). This is actually a cocktail bar but I was in a beer mood plus I'm broke. Local art covering the walls. Friendly bartenders. Awesome neighborhood. Various art events held throughout the month - macramé, watercolor, etc. Definitely the spot to be if you like drinking and art.
