Hedera Tropical Grill

My girlfriends and I were trying to decide on where we wanted to go for dinner and came across this restaurant, it was the best decision we could’ve made! We asked our waitress for recommendations off the menu and she shared what was popular as well as what her favorites are. We decided on the seared tuna with mango salsa ($22), cilantro lime skirt steak ($23), and the lobster roll ($24). Personally, my meal was the cilantro lime skirt stake and it was genuinely so worth the price. The steak was cooked well, moist, and seasoned very well. The steak was sliced and placed on a bed of rice, with roasted potatoes and avocado salad on the side. The portion size was great and the quality was outstanding! All elements of this dish were perfectly seasoned and cooked well, everything tasted so fresh! The mint lemonade was also very very very good! Our waitress was very attentive to us throughout our visit and engaged in genuine conversation with us a few times, she was very kind and very well liked amongst us. We also shared the key lime pie and i have to say it was the best key lime pie i have ever had in my life, the price was a little hefty but as a key lime pie connoisseur i will go to any lengths for a good slice of key lime pie! This will definitely become a regular destination restaurant for us from now on!!

We visited Hedera as a last minute replacement for a restaurant that was so busy there was no parking. Our party of five was seated immediately. The waitress was personable and took our orders. The menu had many enticing choices, other than fried food. I had the Salmon. It was DELICIOUS. Surprisingly light but generously sauced! The balance of delicate flavors was refreshing, and by far one of the top 3 meals I have had on the island. The service was attentive, our waitress checked in often, and was efficient. The atmosphere - the restaurant had a small amount of tables, and dimly lit, the decor was nice, we were able to have conversation, which was much appreciated. The only thing I missed was the availability of adult beverages. As I ate my salmon, I thought how a nice glass of white wine would have made the meal perfect. With that said, you can take your bring your own should you choose. Overall I would recommend, and I will be coming again, but with a bottle of wine.

3-star - average While I enjoyed my rather expensive meal, I don't think all of it is prepared fresh. The grilled fish came across as frozen beforehand and I'm pretty sure the grilled vegetables were bagged beforehand. The coconut crusted chicken was very good, but was a bit too sweet for my taste. I was warned about that, though. I loved the coconut rice. Chairs aren't comfortable and you'll sit a bit too low for the table height. Music wasn't tropical at all, which threw off the vibe. This restaurant has potential to be great, but needs some work.

We planned to eat seafood for dinner but wanted a departure from the customary local options of breaded fish and shrimp. We gave Hedera’s a chance based on a review and were pleased with the decision as the food was delicious and service from David was superb. David was on top of it ensuring we had an enjoyable experience. We had one member in our party who can be a picky eater but the menu has enough variety that everyone could easily select something within their preference. The food has a hint of Caribbean tropical flare cooked to perfection, retaining the right moisture level. Our daughter said, “let’s not judge a book by the cover” which was wise counsel. There’s a couple odd and ends on the physical building that could be refreshed but that wouldn’t prevent us from returning. The food is worth it. The price is fair for level of cuisine. Do yourself a favor, give it a try!

Came in late, we are a large family ( 9 of us total) and we're seated with a smile. Our server was great and the food was delish. Even with coming in so close to closing everybody was super friendly . Highly recommend you will not be disappointed.

so delicious, healthy and flavorful! was so happy to find a healthier option on the island as someone with a few dietary restrictions. i got the trio skewers and the steak, chicken and shrimp were all delicious. rice and veggies were perfect sides! its a super cute place with very kind staff.

Don’t let the outside of the restaurant take away from the delicious food that waits for you inside. We had the coconut avocado slices as an appetizer, they were so good. The tropical steak tacos were amazing and rich with flavor. The fish tacos were amazing as well! Kids had a burger and Mac & cheese, which isn’t your typical Kraft Mac… husband and I ended up finishing the leftovers. Lemonade was fresh, and service was two thumbs up. If you’re on the island, definitely give this place a try!

As a regular to the island, really hoping this restaurant thrives. If you desire a HEALTHY meal out, this is your place! Compliments to the chef who prepares fantastic fresh entrees, consisting of a grilled protein with mixed veggies and rice (of which we loved the coconut rice). We went at lunch and there weren’t many cars in the parking lot. Do NOT let this deter you from giving this new spot a try. The whole time I was there I could picture the restaurant full of people one day and when that happens, the atmosphere that already has good music playing and pretty good decor will feel festive and inviting. So make it a point to help this restaurant achieve popularity and thrive! Update: we came back and have eaten here twice on this trip. We got the same Meals as before on visit 1. Visit 2, I tried the Shrimp and Mango salad that is shown in the picture. It was wonderful. Fresh and colorful… (I will ask them to add avocado next time). I tried two dressings: Mango vinaigrette which was sweet and yummy and the Pineapple vinaigrette which was very mild but good. The good news is that there is a larger crowd here for dinner so fingers crossed - again we love this HEALTHY restaurant option on the island.

