Tried this place for the first time and got the Hell ramen. The waiter made really sure I knew what I was getting myself into. I’m pretty into spicy so I was like yeah bring it on. Later, while waiting I realized the menu states you have to try the one step down ramen to qualify to order Hell ramen. I guess I looked like I could hang.
I ordered Pork Gyoza, Garlic Edamame, and Piri-Piri Karaage. They were all really good. Here’s my thoughts on all three.
The Karaage intrigued me when I saw Piri-Piri was the spice used on it. It’s basically the jalapeño of Africa and I grew to love it in my time down there. Also, Karaage is great in general and I had to sample theirs.
The vibe was great. The service was slow at first but they had 20 diners and one waiter and just opened, so I’m totally forgiving. Our waiter was awesome and once he got our orders we were eating in no time.
The first bite of Karaage hit me like a punch. I was so excited to eat it that I forgot it was spicy. There were 4 hunking pieces of juicy chicken there. They didn’t overbread it which is fantastic, I hate when there’s too much batter. In the end I couldn’t even finish it. They gave me such a generous portion. No aioli sauce like some other places have but I found the flavor on its own more than sufficient.
Garlic edamame was awesome. A sneaky little bit of heat and a lot of flavor.
The Gyoza were great, the only non spicy thing I had. They came out as five all stuck together as if they were made fresh. Flavorful and juicy.
And now for the main course. The ramen. The Hell looked pretty much like I would imagine hell. I stared into a cauldron of magma...it just looked spicy. I could swear some of those pepper seeds onto of the broth were winking at me...
I’ve had a few spicy ramens and have been pretty comfortable with Lava’s molten or Goku’s ‘Goku Spicy’. But just looking at it I got the vibe it was gonna be h o t.
It did not disappoint. From the first spoonful it was pure fire. I enjoyed it. It only got hotter as the peppers had more time to soak. It was my first foray into spicy ground beef as a meat option. I think I’ve decided I’m more into the bigger piece of pork.
I found my self slurping the broth at first and kind of dying but really enjoying it. The noodles that come with the Hell are different and thicker than what my girlfriend got with the more tame Tonkotsu they have. It was so hot I was hunting down the noodles. I think I drank 1/2 the broth and ate all the meat and noodles but decided to call it. I was so full and it was so spicy.
The ambiance was very enjoyable. Non-pretentious and cozy. Very small, good use of space. A classic narrow room. Lots of red and a badass logo of Satan stirring a pot of ramen. All the staff looked like they were having fun and I liked the music.
I ordered a pitcher of Sapporo—which was huge by the way—and that really went well with the Hell ramen. $24 seems like a deal.
Honestly my ears popped from how hot the Hell Ramen was. I’ve never had that happen to me but I felt pretty alive.
I’ll be back to finish the whole bowl next time.
