The Best Doughnuts in the Twin Cities

"Heights Bakery is a no-frills mom-and-pop bakery on Central Avenue. The cake doughnuts are a highlight, but don’t overlook the raised glazed ones, a specialty here. Local favorites include the moist, doughy apple fritters, chocolate-banana glazed doughnuts, and blueberry Bismarcks. Height’s Bakery is budget-friendly, too." - Serena Maria Daniels

Love, love, love this Bakery! I grew up in Heights sense moved many years ago but always will come back often for the delicious home made donuts and breads plus the service! My dad would bring me here as a little kid. They have been around as well as the family and staff who own and run this place for so so long! Great variety, service and best donut prices in the city!! 🍩 🍞

Google
Such a fantastic bakery, customer service has always been amazing and they have the best donuts in all of Minnesota. Wishing the owners all the best in future endeavors. This was such a special place for my family and I to visit over the years, many great memories.

Google
This is THE place in Minneapolis for authentic donuts. Fresh, delicious and classic donuts that you’ll love. Great service with a friendly attitude. The prices are extremely fair.

Amanda Ligenza

Google
We went around Easter and they had the cutest Easter cakes! Our donuts were delicious and you can tell they were made fresh and from scratch!

I have been to many of the donut shops in the state due to my husband wanting to try them all. This is THE donut shop. They make everything themselves. They have a wide selection. They will sometimes make you a special order if you call ahead. The donuts are amazing. The line is down the sidewalk on Saturday morning. Worth it. It doesn't have a seating area--it is very much take and go. This is the real deal. It's family-owned and operated. They have time off like a family business would need to, so call ahead or check their schedule. The cream cheese/fruit croissant things are amazing. Everything I've tried is amazing. This is the best in the cities, in my opinion. It's the best I've had so far in the state.

Google
Stop playing with me and just take my money! Like other reviewers I've tried plenty of donut shops over the years and this is among the best I've had. I live in White Bear Lake now and will still go out of my way for the apple filled donut. It's a must. I hear there is a cream cheese type but I have yet to see it available. Awesome variety of stuff and great service, prices are unbeatable for the quality you receive

Google
Love this bakery! Unfortunately we were late to the game in discovering them and recently learned they are closing up shop. So glad the family was able to service the community for so long and bring some of the most delicious pastries and donuts I've ever had. I particularly LOVED this strawberry cream cheese croissant thing that tasted like a toaster strudel. I will dream of that for as long as I live.

I am genuinely interested in buying this business if you are interested in selling. I work at a business just down the road, it’s a small company that my husband and I run for an absentee owner. We are both ready for a new challenge! I tried calling the number, but I understand you don’t want any messages left. I would love to connect! I was born and raised in Mpls, and I’ve worked in Northeast for many years. I’ve also been a regular customer of these amazing baked goods. 🍩I hope to see you on July 22 when I stop in!

Yelp
The finest donuts in MN. When I understand that I really need a donut it is a simple process. Get into car, drive the 8 miles from my chair to Heights on Central Ave. Return to chair & gaze at my beautiful golden cake donut for a couple minutes. Then I take a bite. Perfect.

Robert ..

Yelp
If I lived near here I would have a hard time NOT going there every day to get their freshly made cinnamon raisin bread and apple walnut bread. The donut's texture is great, they just have a bit too much icing and/or sugar in them for my liking. They have been open for about 15 years but only have 122 reviews which seems extremely low for how good most of their baked goods are, however their 4.8 star average seems correct because the few people who have tried them agree that this place is really good! If you're ever in the area, try them out because they make really good breads and pastries.

Hayes R.

Yelp
The service is wonderful. The donuts are tasty. Heights bakery is a haven to a world of wonder. Oh how I love their donuts.

Yelp
My dad loves apple fritters, so when his 60th birthday rolled around I knew I had to go get him the best fritters the city had to offer. I had not been to Height's before, but the reviews for this place really raved about their fritters so I figured they would be a safe bet. I got to Height's just after they opened...so at 5am. The smell of DELICIOUS donuts greeted me before I even got to the door, and I felt reassured by my choice of going to Height's for my dad. I went inside and there were a few other early morning customers there, and it was a Wednesday! I can only imagine how busy they are on a weekday if they were already bumping at 5am on a Wednesday. I got a box of a dozen different goodies. I got a lot of apple fritters, some cinnamon-roll maple donut, a chocolate dipped donut, and a glazed donut. They were all warm when I got them, WOW. My car smelled heavenly on the drive home. My dad loved his apple fritter(s), and thought they were fantastic. The donuts were also delicious, we tried them all and struggled to pick our favorite. I'm not usually a donut person either, so the fact that I devoured mine really was surprising. The price for all the donuts was also really affordable, I was expecting them to be more than they were. So overall, a fantastic spot! I will definitely be coming back to get more donuts soon.

