⚠️ DRAMATIC REVIEW — BEWARE ⚠️ Helen’s in Downtown Jersey City, you owe me an apology… and dry cleaning. I ordered shrimp Parmesan, garlic bread, and a Sprite. After fighting with the system just to place my order — sitting in my car on the phone trying to get it through — I finally thought I’d have a decent lunch. I thought. The delivery guy shows up on a bicycle (okay cool), but refuses to bring the food inside, even after I TIPPED him WELL. I go outside to get it, come back in, sit down, open the soda… and then disaster strikes. The Sprite explodes like a shaken-up firecracker. Soda EVERYWHERE. My clothes — soaked. My food — drenched. My phone — sticky. My mood? Unrecoverable. Mind you — I’m at WORK. Wearing wet clothes. Sticky in 100° weather. Smelling like a combo of shrimp parm and Sprite. And now I’m cleaning up a mess instead of enjoying lunch. I called the store to explain and all they had to offer me was a whopping $2.65. Not a new meal. Not even a refund. Not even an “I’m sorry.” I threw the food in the garbage and honestly… that’s where the experience belongs. 0 stars. Helen’s, do better. Because this ain’t it.

For high quality pizza - look for a different spot. For a cheap cheese slice, look for a different spot. Pizza was too expensive ($4 for a cheese slice) and below average. It’s not terrible however, and might be worth it for those who need a quick bite before catching a train. Inside it is just a normal pizza place - and there’s some outdoor seating. Nothing special but also not dirty.

Some of the most consistent food you can get in Jersey City. Have been coming here for years and no complaints.

Good pizza! Fresh and Hot. I do wish the pizza slices were actually cut. It was hard to eat the pizza in slices as it could have been cut better. The garlic knots had too much garlic for my taste. I wish they had white sauce options for the pizza sauce.

Average pizza, only ever had it delivered. They give delivery drivers on bikes the flimsiest 12 inch box. The last two orders I've placed with them have arrived completely crushed with missing items and broken quality seals - I definitely blame the driver for part of this but do you really expect a paper thin pizza box to travel well when most delivery people in the area use bikes...

This was the first time coming to this pizzeria. Customer service was definitely as close to perfect as you can get. But they get a 4 star because of their pizza. Don't get me wrong, pizza was definitely good, but I've tasted better(I only had pizza, so I can't comment on anything else). They do have a large menu of different foods, which is definitely a plus. I would definitely come back with my family and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. What's even better if that right outside the streets are closed off so that no cars are passing by whatsoever. So one can sit outside and enjoy their food in peace. Prices seem average to a little above average.

Had a veggie with pepperoni pizza - Beyond imagination Such a good crust, portion and toppings. I loved it. It was so fresh, just out of oven.

For as expensive as this pizza is I definitely wasn’t expecting this mess. We ordered pizza for children at the school and the slices were hardly cut. I had to use a plastic knife to try and cut the slices myself. Half of the entire 3 pies were dough covered in sauce because majority of the cheese was off of the pizza and on the side of the box as seen in the picture. Never again

White pizza's mozzarella cheese was not good, no cheese pull whatsoever and the quality just seemed bad. The ricotta parts were good though. Pepperoni pizza was not cheesy enough. Flavor was lacking overall. Pizza came out pretty fast, but one of the employees kept messing up how to ring up our order. Inside was sorta greasy, fast food vibes.

Helens is part of the old guarde on Newark Ave. Pizza slices are generously sized. I got 1 pepperoni slice to sample the sauce and 1 white with broccoli. Crust is appropriately thin and crispy on the outside, and the sauce is slightly sweet, not excessively so. Not usually a sweet sauce person but I was fine with this. Whole thing cost 9.60. Pretty good, maybe not the best slice I've ever had but still good. The white was less impressive. The ricotta was giving cream cheese frankly. A shame considering and part of why I marked down. Anyways worthwhile slice if you are in the area.

A good local pizza joint. Very crowded for a Friday lunch hour. Plenty of folks here from students, young families, and single professionals. Tried their Hawaiian specialty, extra hot and crispy. Delish.... Will try their other pies at a future date.

Tried the wings here during pride and it was amazing full of flavor crispiness and overall goodness the service was fast. Got my wings and no time and the ambience is very welcoming if you want to sit down and enjoy your food.

