"Helix Brewing Co. is the latest brewery to open in La Mesa to our delight. Its beer garden is designed perfectly for enjoying great weather while imbibing with friends and/or family. There's a gorgeous patio and game area that's poised perfectly to foster good old fashioned community and spirits. Their beer is great, made right there on spot and served up fresh. Food is always available via food trucks out front. Our personal favorite is pick up our own pizza to share as a group while sipping on their tasty suds." - Caava Design

Google
Great little brewery that has freshly made pizza a couple of times every week. Very kind staff. There's a 2 for $30 pizza special and every pizza you buy gets you a 50% discount ticket towards a beer. One of the best deals in town for groups. Will definitely be back to try more of their selection!

We had such an amazing experience here! We love sour beers and this place by far has the best selections of sour beers. Pretty extensive too about 15 or so. We came on a Sunday night with our baby and the taco truck was a good choice for small bites. There is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. There was a local artisan there selling some stuff. The parking at the front seemed limited but I did see a different parking lot across from the building.

Robert Wolinski

Google
Patio area was great. Very chill vibe and beer selection was wonderful. Decent amount of parking on premise or on the street.

I'm a regular visitor, live in the neighborhood. There's something about this brewing, it has its own charm. They have sour and regular beers. Two separate warehouses. I prefer regular and there are lots to choose from. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday they have food track till 8 pm and live music on weekends. The atmosphere and people are very nice here. It feels like a family:). I recommend visiting this place on the weekend evening.

Located in industrial area of La Mesa, this brick walled rustic microbrewery got a nice set up. There are two buildings sandwiching their outdoor patio area. Dog friendly space where you see many families with their pooches. They have many different type of beers but their sours standout the most. Good service, great ambiance. One way street but never had any issue with the parking. 4.3/5 ⭐️

Google
Nice vibe, great selection of their beer. Optical Haze 7.0% ABV was pretty decent. Came out for live music by #realitysession and nice find in the industrial area. No food but food truck had a huge selection.

Adrian Montfort

Google
Tasty beer, good music and a beautiful outdoor patio. I’ll definitely swing by next time to try the sour half of this brewery. Extra points for being dog-friendly!

Google
Great selection of beer with indoor and outdoor seating. Food truck was out front the day we went serving polish food plus a tamale guy came by and blessed our session even more. Good music playing and kid and dog friendly. A must go!

Roberto S.

Yelp
This location is well hidden, but I really recommend it. Families and all ages can enjoy the live entertainment and if you are over 21 can enjoy a variety of beers.

Tu T.

Yelp
This brewery is super cute and worth visiting! They have a large selection of beers and sours and plenty of seating inside and out! There aren't many beer garden, outdoor breweries in the area so this is definitely a good spot! They open everyday if you need an afternoon pick me up!

Kathy B.

Yelp
Friendly. Cool vibe, music is not overbearing and low key~ so nice. Lots of fresh air. They have a food truck most every night. Nice merch. Beer is wonderful. If you like stouts the Trail Shoes is a grat coffee stout.

David A.

Yelp
I like Helix Brewing. Their beer selection is heavy on the IPAs, which I no longer imbibe, but I do like their porter, their pumpkin ale, and their lagers. They also have a second tasting area for their sours, which look good. Nice place to stop and enjoy a beer, listen to music, or try a food truck. They have a rotating lineup of musical entertainment and of food trucks. Often see family here to just enjoy the day. Have a beer.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised to find such a hidden gem or a brewery a little away from the main area of la mesa. We came on a Sun night and it wasn't too busy. Lots of indoor and outdoor space. They have one side that focuses on just sours and another that does the more standard beer options. There was only one person working that night so it was a little slower to get drinks but she was helpful and let us try some drinks before getting a glass. I got the deep thinker which is their hazy IPA and it was good. My partner got the king Rufus porter which was a stout.

