The menu has all the Bay Area classics covered, including loaded avocado toasts, veggie bowls, and lavender lattes. Visit date: July 18, 2025 Lovely plave and great vibes. My friend was insisting me on visiting the restaurant and this town and that’s why I really enjoyed my 2 hours here. They have a great variety of healthy food and coffee options. My Salmon sandwich was too good. The whole place was supporting the eco-friendly cause and that was impressive. The staff was helpful and recommended more options to try and also gave a small introductory talk about their products. Would love to visit again..

I guess this would qualify as “California cuisine”? I ordered the barbacoa bowl, and she had the sourdough toast with egg, bacon, and avocado, and a small bowl of miso. My bowl was tasty and filling. She enjoyed her toast, but felt the miso was a little plain. Very good experience all around.

Google
ok, let's start with the Horchata Syrup & cinnamon cappuccino - I loved that it was already a double shot of espresso & what's more is that the woman at the register told me they use organic whole milk. The beef barbacoa bowl was soooooooo nourishing. The beef was so perfect I didn't even need a butter knife to cut it. The avocado was the perfect science between buttery, soft & chilled. At first I was being a bit stingy with the tip because I was like these ladies don't need my money BUTTT BAYBEEEEE they deserved every coin so I went back & tipped them all my cash because the food & experience was so nourishing & delicious. I really hope they enjoy my money as much as I enjoyed the food & cappuccino. GO CHECK THEM OUT ASAP!!!! Go spend your money there because I told you too.

Came on a Sunday for dinner and ordered two main dishes to share with my partner. Nice, relaxed atmosphere and sat down at one of the tables and got water from the water station. It was taking a long time for our order to come out even though there weren't many people there. when the women brought our order she had it in a to go bag and I said we had ordered it for here, which she apologized for and looked at the receipt printed on the bag which said the same. she asked if we would like some bowls for it and I said yes and she went off and five or so minutes later she was no where to be seen, so I went to the counter to ask what happened to her and they said she went on break. they apologized and provided bowls. overall it took a long time to get our food and the food itself was nicer looking than it was tasty. it was rather bland.

Google
Super delicious and healthy breakfast! We had two sourdough toast; one with smoked salmon, soft boiled eggs, and wonderfully dressed greens, and the other one with brown sugar BLT. The coffee was dark and strong. Super friendly service. Charming ambiance. Definitely coming back!

Google
I love Heartwood Eatery. The quality of the food really stands out. I appreciate their commitment to partnering with local farmers whenever possible. You really can't go wrong with the Heartwood Bowl: Fresh greens & veggies, soft boiled egg and brown rice with that delicious dressing. Recently they added a Poke Bowl with tuna that was so yummy. And I'm excited that they brought the Boba tea back! Whenever I have out of town guests I bring them here and they are always impressed with the food and the community vibe.

Google
On a trip to Nevada city, ca I was looking for a place for breakfast and good coffee. In my searches, Heartwood eatery popped up. The place looked so did the menu options. Saw some comments on their good coffee as well. We got the egg salad toast with Avocado, the California bowl and coffees. The egg salad was homemade and delicious so was the bowl. The coffee was great as well. The people were super friendly and loved the setting. Great way to start my day of exploring the area

Google
I would say no matter the time you go to this establishment its going to be busy. Understandably so, because the food and vibes are great! The only reason why I do give this place a full 5 star is because the wait time in insane. You have to keep in mind it's a small business in the heart of Nevada City, CA. So getting a table is extremely hard. However you can always get your order to go like we did. And if a space frees up before your order gets called, have a seat! The coffee is rich and worth every penny. The service is great. Everyone we encountered that day was very sweet and genuine. Bathroom was really clean. I appreciated their attention and detail. Main dining area was also very cute and clean. The entire vibe is very much take care of yourself which I love. When you're done make sure you clear off your dirty dishes in designated area so they can turn tables over faster with having a small staff! Loved my Asian sesame chicken salad & Egg salad Sando with a cappuccino!

