"Located in Heartland Village, smack dab in the middle of Staten Island, kosher bakeshop Heartland Bagels has been an island favorite for almost 30 years; in fact it won this year’s bagel poll of the Staten Island Advance. After a brief hiatus, the store is reopening April 30. Delivery via doordash.com" - Carla Vianna, Eater Staff

I remember a Heartland bagels from 25-30 years ago. They had the best bagels in Staten Island and in New York City. The past year and a half the bagels unfortunately are not what they used to be for example an everything bagel has very little seasoning on it and the size of the bagel are tiny compared to what they used to be. I and I’m sure like others don’t mind paying more just don’t mess with the original recipe. And when you order egg over medium and you constantly get oh well done egg on a so called Everything bagel, I just feel cheated and I thought I would never say this but I don’t think I’m going to be ordering there anymore. Below are a few pictures of what I’m talking about, anyone that knows heartland bagels knows these are not everything bagels. And you can clearly see the egg is well done. Very disappointed! Went from the best to just OK sadly! Just my opinion and again, I wouldn’t mind paying if I was getting heartland bagels!! The staff is very friendly and very I don’t believe any of my comments reflected the staff but they’re excellent no problem with them. I’m basing my review on the food quality not the staff staff has five stars. I don’t want anyone ripping me apart here. Lol. If this happened once or twice with the food even bother writing the review, but this is happened is 20 or more occasions and now I just feel I have to say something.

Google
Shocked to see the other reviews when I stopped by to leave this one. Our encounter at heartland bagels was quick, staff took our order right away, I asked for an extra toasted bagel, she even asked me if the bagel looked toasted okay before putting on the cream cheese. We were in and out, staff was fine with us. The cashiers were younger girls, maybe teens, but their attitude was unproblematic. We really enjoyed our bagels on our morning walk. We’d come back. 5/5

I just get out from the store, I pass by to get some cookies that are really good. One I get in the staff was chatting like me and another old man wasn't there standing waiting for them. One the girl in glasses finish her conversation the only words I get are "what do you want" I was really polite and I said hello how are you doing and in response once again I get "what you want". I ordered a pound of cookies and I was trying to order, since they have so many choices and without name of course u don't know all of them, so I start pointing at them and saying the color, and this girl once again with her attitude told me I cant see what you pointing at and speak louder. What a disappointing experience. They should have nicer people who make the costumers comfortable when they go to buy, because we don't get nothing there for free to be treated like that.

Google
I found many pieces of hair in my bagel. I don't normally write reviews, but this one I had to write. Please see pictures. I bought a dozen to take home and when I took one out to eat, I saw all these pieces of what appeared to be freshly cut hair baked into my bagel. Honestly, I have been going to Heartland Bagels for a long time and I don't think I will be going anymore. I am pretty shook by all this because I'm worried I might have eaten a little bit of the hair. Sigh...i don't know what else to say.

Google
I love this place. Not sure why there are so many negative reviews. Prices have gone up everywhere due to inflation. The bagels here my favorite on the island & staff are usually super friendly!

Google
Great bagel spot with a nice selection of bagels and muffins. A little tight inside so be prepared to possibly stand on line outside. All the staff is super nice also

Google
Layout/atmosphere *Kosher establishment; takeout only Food/drink *Everything bagel with cream cheese - good *Multigrain bagel with cream cheese - solid *Seven layer chocolate cake - really good

Google
i dont understand how someone can cut a bagel in half and not notice a used band aid baked into the bagel. please double check you bagels before taking a bite, who know what else you will find.

Yelp
I will tell you one thing that will sum up this bagel store. I fly up from Pompano Beach and bring back, egg everything bagels by the dozens. Don't ask me for one in Florida because, I don't share. They freeze well and are my once a week treat. In addition, I will emotionally state, they make the BEST Black & White AND Rainbow cookie in the WORLD!

Santina M.