Yelp
Standard old school bakery that hasn't lost its passion for delicious traditional donuts.

Yelp
I was super excited to try the baked goods after reading all the reviews and seeing the pics, but the experience wasn't the same. Lovely woman helping out asked me if I wanted a bag or box. Given the selection I opted for a bag. There was hardly any variety left and it was still earlier enough not to be close to closing time. Picked two crullers which are usually my favorite, but these two were kind of dry and the frosting had a strange synthetic after taste. Also got a danish of some kind which was okay. Prices are very reasonable. Selection was dissapointing. A few crullers, and lots of empty trays along with some smallish cookies. Not sure this visit was worth the trip, but maybe will pop in next time as early as possible.

Yelp
I drive here in the wee hours to get the BEST doughnuts in the state. Cannot speak higher for their glazed, cronut, Bismarck, the list goes on. Absolutely delicious. Priced so reasonable --- thank you so much!
google avatar

Yelp
After seeing that The Heights Bakery was on best of MN list for donuts on Yelp (and they are not far from me!) I had to try them. They thankfully have one dairy free option for me so I don't feel super left out when I get a box of donuts. The dairy free option is like a turnover filled with fruit and they are delicious warm, same day! No complaints from the donuts from my team when I get them. No gluten free options sadly and no sourdough. A really quant, sweet little shop with nice staff. Very old school.

Yelp
Okay, I only have one thing to say, get there early if you want to actually see or taste glazed donut from this place! They run out fast! I was saddened by the empty bakery shelves!! Very good bread also!!
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
Like the neighborhood bakery I had growing up, but now it's in the middle of a strip mall. Great tasty goodies, different kinds of buns & breads. Friendly staff-thank you to the young blond bakery worker! We enjoyed EVERYTHING we bought there. We really got a chuckle at the "monster" donut there!

Randy W.

Yelp
This is the best bakery in the Twin Cities in my opinion. Wished they still made date cookies though.

Christina V.

Yelp
I've never been her personally, but we often get treated to these donuts at work. They have the best cake donuts I've ever had!
google avatar

Yelp
A MUST VISIT BAKERY! My fiance and I visited early on a recent weekend morning - even being there somewhat early, there were things already halfway gone and you can tell there are many fans of this bakery! Staff were so friendly in assisting us in finding out perfect picks - everything looked so fresh and tasty! It had the welcoming feel of a small town bakery with small batched goods and friendly workers. We got a good variety of things mostly based off of staff recommendations but also what looked good. We loved each and every thing! Already planning the next time we are going to visit Heights Bakery! For sure when we host out of town company, a brunch, or want a morning date out!

Diane H.

Yelp
I've never been to Heights Bakery, and I'm sure their products are delicious, but I have to say The World's Best Doughnuts in Grand Marais, MN gets my vote.
google avatar

Maggie W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious breads, donuts and other goodies. The onion rye is a family favorite!

Andrew G.

Yelp
Outstanding pastries, rock bottom prices. These places don't exist anymore except in your dreams.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent donuts and friendly service! Their raised donut dough has a very homemade, original-type texture and taste to it. It's hard to describe but to sum up, it's quality. They also have a great variety of cake, danish donuts, fritters, and so much more. I definitely would recommend them and hope they continue to stay in business for years to come.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bakery. Nice selection of goods. Very friendly staff. Never disappointed.

Yelp
Went to Heights Bakery for the first time on Valentines Day and I'm so glad I did! Already stopped by again yesterday because I just had to have more. Everyone is so nice and helpful and made amazing recommendations! Will be back more often!