Morgan W.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem. It's located in an industrial part of La Mesa and if you're not from the area you'd easily drive by unassumingly. I'm not a beer person but the Mexican lager that I ordered was delicious. I was here for a work happy hour and we entered the weekly trivia night. They have sours as well for those who don't want hoppy drinks. The sours are...and I can't say this enough, SOUR. Tart and lick puckering but flavorful. I did some tasters but ultimately decided to go with a beer. As far as food, it's food trucks only. We had a burger truck the night we attended and it was great. They had a memorable ranch, it tasted homemade. I highly recommend coming here, great ambiance. Open aired patio. Just a nice place to sit on a San Diego evening to enjoy a beer.

Felina V.

Yelp
Nothin' quite like an ice-cold beer on a beautiful afternoon in La Mesa! Is there anything better to do when you've got an hour to spare? Cheers!

Lindsey M.

Yelp
Helix is one of my favorite breweries! They have a great space and great selection of beers and sours. Many times there is a food truck out front as they do not serve food. They are pet friendly and have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Service was good, not the best but good enough.

Roger D.

Yelp
Excellent place to grab a variety of sour beers! It would be nice to have air conditioning though as there were two tap rooms & the sour beer one was hotAF. More reason to enjoy your brewskis I guess!

Yelp
I've been going to Helix on and off for many years, and typically, it's a very relaxing place to grab a great beer. Last night, it was not the beer but the food situation. They have a different food truck there daily, which is cool because it's always different. Last night, I met a colleague for beer and some food. I arrived early to grab a seat inside, and we enjoyed the New Zealand IPA. My entire goal was to eat, and we were both hungry and assumed they'd be open past 7:30 p.m. I hesitated to get us up to go outside because I was losing my spot. In hindsight, I could have put a coaster on my beer (future tip). Here's my gripe: When I walked out, the food truck said we had just filled our last order. If I'm inside, how does anyone know when you're closing? I brought this up to Kylie, who was incredible. She indicated, " Well, they've been here since 2:00 p.m. " This didn't answer how patrons knew when they were closing. Frankly (and I don't own a food truck), if a customer walked up while I was closing, I'd figure out some way to serve them, but let's leave that alone. Still hungry, I closed my tab, and we headed to the Hills and ended up having a great meal. In the end, I spent more time at my second location than I did at Helix. Just a suggestion: Right next to the calendar, put up a quick sign with food hours; then, I don't have to sweat it, and I can enjoy a few more beers.

Macarena O.

Yelp
We just discovered this cute brewery close to our house and we loved it! They have a nice outdoor area, games and it's pet friendly! The beer was good and reasonably priced. Also, when we went they had a food truck in case you want to grab a bite. We will be back!

Royal B.

Yelp
Excellent beers and the nicest staff who have become friends, one of my favorite places to relax and have a beer.

Lee T.

Yelp
They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They also have heat lamps and string lights outside to create a beautiful ambience. The sour beers were refreshing and crisp. The service was quick and easy to order with good recommendations.

Kyle V.

Yelp
This is our favorite brewery in the San Diego area! It's the only place that we have found where the beer is amazing, great atmosphere and not too crowded. The North Park breweries are too crowded and we have gone away from those. This place does a great job all around. Nice brick buildings in an old industrial park. They have a whole section for sours too!! Staff is super nice and they have a food truck outside a lot too for food.

Susan W.

Yelp
Great Entertainment!!! (APPIAN WAY) Beer is good but wish they had wine too or other cocktails. THEY NEED MORE HEATERS OUTSIDE during the winter. It was so cold tonight.

Pamela A.

Yelp
American Larger was .y pick. Awesome light citrus flavor. Great Ambiance. Dog Friendly. Indoor miniumal seating. Nice outdoor seating. High and low seating. Big area. Brick 1 story.

Lisa M.

Yelp
Super friendly Chill Energy Great guest food trucks Great beer Definitely would recommend

Christine F.

Yelp
I'm not a big sour beer person, but if you are then they got a huge menu waiting for you. They had a decent selection of non-sours too, which I happily found an IPA on and drank with delight. Dog-friendly. Family-friendly. Love when they have the live music and food truck. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Martha W.

Yelp
Just wanted to update the review in that Jamie King now plays the first Sunday of the month from 3-5. The beers are still great and they usually have a food truck. I love the space and the staff are always nice and efficient.

