A Brookside favorite for from-scratch baking, breakfast sandwiches, and weekend morning plates. Condé Nast Traveler has praised its cinnamon rolls; locals come for the pastries and stay for warm, community-focused hospitality.

I would highly recommend checking this place out. A small menu with a good variety of choices. Had the mushroom toast and hibiscus limeade tea. One of the best mushroom dishes I have ever eaten, the tea was flavorful and refreshing. Honey oats desert was fire, bought four to take home. Staff was awesome.

One of my favorite spots in KC. My husband and I have to make a point not to come here every weekend for breakfast. The staff is super friendly, the pastries are delicious and I’ve never been disappointed with any meal I’ve ever gotten here. It’s very family friendly and an easy place to bring a baby or kid. I always bring out of town visitors here - you really cannot go wrong. They also have a lot of vegetarian friendly options.

Google
The food was all incredible. The breakfast sandwich was so tasty and had a delicious jam in it

Had lunch there. Daily menu so items and specials vary. Had Caprese sandwich and it was delicious! They have a large variety of baked goods and breads. Tried the lemon goat cheese cheesecake and it was so good. Will be back!

Google
Superb independent bakery with excellent food. Healthy wholesome and tasty. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert and buy some fresh bread to take home.

Omg, this savory croissant pastry I got is amazing! 🥐 and they were playing island in the sun by weezer!

Google
I come here a few times a month and my favorite dishes are the avocado toast and the breakfast burrito! They are a lil pricey but the quality is superb! I love the aesthetic inside. The scenary on the patio is very pretty in the warmer months with the Vines and sunflowers!

Google
The BEST breakfast sandwich I have ever had ( veggie biscuit sandwich homemade biscuit) , and the homemade pop tart .......wow!

Yelp
Their pastries and herbed breads are bar none, and I always try to come early so I can have my pick. This last visit, I popped in and grabbed a pistachio apricot scone. It had the perfect snappy outside, with a soft and deliriously flavorful inside. Juicy, somehow, but maintained that quintessential scone in shape and texture. Incredible. A++++, no notes. Oh, and everyone looks so happy working there.

Yelp
I love this place. The food is so yummy and I like the rotating specialty menu options to try different things; specifically the specialty breakfast sandwiches. The coffee sizes are pretty standard. The service is friendly and it's usually always busy. I love the atmosphere with plants, although it can get a bit loud.

Yelp
The ambiance was relaxed and enjoyable, with great music setting the tone. People were working on their laptops or chatting casually, creating a lively yet laid-back atmosphere. The air conditioning was excellent, and the charming decor added character to the entire space. A perfect spot to unwind or get some work done! The tuna melt was delicious!

Yelp
I haven't been to Heirloom Bakery in quite some time and honestly, I thought there was more to the menu in the past. Maybe it was because it was before Covid; however, there's still a continual businesses to this breakfast and lunch place. After reading reviews and seeing items online, I thought there would be more gluten-free options. Now that I went in person for breakfast I realized the menu was limited as an individual who is trying to avoid gluten. I wish there an option for customization even at a cost, such as gluten-free bread or biscuits. I won't lie. The staff seem a little bit preoccupied with the businesses, which is not a bad thing since there's a continuous flow of customers and we didn't wait long for what we ordered. This morning was extremely pleasant weather, so the outdoor seating was quite lovely when we had our dogs with us. Since I was sharing majority of what was ordered here is one of the few things that I was able to order gluten free food, carrot muffins (only one of two gluten free pastries they had(other option was gf honey bites)) and Granola Parfait Everyday Vegan Granola ( this was the only gf item on the breakfast menu). Both gluten free items were good but not earth shattering. My wife got the blackberry earl grey scone, which had gluten so I didn't try and said there weren't a lot of blackberries. Drinks we ordered were Pumpkin Horchata with a shot of espresso and Black Sesame Vanilla Latte, both drinks hit the spot. Thoughts... - Food: B+ - Drinks: A+ - Atmosphere: A-

Yelp
I came here for lunch with my dad. We ordered a honey lavender biscuit, key lime bar, a hibiscus limeade, apple ham and cheese sandwich with onion jam, and a soup. I thought the limeade and key lime bar were very delicious. The lavender honey biscuit was just okay to me but I did appreciate how fresh the dough tasted and how smoothly it pulled apart. The sandwich I thought was interesting I had never tasted anything like it before with the onion jam and apples. My dad really enjoyed both his sandwich and the soup. Regarding the ambiance, I enjoyed how I could look behind the register and see the staff making pastries, it was really cool! The atmosphere was very quaint and rustic farm home. There were not many people there so we were serviced very quickly. Overall it's a very cute restaurant/cafe I just think it's not my personal preference. I would definitely come back though to try their other pastries.

