Hello, Yam!

The most amazing little hidden gem. Both the desserts we got were exceptional. The beniharuka with custard was melt in your mouth and so comforting in the snowy weather. The purple silky paste parfait was so fun with layers of ice cream, sweet potato, and crunchy corn flakes. Ended up getting a Yakimo (roasted sweet potato) to take home at the end.

Have mixed feelings about this. The purple yam dispensed as spaghetti noodles was fun and it tasted delicious and not overly sweet. It was nicely balanced with a sweet vanilla soft serve and crunchy cornflakes as well as a few chopped up pieces of yellow yam. The actual concept and product is very good. The downside is the size and also that there are a lot of empty pockets in the already small cup. I felt like after filling up the bottom with crunchy cornflakes and the yam pieces, they could have packed in the vanilla soft serve and given more of it. Lastly, there was just one employee who was nice, but liked to hide in the back a lot. I sat inside the store eating my parfait and during that time, had to reassure several customers that there was a person there working and would get to them soon.

SO YUMMY. I love japanese sweet potatos and eat them at home but these ones are so much better and prepared really well. I tried the purple parfait, crème brûlée baked sweet potato, and the honey butter sweet potato. All three were soo delicious, but I especially loved eating the honey butter sweet potato with the parfait so I could have more potato with the ice cream c: The parfait has some sweet potato but I needed more because it was so good so eating them together was perfect. The crème brulee was good too, but I think the highlight is really just how high quality these potatos are, so that kind of masks it just a bit!! Still so yummy though.

I’m disappointed. It seems that baked sweet potatoes are having a moment. And honestly I love them. I got the basic butter option which was also the one recommended The taste was fine but my issue was how it was served. In the pic they show a whole potato. And I got slices. This seems misleading especially for the price paid and how much a sweet potato costs. Sadly it’s on my no list. My bf went to the ice cream shop next door and I wish I had done the same thing. Just seemed like a waste of money

$16 dollars for a single scoop of vanilla ice cream with some yam on top. $17.62 after tax. This price is actually despicable and there is ZERO justification for it because yams are, famously, a very inexpensive food. Tasted fine but please save your money.

Prices have increased to roughly $17 for a parfait. But the yams are certainly tasty! It seems that the purple yam flavor is more popular than the yellow one. There was also a limited edition matcha parfait when I went, but I was informed that it would be sweeter than the purple yam parfait (which was a little puzzling to me because isn’t matcha suppose to be slightly bitter?)

THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD??? Reminds me of Japan. Small storefront, super nice staff. STUPIDLY GOOD FOOD? Want to gatekeep this so bad. The savory and sweet combination with the yams is something else. The cereal bits at the bottom of the parfait are so good with the yam montblanc, yam bits, and ice cream. Creme brulee yam is also delicious, but prefer the parfait. Come here but don't come when I'm coming!

I's been wanting to try the desserts here for at least a year! I stopped by after a really heavy dinner but managed to finish a Honey Butter Beni Haruka because it was good. I wish there was more honey and butter because I didn't taste as much of that flavor on certain parts of the yam. For the size, it was on the pricier end. The service was friendly and fast, especially since I was the only customer there on a weekday night. It was a peaceful dessert on a cold day.

Hello Yam, a haiku. I buy yam parfait. The purple yam is yummy. I said, hello yam. I can only give 4 stars due to the price factor. Everything is great, just $16 for some yam, a scoop of ice cream and some corn flakes is ouch.

SO GOOD. got the crème brûlée and the purple parfait and they are the best "not sweet at all" desserts. the yams are super fresh and you can even eat the skin. these are desserts I can definitely finish by myself because the sweetness doesn't kill you at all. the place is also so cute and service is fast! there's a bar counter with 3 chairs, outside seating and a bench indoors too.

The East Village must have the highest density in the world of hyper niche esoteric restaurants. Want a shop for vegan macarons, katsu sandwiches on pain de mie, or gnocchi and literally nothing else? Come to East 9th Street, and now top off your meal with a yaki imo parfait at Hello Yam! I will say that there is something so magical about a caramelized Japanese yam and the natural sugar with nothing added that I'm not sure I prefer it in "paste parfait" (as so eloquently advertised) form. But this is certainly a dessert worth trying at least once, especially if you're in the area.

Just happened to walk by this place and stopped in. The shop is small and run by one person. We ordered just the silky paste parfait (yellow). The perfectly sweet and the texture with all the ingredients made it interesting. Will definitely return to try the whole yam

I absolutely love Japanese sweet potato so I was happy to find this new place that seems to have recently open. The menu is small which is good, the silky parfait purple was perfect I could just eat it all day! Service was a bit slow but hopefully they move into New York speeds soon. And they had a decent amount of seating but otherwise you can enjoy the food in Tompkins Square park. Would recommend to all!