Yelp
FINALLY found delicious, calorie-free donuts!!!! Just kidding ;) but they are delicious!! Can't believe I've been down the street from this gem and haven't tried them until today. Picked up a dozen for me and my coworkers and everyone had raving reviews. From what I heard they were all great, but I tried the round raspberry jam filled donut and OMG... it was amazing!! It was huge and FULL of raspberry jam. So sweet and fresh.

Judy R.

Yelp
Best hamburger bun, breads and pastries. Convenient location with easy parking. Friendly staff. Best smells when you walk in the door.
google avatar

Trevor T.

Yelp
I've been all over the world and the heights bakery is my favorite place for doughnuts. They are the most delicious and they are not even that expensive. I was just checking to make sure they are open so now I'll leave a review. I am not surprised they have so many positive reviews on here!

NewToySmell V.

Yelp
First time coming to this location. I must say the bakery is quite cozy very kind people/workers. Theirs a good amount of sweets to pick off from plus regular bread for sandwiches/toast. Food: Every pastry was very delicious. They were well made and fairly warm. One of my personal favorites is anything with coconut. I enjoyed every bite out of my coconut donut
google avatar

Susie A.

Yelp
Love, love, love... Nothing makes my day like a cinnamon maple from Heights Bakery! Everything in the case is insanely good though. Best customer service from the sweet staff! Due to Covid only three people are allowed in the store at a time. I appreciate this as there is only so much room along the counter and it could get packed on a Saturday morning. I never have to wait outside though, as I am an early riser. ;) Get your donuts here! Worth the drive! And I will drive for donuts...
google avatar

Yelp
Height Bakery has the BEST donuts in the whole Twin Cities! Hands down. You can tell by the line outside the bakery almost every morning. The glaze is phenomenal and the apple fritters are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the apple-filled raised donuts! Their donuts are soft and pillowy and the sweet is just right - not too sweet. I highly encourage everyone and anyone to stop by Height Bakery (even if it's out of your way) to grab a dozen or 2 cause you will not be able to stop with just one donut.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Good donuts, the raised donuts have a denser consistency, I prefer a lighter fluffier raised. The cake donuts were good. Filled donuts were good too. Donut Hut has my preferred raised glazed.
google avatar

Alicia C.

Yelp
Best donuts and bread ever!!! I have grown up getting treats and bread from here. I love the Dutchy crust bread!
google avatar

Don C.

Yelp
A Real bakery! Awesomely delicious bel treats and bread and buns , would definitely recommend them

Liz C.

Yelp
They donuts are the best anywhere in MN. Always fresh. My only complaint is the run out of bear claws very early and they are the best!!
google avatar

Tatiana A.

Yelp
This is a review for their cakes, I have not tried any other baked goods. I didn't see a whole lot of reviews about their custom made cakes, so I thought I would chime in here. I took a risk ordering from this bakery for the first time for my husband's 50th birthday party, and the risk paid off! Their cakes are absolutely delicious, moist, and the simple decoration was lovely. Only reason I didn't give five stars is they only have a couple choices, and they won't do much in the way of decoration. But what they do, they do very well! Everyone at the party complimented the cakes, which were: 1) Vanilla with lemon curd filling and vanilla buttercream frosting, and 2) Chocolate with raspberry filling and chocolate buttercream. The fillings are optional, and cost a little more. But soooo worth it! You can also get marble. Definitely recommend if simple and delicious is what you are going for!

Barbara G.

Yelp
This is nearly the weekly stop for us on the way to teach school to our home schooled grandkids. Class before the donuts
google avatar

Erica R.

Yelp
Hands down one of my favorite bakeries- so many excellent options to choose from. You literally cannot go wrong with what you choose. I bring home a box of a dozen donuts (always for under $9) and my family devours every last one of them in a day... though on the rare occasion that they aren't immediately gone, they hold up well for a few days instead of being stale overnight. There's tons of bread/ cake/ cookie options as well! *Fancy donut connoisseurs* be warned- this is a no frills joint and you won't find siracha/ espresso/ bacon or some such irregular styles of donuts here, these are classics. BUT, they're classics for a reason. Really, if you're into baked goods, give it a go, it's so worth your while.
google avatar

Subira H.

Yelp
This is the best bakery around, like seriously delicious stuff! Most people I know refuse to eat bread from anywhere else. The atmosphere in that bakery is awesome too. Nice and cosy!

Bridget H.