Yelp
Best biscuit sandwiches and bakery items are delicious! A little expensive/pricey. Great vibes and comfortable environment.

Yelp
Heirloom Bakery and Hearth is a beautiful restaurant with a cozy vibe and a lot of natural light. The parking situation isn't great but it's in an area where parking lots are small. Upon walking in we were not greeted but instead felt rushed to order. It was my first time in the restaurant and no one was behind us so I needed a minute with the menu. The person behind the counter seemed annoyed which did not leave a great first impression. After ordering at the counter, we made our way to the dining area where we found a few tables in need of cleaning. Our food came out quickly and it was beautiful. The tomato toast I ordered was truly divine. After we had finished our meal, we were uncertain about whether to leave our dishes or bus our own table. We saw some bussing tubs near a wall so we did it ourselves. No big deal, it was just a little confusing. All in all the food made up for any negative parts to our time at Heirloom and I will certainly be back.

Yelp
First time here. We worked at the bar for a couple of hours. The pop tart and breakfast sandwich hit the spot. Everything we had was delicious. We will be back.

Yelp
I met up with a buddy to study at Heirloom Bakery & Hearth one weekend morning. It was busy but thankfully he had arrived early and was able to snag us a seat inside. On a good weather day, it would be a miracle to snag a patio seat though. Anyway, I woke up hungry that day so I tried their egg & cheese biscuit sandwich and a cold brew. It was heavenly. Now that I'm writing about it, I'm craving another one of those biscuits! A local breakfast must-have! Parking lot is small, you might have to street park!

Yelp
Really cute place with garden boxes out front growing fresh produce and an open kitchen where we could see the staff cutting up fresh strawberries! We had an orange cranberry scone and a strawberry mint chia scone, both of which were solid but not the best. If you love scones like me, I'd probably try something else here as they lacked flavor and were more cakey. We did like the mint, not a flavor you find often. The rosemary shortbread was superb - super buttery and flaky. We had a latte and cold brew to top it off. Definitely will come back as the breakfast food looked delicious and fresh and the atmosphere was very homey.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich is so good. Friendly, open and airy atmosphere! I need 85 characters so I'm writing a little more.

Yelp
Heirloom has been one of my favorites for years. The breakfast sandwiches, salads, and scones are wonderful, and the lattes are great. Beautiful place to sit for a while.

Yelp
I loved my veggie breakfast sandwich (the biscuit is DENSE but delicious) and loved my peanut butter latte. It's such a beautiful space to work in, I sat there for 2 hours on my laptop getting things done and enjoying the atmosphere (this was a Thursday morning so it wasn't so busy- I know the line is out the door on weekends!)

Yelp
Finally went out to Heirloom after seeing some post on instagram and I'm SO glad I did. It was amazing! The food was a 10/10 hit. I always try quiche at new places and they had something a bit different which was Strata. It was similar to quiche but with bread chunks baked in as well. It was different from a typical quiche in a great way! The burrito was loaded and the salsa added a fresh flavor to it! The pastries were baked to perfection and you can actually see the bakers working on all of the baked goods right at the front of the cafe! The strawberry rhubarb kouign amann was perfectly flakey and not too sweet. I had my eye on some other pastries like the lavender biscuit! Lastly, the coffee was tasty however, they offer seasonal flavors like black sesame, which I would've loved to try out. But, the drink menu was hard to see when ordering so I didn't know about it until I had ordered. Overall Heirloom offers delicious, high quality, fresh food and baked goods. Definitely check them out and try some new things!

I feel bad for everyone who has not experienced Heirloom Bakery !! Good homey food and always feel so welcome.

