I am so happy Heaven's Door Distillery has made these tours available! Mine did not disappoint! I was with four other people + the guide, who spent the first half chauffeuring us on a very comfortable cart into and through their History Park--a lovely, well-maintained, wooded area with a creek plus historical buildings from distilling days gone by. Cory did a *great* job of matching our interest and questions with fascinating history and explanations. We stopped several times on the route to learn more plus explore inside several buildings *and* to be treated with one-of-a-kind tastings at various stations throughout.
We then headed back to the current distillery where we had a similar experience regarding all the modern equipment and practices. I'm pretty much a newbie to the whiskey world, but Cory held my attention and made great sense of things. It was pretty mind-boggling--everything that goes into the whole process! Not to mention that it was also an impressive visual feast.
Last, the distillery offered each of us (for an extra fee--steep but worth it to me) our own, individual experience (with Cory's unrushed, good-humored, detailed instruction) of filling, sealing, and labeling our own Heaven's Door bottle--and naming it whatever we wanted. Is that cool or what?!
I made the trip from Michigan to Kentucky specifically for this tour. Absolutely no regrets.
Oh, and the property is extremely spacious. 160 acres of farmland and woods. And peaceful--up in the Amish hills outside Pleasureville. Even a temporary visit made for a marvelous change of pace.