Yelp
Called to see if they had something available in the case before coming in. The staff is always very kind about holding things and today the lady was very rude in refusing to hold anything. I felt very put off by the change in attitude after supporting them for 15 years.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Everything I've ever gotten here is phenomenal. Their date cookies are my mom's favorite thing on Earth, she literally told me she loved me more than the day before the last time I picked them up for her. Their donuts are fresh and reasonably priced. I'm a big fan of their filled bread too. Made french toast with their raspberry bread this morning. Run, don't walk, next time you're in the area for some dang good donuts.
google avatar

Nate M.

Yelp
After consistently hearing about this as one of the top bakeries in the cities we had to pick up a couple donuts. They didn't have extravagant options like some of the others, but they do the classics well.
google avatar

Abimelec G.

Yelp
Very small place but good selection, something different from other bakeries, I had a fried croissant which was really good. They just need to improve the place make it looks better. My opinion.
google avatar

Alik W.

Yelp
So far, we have gotten only donuts from this place, but they are donut-a-licious. A wide variety of choices, both filled and frosted, both cake-based and yeast-raised. There are things that call themselves cronuts, which are quite frankly huge, you should bring a friend. I am not sure they are quite croissant-like enough to merit the name. They're closer to a fritter minus the apples. They are priced old school, super cheap, and you will make a lot of people happy if you show up with a dozen or two. Our work team devoured them. One is always uncertain about coffee at a traditional bakery, but it's pretty solid joe here. You won't be happy if you're the type who needs a pumpkin spice half-soy no-gluten mochacaramelcino, but if you just want a basic cup of black with your donut, it'll do.

Aziza M.

Yelp
Friendly staff been here in Mn for 7 years and stopped in at times daily..Been to another local bakery and this is the one I prefer to go back to the most .They have a great selection of pastries and donuts. always fresh and taste amazing.Only thing I wish is if they opened Sundays..
google avatar

Mel O.

Yelp
Heights Bakery is hands down the best bakery in NE (I can't say the cities because I haven't eaten all the donuts). Glam Doll, Cardigan, and all those others are good, but if you want a truly delicious, classic donut, Heights is the place. I've had a variety of donuts there and all have been fantastic. Their cronut is RIDICULOUS! So good! And their prices are good. I usually get 18 (for work) and it's about $25. Their bread is also fantastic. And the woman who always helps me (short dark hair) is so nice! Get there early because they do sell out of some types. The only bad thing I can say is I wish they were open Monday's since Monday's suck and donuts would help make it better.

Reem S.

Yelp
Best Doughnuts in town we always find fresh bakes goods! They are so friendly and always have the tastiest frostings!
google avatar

Justin J.

Yelp
We were in the area for a wedding and had to try this no-frills bakery. It definitely did not disappoint. The two donuts we got were extremely soft and the perfect sweetness. It was not overly sweet or overpowering. I had a hard time splitting with my wife. I may have taken an extra bite or two when she wasn't looking

Davie D.

Yelp
I like the donuts here a lot. My go to place in the area. However, I often find that they are closed during listed hours various hours listed as open online and that makes it difficult

Terence S.

Yelp
Great local bakery. ! I truly recommend that you pay them a visit. I Love those Apple Fritters!

Ed P.

Yelp
One of a vanishing breed of real old time bakeries featuring a wide selection of classic donuts along with the heavenly cronut. (Donut made with croissant dough).
google avatar

Trevor G.

Yelp
Really good flavor in all of the donuts we tried. The Cronut was really tasty, but it's near impossible to finish the whole thing without getting in a sugar coma. The Blueberry Cake Donut and the Old Fashioned Glazed were good also. They also have tons of donuts in back that aren't in the glass case so it helps to be a regular and know what you want.
google avatar

Halley S.

Yelp
One word defines Heights Bakery: terrific. Prices are very reasonable. Every thing that I have actually tried has been really tasty. The team members are all incredibly nice and welcoming. Loved it. Will definitely return!
google avatar

Joni C.

Yelp
We've been here a couple times, satisfied each time. Nice classic donuts. They have something each of the 6 members in our family love. Glazed, long johns, sprinkles, blueberry cake, cinnamon sugar, old fashioned... Their bread is also good. It is not a sit down inside type place, very small with one counter.

Darin M.

Yelp
Can't beat it! The best donuts and rolls, not to mention bread, in the good old USA!!
