I lived on Ward's Island for a few months and in that time there was nothing wrong with the bridge that came to my attention. Good engineering I guess.

Hell Gate refers to the tidal strait that flows under the RFK bridge. Specifically it's the part of the East River between Randalls Island and Ditmars. This is a choke point for water that is flowing between the Long Island Sound and the Upper Bay of New York Harbor, via the East River.