Yelp
We were given the recommendation to try this place months ago and a birthday gift card treat was the final push we needed to step foot into heirloom. First impression: It's lovely. I love the small gardens outside that I assume will be filled with fresh veggies when the season comes, spacious parking, and clear signage! The interior is thoughtfully crafted with a homestead aesthetic. I loved the colorful bird wallpaper, cement blocks as planters, and crayon station the most. They also had fiddle instrumental music playing silently in the background as an ambiance enhancer. We were immediately greeted upon entering the doors and our server was kind enough to give us the rundown of what was popular and good for first timers. To eat: I tried the specialty breakfast sandwich which included fried egg, cheese, and bacon on a cheddar & chive biscuit. Phew the biscuit was heavenly. My husband enjoyed the same thing with fig jam and a butterscotch cinnamon roll. To drink: the Malt chocolate latte with almond milk - yummy! Consensus: I'll be back! From the homemade Pattie's, bread, biscuits, and more...there are so many lovely things I want to enjoy. My sisters, husband, and myself had a pleasant morning experience here.

Yelp
Super adorable bakery with a cute vibe! The service was kind & patient despite the line. I got a honey rosemary latte with a veggie breakfast biscuit (with yummy caramelized leeks! So unique!) and a honey lavender biscuit to go. The latte was decent but the stars here are definitely the baked goods!! The biscuits (both the savory and the sweet) were probably the best I have ever put in my mouth!! Buttery and crumbly but not dry, with no gloopy doughiness in the middle - just perfection! I will definitely be back when the weather cools down so I can sit on the lovely patio and nom on these delicious biscuits in every flavor variation.

Yelp
The food was amazing - I had biscuits and gravy, my husband had a breakfast sandwich, and my daughter had a pb&j with fruit and husband and I had coffee. It was amazing food and such a great atmosphere.

Yelp
We got avocado toast, chocolate croissants & pop tarts! My husband loved the avo toast it hit the spot for $10 the croissant and pop tarts are so home made! I can taste the blueberry in the pop tart without the overpowering taste and sweetness it's so subtle I love it! The croissant layers are fantastic. The prices are a little higher 4.75 for pastries but not bad! I would love to come here again to try the bread
google avatar

Natalie W.

Yelp
Came for a breakfast and tried the breakfast sandwiches. I made my own with mixed greens while my boyfriend ordered one from the menu. The breads were great and so was the pumpkin cheesecake we also ordered. Unfortunately, some of my greens were old and ruined the taste a bit, but all in all, great food!

Yelp
Grabbed lunch with a friend at heirloom bakery. The place is adorable, it has a great vibe. Specials are listed when you walk in. Order at the counter, and take a peek at all the fresh made goodies! I got the muffaletta and took home a nutter butter. The sandwich was huge and delicious and my husband really enjoyed the nutter butter. I would definitely go back to try more things

Yelp
This was the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had! I was craving a good sandwich and everything in it was great! This sandwich was sweet and savory, very good.

Yelp
Visiting for the Bears game and grateful no one accosted me in my gear day of. Vibrant local bakery with delicious coffee and tea drinks and wonderful baked goods.

Yelp
Wow! What a great place. We were in KC for a wedding and found this little gem. We will be back With our doggo since they pet friendly! Loved that they have a little garden outside which I assume they use to make their yummies. So glad we found them!

Yelp
I stood in line and waited for the appealed to kick in. After waiting a good few minutes I was told I had to wear a mask even those already vaccinated because the neighborhood apparently requested (why?????) fairly off putting at first, then you order and ask for a breakfast burrito and coffee, the magic total you ask: $17!!! Are you out of your damn mind????????? Off putting service, out of this world prices made me walk out of this joint. How do people allow this price gouging???? 1star

Yelp
I can't recommend this place enough!! Their food is incredible! And the staff is super sweet and helpful. I also love the modern and homey vibes of the shop, not to mention they have a gorgeous Basset Hound that hangs out front. They also fresh bake so many of their offerings and it is awesome to watch. I got the cinnamon roll, specialty biscuit sandwich, and hibiscus tea with limeade. My friend got the avocado toast, the apple creme galette, and the cold brew coffee. Everything was amazing. I wish I lived here so I could visit more.

Yelp
Love this bakery. They have a delicious treats like pop tarts, biscuits, and cookies. They have a great breakfast and lunch menu with all kinds of sandwiches. Large seating space inside and outside

Yelp
Out of the top 4 breakfast spots in the Brookside/Waldo area, McLains, Classic Cookie, Homegrown and Heirloom. This is by far one of the best. I had the Biscuits and Gravy, defines the meatiest sausage gravy, unlike Homegrown. This place was packed already at 8:00am. Parking spaces were tight and full. Excellent service.