Food and service was amazing. 10/10 would recommend checking this place out for dinner if you are in town and looking for tropical island food! We ordered the skirt steak, coconut crusted chicken with rice, and the Hedera sampler!

Food: Was a bit nervous saw a review that food was bland, but it definitely wasn't the case for what we got. The fish tacos were so good and seasoned so nicely, love the little spice kick to it. My so. Got the Skewer Trio with beef, chicken, and shrimp and he ate them all. Husband got the chicken which he liked especially the fact it was thinly cut. Service: awesome! Got our food fairly quickly. Despite them being out of some food items. Ambiance: modern, clean, spacious. It wasn't crowded but we love how nice it was on the inside. They even have outdoor seating.

We came to Hedera as a party of 11--and honestly, I don't even know where to start. The service? Terrible. Straight-up terrible. Saturday night, 6 tables walked out and if we wernt such a big party i probably would've too. Our server was an older man who seemed completely checked out. What made it worse was that the restaurant wasn't even busy. There were maybe 20 people total, and still--everyone looked restless and annoyed. It wasn't that they were overwhelmed... it was just painfully slow service for no reason. Our appetizer took 40 minutes to come out. You'd think the entrees would follow shortly after, but nope--those took another full hour. We weren't the only ones either; even the smaller tables around us were waiting forever. It felt like we were being ignored. Now here's the twist: the food was amazing. Like seriously, 10/10. Every dish was packed with flavor and beautifully plated. Wtf truly I was torn--I was mad at the experience but in love with the food. You can see from the photos, it's definitely worth eating... if you order to go. Bottom line: if you've got nowhere to be and a lot of patience, you MIGHT walk out happy. But if you're on any kind of schedule, skip it. Great food, nonexistent service.

Wow! Everything was super delicious! Service was decent but the restaurant flooring and ceiling could use some work for sure. I ordered the grilled ribeye chimichurri and the chimichurri was popping with so much flavor!!! The ribeye was cooked as requested too. The coconut avocado fries were a delightful surprise with so much flavor ... who knew fried avocado would taste so good! The trio skewers were large portioned and cooked to perfection! Do not pass up this place. Side note - the chairs are not plus size friendly, our server did grab me a chair that did not have the side arms but was still stiff enough to not be comfortable. Also, at the time of this review, they did not have a liquor license but they had a good selection of mocktail drinks. I'd definitely come back again for the food!!!

Wanted to eat there yesterday for dinner but was closed when their hours clearly state open on a Saturday night. Guess not - disappointing

The hubby and I were pleasantly surprised. There weren't many people and despite being out of certain things, the food was delicious. We had the Sampler platter, steak tacos, grilled chicken salad and cilantro lime skirt steak. Ended with the coconut cream pie. The background music was nice. David, our server, did a great job. The bar has a lot of potential. I would definitely come back.

I am so impressed! As we came in, we was not sure what to expect since it was empty. The server lead us to our table and explained the menu options that they had. He said it himself that everything was really good and that we would definitely like it. Sure enough, we did! The Basil Pesto Pasta with chicken was so yummy and fresh. The seared tuna was so good as well and had great flavor. The skirt steak was tender and juicy. The Coconut chicken was crispy and delicious! I loved the ambiance and how many healthy options they had. The appetizers were also great! The empanadas were crispy and hot. The stuffed jalapeños were great and not spicy. Overall, I enjoyed all the food here. This place is definitely family friendly and have many great drink options as well that do not have alcohol. The desserts were SOOOOO good. They make them in the house. The coffee was so delicious as well! We are definitely coming again!

We were a little concerned about the food quality when we arrived as the decor doesn't give a good food vibe. We were also concerned when the menu stated that no changes could be made. This would be understandable for the main part of the dish, but we were surprised when the waiter said we couldn't even substitute the vegetables for roasted potatoes. So, my wife had to order a different dish. Nevertheless, the food was amazing. We did have to flag down the waiter and wait for refills as they only had one waiter, but we saw an interview taking place while we were there. So, it seemed like they knew they needed additional help. There was a stage here, but nothing happening on it or no music playing so there really wasn't an atmosphere at all. Lastly, I'd suggest that the vines at the checkout be raised as they are right in the customers face when paying.