Yelp
Brought a cake and 2 pounds of cookies for Father's Day cookies were hard as a rock and the cake was stale as well. Will never come back

Scott G.

Yelp
Ever since I moved from SI, I've been ordering tons of bagels to take back with me. The bagels are by far the best tasting, the most reasonably priced. Especially what they charge in NC. They are very accommodating. Friendly staff. I will continue to bring back bagels from here anywhere I go! #1 Bagels on SI

Mike M.

Yelp
Heartland bagels could easily be considered a top contender in NYC. The bagels here have that slight exterior crisp and chewy interior that you find in a perfect bagel. Always fresh. The pastry here is also pretty good. Over a dozen different types of cookies and pastries that you won't find in another bagel store. Seven layer donut?! Sweetness overload, but delicious. Kosher so no BEC. Not a problem.

Anisa S.

Yelp
Literally the best bagels ever! Their bagels are so big and they make fresh bakery items too!! I wish I could take some with me to Florida because seriously... ITS AMAZING FOOD!!

Nicole D.

Yelp
Heartland Bagels have some of the best bagels I've had on Staten Island. They always taste so fresh! Today, we picked up a dozen assorted bagels for family visiting and they were amazed by how good they were. We got cinnamon raisin, everything, egg and plain, and they were all great. P.S: This is a kosher deli, so keep that in mind. If you're looking for a bacon egg and cheese or anything like that you'll have to keep looking. But the bagels are always fresh and delicious!

Bianca C.

Yelp
Asked for two everything flagels cut in half and got an attitude. The bagels were cut the wrong way I thought it was clear I wanted them cut in half for sandwich purposes but they were cut down the middle. Also received a plain and an everything so it wasn't even what I asked for. When paying he shoved my change through the crack of the plastic barrier and threw my change on the floor. The flagels also taste stale and old.

Yelp
Heartland Bagels is in an unassuming strip mall in Staten Island. There was plenty of free parking in the large parking lot during my stop. The place is a little small inside (the shelves with food on them to purchase in the middle of the establishment kind of limit indoor walking space), especially when there are more than a few customers inside. All their dessert options looked very good in the display case. I ordered some bagels and a black and white cookie. There was a bit of confusion over who was next in line or in line at all (some customers were waiting for their bagels to be toasted, others were browsing in the limited space, and I was trying to place my order), and one or two members of the staff may have been new. There didn't seem to be a good system between the employees making/toasting food and the person running the cash register. Perhaps because of this, I ended up getting the wrong bagels and didn't notice until I left. Once I realized the error, I decided it wasn't worth it to go back again. Thankfully, the bagels I received and the cookie all tasted great. However, I did find a hair baked inside one of the bagels, which wasn't ideal. Overall, I'd give my experience 3 1/2 stars based on the good quality and variety of the food itself.

Dina V.

Yelp
No cream cheese shortage in here. Got my loxspread bagel this morning. Got two plains to go. And since this is a kosher spot, also got a challah. Have to drive a bit to get here but still make the trip because the bagels are legit. Like I said Friday's they have challah. For Purim they had hamantshen. There's usually some pound cake in containers and cookies in the display case. Chips and drinks on the side. Customer service has been ok for me. They're usually busy so I understand needing to be brusque or else the already long line of uncaffeinated plebeians would stage a revolt. *story time* When I would miss the express bus I'd trudge over for coffee and a bagel (because if you're going to be late for work anyway may as well be well fed). So I'd be running for the next express bus spilling coffee everywhere with half a bagel shoved in AND trying to get my mask on. Fun times.

Mari D.

Yelp
This was the worst bagel spot ever ! 6 people taking orders and nobody seems to get it right horrible like they rush and give you what they want to give you .

Russell B.

Yelp
Yeah, this is why NY bagels are an American ICON! Heartland has been baking for decades and over the generations, the line keeps growing and growing in the mornings! A staple in Staten Island!

Lori C.