Ciera B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places on I always have a specialty breakfast biscuit sandwich, which changes every time I come. I also LOVE the pop tarts, they are the best I've ever had and I've traveled the country looking for a runner up! I always have a honey rosemary latte, or black sesame vanilla latte which is 10/10. Hands down my favorite breakfast spot in KC. The food, the menu, the quality, the ambience, watching happy employees making fresh pop tarts while enjoying a hot latte with love and breakfast biscuit sandwich is my happy place. Thanks to everyone here for being awesome!

Yelp
Sooooo good!!!!!!! The flavor of everything is amazing and tastes very fresh. The workers are all super nice and friendly. The workers made sure we had everything we needed and helped a lot. Beautiful interior and exterior.

Yelp
Excellent food and coffee, a real gem to have in the neighborhood! Yelp says I need to write more to post the review so now I have.

Yelp
Bought an "Apple Bacon Tart" in addition to apples and and bacon, it had cheese, onions, and mustard in it. I expected it to be sweet, but it was savory, which isn't a problem, but it tasted foul, like garbage. I only took one bite, but it made me gag, and I couldn't swallow it. After I brought it back up to the front to warn the man at the counter that it tasted foul, like garbage, he said "Ah, hmm. Sorry." When I half-heartedly asked for something else, he said, "Hmmm, eh..." I felt uncomfortable, so I said, "If you don't want to replace it with something else that's fine." He said, "Yeah, sorry." I said, "Alright, I'll just throw this away, thanks." I should've stood my ground and asked for a replacement, that's on me, but people shouldn't have to ask when they're grossed out by your food. I was with someone, they couldn't even take a bite to try it. That's why this review would have one star. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture before I threw it away, but it didn't look bad. We also got coffee, which was pretty good. I got the special biscuit sandwich. The "onion marmalade" and goat cheese were a bit strong and overpowered the egg and a little bit over the bacon, but still a decent sandwich, the biscuit was perfect, excellent texture, nice crumble, a little flakey, but not too delicate so it worked well for a sandwich. Spinach was fresh. Egg was over medium, but I prefer easy, though I didn't ask for that specifically. My partner got the special breakfast bowl. The egg was perfectly soft boiled, the bacon and chicken had a nice char on the edges, and the vegetables were fresh. There was a little too much rice, half the bowl was rice. Gratiitous rice may not be an issue for some, but would likely be less of an issue if there was a little more fat in the bowl, maybe as an aioli or a drizzle of olive oil, or avocado. It just seemed like the bowl was too lean, again this might be preferential. Our food took 30 minutes almost on the dot to come out, which isn't too bad considering the quality of ingredients. The environment is very warm, earth tones everywhere, lots of wood and hanging plants, clay, beige. Some of the plants look worse for the wear, and have mealy bugs on them, which guests might need to avoid touching if they hope to not transfer them to their plants at home. Over-all, I think this place has okay food, the coffee is good, it's a good place to bring a kid, or sit down with a hot drink to read, draw, or write. I probably won't come here for food again.

Yelp
Wonderful bakery. Great for breakfast or lunch and we'll worth the drive from Overland Park.

Kaveh N.

Yelp
They have very good pastry in general. But there are some flaws they need to work out. The almond croissant has a cylinder of marzipan piped in that just sits there in the bottom. A glob of bitter almond is something you shouldn't expect in a croissant. An apple galette is usually sweet. If you disagree, that's ok. But if it's savory, maybe you should label it "savory apple galette", or better yet "apple and bacon galette" to suggest that it's savory. Otherwise someone may ruin their ice cream with the flavor of mustard, or worse yet, surprise a vegetarian who was hoping for dessert. The sourdough bread, I could swear was made from challah dough (it's even yellow like challah, and doesn't taste sour). I would urge the owner to pay their bakers to take a weekend trip to Cleveland and try bread from Leavened. Or better yet, a weekend trip to San Francisco for a visit to Tartine.

Katherine K.

Yelp
Amazing vibes and great food and coffee! I got an iced latte with caramel and it was the best I've had in awhile! The bakery items are soooo yummy and I recommend you get some bread to take home! I would recommend this place to anyone:)

Yelp
Nice, quiet family environment just east of main Brookside. Scone & latte were very good.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
Loved the gorgeous ambiance of this location. I tried the lavender latte and it was SO SO good. I'd like to go back soon to try their artesian breads which looked delicious. Also loved that they had crayons and paper to keep the littles entertained while dad & mom enjoyed a delicious brew
google avatar

Jonny C.

