The Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Pastry chef Cara Benson swore off gluten three years ago, making all her own baked goods gluten-free at home. The health benefits for her were immediate, she says. Benson, who owns Tartine and Toast, opened Hen House Café and Bakery in Gretna to offer customers a wide variety of gluten-free bread and baked goods alongside breakfast and lunch dishes, all in a sweet, homespun setting. FYI: She closes January 1 through Mardi Gras day to use the space for king cake production, then cleans/decontaminates and reopens for business." - Beth D’Addono

This restaurant is such a gem!!! If you are local to New Orleans or are visiting and are gluten free this is a must visit!! The atmosphere is so cute and eclectic, the staff is incredibly friendly, kind and so helpful. It’s only a short drive from the convention center area and is locally owned. The food was delicious and the bakery items are unbelievable. Can’t recommend them enough!!

My favorite breakfast spot because of the many delicious GF pastries! They all taste like regular pastries. Cinnamon rolls as big as a salad plate. About 12' of delicious baked goods, as well as sourdough bread and gf pancakes.

Lovely little local place, good portions (plenty of protein if go the burrito), good prices (about $13 out the door), food tastes homemade and fresh, welcoming people, atmosphere gives off comfy throwback vibes. 10/10 would come again for a quick breakfast/brunch.

They have amazing gluten free breakfast and lunch options - banana bread, muffins, biscuits, etc that are so yummy! Iced coffee is great too. I usually pick up to go because I find the air quality from the kitchen to be an issue on weekends, maybe some better ventilation is needed inside.

I wanted to try the chicken salad because I had seen it online. So I went there and had to park next to the canal, as all other parking was taken. I opened the door and was instantly greeted by the heat and the smell of cooking. Clearly, the ventilation system does not work. I still decided to stay because I was just getting chicken salad to go. There were 4 people in line ahead of me and also every table was occupied in the restaurant and there was one lady working the front by herself. I gave her grace because of this. She waited on everyone ahead of me and then had a conversation at a table she was not clearing or giving food. Before this interaction I looked at the patrons and observed that myself and another table (my kind) had not been served. Long story short, I left because I did not feel valued as a customer, it did not seem like the place for my kind. Now had she greeted me or said something to me in any way shape, form, or fashion I might have stayed. Never going back again and I wish them well.

Very cute southern diner. Their menu accommodates all the major dietary restrictions. We tried the pastry, GF Chicken Salad, and the Grilled Cheese. Everything was really tasty.

So glad this place opened! Truly gluten free (their gluten baked goods are prepared at Tartine for now, so there’s no AP flour flying around the baking kitchen), nothing here disappoints. Inside, it’s spacious and homey. I got the GF sourdough breakfast sandwich with eggs & bacon & cheese, and my friend got the breakfast burrito with chorizo, eggs, potatoes & cheese. We both saved half for later, although we could have finished it right then. I couldn’t tell the sourdough was GF. Texture was perfect. We also got a GF oatmeal cream pie that was ridiculously good. The coffee was great. And if you want to get tea, there is a great selection with individual tea pots and mini hourglass tea timers. Super great to see this new option for my GF peeps and gluten full peeps alike. I don’t even need GF and I really thought everything was terrific. Staff was super nice and explained everything incredibly well, and it wasn’t at all unreasonable for 2 people for brunch. I will totally be back.

Yelp
In NOLA, not to party or sightsee, but rather to care for a family member for a few days. I stumbled across the Hen House searching for an iced latte. The Hen House was a million dollar find. Quaint and charming, bright and beautiful. I met MJ there and she made my coffee every day I showed. The menu was a delight and oh my God, their bakery made my mouth water. Seemed to be a favorite of locals. Kind of a hidden gem. I wanted so bad to try their shrimp and grits, but I was under a time constraint. I did buy the banana bread and it melted in my mouth. MJ was the best and beyond a friendly soul. Next time around in NOLA, I will make a point to give everything on the menu. I promise you will love this place!!

Yelp
At my new fave place. Like 2 blocks from my house. The cooks come in at 4 every morning and bake . Fabulous scones, etc. They also offer gluten free breads , but the Salmon spinach salad is my go-to lunch. They are open daily 8-2

Yelp
Great food with a smile from customer service. Highly recommend!!! Coffee nice & fresh. The breakfast was real eggs not powdered. Bacon fried to perfection. Nice & clean with lots of pastries to choose from too. Go check them out, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
First of all the service is phenomenal! The cashier is so nice and knowledgeable about the menu! I really appreciated her for making sure I was aware of all of the gluten free options. I went in this morning and ordered the breakfast tacos and grits.. JESUS CHRIST ON A CRACKER IT WAS DELICIOUS! I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast for the first time in months. The temperature was spot on. I didn't know grits could stay so hot! Everything was seasoned to perfection and totally worth every cent! I look forward to goin back and dining in. Hen House, you are a blessing! As a gluten free girlie I APROVE this cafe with bells and whistles! Get your hineys into Hen House people! You won't regret it!

