What a cool art museum! HAM, or Helsinki Art Museum is a modern/contemporary art museum located in a big shopping mall. HAM contributes a great cultural gem for the city here, with thought-provoking and interesting works of art. They had a big exhibition on Parisian art from around the time that Picasso was painting there, showing a lot of where he got his influences.
They also had a seemingly permanent exhibition of photographs of a Finnish rock quarry that has interesting sounding geological features. When we went, the top floor of the museum was off-limits due to their ongoing installation of a new exhibit. So I felt like we missed a good deal of the museum's space. The museum is easy to get around, and the artworks are titled and described in English as well as Finnish.
Outside the museum, there's a cool gift shop, with reasonably priced prints, cards, and some art supplies. They even have a clearance section with cool artsy books in Finnish! The museum also contributes large scale works of art to the mall that it's located in- so check out the chandelier made from pots and pans and the other big sculptures!
I was really glad to find this museum. It's got some cool stuff! The best part, was we happened to show up on half-priced day- Score!