Yelp
My first and second times here were in the same day. The beer bread is really soft, the person at the counter said they think(?) it's made with Boulevard IPA. Savory, but not overpowering flavor. The pop tart was really good, flaky, and as sweet as it looks. I shared it, but could have eaten a whole one (especially with coffee, or milk).
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
They require masks, but the inside is open for seating. There are also tables outside. They have a ton of pastries and food. I got the mixed berry poptart and an iced mocha. They accidentally made my mocha hot, but they quickly corrected it. Both were delicious.

Taylor A.

Yelp
Cute spot but pastries are incredibly average sadly. I tried a couple of them - the ham and cheese croissant pictured. All of the ham was smashed on one side, and it just didn't taste like anything. Reminded me of something that would sit on a breakfast buffet.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Got the cinnamon roll today and it was very tasteless. No cinnamon. A lot of icing with some caramel flavor. Couldn't make it through it and I typically love cinnamon rolls! Plus the wait was very long and they seemed very disorganized in there.

T M.

Yelp
The place is really cute, but the service was terrible. Unfortunately the cashier made the experience unfavorable, she seemed annoyed with any request such as "my we request no sugar"?. Because we have a diabetic 1 in the group. Our food was okay, honestly I expected a bit more. I ordered the peach toast and the peaches were very dirty, so we didn't eat it. We requested plant based milk in our latte and got regular milk and it was very sweet. Not a great experience today, hopefully this is a one off. As a group we ordered and would order again: Breakfast burrito Parfait Breakfast sandwich

Yelp
I wasn't intending to come to Heirloom today, but I'm so glad I did. After a couple of my usual study spots in Brookside were full, I popped by Heirloom for a quick bite to eat and a not-so-quick study session. For breakfast I ordered a biscuit with bacon and cheese. It was small, barely larger than my first, but very filling and absolutely delicious. The biscuit was a heavy cheese and chive, and toppings were generous. I was totally blown away and definitely plan on coming again for another. A couple hours later, I started getting hungry again and opted for a blueberry poptart. This isn't anything like the poptarts you get at the store; the crust is flaky and buttery while the filling is gooey and delicious, with whole blueberries. You can tell it's homemade, and although I question the $4.50 price tag, I enjoyed it a lot. I'm not sure if I will come back to Heirloom as a study spot, on account of only having found a single outlet perched in the corner of the restaurant, but I certainly hope to come back for some treats! If you're looking for a local bakery with some premium items (albeit, also with premium prices), I'd highly recommend dropping by.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
I don't often splurge on a straight up bakery trip, but had to stop in after seeing all the treats on Heirloom's Instagram this month (Thanksgiving/fall goodies). The feta, kale, squash scone was buttery and savory. Would totally get again. I got the tahini chocolate chip cookie on my quest to find the best chocolate chip cookie in KC, but this one is a twist! It's more crispy than chewy (not really my thing) and covered in sesame seeds, which was actually kinda interesting. Wouldn't get that one again, but glad I tried it! Heirloom's dining room is closed (during COVID), so you walk up to a window and order and they bring it out to you on the patio. Very smart!
google avatar

Kirbi Y.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwiches are to die for and, per my 75 year old father, "They have exceptional chocolate chip cookies."
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
I just started working in the area about a month ago and finally got to stop here and grab coffee and some breakfast. I got the chive biscuit and a latte, both were amazing! Can't wait to go back and try more!

Jerilin N.

Yelp
Delicious! The 'pop tart' is so tasty! Happy I stumbled upon this little gem while in town for work. Everything looked so good I ended up ordering more than I thought I would and everything was amazing! I took some back home with the intent to share with my family but ate it all myself. Sorry, (not sorry) fam!
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
What a quaint breakfast and lunch place. Service was excellent. The only negative was the latte was not as hot as I wished and the avocado on the toast was brown. My husband loved the chocolate chip cookies. He got two!
google avatar

Kelli H.

Yelp
The chai tea is one of the best in the city! Also recommend the cinnamon roll and the pop tarts! Enjoyed going here to work and watched while they prepped the food for the day. I'll definitely be going back!