Yelp
I heard about the Hen House through my neighborhood group. It had opened up earlier this year and is affiliated with one of my favorite brunch places, Toast. Both good reasons to visit! I came here on a day off from work since their hours are from 8am to 2pm on most days. There are definitely coffee shop vibes when you walk in. The space is a decent size with booths on one side and tables in the middle and on the other side. You order in the front where there is display of all of their gluten free bakery goods and a menu. The menu isn't exclusively GF but there is the option to make your order GF. I chose to try the Breakfast Burrito with a Cauliflower soup as the side and a coffee. Once you place the order you take a number and find yourself a seat where they will bring the food to you. My Breakfast Burrito was very good! All of my favorite things in it: eggs, potatoes, and chorizo. Chorizo always has a great flavor! The avocado pieces were a bit big as was the cheese slice which I ended up picking some out. I really should have just asked to have no cheese since I'm not a big cheese lover. Drinks: The coffee wasn't my favorite. I usually like my coffee black, but ended up adding some cream. Service: Very good- everyone was very friendly! Parking: Street Parking.

Amazing food drink and service. First time here with my brother, I got the shrimp n grits with an iced caramel coffee. Nancy was super helpful and funny. Food was fresh and very happy we stopped by, give em a try :-)

Yelp
Cute and delicious with great service! Also highly recommend getting cookies to go. Especially the oatmeal cream pie. I brought one home the other day and I've been asked twice now to stop and get another one! ha

Yelp
Overall, everything about Hen House was great. The person taking our order / serving us was friendly and helpful. All 3 of us enjoyed our dishes, including the person who has very extensive food allergies. The place itself was modest, but cute. They have a pastry special where you can do 6 pastries for $16, which given the quality, was great. Would definitely consider again. Since we went back in June 2024, we learned that they make Tartine king cakes during Mardi Gras which are currently my favorite and it's wonderful to know that we have such a delicious king cake option on the West Bank.

Yelp

Yelp
The Hen House has so much potential but fell short for us. The wait was long and the portions were small and over priced for what you get. They were not prepared for a busy morning rush. The silverware sits on a cup on the table and some of it was dirty.

Yelp
Really good breakfast spot in quiet part of town. The service is super friendly. Try the grits. Very creamy. They serve what looks like a homemade jam. It was the best. I plan to go back again and again.

Yelp
A gluten free bakery & café in Gretna? A literal god-send. Us celiac folk spend so much of our day hungry and foraging, trying to eke together a decent meal from tiny, flavorless, overpriced "bread". We scour a restaurant's menu beforehand for GF items forever wary that we'll get dosed by a bit of the old wheat devil dust. And then, there's Hen House. As an individual who has celiac and also loves to eat, I fully appreciate the love & care that goes into making their broad array of baked goods. As a chef, I further appreciate the skill that goes into making these things... GF baking is a whole different ballgame. And Hen House knocks it out of the park, every time that I've been. My partner tells me their normal bread is also extremely good. I've never left a Yelp review before. As a food service professional, it feels odd to do so. However, this place deserves glowing praise. Ecstatic praise. Hallelujahs and acclamation. 10 stars.

Yelp
I had been patiently waiting for another neighborhood eatery to open in Gretna. Finally got a chance to go in the other day and was amazed/shocked/pleasantly surprised that nearly their entire menu is or can be made gluten free and that all the pastries are gluten free. You wouldn't realize it from the website and I hope they advertise it better because this is such a rare find in New Orleans, here's an idea -- "New Orleans' Premier Gluten Free Cafe. Home Sweet Home for the Gluten-Challenged." As for the food itself, so far I've had the breakfast burrito, the quiche, grits, a pineapple coconut scone, the banana bread, and a hot sausage sandwich. ALL of it has been delicious. I haven't been able to have a po-boy in so long (2+ years now because of gluten) and the hot sausage sandwich really really made my day - thank you . It is WORTH crossing the bridge for, support your locals, and get yourself a dozen GF pastries for the week, you'll be happy you did!

Yelp
Wonderful gluten free options just outside of New Orleans! Great prices and friendly staff!

Yelp
Searching for a gluten free option for one of the members of our group and found Hen House. Wow. If you are gluten sensitive this is the place for you, but if you don't have gluten issues this is still the spot. Friendly, helpful staff and delicious foods. Had shrimp and grits, blt sandwich, gluten free breakfast sandwich, gluten free breakfast burrito, cheese scone, and gluten free coffee cake. Every one was a winner. Played great music and not too loudly, too. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The food at the Hen House is delicious! Breakfast sandwiches are great, lunch salads great, soups, great as well. Most of all, Hen House has the most delicious baked goods on the Westbank. The oatmeal crème pie is so good. Yall visit Hen House on the Westbank

Yelp
Delicious homemade baked goods, breads, soups, and sandwiches. Staff is friendly and helpful. Awesome neighborhood spot.