Yelp
The bagels were very good, price way to expensive and the service was terrible. I went at 6:10am I was the second person, workers seemed like they had been working for hours with an attitude. I don't even think I got everything I paid for and didn't even care I couldn't get out quick enough. I really wanted to have a good/food experience again the bagels were really really good but not worth it at all.

Kim M.

Yelp
Heartland Bagels is a staple in the community. The small store is always packed with a line out the door nearly everyday. They serve fresh hot bagels. The bagels are crunchy on the outside, fluffy soft on the inside and super flavorful. The quintessential NY bagel! If your looking for a Schmeer, your in luck because they have a bunch to choose from. Also, they have tuna salad and egg but no pork products because of our Jewish friends. They have turnovers, crumb cake, cookies and breakfast staples like juice, chocolate and reg milk if you need. If your in the neighborhood this is the place you need to come check out for your bagel needs!

Michele R.

Yelp
Best Bagels hands down. The young ladies could be a little more friendly but whatever. Still left a tip.

Nikita G.

Yelp
Really enjoy this place..I've been coming here for years! After moving to SF, I make sure to come here a few times during every visit back home. My usual is a sesame bagel w/ cream cheese. Their bagels are always fresh. All good things aside, I must have caught them on an off day - toaster wasn't working so no toasted bagels! Kind of odd that they wouldn't have a backup or a second option - given they are all about bagels. The person who helped me was just not nice. I was there at like 10:30 so I'm not sure if it was a long morning for her, but a smile goes a long way!

Yelp
In Yelp We Trust! Dog tired after our JFK dealings, one of us woke up too late for the Hampton Inn breakfast buffet, so I beamed into Yelp to find a good bagel place on Staten Island, where we could make a quick stop for a nosh in the car. There were a few places that yelped well, but Heartland Bagels had the best name, and was in the best location to keep us more or less on route. This small shop sits in the Heartland Village Shopping Center, which provides ample parking out front. The space is small and tight, and it was amazing how much bakery goods were crammed in there. Cookies, Muffins, Cakes, as well as a case with plenty of Bagel and Cream Cheese options. The line was not out the door, but was about 5 people deep at the register. We orders within 3 minutes our Onion Bagel with Butter and Swiss, and Plain Bagel with Cream Cheese and Lox. I was pleasantly surprised that the cost was under $7 total. The crew was great. They knew their jobs well, and had fast hands preparing the orders. Bagel wise, they knew from rounders and sandwiches. Mine was crisp/crunchy on the outside, but light and airy within. Just the way I like it. It was still very fresh, and the flavor excellent. The Lox was not very salty, and played well with the cream cheese. We were both happy with our choices, and the growling in the stomach subsided quickly. I would definitely return for more of their bagels, and a few of their cookies. Heartland Bagels is a 5 Star experience waiting to happen.

Matt K.

Yelp
Best bagels I've had, also great donuts and pastries. Donuts are only available on weekends but worth it. Also, fairly extensive cookie selection and an awesome staff that does its best when busy. Five star bagel shop

Bev B.

Yelp
Maybe stick to bagels and not politics. Or make sure you're not on your business page when you comment on other people's posts?

Katrina R.

Yelp
great everything-named bagels! personally i continue to love a freshly toasted onion bagel!!! can you say Yuummmm?!?! Come to Heartland Bagels,! nothing is better than buying to feed a family of four with walking out of the frontdoor of Heartland Bagels with at least 6 bagels in a bag your hands, paper bags please!!!

Jennifer T.

Yelp
The bagels used to be good but lately they seem hard . Also lately when I order bagels they screw up the order. I speak clearly I don't understand what's going on there. It's unfortunate because maybe it hard to find people who take pride in their work.

Heba A.

Yelp
I won't be coming here again after watching one staff member speak down to a customer while the rest of them laughed. They are incapable of following simple directions yet they are extremely rude. Imagine if their job entailed something other then making a bagel.