Chris J.

Yelp
I've driven by Helix Brewing too many times to count. Tonight I pulled over because the food truck in front said "Simply Fresh", and I was hungry. I am ASTONISHED at how awesome this place is. The atmosphere is nothing like I've experienced in San Diego. Austin, Portland or maybe Boulder, but I was really amazed at the layout, warm staff, brew selection, etc. I'm not a huge fan of the bitter and dry IPAs, and they have scads of those to choose from, so I ordered their Mexican Lager. It's delicious paired with my "Simply Fresh" food truck Chef salad(also delicious btw). It's a shame this place is so hidden away in a quasi industrial park in La Mesa(Mt Helix). I highly recommend this place to anyone that thinks they've seen the best of all things San Diego has to offer! I'LL BE BACK

Stacey M.

Yelp
Absolutely adore this place! The outdoor area is so charming and we stopped by on a night where there was live music! We had a few sours from sour works and some of the mainstays from helix. The blonde was phenomenal and the blood orange sour was the perfect mix of tart and flavor! Will definitely be back and bring friends! The bartenders were all really friendly and offered to run drinks from the sourworks side since there was an event going on! 10/10 great service

Jeanne K.

Yelp
Nice smaller brewery. Good beer selection. Ambiance in typical for a smaller brewery. They had a food truck with Tacos that was a plus.

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Ambiance: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Beer: 2 stars Food trucks: varies but usually 4 stars Live music is usually a great time, the atmosphere is amazing. Staff is friendly and helpful. I'll be honest I think all the beers are pretty lacking and sours all taste the same to me. IPA's are way too hoppy for my taste. Food truck variety is awesome. 3/4 of what's mentioned is the reason we return. We tend to enjoy our beers down the road at the other brewery before going to enjoy their entertainment.

Allison B.

Yelp
LOVE this brewery! My husband & I wanted to have a spot to gather all of our out-of-town friends and family the night before our wedding and we knew we wanted Helix! Communicating with them was so easy - they made sure we had info about the food truck, parking, and everything else we would want. The most incredible part? They didn't even charge us extra to swarm the brewery with our ~90 guests. Besides having the best, most chill vibe with delicious beers... they're just cool, down-to-earth people. We love you, Helix!

Mike H.

Yelp
Excellent spot with great beers and a friendly staff. Food truck in the early evening is a nice bonus. Ample indoor and outdoor seating.

Frank P.

Yelp
Great vibes, good beer selection and best of all live music just watch a band called "Down 2 Eleven" they did all my favorite 90's songs it took me back down memory lane.

Jerry R C.

Yelp
Cool brewery a little bit off the beat and path. They don't have a kitchen on-site but do have food trucks on some days. I recommend calling ahead if there's rainy weather to confirm the food trucks will still be there.

Jason L.

Yelp
Helix Brewing is located in a sort of industrial area, surrounded by warehouses and old brick buildings. The brewery itself is split into two brick buildings joined together by a cool outdoor seating area with ample tables and chairs, plants and string lights. Cool set up. The building to the west offers up the hoppy options; mostly IPAs, a few hoppy lagers and I spied a single coffee porter that snuck its way onto the menu. Across the way in the west building, dubbed "Sourworx," is where they hide all their sour offerings; plenty of fruit-based options in a variety of levels of tartness. Friendly service and the place was super clean. If you love hops or sours, this place will resonate with you. If youre into Belgians or darker beers they didnt have much in that area but maybe they do throughout the year? Cheers!

Ali P.

Yelp
Came here on a late weekday afternoon to try out some beers. Love that there's the option to have both ciders and beers! There's lots of room both inside and outside options. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and help you pick out the beer for you! Only thing that would make it better would be food but this is definitely a great local gem to meet friends and have some drinks!

Gary B.

Yelp
Great beer and fun venue. Food trucks available around meal times. Service was great, and brewery is dog friendly.

Paritosh B.

Yelp
Vibe is pretty good and staff are friendly but I'd say the beers are below average.........

Kim T.

