The Hottest New Bakeries Around Boston

"Inspired by childhood readings of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, owner Natalie Hug has nurtured a love of pastry through culinary school and right to her first full-time bakery: Hearth & Hug inside the Boston Public Market. Hug keeps the pastry case stocked with sweet and savory scones, multiple types of croissants, oversized pretzels dusted in crunchy flakes of salt, cinnamon rolls, and more. Breads and cakes by the slice round out the menu. Swing by nearby BPM vendor George Howell for a cup of coffee, and order up a bag of baked goods from Hug." - Erika Adams

Boston Public Market Opens Its First Full-Service Bakery | Eater Boston

"Run by California Bay Area native Natalie Hug, this is the first full-service bakery to open inside the Boston Public Market, offering cozy, comfort-forward pastries and inventive baked goods. Morning choices include croissants made with a sourdough starter and a little wheat flour (the ham-and-cheese croissant is a favorite), muffins, and sweet and savory scones—be sure to try the cheddar-and-onion. Fresh loaves such as white and whole-wheat bread, focaccia, and sourdough boule are available daily, with rotating specials like Friday challah and a Saturday garlic-and-cheddar beer bread that pairs well with fall chili. The sweet case features Rice Krispie Treats, tea cakes, Madeleines, classic cookies (chocolate chunk, oatmeal, M&M) alongside playful flavors such as a white miso–coconut cookie, remixed whoopie pies, dulce de leche coconut macaroons, and Venezuelan golfeados; savory snacks include cacio e pepe cheese straws, and bold coffee from George Howell at the market completes the experience. The overall vibe is warm and inviting—a true pastry-focused neighborhood stop that also takes part in market community events and celebrations." - Nathan Tavares

Tried out this new bakery in Davis Square yesterday. There was already a long line waiting for the doors to open at 8 am. A whole lot of eager customers waited eagerly for their turn - our turn took 30 minutes of patient waiting to reach the door. Very delicious offerings!! Slightly on the pricey side for the baked offerings and for the coffee. Lots of street parking around. Since we had our dog with us, one of us had to stay outside while the other shopped. Quite a few of the customers waiting in line had brought along their dogs. One recommendation, have a doggie harness station outside on the footpath - kinda like one sees in old western movies for horseradish. Wish you all the very best!!

Very cute place for pastries! I grabbed a ginger cranberry scone. The cranberries migrated to one side (not good), but the ginger was very sharp (good!) I’d love to try other things! Very good prices for the size and taste

Google
A solid bakery/cafe in the Davis square area. There is not a ton of seating inside and parking is limited to permitted street parking. Luckily it is very accessible via bike path, minutes away from the Davis sq T stop, and a bus top for the 88 and 90 buses right outside.

So yummy! Got the smoked salmon tea sandwich and the white miso coconut cookie. Sandwich was $14, very tasty, and came with a generous size of the most delicious french fries on the side!! The cookie was amazing too, savory and sweet!!

Google
Amazing baked goods!! Best ham and cheese croissant I've ever had. We went on a Saturday morning around 11am and they had already run out of all of their croissants. I returned Sunday morning around 9am and was able to snag that ham and cheese. I hope they adjust prep operations to ensure they have enough supply going forward.

Breads and sweet treats. Sampled a brownie…can’t have just one! The bakery does not skimp on the chocolate. Very fresh.

Had a delicious latte prepared with perfectly pulled espresso shots. Yum! Also enjoyed a ham and cheese croissant which was delicious . What I really wanted was to get a big box of pastries because every single item looked (and rolled) delicious. I'll do that next time!

Really excited about this bakery! I can’t wait to see this place establish itself as a go-to neighborhood spot. I enjoyed ham & cheese croissant, sweet rolls (cinnamon and this Venezuelan bun). Also enjoyed the latte and matcha.

Yelp
There's another new bakery in town! Hearth and Hug opened Sep 2023 and occupies a stall toward the rear of Boston Public Market. Everything looked tempting and I ordered the ham and cheese croissant, which was huge and covered with an everything bagel spice mix (salt, poppy seeds, garlic). The outer crust golden brown and crispy, and the interior had that flaky butteriness that all croissant lovers crave. The ham was thinly sliced, the cheese had a moderately robust Gruyère like flavor. My only complaint was that the everything but the bagel seasoning overpowered the subtle croissant flavors--I'd recommend to the baker to offer an option without those spices. I look forward to ripping into their chocolate croissant next time!

Yelp
Amazing baked goods, the pretzels and sourdough bread are our favorites. The selection varies every week. The owner and baker loves to be creative and is so willing to answer any questions about ingredients of any product. She loves bringing us her fresh ideas. Get there early- my favs sell out by midday.

Yelp
Hearth & Hug is a wonderful bakery that just opened up! I work nearby and have tried a few menu items and everything is delicious. Items rotate during the week and with seasonal ingredients and flavors. Some ingredients are sourced from other vendors in the Boston Public Market which I think is incredible! My favorite so far is the ham and cheese croissant, it has a nice flakiness, the ham and cheese are great quality, and I love the everything seasoning on top. If I ever see them in stock I grab one since they go quickly in the mornings! I also tried a blondie with an orange jelly/ marmalade (can't remember exactly but it was delicious!) The blondie was so rich and the orange added such a nice texture and brightness to the treat. I look forward to my next blondie and to see what fun ingredients are in it next! Their pretzels are also delicious! I had one with the everything seasoning and it adds such a nice touch to pretzel. They also have the option to add mustard! Lastly, I also tried a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie has a crispy edge with a very buttery, delicious center. The chocolate inside was super rich but it wasn't too overpowering. The cookie was super balanced and such a classic treat. The owner Natalie is absolutely wonderful. She is so nice and I enjoy chatting with her every time I'm there. I always look forward to trying new or returning favorites of mine and I can't wait to continue seeing this bakery thrive!