Tiffany C.

Yelp
I went this past Saturday, late morning around 11am, to pick up a quick breakfast for my boyfriend & myself... I ordered an everything bagel toasted with cheddar cheese & a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll (after waiting on line for 15 minutes, mind you). They are "kosher," so they don't have bacon, or any meat at all actually. That's not what "kosher" means. I was honestly offended by the nonsense I was given and expected to eat. My bagel was not an everything bagel as you can see from the picture. It was a nothing bagel. It was not toasted. The cheese was clearly not cheddar. It was that EBT government welfare cheese- knock off Kraft singles. There was not even one full slice. Please look at the pictures and laugh at my misery and disappointment. The bacon, egg, and cheese - without bacon - ended up in the trash after my boyfriend took one bite. So nothing more to say there. I don't understand the great reviews in the least bit.

Kevin L.

Yelp
Heartland Bagels on Richmond Avenue in Staten Island was nothing short of the Best Bagel and Cookie place I have ever been to! The entire staff was very patient with the options of bagels, Rainbow cookies, donuts, etc. It was a busy Sunday but Anthony ( I met the owner) and the entire Heartland team made it same that it wasn't busy at all! The food was Excellent, they packaged up our many orders for the trip back to Pittsbugh, and they all did it with a smile! Anthony and Heartland bagels keep doing what you do! Great to hear how many years you have been in business. You must be doing all of the right things!!!

Nat P.

Yelp
This location has the best bagels (I was born and raised in Brooklyn until I moved to Staten Island a few years ago, we know Brooklyn bagels are the best) and it was hard to find a good bagel shop in Staten Island. Krispy on the outside but soft on the inside = perfect NYC Bagel. My father LOVES their Jelly Donuts (dairy), he said it's the best he ever had. The black and white cookies are my favorite (kosher). Rainbow Cookie Donut =delish! The staff, they are not always friendly and they have perfect RBF on. I can understand if they work long hours, dealing with many customers but doesn't hurt to be friendly and put a smile on.

Joe Z.

Yelp
If it wasn't so close to me I would never go to them. The kids who work there care little for the customers. Rarely say thank you and can't get an order correct. Ive been there many times with no line and they could not even get the cream cheese flavor right. Its a shame the bagels are decent.

Emily T.

Yelp
Wow, this place is actually really good. The store is very unassuming and they don't have any flashy decorum. It's very simple, you walk in, you order and you leave. It's very much a grab & go bagel store. I ordered a bunch (onion, egg, everything, blueberry). The inside is so soft and fluffy. You can top off your bagel craving with a smooth French vanilla cappuccino for only $1.75 Being an LA girl, any bagel from New York tasted spectacular! And it's so much cheaper than those snooty bagel stores in Manhattan.

Sarah E.

Yelp
This is my favorite bagel store because their bagels are delicious. However, I spent $3 on their new "avocado toast" this morning. It's supposed to be avocados, pesto, and cheese. I have no idea what this slop is and quite frankly you guys should be ashamed of yourselves for selling this nonsense. Stick to what you're great at - bagels.

Chre G.

Yelp
Hands down the best bagels on Staten Island. It is a kosher bagel place so you won't find bacon here. Try their tuna salad or egg salad. Simply amazing.

Matt K.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a little boy. Always my favorite bagel store. It's great they including things over the years like a grill and coffee. Great place for all.

Casey R.

Yelp
After going to 20+ bagel places in Staten Island, I think I finally found one that makes bagels like Brooklyn!!! And it's here, first they make there own bagels, which 99% of bagel places in Staten Island don't! There bagels are also crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, the way a bagel is suppose to be, and to top it all off....are you ready for this? They actually MAKE YOUR COFFEE!!!! Which I thought was impossible to find on this island!!! For a moment I actually felt like I was in Brooklyn! Other bagel places in Staten Island, the bagel is more like a huge soft large doughy mixture, nothing like what a bagel is suppose to be. You also have to always make your own coffee, which is a huge pet peeve of mine!!!! The place is small, very small, and there is always a long line, which usually goes fast, they also have Italian cookies, which look absolutely delicious, but the place is always so busy, that I'm afraid to hold up the line. When you put your order in, they write it on a brown paper bag, you then pay, and wait, it's pretty fast, and they have a lot of people working. Overall, I'm happy!!!