Yelp
Husband and I were checking out the area and decided to give this location a try as we're big beer lovers. Our service was a little slow at first since there was also an event going on, but it picked up once we got our first order. The setting is very rustic, very cute - I can see many different events being held at this location. The beers were great tasting and the prices were reasonable compared to other breweries. There was a pizza food truck when we were there and of course that went well with our drinks. I will definitely be coming back and bringing a few more friends!

Nolan S.

Yelp
My girlfriend brought me here. I love the ambience here, lots of exposed brick and wood. It has an old industrial building feel. One side is all their sours and one side their traditional beers. My girlfriend picked out the beers for us and I liked all of them! It was a saturday and the place got crazy packed. They also have a calendar showing they have live music on weekends and food trucks pretty much everyday! Stop by this spot and support some local business!

Anna H.

Yelp
Pleasant and sweet little place with a food truck every night. Lots of options to choose from (even tiny glasses of beer for people who don't drink much like me) and very friendly staff and clean bathrooms. Oktoberfest was getting a little crazy down the way so we wanted to sit somewhere and have a drink. I remembered this place and we drove down. It was so nice to sit out under the lights and listen to live music. Every time I drive by I want to stop, and last night we finally did and are already planning to go again next weekend.

Lahela P.

Yelp
My husband and I had been here in the past, just the 2 of us and we've always loved it. But this past weekend, I was able to throw a surprise birthday party for my husband and WOW! The staff did not disappoint. My girlfriend was able to reserve a small space in the SourWorx room where we were able to serve a few finger foods and have a place for gifts, along with lots of seating for guests. There was even a live band playing and a food truck outside for anyone that wanted to buy any extra food. Kids welcome and dog friendly. That made things a lot easier for some of our guests. All night, all I heard from guests were how much they loved the venue and planned on coming back. The variety of beers and sours were awesome. The prices great! Service was on point. Everything was clean, even the bathrooms. I will be referring Hélix Brewing to all our friends and family!

Danielle R.

Yelp
I came here one afternoon with my son as they were hosting a fundraiser for his school and had a decent time. I was pretty surprised by the space they have and I loved how it was set up. There is a main bar area with tables and seats and bar seating on one side. That is where the majority of the people were. There is also a fantastic outdoor space with a bunch more seating available. The other side had another bar, more seating, and a lounge area with games. The restrooms are also over on this other side. I spent most of my time outside and it felt so nice to have the sun shining on me, but it was even better when I was able to go inside and get a break from the heat. They do not serve food but there was a food truck there when I was there, and more were supposed to come and hang out as the night went on. After the fundraiser was over there was also supposed to be a band come on to continue the fun. I do not drink in front of my kids, and I do not drink beer, so I didn't sample any of their drinks, but I think that is okay because the environment itself was great. It was such a nice laid-back area that is so easy to hang out at with family or friends. I know that I will suggest coming here again in the future and hopefully without kids as I know my husband would love to try some of the items on the menu.

Yelp
Great space! The indoor outdoor concept makes it the perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing beer or cider with taking in the live music. Perfect for a first date meet up spot or a chill evening with your family, friends, and/or doggos. They partner with local food trucks which means you can have a different dining experience each time you go. The staff is friendly and helpful. The beer and cider are divided into two different sections which can make ordering a bit more complicated (especially if you are also getting food), but you shouldn't be in rush here anyhow... come and relax, enjoy the vibe, and then come back in a couple of days to try out a new food truck experience. Pro tip, if you are planning on ordering food, do that first. Great food is never fast and the food is exceptional.

Johana T.

Yelp
Great choices on tap, and a nice set up in the patio. The beer tenders have all been friendly and efficient on the few times I have gone in. They do close a bit early during the week though, so make sure you go in with enough time to get a couple of drinks before their last call.

Kelsey W.

Yelp
My husband came by on a date night and had a great time! Very big property with lots of space indoors and out. There's one building with craft beer and another with craft ciders and a courtyard in between. A band was playing the Friday night we were there- they were fun! Helix has shuffleboard, too, something my husband and I love to play when we're out having a beer. I believe they have rotating food trucks- there was one while we were there. We didn't have the kids with us this time, but we will bring them on our next trip- we saw plenty of families with littles

Johnny L.