I attempted to get food here. I was at the counter for a couple minutes but was ignored by all the employees. So I very loudly said "is there anybody that can help me" and they still continued to ignore me. I'm really not sure why. I think that if you are the person that makes the pizza, it doesn't hurt to say things like "you can order over there", and if you are the person who takes the order but are busy, you can say things like "I'll be right with you". I'm not sure how a customer can walk into a business and their presence not be acknowledged. I don't like to write reviews like this but Helen's Pizza deserves 0 stars for ignoring me the way they did.

So on my last visit, we had a little incident. Out of loyalty, I'm not gonna drop a star. Why? Because my family has been eating here since 1969 and this was only ONE incident out of 52 years. But, I am gonna say what happened to make you future patrons more aware to pay attention to the prices when they're ringing you up. Long story short, girl at the register tried to over charge me THEN argued with me about why she was over charging me by claiming: 1) The Menu was old (lie) 2) It was higher because of the tax (lie) 3) An extra credit card charge (lie) One of her Coworkers came over and helped her out on the register. He rang me up correctly. So I'm guessing the girl is new? The owner came over to check what was going on and I told him straight out she was trying to over charge me. He apologized. She, however, did not apologize. She tried to argue with me when she was the one who made the error. Then, she started talking about me in Spanish to her coworker as if I didn't understand her. So! Be mindful of the prices when you order because you may be overcharged, which personally I don't think is okay. Did I mention my family has been eating at Helen's since 1969? 52 years! I'm happy to say Helen's is still serving delicious food. Seems Italian, but the family is Greek! Highly recommend trying the other items on their menu! Pizza is good, but you gotta try the other items as well! The food...still delicious! 52 years in my family and they're still consistent! A staple pizzeria in the heart of JC. I'm glad they're still around :) I will always hit up Helen's whenever I visit JC.

Stopped by for a few slices. The pizza was a bit on the expensive side at 4.5/slice but I suppose that's expected these days. The slice had good texture but was overly salty. Every bite made my brain hesitant to take another bite. Weird pizza eating experience. Service was reasonable for a pizzeria.

After reading all the bad reviews I have almost always been pleasantly surprised by the food here. Have ordered so many times, tried a variety of their pizza slices and they have been good so far. My favorite is their white slice. It's always fresh with enough cheese and Italian herb. Even the crust is flavorful. Recently I ordered a Margherita Pizza and it was delicious ! It was bursting with basil and garlic flavor with a lot of mozzarella cheese. Sometimes the service can be slow but otherwise pizza is decent

PROS: Great prices, friendly staff, good coupons, and spacious for a pizza joint. Open late and serving the crowds of people at night. the wings and pizza were good and the place was clean as well. CONS: Took a while for the food to cook. Normally not as long in other pizza places OVERALL: I highly recommend coming to this joint. Whether you're bar hoping or just want a nice lunch in mid day

The service here is the worst. I called to find out the status of an order I placed an hour and a half ago and was met with an attitude. I was told we are backed up, it's does not happen every night but we are backed up, I don't know what you want me to tell you. Do you want me to call the driver and tell him to not deliver your order? They could not even tell me how much longer it would be. If you can't deliver the orders timely maybe you should try not taking so many orders. Also maybe you should not tell your customers at the time the order is placed that it will be delivered in 1/2 an hour! I don't have high hopes for the quality of this order either since supposedly the driver left with the order and had 4 other deliveries as well.

I have been ordering pizza from Helen's for over 30 years. On Monday night, it was THE worst pizza I have ever ordered. I always ask them to not burn the bottom crust. Well, it wasn't burned, it was charred. Half of the pizza was inedible and went straight into the trash. That is the LAST pizza I will ever order from Helen's. From now on it will be Carmine's or any place other than Helen's.

I wanted to like this place as it reminds me of the typical nyc pizzeria or sbarros but the pizza is not good. The dough taste yeasty and flavorless.

Ordered our usual grilled chicken and broccoli pie from Helen's since we were in the hood. Called ahead for pick up. Located on part of the Newark Avenue strip closed off to cars which makes it extremely difficult to find parking. Parked and walked several blocks to pick up the pie. The pie itself is well presented. The ratio of toppings was good. The grilled chicken had an unrecognizable taste almost like a hint of bbq. The crust was crunchy and a little doughy. The bottom was nice and dry (a wet center of pie is the worst). Overall it was ok but expect a little more for my pizza dinner. I would stop in for a slice if in the neighborhood but would not make a special trip to dine there due to the traffic and difficulty with parking.