Yelp
Ate on the breakfast/lunch side of Heartwood eatery. Just found this place and look forward to trying the dinner side next time. Today we ordered the vegan miso soup bowl. It was $14 and was completely forgettable. The bowl wasn't any where near full. The miso soup was bland. We got the quinoa added and it was totally forgettable. Said it would have green pea and sunflower shoots, but we had none. There were some green onions slices floating around on the top. We ordered two dishes to share and this one didn't fit the bill as a shareable item. For the disappointment we had in the miso it was totally made up by the vegan kale cesar salad. It was a large bowl of yum! Hearty serving of well dressed kale. The Cesar dressing delicious! Slices of cucumber, avocado and chick peas and a beautiful thick slice of bread on top. It was so filling we easily shared it and filled us up. It was $15 only a dollar more than miso broth bowl. It's was so worth every penny. The service was friendly and fast. It's a pick your own table place, which means one usually has to wipe their table down for crumbs. We don't mind. It's a cute place. We found parking fairly easy. Commercial street being blocked off to traffic is nice.

Yelp
Vegan friendly eatery that is delicious! We stopped in for lunch and ordered a bowl and salad and they were both very good! They do have seating outside that is dog friendly.

Yelp
I loved the vibe of this place! I went twice when I was in Nevada City, once for breakfast and once for dinner. For breakfast I had the salmon toast and an iced lavender latte. Both items were delicious. The service was friendly and the food came out relatively fast. For breakfast, you order at the counter, and they call your name when your food is ready for you to come up and grab it. For dinner, you order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food to you. For dinner I got the bahn mi bowl and my husband got ramen. Both were good. They source from local farmers, which is great!

Yelp
Great coffee and a decent selection for vegans. Laid back coffee shop atmosphere. Service is also laid back (and a bit slow).

Yelp
I only had time for a small but (the miso soup with bread and a ginger turmeric lemonade), but ALL the food I saw coming out looked amazing! Bring some time, it gets busy and making food from scratch takes a while. You go up to the counter, order and pay, pick a cozy spot to sit, and they will shout your name at the pick up counter when it's ready. The miso was delicious with some fresh vegetables and the side of bread with salted butter, so good! Would definitely come back to try more dishes.

Yelp
Gave this place a try since we were in the area for Victorian Christmas and it had a lot of good reviews. When we walked in it was fairly crowded. We were worried we wouldn't find anywhere to sit but luckily the table next to the register got up as we're about to order. The cashier was friendly and patient as we navigated the menu. We had thought we over ordered for the four of us, since we all got an entree and then three appetizers to share, but the portions were perfect in my opinion. The annex ramen definitely had some fresh ingredients. I chose chicken but I'd recommend another option since the chicken wasn't that special. Also, the broth seemed fairly basic and lacked flavors that I'm used to from other places, so I'd recommend ordering the other ramen options. The best appetizer for me was probably the hot and sweet karaage. It definitely strays away from what I'm used to with karaage, as it started reminding me more of popcorn chicken and boneless wings, but it definitely hit the spot (if I had rice it would've been even better). The crispy potatoes would've been pretty bland if it weren't for the onions and greens on top. The shiitake fritters were basically meatballs to me, which I didn't mind considering I don't like mushrooms. Now that I've written all this out this place is probably more of a 3.5 off of the one visit considering one of the employees spilled sauce on my coat when they were bringing out our food, but that sentiment might just be because of the items I chose to order.

Cindy M.

Yelp
We decided to come here after getting a recommendation and seeing the great reviews. We ordered this appetizer and noodle soup to share. We came around 7 pm and it was quite busy. It took about half an hour for the appetizer to come out and another 20 minutes for the noodle soup to come out. Both dishes were pretty small, especially for the price. The appetizer was this fried shiitake. We didn't expect it to be essentially ground up shiitake that was battered. The sauce tasted like hoisin sauce that had a heavy drizzle. In terms of flavor, this dish was not balanced. The noodle soup was essentially a red curry noodle soup. I liked the cashews and peanuts in there. The broth itself was a bit bland. Perhaps we didn't order the right dishes, but Heartwood seems to be a nice option for people with dietary restrictions.

