I read about Heaven Sent closing at the end of the month and decided to head over for a weekday lunch. Admittedly, I haven't had too much fried chicken since moving to Seattle, and I can't compare it to Ezell's, but I figured hey, since it's the last chance, I might as well try it out. Surprisingly it wasn't very crowded at all on the Wednesday. Perhaps everyone's waiting for the last week?
The place is basically take out only. There aren't any tables inside so the only place to sit are the tables outside the Starbucks. I ended up eating in the car.
Three Pieces Snack, 2 Thighs + 1 Leg ($10.70) - I opted to get mixed pieces, so one thigh and one leg were spicy and the other thigh was original. Let me just say that the spicy is far superior. It's salty and very slightly spicy (in fact, if I hadn't been the one to order, I wouldn't have suspected it to be spicy). Quite pleasing flavor, but marred by the flavor of a possibly older fry oil. The interior is served hot and steaming; while there's no juice dripping down and out, the meat is not dry at all. The exterior is breaded very evenly and has a very nice hard and sharp crisp.
I found the original thigh to be much blander and drier than the spicy. The exterior breading is still quite even, but it's added in a much thicker coating, increasing the crunch factor a bit. However, it's not seasoned very much at all and is really missing the salt factor, which causes the predominant flavor to be the older fryer oil. The interior meat is also much drier, not to the point of being stringy, but noticeably more than the spicy.
This meal also comes with a roll, which is surprisingly baked in a muffin tin, making the shape much different from a traditional dinner roll. The taste is also different - while it has a bit of a dough conditioner taste, it also is very sweet, almost approaching a Hawaiian roll type sweetness. It's soft and fluffy throughout and doesn't really have a crust to speak of.
There's not much else to say. Heaven Sent serves decent to good fried chicken. Since it's closing at the end of the month, there's not much more time left to try this long time Seattle mainstay.