David was our server and he was the sweetest man! Great service and food was delicious. They don't serve alcohol but it is byob. Will definitely be dining here again.

Got seated right away and was met with nice and quick service and greeted well.They were understaffed but still got all our drinks and food extremely fast like as if everyone was working.The food was amazing My wife got the cilantro lime steak,very tender juicy and so much flavor from the vegetables to the rice to the steak.I got the cajun pasta noodles cooked perfectly and amazing sauce and flavor chicken cooked exquisitely.A must try in south padre

Closed? Not sure what their hours are, but we stopped by for dinner and it looked abandoned? Bummer as write up looked good.

We walked in and there was a 20 minute wait and the restaurant was 90% empty. We were told that they are short staffed and they didn't serve alcohol.

Oh my goodness. hedera's has the absolutely best coconut rice I have ever had in my life!!! So yummy --reminded me of previous travels. The staff was attentive and friendly. One of my family enjoyed coconut chicken and said it was great too! Definitely try that coconut rice!

Amazing flavors. If you want to eat healthy, the kebabs are amazing. We got the option where you get one of each (beef, chicken, shrimp) and they were all amazing. Plus, coconut rice! Great service by our server and we were checked in on by the manager or owner to see how everything was. Couldn't recommend this place more! Go!

My wife and I ate here during our April 2025 trip to SPI. We were disappointed. My wife had the fish tacos. The tortillas were small and very soft, almost soggy. The fish was bland. There wasn't much in the way of topping. The slaw that came with it had a funny taste and she did not eat it. I had the BBQ Chicken. This was ok. They weren't very busy yet the service was very slow. Also, they do not serve alcohol. We do not plan to go back.

No alcohol, other drinks were bland, and so was the food. No cars in the lot should have been a sign.

Honestly, everything about this place was just above average. The food, okay. The serving sizes were absolutely terrible for the prices. The service was okay, the dude was nice. The restaurant had a nice setting and was not busy when we went, there was like nobody there.

We were here in early June, and we thought the food was excellent. The waiter was on it, even though he was the only one on the floor. There were quite a few big tables of folks too. The hostess checked on us as well. The space needs an update, but they're just getting started, so I see that happening. They don't serve alcohol and I'm not sure if it's because they aren't going to or if they're waiting on the liquor license. Either way, it didn't matter to us. The food is worth the visit.

Had an amazing burger on the patio, such a great atmosphere and the staff was funny and sweet, Julie was our server and she was so kind and attentive, will definitely come back on another trip to south padre!!

We decided to try the new Hedera Tropical Grill last night. The food was delicious, and the menu looks very interesting. I hope that the building is not a jinx for them, as it has not seemed to be a lucky spot. They haven't gotten their liquor license yet, so let's hope that it comes soon. They deserve to have good fortune, and winter is a hard time to open a restaurant on the island. So, let's all give them a try. I had the shrimp skewer that came with peppers and onions and grilled veggies on either coconut rice, rice, or quinoa. It was a healthy meal, and there were a lot of really delicious shrimp. Another at our table had the grilled tuna salad, also described as really good. The tuna looked cooked to perfection with the crispy outside and raw inside. There were a number of items on the menu that I would like to try when I go back, so let's hope that they do well.

I had the trio skewers and my husband had the tropical chicken skewers and they were both excellent. We both agreed that we would order the beef skewers, but the rest was good too. The cost was reasonable and the food was delicious! I was especially impressed that the mixed grilled vegetables were done to perfection. Usually I get vegetables barely cooked, but there were cooked but not mushy or hard.

Terrific service, food and atmosphere. I travel to the island at least twice a month and will definitely be stopping here again. Steak was amazing, cooked perfectly and the portions were great! Tropical ceviche was also out of this world needed no salt or anything added as well as having a generous amount of fish and shrimp it was well worth the money. The service from our host Marz was phenomenal and took care of my party with the most care and added a great vibe to the all around experience. I will definitely be back and recommending Hedera to everyone I know!

I think the restaurant opened recently - it was pretty empty, and they don't have a liquor license (even though there's a bar area). The employees seemed unsure of themselves. The food took a long time to come out after we ordered, even though only a few tables were occupied. The food was underseasoned, cold, and did not taste good. The staff needs to work on meal pacing to keep hot items warm while the rest of the meal is prepped.

The food is delicious. The wait for the food takes a long time. No alcohol is available.

We ordered the coconut chicken sandwich with fries and the cilantro lime skirt steak both were very delicious. Will definitely get them again. Our waiter was very nice, attentive and friendly. The restaurant looked like they painted the inside and gave it a little extra attention.