Yelp
We come here every time we're in Nevada City. Ambiance: Rustic cafeteria vibe - what you would expect for the type of food they serve. I like how they list all the farms they source from on a chalkboard. Food: the one thing that is consistently amazing is their bread. Aside from that, there are a few standout dishes. Avo Egg Toast - avocado toasts are ubiquitous these days, but it's actually hard to find a truly delicious one. The one at Heartwood is legitimately good because the flavors all work and meld together. Shitake toast - good if you like a bit of kick. Plenty of fresh mushrooms with the perfect amount of spice. Rainbow salad - really surprisingly good. Not sure what it is (maybe it's the fresh ingredients, maybe it's the sesame on top ) but all of the veggies pare together in a wonderfully delicious way. Service: nothing special to write home about, but nothing negative either. Overall, we really enjoy the food and the restaurant's emphasis on sourcing fresh ingredients from local farms.

Yelp
How I wish we had a Heartwood Eatery nearby our community! I would then surely be a regular guest enjoying the healthy, beautiful and scrumptious delicious meals more often! My sister suggested we meet here for lunch so we met with our men and we all enjoyed our entire dining experience. Even the wooden furniture and environment is eye pleasing and has a warm comfy welcome when first entering.

Yelp
Visited Heartwood Eatery today. October 17th..see receipt. This place is located close to the Broad Street exit in Nevada City. It opens at 10am. It's large inside and has indoor and outdoor dining with large windows to enjoy! The main part of the restaurant focuses on breakfast where the annex focuses more on dinner options (asian fusion) with Ramen dishes. I had the avocado on toast (sourdough) with sprouts on top. Nice presentation and plenty of avocado. What I really liked was their honey lavender latte- again a beautiful presentation and the coffee was delicious! The large coffee cup itself was 6 bucks but I couldn't finish it! It has a warm and earthy atmosphere with colorful art on the walls. The kitchen staff was friendly and it was a great experience! I would come back again for the lavender latte!

Yelp
every single time i've gone to heartwood, the food never disappoints. the pictures speak for themselves. the food is fresh and healthy. it doesn't feel heavy in the stomach. the staff is quick and friendly even during lunch rush. the ambiance of the restaurant is relaxed, but also very nice. i love how they have water set out for guests along with to go containers and anything else you'll need.

Yelp
Gluten-free fried chicken?!! Umm, yes please!! LOCATION & DECOR: I'm the heart of downtown Nevada City with a rustic feel with natural materials including several types of wood for seating and counter tops. Bench style, table style and bar height by the window seating available at first come first serve. Two tables outside for street dining for 2 per table. FOOD & DRINK: -fried chicken karaage: I can't believe this is gluten free. Very delicious. -shiitake fritters: tiny balls of deliciousness sitting on top of it and arugula salad. So good. -Heartwood salad bowl w/ salmon is a just have. A hearty bowl of health and wellness to share. It was everything I wanted from a salad. -Strawberry Basil Lemonade PRICE: $$ Not the cheapest place to eat. The shiitake fritters plus the fried chicken karaage Plus a strawberry basil lemonade ran me $34. SWAG/AMENITIES: -bar height seating -bench style seating -street-side dining -restroom -table service STAFF & EXPERIENCE: First to note, there are two sides of the restaurant, one serving lunch and one serving dinner. Not sure what time they switch. Possibly 4:00 p.m. . The items I ate (fried chicken karaage and shiitake fritters) are not available on the lunch menu. The service here is top notch. Incredibly friendly and personable staff. They come around the tables and refill drinks and make sure you have everything you need. Customer choice for seating. You order at the counter then they give you a number and find you wherever you are seated. Thursday dish tray for dropping silverware and things. The five hair is so homey and cute. The patrons have visit here are all very friendly and this is definitely a place I'll stop in from time to time. Just a bit expensive compared to other places nearby.