We had gone to Helen's for a quick pizza lunch during the last year, but when it was suggested for dinner, I wasn't excited. My daughter swore the dinners were great, and we sent her and her husband out to pick up. We had wings, an antipasto salad, baked ziti, spaghetti with chicken and pesto sauce, and chicken Marsala. It was a feast, and yes, I was wrong to doubt.

We got confirmation on our order at 1028 on slice. We went to the location and found out that they will not provide a personal cheese pie, and chicken finger & fry. They offered free slices, but the slices looked liked they were made first thing in morning. Really immature service. The cleaning boy even laughed at us when we stated we could go somewhere else for better service. This place is an embrasment for 3rd party services. Unfortunately, I can't rate on the food, but due to the services, I'll give this establishment a .1 out of 5, I'm more then happy to hear a response. Thank you, Chad

Helen's fell wayyy off over the years in terms of pizza. My parents went to school with the kids so this place is very old school JC! If I know u know!! I love the grilled chicken gyros but sadly the pizza is just not good anymore. I couldn't get through the slice, they have a huge menu or other funny items!

How you do this bad pizza in the capital of pizza? Service was self and ok. Location is central and easy to reach.

Order from Uber eats the food was really good! But tonight we ordered and after my boyfriend was eating some of his food he notice a small dead fly in his pasta! Just disgusting! Don't eat here!

Ordered through Uber eats, so probably my first problem, but I paid for a full Sicilian pie and got the weakest little square slice I've ever seen. Probably re-heated slice made earlier in the day. Cannolis were good tho. Giving a 1/10 on following directions, 7/10 on desserts.

My goto delivery spot in JC Try their meatball sliders. A meatball in a garlic knot! Always on point

Pizza is good, not the thinnest crust. Grilled chicken in garlic/olive oil with broccoli is good. Good service. Value is good for the price.

I ordered their Penne Marinara with grilled chicken, and it was inedible. I had a little bit and just had to throw the rest of it out. $11.25 down the drain.The grilled chicken - was it even chicken? I really don't know at this point. And I don't want to think about it. Whatever it was, it was horrible and inedible. The veg pizza was average. At least I could eat it. But nothing great. I actually have never been to this place before - just ordered online and thought I'd give it a try. Never ordering from here again.

Sooo delicious. Cheese pizza, cheese burger deluxe, onion rings, clam chowder and French fries. I needed comfort food after eating salads for weeks. Literally perfect. Everything!!! Sooo satisfied tonight. Thanks Helen's pizza!

I haven't had their pizza but judging from the reviews not sure if I'd want to. However, I HAVE HAD their subs and they are actually pretty good! The BBQ chicken hot sandwich tasted great. Not the BEST sandwich I've had, but definitely would buy again. The overall atmosphere is eh, pretty spacious but truly nothing special. Just your standard pizzeria. I'd recommend walking, or taking public transportation to this location as parking around this area is nearly nonexistent!

A great place to grab some slices at the end of the night. Better then the competition around the grove street area. Just great quality pizza.

Helen's is our go to pizza place. It's like the pizza you grew up on and so comforting! Plus the delivery is always faster than the time quoted which is my favorite part. Great for popping in and grabbing stuff to go as well! My favorite order - Large Cheese Pizza & Caesar Salad which is really good!

Completely disappointed I'd say. I feel like the guy who took my order didn't really explain much about the pizza I ordered. Honestly when I opened up the box I thought I had ordered "bread". I literally measured the crust and that was like 3 miles thick, see picture below. Will I order pizza from this place again? No thanks. It was a rainy day and I asked them for a bag to put the pizza in and they didn't even have one. $27 for that pizza? I should've read the reviews first.

This is a place I frequented back in High School. This place has always been good. It has some of the best pizza I've had from that area in Downtown Jersey City. This time I ordered sweet potato fries and a Buffalo chicken pizza and it's was average at best. It surely wasn't their best work. I'll try again another time to see if there is an improvement.