Raeesa H.

Yelp
The BIGGEST bagels I have ever seen! A local Staten Island bagel store that seems to be pretty popular among New Yorkers. My Staten Island native friend took me here for breakfast, I was so surprised by the size and price of the bagel. You get a lot for your money and it so filling! If you can't handle a full size bagel, you have the option for a half bagel which might be more doable if you're not a carb fan like me. They also have a special French toast option where they French toast the bagel and serve it with syrup and butter. You might want to share this one with a friend! Great service, line moves fast, freshest bagels. Tip: they don't take American Express

Alisher I.

Yelp
The best bagels, great service , good prices, friendly staff !!! Best of the best on Staten Island!

Melody L.

Yelp
I always loved this store. Wonderful cream cheese. Cookies to die for! Chocolate Rugelach like nobodies business. Well, BEWARE. every three months I buy all kinds of cookies , Rugelach and bialies to fill a carry on suitcase and bring it to dad. MOLD CITY. besides from the fact that's disgusting (1/2 the order was molded) I'm I'll and this can really cause serious complications.

Ian N.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday, around 10:30. The woman in charge looked PISSED to be there. I was glad she didn't help me, because I didn't know this was a "kosher" bagel shop and ordered a bacon egg and cheese. I saw her getting red, but the old biddy helping me let me know and I went to my backup bagel- cinnamon raisin with cinnamon walnut cream cheese. I also got an Italian rainbow cookie donut, that they had no idea was called an Italian rainbow cookie because this is not an Italian bakery. So odd. Anyway, I am pleased to report that attitudes aside, everything I ordered was great. The bagel was huge, and the cream cheese was just enough that it didn't go everywhere but wasn't disappointing. They never asked if I wanted it toasted, which I didn't like, but the bagel tasted nice and fresh with a little bit of fresh baked crunch to it. The Italian rainbow donut was good, but the small piece on top was either SUPER stale, or a weird baked cookie. The main event had real jelly and tasted great. Total price for 1 donut and 1 bagel was $8, which was surprising. This place ain't cheap.

Shanee H.

Yelp
Childhood favorite and still my go-to bagel place. Everything is delicious and well made. Especially the cookies!! They used to sell these red and black roll up cookies that were OUT OF THIS WORLD. Seriously used to look forward to Sunday breakfast for these cookies. They're gone now , my sister and I are devastated but we are still loyal heartland bagel goers.

Kate C.

Yelp
Excellent bagel spot. The French toast bagel is a phenomenal treat. Very small, prices are reasonable, it's kosher, has some Italian cookies, and drinks/snacks.

Christopher G.

Yelp
Best bagel store hands down don't listen to anyone say it's not because it is. the customer service is great if u wanna get in and out the guys are the best way to go. They have great conversations with you just ask for Eli for his special and u won't be sorry for it.

Mo E.

Yelp
Saw this place was rated as #1 bagels on Staten Island so I had to try it and I'm glad I did. Great quality and selection of fresh bagels. I also tried the rainbow cake donut ($5/donut) and it was well worth it. Plenty of parking!

Kirsten S.

Yelp
Delicious bagels a bit more $ then other bagel stores. Very very tiny and I'm not sure if the take credit cards. They only have coke products which are not cold at all. This isn't your average deli. Don't come here for your normal bacon, egg and cheese since they don't use bacon in this Jewish deli. Like I said my family really likes the bagels here not so much the Flagels, yea that's a thing. This is my local go to bagel shop but nothing else.