Wow little crème brûlée action. Kinda wish the yam was hotter and it's pretty pricy. But fun to try.

This was yummy on a hot summer day. The yam has a mellow sweetness to it and the mixture of crunch with the ice cream and yam was nice. It's a small space, so not much indoor seating, but as others have mentioned, there's a park close by. The staff was warm and my order was taken correctly. As there aren't a lot of other shops offering this style of yam dessert yet in nyc, I would order it again.

One of the most unique desserts I've ever had! The purple yam paste had such an interesting smooth texture which made me want to keep eating. The parfait itself wasn't too sweet which I enjoyed! Definitely a must have if you enjoy sweet potatoes!

This has been on my to try list for a while, so I figured I'd go today since I was in the area. I got the Purple Silky Paste Parfait and the Custard Brulee Beni Haruka. --Food-- Purple Yam parfait: Really good, the yam is almost creamy and goes really good with the ice cream. Sweet, but not too sweet. When you combine that with the potato skin and corn flakes, it is really good and one of those very surprising desserts. Creme brulee yam: Super sweet, almost go into hyperglycemic shock sweet. It was pretty tasty, but just wayy too sweet for me. The purple yam parfait is mvp. Service: The cashier is very friendly and good service. Ambiance: it is a pretty small place, I can definitely see it will get super packed in the summer. Overall: If you go, stick with the Parfait. Those are the best ones. I will be back for the parfait again sometime, really good.

The purple yam parfait was really good for a little treat after a meal. It was not overly sweet, and I loved all the textures with the corn flakes, pieces of yam, ice cream, and finally, the purple yam string topping. Service was super nice and quick. Music was playing in the background. Would come again and try something new on the menu!

Friendly person! Imported Japanese sweet potatoes that is made into a parfait (shredded sweet potatoes + chunk + ice cream + ?frosted flakes). Great mixture of textures and interesting taste! Though not cheap, I would definitely recommend to try it. Love that it is here in NYC.

Delicious but very expensive. Loved the parfait. They were out of the custard for the custard brulee potato so we got the honey butter one - good but wouldn't get again.

The service is good and the store is very small with not much to sit down. We got the purple parfait and custard brulee baked. I love the parfait only the size is little little for the price there's ice cream and cornflakes in it and it's very delicious. The baked is good but nothing special. It is lightly sweet, healthy dessert bit overall nothing I'm too impressed over.

I despise sweet potato, but if you like that abomination of nature, you'll probably dig the Yellow Partfait. Even for someone like me, the ice-cream/cornflake/potato skin down south was enjoyable.

Sweet Potatoes for dessert !!! Well, Japanese Beni Haruka to be more exact, These are not your typical supermarket sweet potatoes, they are more carefully grown and nurtured, quality vs. quantity. I really love it with the custard brulee baked on the one I got, but they also have honey butter or ice cream scoop options. It was having dessert and lunch at the same time but sweet. Although the price is high being a specialty shop and the sweet potatoes are imported from Japan. Since they are a newly open shop they are having a promotion of buy a dessert, and get a drink free.

Cute little shop that sells the Japanese sweet potatoes. High quality potatoes imported from Japan. Didn't think I could finish the purple tam yam parfait so opted for the custard brulee. Delicious! Vegan/non-dairy option available for the parfait. It's a bit pricey but makes for a delicious treat that's more interesting than your normal ice cream/cookie. I wished they were open a bit later than 9pm

I love purple sweet potatoes and was so excited when I stumbled upon this shop while perusing Yelp for an after-dinner sweet treat. We had to try one variety of each dessert, but they were definitely on the pricier side! It was $28 without tip and shared between two people. Beni hakura - 4/5. If you are a texture person, I would not get this dessert! I love sweet potatoes, but they can have a stringy and chewy texture that may turn some people off. My friend said the custard brulee wasn't too sweet which is high praise considering she doesn't like sweets. I wish it were served a little warmer (personal preference). Not sure it's worth the price for most, but I LOVE the beni haruka variety and know they can be expensive to import. Purple silky parfait - 5/5. This is the dessert to get if you only have room for one. It's so different from any other desserts and has so many fun textures. The name "silky paste parfait" is spot on. The purple potato truly does have silky paste-like texture (and not in a gross way) and the added crunch of the frosted flakes--YUM! Give this place a try if you are in the area!

The tan flavor is so delicious and almost healthy feeling. The staff was friendly and didn't try to rush us out even though we got there near closing time. There's some seating inside and outside.