Best pizza I have ever had hands down. We got pizza and a sub from Helens delivered to our hotel in Hoboken. Delivery was fast and food arrived right when they said it would arrive. On time and hot. We were so impressed with the taste of the food. I wish it was closer to our home outside of Boston.

Terrible experience!! I order here days in a row and both days they missed something from my order. When I called to let them know they forgot my margarita pizza, CHRIS was extremely rude and unapologetic. I asked Chris when would they would be returning with my pizza and he said "whenever someone passes by your way- we're too busy." WOOW!!! Talk about awful customer service! You forgot my pizza and garlic knots and act as if I owe you something! Needless to say the pizza NEVER CAME! I will never order from this place again!

I heard so many wonderful things about this pizzeria, but I was monumentally disappointed with the pepperoni pizza I ordered. The pizza was doughy and undercooked. When I opened the box (see photo below), it was a mess. If I were able to leave a negative star review, I would. The competition in Jersey City is tough, especially during the COVID19 pandemic. Food order was not taken correctly and nothing was done to alleviate the issue other than waiting 20 minutes longer, and no compensation for their error.

The service was disappointing. There was no greeting, kind exchange, and thank you. First order of spaghetti and meatballs..The spaghetti was very soft. The meatballs tasted like they were bought and not made in house. My husband who is Italian said the pasta was bad. He only had a few bites. He thought the meatballs were okay. I thought the sauce was okay but very salty. I ordered limoncello cake and the cashier looked at me with annoyance. The cake was very good. I suggest going to Rig A Tony's. They know how to treat customers.

The hot and cold subs are huge and very good. Affordable pricing compared to other places, and still tasty.

Had Ordered a small pizza with topping, Fries and Onion rings. Pizza was Ok. Fries was good. Onion rings were Ok.

Wonderful soft slightly chewy crust with a sweet tomato sauce and just the right amount of pizza. Great example of classic New York style pizza. The tiramisu was standard fare, creamy and delightful. Delivery was quick.

Sis and I had stuffed our faces with pizza and pastries so I wasn't hungry. But how could I not try a place called Helen's Pizza! Well, a bite showed me that this humble, NY slice was way better than the over salted artisanal pie sis and I had for lunch. The ratio of cheese to sauce was fine, the sauce tasted fresh, with good seasoning, albeit not as tangy as I would have liked and the crust was a bit softer. I could only eat a bite, but took the slice home, since it was delicious. Well a few minutes in the skillet proved crisped up the crust. Almost a perfect slice. Helen's Pizza is big, with ample seating and a varied menu. It's not upscale, but a regular pizza place servicing up really good pizza. Seating is large tables and booths to one side and smaller tables. And if you like your crust crispy, ask them to heat it really hot or do as I did, take it home and reheat.

I've ordered takeout and delivery service from here several times and the food is great! The pizza slices here are enormous and delicious! The eggplant parm sandwich is another favorite of mine - its tasty and filling. However, dont waste your time on the fries...they were pretty bland. If you have the option of pickup or delivery, do pickup. I've always waited past the delivery estimate for one reason or another.

Hadn't been here in years and the food I picked up today was delicious I definitely will be coming back more often.

Ordered a chicken topping for the pizza, got croutons instead. Overall - mediocre.

Very upset with my order ...paid $12.95 for garlic shrimp and pasta...only had 5 shrimps in the whole dish...other than that the food is good just feel ripped off...don't order shrimp anything from them

Pizza is probably the only thing I don't order from Helens. Cheese steaks are awesome. Chicken and eggplant parms are great. The sausage and pepperoni rolls are great also. I recommend.

The hot hero's are pretty good and worth the money. The pizza pie is a different story. The bottom was burnt and it was dry and chewy. The single slices are usually ok.

I ordered for delivery a large pie, a small pie and a tiramisu. I never received the large pie which is so annoying since we were really hungry, I called the restaurant but didn't take responsibility for it. Then I was about to eat the tiramisu and noticed that the slice was soooo small and paid $3.95 for it and the flavor is not that good so definitely not worth it. Overall my experience with this place was terrible.

I've ordered their eggplant parm hero sandwiches many times with no disappointments- but this last time was very disappointing. The bread was burnt on top/bottom, making it very difficult to bite into. The Margarita pizza was also a disappointment - areas missing sauce and cheese. They were both ordered on a Saturday at 7pm.