Susanne V.

Yelp
The pros- very cool ambience and architecture, delicious, beautiful bowls and coffee drinks. The cons- completely disinterested service from the woman at the register bordering on rude, 15 minute wait for jasmine green tea (seems a long time to wait for a tea bag to be dropped into hot water.)
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
Good drinks and healthy, tasty food in a charming cafe with boho hippie vibes. I enjoyed my rose cardamom latte - usually specialty espresso drinks end up too sweet for my taste but this one was perfectly balanced. Heartwood Bowl with chicken was simple and satisfying. My husband really enjoyed his Kyoto bowl. Fun place to people watch too. We'll be back!
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
The best meal we had in Nevada City! The barbacoa bowl that my husband ordered was his favorite thing he ordered anyplace during our trip. I had the heartwood bowl twice! So good. Unfortunately they forgot to put the soft-boiled egg on it the second time though, and I didn't realize it until after. Bummer! But the food here was delicious and so high quality.

Yelp
Lovely service and great food. My friend got a tomato basil soup with pesto bread that came with sprouts & said it was delicious. I got the Asian chicken salad and it did not disappoint. A plus is that the coffee is also worthwhile of going out of your way :)

Marcos S.

Yelp
Growing up in the Bay Area and waiting in those long lines in San Francisco and San Jose, this spot really knows how to do ramen right! I tried the Tantan Style Ramen and swapped the pork for Kaarage Chicken, and let me tell you, it was amazing. I love pork too, and I can only imagine it would've been awesome, but since it doesn't sit well with me, I went with the chicken instead. The broth was super flavorful, and everything just hit the spot. You can really tell they put a ton of love into that 17-hour bone broth. The chicken was golden and crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. The staff was super friendly, and the place had a cute, cozy vibe with an industrial twist. I loved checking out the local artwork on the walls. Overall, you've got to try this ramen place out. You definitely won't regret it!

Yelp
"Do we get two toasts or just one?" She shows me her index finger. "Just one." For the price of the toasts, I had to ask! 16 bucks for a salmon toast? It's got to be a helluva good toast! My man's avocado toast was 14 bucks! Do you see now why I thought we'd get two toasts??? When we walked in, I liked the wooden interior, calm space, and overall ambiance. But when I saw the menu consisted of different kinds of toasts, ONLY toasts, I was bummed. I realized, though, that they had OTHER things like salad, grain bowls, and soups. Since we came in the morning, I felt like the only option I had was toast. I was hesitant, but I wanted to stay for the sake of my curiosity. Also, I wanted to sit by the window to watch the raindrops and peoplewatch. Wow! I was amazed at how creatively they prepared the salmon toast. It was so pretty, I didn't want to eat it! The smoked salmon, topped with bright pink pickled onions and micro greens. What a sight! It was Instagram-worthy indeed! Not only was it exquisite to look at, but it was also delicious and filling!! Oh, and healthy, too!! I didn't mind paying $16 for it. My man said my toast was much better than his avocado toast, so I didn't even try it. The Matcha Latte was a tasty drink with my breakfast. It's a wonderful place to have a meal in Nevada City.

Yelp
Heartwood is a casual eatery with warm hearted staff and high quality food. I had the salmon toast and it was the best thing I've eaten in a month. It's true. It's not a place to go if you're in a hurry because it's going to take a little while to get your food, but it's worth waiting for. I can't wait for my next trip here

YH B.