I tried both the yellow yam topping as well as the purple topping. Both were equally fantastic, and the customer service is above board. Their set ups are very cute exhibiting their brand and the owner is a doll. I highly recommend this Japanese yam treat.

Very nice and niche Japanese sweet potato dessert shop. NYC really has everything, doesn't it? They do this sort of noodle-shaped squeezed yam out of these holes, like they do for McDonald's fries apparently, and then squeeze it over ice cream, or whatever parfait base you want. It's a cool concept, and it's done well. I am not a sweet potato lover and I liked it, but I know the real Japanese sweet potato fans absolutely ADORE this place.

Just made the trip out to their 9th street and Avenue A location I had the purple yam parfait it was So Good and with the corn flakes at the bottom to add some crunch!!. Perfection!!. The girl at the counter was extremely helpful and friendly!. Looking forward to hopefully catching it at Japan fes this weekend!!.

Not too sweet! Love love this dessert shop. I went last night and the worker was so sweet and took alot of care into making our desserts. I got the silky paste parfait and the custard brulee baked sweet potato. Both were very good. One good for summer, one good for winter, but my fav was the parfait. The shop is small but have a few seats inside and a couple tables outside and we didn't have trouble finding a seat when we went at 7:30pm.

I saw this place on Instagram and was mesmerized by the stringy purple potato desserts! Such a fun looking sweet treat. I'm also a fan of japanese sweet potato so was excited to see a dessert place centered around that ingredient. I went with my boyfriend and we tried the purple yam sundae. It's comprised of a vanilla soft serve , some chewy bits that I assume are baked sweet potato, corn flakes, and the mont blanc style sweet potato. This was a small portion for two people, I could have probably demolished the dessert myself. ALSO- it cost $16!!!!! Like it's honestly outrageous to me, I would value this at like $8 at most. Anyway the dessert was yummy but no way is it worth paying $16 ...

This dessert shop is a great new addition to dessert scene in NYC. They specialize in Japanese Sweet Potato, which is a popular street food in Japan. I tried their parfaits and custard brûlée baked sweet potato. The parfait consists of cornflakes, sweet potato, ice cream and sweet potato paste. It's so good. Even though, I can't tell the difference between the yellow & purple ones. For the baked sweet potato, I really love it with the custard brulee. For the price, it's on a higher side but it's understandable since they import the potato from Japan. They are having a promotion: buy a dessert, get a free drink.

Quaint little shop, well lit and cozy. There's some seating, but not a lot. I really like sweet potatoes so I decided to try this. I've been here twice now. I did not get anything the first time I was there, but did this time. I've only seen one person work there at a time, but whichever lady that's working is always very nice and helpful. There's not a lot of options on the menu, but I think that's the charm of this place. There's warm roasted potatoes for cold and rainy days and then parfaits for hot days. I got the purple sweet potato parfait and honey butter roasted potato. If you're okay with stringy texture then the parfait is great!! It's so soft, airy, stringy and sweet. There's a layer of soft serve, some pieces of roasted potatoes and corn flakes underneath! Any dessert with corn flakes deserves extra points. The honey butter potato was really good. To my understanding of just looking at the signs in shop, they're Japanese sweet potatoes. I'm not sure if they're grown in Hawaii or Japan and then flown into the US. Also in the menu it says to eat the skin bc there's also nutrients in it. The potato itself is very soft and sweet. It almost feels fluffy and like it's been injected with honey already. Butter adds a little saltiness which is perfect. There are to go options, but I think eating there is best. The food is pricey, but to me it's worth it. I couldn't afford to eat it everyday sadly, but once in a while as a treat is nice.

I discover Hello Yam from other Instagrammers. The dessert from Hello Yam was unique, but the portion size didn't justify the high cost, which exceeded that of a regular meal. The space was quiet. The Yam from Japan lacked a distinct flavor. It was a take-out spot that quickly got my order ready.

I really wanted to like this place... I came with my husband and kids after coming back from a trip from Japan and was super excited to try this new spot but was let down by the lack of flavor in the ube. It was definitely not worth the price. Forget about it. World's of a difference.

Wasn't happy about the service here. Food was so so considering no one has this in New York but nothing special. Not worth it.

Was very excited when this place opened near me but extremely disappointed when I tried it. I am a huge ube fan and so I really thought I'd love it but all the parfait is is store bought cornflakes on the bottom, a yam they put through their machine which, yes, has the "wow" factor of making the little spaghetti strands but isn't adding much, and then reddi wip on top. Then they charge you almost $20 for that. Absolutely insane prices for some store bought stuff and raw yam put through a machine.
