"Pastry chef Cara Benson swore off gluten three years ago, making all her own baked goods gluten-free at home. The health benefits for her were immediate, she says. Benson, who owns Tartine and Toast, opened Hen House Café and Bakery in Gretna to offer customers a wide variety of gluten-free bread and baked goods alongside breakfast and lunch dishes, all in a sweet, homespun setting. FYI: She closes January 1 through Mardi Gras day to use the space for king cake production, then cleans/decontaminates and reopens for business." - Beth D'Addono, Eater Staff

My favorite breakfast spot because of the many delicious GF pastries! They all taste like regular pastries. Cinnamon rolls as big as a salad plate. About 12' of delicious baked goods, as well as sourdough bread and gf pancakes.

Lovely little local place, good portions (plenty of protein if go the burrito), good prices (about $13 out the door), food tastes homemade and fresh, welcoming people, atmosphere gives off comfy throwback vibes. 10/10 would come again for a quick breakfast/brunch.

Service was friendly, prompt and excellent. The food came out quick and everything was delicious. The menu has something for everyone's tastebuds and the atmosphere is an excellent place to enjoy a peaceful meal with family and friends. I would highly recommend giving them a try.

So glad this place opened! Truly gluten free (their gluten baked goods are prepared at Tartine for now, so there’s no AP flour flying around the baking kitchen), nothing here disappoints. Inside, it’s spacious and homey. I got the GF sourdough breakfast sandwich with eggs & bacon & cheese, and my friend got the breakfast burrito with chorizo, eggs, potatoes & cheese. We both saved half for later, although we could have finished it right then. I couldn’t tell the sourdough was GF. Texture was perfect. We also got a GF oatmeal cream pie that was ridiculously good. The coffee was great. And if you want to get tea, there is a great selection with individual tea pots and mini hourglass tea timers. Super great to see this new option for my GF peeps and gluten full peeps alike. I don’t even need GF and I really thought everything was terrific. Staff was super nice and explained everything incredibly well, and it wasn’t at all unreasonable for 2 people for brunch. I will totally be back.

The baked goods are fabulous! We also got breakfast. The pancakes were flavorful and piping hot. Eggs were perfect. This is one of the best places around, whether you need gluten free or not.

Hen house is a cute little cafe with really good service, nice atmosphere and good food. I ordered the breakfast burrito which was good. My only request would be to have options on the meat instead of just chorizo (sausage, bacon, or combo). The burrito is a decent portion size and certainly could be shared by two adults. It also comes with a fruit bowl, sour cream, and salsa (very mild). They do have an assortment of hot sauces for those who love hot sauce (me). I also ordered the latte and that was really good too. I’d love to see some sugar free flavor options for the coffee, but otherwise it’s pretty good coffee. The service is great. The waitress taking my order was very polite and pleasant. This is the type of place you order at the counter and pay, then they bring it to you when it’s ready. The food was also ready quickly. The atmosphere is nice, there’s plenty of seating, and a variety of seating options (booths, tables, large banquet type table, and couches). It’s not too loud inside which is conducive to conversations with friends or families. Overall a great visit here. Thanks!

My dad works around the corner and is a regular customer. I found out recently I have celiac and had to give up gluten, so he put together a care package of some of his favorite snacks from the Hen House and overnighted them to me because he's the best. But the Hen House is even better. Seriously the best gluten free baked goods I've found! And they were even two days old by the time they made it to me! SO GOOD! And I live in a big city (Dallas) so it's not like there's a shortage of gluten-free bakeries here. But this one blows every establishment by my house out of the water like Old Faithful! If you happen to be in Gretna and have the opportunity to visit this restaurant YOU MUST!