Yelp
Gave 3 stars for the atmosphere and the unique menu. Tries the Heartwood bowl and it was pretty nasty. The rice was overcooked with bitter salad on the side, plus the salmon and the sauerkraut were super salty with no other flavor profiles. My kids don't like sourdougj bread so we tried their gluten free bread which was absolutely nasty and tasted like Chinese herbal medicine. My husband ordered the avocado toast which was great (safer choice than their bowls). The casher lady was on her phone and couldn't care less about her customers. Took off 2 stars due to lack of attention from the cashier lady who took our order and 2 of the items we ordered were pretty nasty.
google avatar

Katherine W.

Yelp
I love this place. Staff is always amazing. Food is fantastic. I just wish their portions were larger. I tend not to eat here if I'm really hungry for that reason.

Matt B.

Yelp
Food is delicious and good quality. Atmosphere in restaurant is warm and pleasant. Dropping to 2* because A). Food is overpriced relative to the portions for a counter order lunch spot ($37 for the sushi bowl with smoked salmon + a soda water + tax and tip), and B) The woman working the counter the afternoon of 7/12 is poorly trained in customer service. Suggestions for her: Greet the customer with a modicum of warmth (eye contact and a smile is a good start), stop looking at your phone while the customer is placing the order, continue to refrain from looking at your phone while the customer asks clarifying questions (eye contact again is helpful as it lets the customer know you're listening), offer a simple apology when the order is placed incorrectly (overpriced salmon was not added to bowl) and the customer has to return to the line to retrieve the rest of the bowl. So yeah, paying a lot of $ to be treated poorly is gonna garner a lousy review.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Farm fresh food over here from your local farms. The food is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. Lots of umamai flavors bursting in your mouth. Everything tastes fresh and so good. It was my first time here on a weekday and it was quite the lunch spot. Loved the mushroom toast and added cubed tofu on the side. The bowl with added smoked salmon was also good. The salmon isn't your typical smoked salmon because it's not slimy. Their miso soup is also delicious. Beautiful flowers are decorated around the restaurant giving it a warm and inviting vibe. Drinks are also tasty. I had some lemon, ginger, tumeric drink that was flavourful and an immunity boost all at the same time. I also tried their seeded bread, which was interesting. Of note, they use ghee instead of butter. That's probably the only thing I can probably do without. Oh, and you pick up your own food and bust your own tables..
google avatar

Simon C.

Yelp
Healthy but tasty salads, toasts, and brown rice bowls, most with nicely boiled eggs and fresh avocado.

Pete C.

Yelp
I had take out, but the place was super cute and inviting inside. Great warm vibe, friendly staff. And the food was really top notch, fresh and delicious. A+

Sean R.

Yelp
Any dining experience is more than just the food. In this case it's about attitude and whether the staff is welcoming. The lady working the front counter made sure her bitter attitude was front and center. In bold letters her tee shirt read "Women don't owe you sh*t." On a personal level perhaps she had every reason to feel angry, but that's not the point. I don't go to a restaurant to have a helping of bitterness shoved in my face.

Victoria B.

Yelp
Inviting atmosphere. Food was fresh and delicious. Fast and friendly service. Clean. 10/10.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
Karage was awesome ramen was good but I wanted more depth in the broth. Wish they offered more beverages

Patricia M.

Yelp
My favorite spot in town because it's fresh, organic, local, and gf df friendly. Lots of we'll made options on the menu, and when I don't go for a few months, I'm always suitors with some nice new options to choose from.

Amy G.

Yelp
Service was terrible. Heartwood lost our order. When we asked about it, they dismissed our concerns. But then we overheard some staff talking in the kitchen about our order being lost. Over an hour after we ordered, the ramen finally arrived. It was just okay and definitely not worth the hefty price. Veggies tasted good and fresh but broth was flavorless. There are many other delicious dining options in Nevada city, I recommend looking elsewhere.
google avatar

Joyce U.

Yelp
Yummy, yummy bowls and toasts. Everything is fresh, staff is friendly and portions are huge. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Rita R.

Yelp
Food is great, line was really long probably because of that so service was a bit slow. But the ambiance is great and I love their drinks selection.
google avatar

Dirty D.