Zach G.

Yelp
The food tastes great but 90% of the time they mess up the order, even when ordering one thing. Bagels are good but are way too small.

Rita W.

Yelp
An overpriced dirty little place that hires staff with extremely low IQ's. As this is a convenient location for me at times, I used to go there often. And I mean USED TO. While I may not enjoy a longer drive to get bagels I will certainly do so. Went in there on Friday 4/27. No one in there but me. I asked the worker in a dirty apron to get me 3 everything bagels and if she can slice them open for me. I also ordered a small container of tuna. As she is ringing this up I noticed she rang up a $1 that was unaccounted for. She informed me that that was her FEE to slice open the bagels. At this point I told her she has 2 choices. One being to shove those bagels where the sun don't shine or forget her $1 FEE. At which time she told me that her boss told her to charge the $1. I told her she's not getting it so what are you going to do now? After contemplating her choices she removed her "FEE". I happen to be in charge of a fairly large school based parent group who often ordered largely from Heartland Bagels. The owner of this establishment of mediocrity with it's low IQ employees just lost a very large account. Go elsewhere. The bagels aren't that great, the service sucks, cleanliness is subpar and their prices are extreme.

Maurice R.

Yelp
Has amazing bagels. Place is small so grab and go. I haven't had any problems with any employees there, (they all seem sweet to me) they do deal with a lot of customers so while you wait on line figure out what you want and spit it out when it's your turn.

Sally N.

Yelp
*This review is base on their cookies* The cookies here are Waaaaaay too sweet for me. I have had quite a lot of cookies from different bakeries on the island, and this one is definately one of the sweetest one I have ever have. Dont know about other people, but for me the sweetness just over kills it.

Albert T.

Yelp
Bagels were nothing special not worth the trip out of anyone's way. I doubt they are making them there tasted like pre made dough and they bake them there. The Black and White cookie was good. The other cookies that were sampled were just average. Will not return.

Joe B.

Yelp
Here's how my experience just went. I tell the girl I would like 2 double egg& cheese with S&P on a roll and a jelly doughnut. She tells me they only have jelly doughnuts on the weekends. Ok no biggie, but the sign should say "weekends only". So she says just 2 eggs and cheese on a roll with S&P? I tell her yes but I want 2 sandwiches. She's says oh 2 sandwiches with 2 eggs & cheese? I say yes please. Then I get home and find ketchup on both of the damn sandwiches. I DONT WANT KETCHUP ON MY SANDWICH!! The girl at the counter actually wrote SPK on the bag. Does anybody listen to what people are ordering or do they just not care?

Melanie G.

Yelp
The bagels are delicious, a little crispy outside, soft inside. Yes, they're kosher , so no meat. Just an FYI to a,previous reviewer who said this isn't how, kosher works: Yes, it is. Bacon is not at all kosher and sin've they actively serve dairy, no meat. The fresh lox is amazing. The baked goods are ok in my opinion, nothing amazing. However , I go for the bagels and lox and I'm not disappointed. There's a reason they have huge lines!

Mike N.

Yelp
The best bagels on staten island!!! Friendly staff. My tip is since there is always a line on mostornings, please plan ahead and call your bagel order in. They also have a great assortment of Italian cookies and pastries!!!

Yanika M.

Yelp
Two times I went here and two times I got my order wrong. Reading all the reviews here I can tell that it wasn't only me with this problem. Anyways, bagels are good, however you HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ORDER IS DONE PROPERLY! Little side note: they are kosher.

Falise W.

Yelp
All my life I've been going to heartland the best bagels whatever they are doing they're doing it right

Ilona I.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place over 20 years. Their lox and whitefish is very salty to the point where I always have to throw out the sandwich I could not even finish the second half. And when you make a sandwich you always put the tomato with the cream cheese not the tomato on plain bagel with no cream cheese but that's just protocol of sandwich making I'm sure after 20 years they would have it down packed.