Yelp
I love this place, the beer is really good honestly. The location is a little hidden and parking is sometimes difficult but that's no deal breaker. The food trucks I feel could be better but this isn't about that it's about the brewer, the beer, and the service. The service can be a hit or miss, I have been here and sometimes they're really nice and suggest things and greet you cheerfully and others its just like ok c'mon order you drink and bounce . Either way I like it and I keep coming back. The only funny thing about this place is how I get stared or glared at. Y'all never seen a brown person before lol.

Emily S.

Yelp
Great beer, great staff, great ambiance, great food! Absolutely nothing could be better about this establishment! The owner, Cameron, is so friendly and welcoming of all guests - if only more places were like Helix! Not to mention it's dog friendly!

Lauren W.

Yelp
Pros: Friendly and knowledgeable staff, great atmosphere, unique brewing concepts. Huge selection to choose from (like HUGE) and prices are extremely reasonable, if not the best I've seen so far. Small cons (easily fixed): No "flavor guide" to let you know which beers are which, if you're ordering a flight. It would be nice to have some kind of quick written list in order from left to right. I know this because we purchased a flight, and the bartender told us it was in order of left to right, from the top of their menu and over, but he actually ended up making a mistake, and when we went to sample what we though was a "pale ale," per their system, it was clearly a dark red. This mistake could have been avoided if there was a list accompanied with the flight (as the bartender would have surely noticed the mismatch), but thankfully we noticed the error. If we had not, we might have left thinking we liked one type of beer, when in actuality, it was something else entirely. Another small, but understandable con, would be parking. We went on a weekday evening and had to drive around the block 3 or 4 times to find an open parking spot. They were very busy (which is a great thing), so perhaps purchasing a parking lot for patrons would be a positive next step. Overall: Highly recommend. Will give them another shot for 5 stars, but the flight-list and parking are sort of hard to change overnight.

James W.

Yelp
@helixbrewingco used to be family friendly. Now apparently they discriminate anyone with a kid. We have been here multiple time before without issue but now the owner/brewer doesn't want any kids and I'm assuming families. My daughter had to have a diaper change and they have NO changing station in the men or women's. So we change her where we can inside and the owner comes up to ask us to take it outside or go to the car to change her. WTF is that. No changing station then no peace. If you are going to allow families then you need to provide the proper facilities. Assembly bill 1127 #assemblybill1127 #billl1127

Yelp
Hit up Helix with some friends after bringing our toddlers to Oma's Pumpkin Patch. Let me tell you, chasing a 1 year old around a public place in the middle of a pandemic is some of the thirstiest work you'll ever do. Enter Helix. They have awesome beers, really nice staff and lots of outdoor seating which as of yesterday is the only way to wet your beak safely for the foreseeable future. It's an incredibly cute place that if I lived nearby could easily see myself becoming a regular. For now, it's bookmarked for post pumpkin patching in East County.

Cyndi G.

Yelp
We did my Moms retirement party here and they were great! The staff was so helpful and it was easy to set up a reservation. The beer is great and they have a great sour selection as well. There's also different food truck that they have come out just in case you need a bite to eat! We will definitely be back and highly recommend checking them out.

Jeff O.

Yelp
Awesome beers. Awesome vibe with lots of chill outdoor seating. Friendly people. And did I mention awesome beers? They Galaxy Rye is a staple IPA, actually pretty light and tropical and drinkable. I had a IIPA (8% and smoooooth) that's in my photos but I can't remember the name. Really all their beers I've enjoyed. The Rye Porter, some other IPAs. Hard to to wrong here.

Chad Y.

Yelp
Cool little place and friendly staff! Great beer as well. The ambiance is perfect for keeping it mellow with plenty of space to hang out if you aren't into being shoulder to shoulder next to people.

Shawn V.

Yelp
Such a great venue. Love the brick buildings and garden seating area. They have a deal right now $20 for American IPA anniversary beer and a T-Shirt. I had the Porter. Super smooth and creamy. Why wife had some sours, and since that is not my preference, I don't know what she had. LOL