Yelp
This is an OK place to have a lunch and chat with friends. They faire is good quality, but nothing great. I usually hate to write about average 3 star places because I rarely have anything good or bad to say about them. Everything was just "average." However, it was very healthy.

Terry F.

Yelp
Heartwood Annex for THE WIN! Loved it. Clean, fresh, delicious, unique and creative! Come enjoy something deliciously different!

Erik W.

Yelp
Such good, healthy food here - one of our top 5 places! So fresh and delicious! Staff is super friendly, and the vibe is chill.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Food was good. Not very welcoming of people who aren't local or appear to be local. Staff felt uncomfortable while serving us. Not sure if it was a cultural issue or the fact that we were visiting the town and not visibly from there.
google avatar

Camilla M.

Yelp
My husband and I with our baby girl had lunch during our weekend in Nevada City. The place is very nice and cozy. You order from the front desk and then they call you to pick up your food. I ate the Heartwood Eatery, while my husband the fully loaded toast. My bowl was very good: I liked the combination of the ingredients, rice was tasty and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Also my husband loved his toast.

Yelp
Had a really nice lunch here. Just a cozy, relaxing place. Especially recommend the egg salad sandwich

Fawn T.

Yelp
Incredible food, top-notch service, and a warm, welcoming vibe. Every dish was delicious and the staff made us feel truly taken care of. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
So happy we found this place as we were spending the weekend in Nevada City. The people working there were extremely friendly. There is plenty of seating inside and outside and the vibe is just comforting makes you want to live there! Takes a second to get your food/drinks but they are working hard and all the food is local. We had - Ricotta Beet Toast - I am not a fan of sourdough but it was amazing! - Heartwood Bowl - so delicious and so filling - Avocado Toast - yes you can make it at home for half the price but everything was so fresh - Chocolate Tonic - so many flavors and not too sweet They also have a specials menu that has mouthwatering options!

Ridhima R.

Yelp
Loved the food and service! Shitake toast is a must have! Also had the heartwood bowl and it was good!

Yelp
Food was really good, but we waited nearly a full hour which took away from our limited time in Nevada City.

Yelp
It's a chilly December afternoon before a concert. Most Nevada City restaurants close at 2 opening again at 5. It's into that niche we found Heartwood. The casual cluttered woody interior is welcoming. The menu is goodly mix of bowls, toasts and hot beverages. These met our late afternoon appetites. The Avocado toast excels for its visual presentation as much as its fresh taste. The egg salad toast had less egg and more extras in the spread than I like. The toasted sourdough was delicious. The miso soup surprised with a mix of herbs and broth. Memorable in taste and a little too much thatch in the bowl. The help know their clientele and to us Auslanders were just a little cool, perhaps matching the late afternoon hour and the dropping temps outside. Still for a shopping afternoon lunch, I would go back.

Yelp
I love the food here! The options are super healthy, and the taste is always phenomenal. I've visited many times and will definitely keep coming back.

Yelp
Great service, healthy and flavorful options for lunch. My heartwood bowl, made heartier with sauerkraut and smoked salmon, tasted so fresh and was presented beautifully. Not a cheap lunch: $22 for the bowl (plus another $5+ for a canned sparkling tea, but it was absolutely delicious and just what I wanted. Worth it. Welcoming service and chill ambience. A gem in Nevada City.

Yelp
Cute little spot for a coffee and a treat. We were in Nevada city during the recent snow storm, and most of the businesses were closed. We were taking a morning walk through the snow and found Hardwood. We ducked in for a coffee, and we were greeted by the nicest staff. The coffees and drinks were delicious and diverse. I had their version of a golden latte with almond milk, cardamom, turmeric, etc. It was delicious! My boyfriend had a coffee that was also really good. We walked some more & then came back and treated ourselves to a yummy cookie. It's very warm and inviting inside. I will definitely go back next time I'm visiting Nevada city.
