How the Crunchwrap Became Bigger Than Taco Bell

"A Lebanese-inflected take on the Crunchwrap that channels the Fertile Crescent and is enormous in scale: it uses markouk flatbread filled with smashed garlic potatoes, toum, sujouk, cheese curds, pita crisps and lamb-shoulder shawarma, finished with a za’atar slaw and a shower of sauces including tahini and pomegranate molasses. Designed to feed two to four people, the item became a social-media hit but proved logistically taxing—back-to-back orders can monopolize a station, and it was briefly pulled from the menu before demand forced its return." - Matthew Sedacca

Open Mic Night the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month! 8pm start time. Had a great time!

It was my friend and I's first time ever being in a bar, we were both 22, and we had a freaking blast. After about 10pm is when the music gets going and you can really dance. We were at the skating rink for her birthday, and we kept dancing to the songs. We found a local to ask if they knew anywhere good in town. They suggested here, and we were NOT disappointed. I wish I lived closer, I'd go way more frequently, even if I wasn't drinking 😊 bartender was super friendly and enviting, being there late there were a couple who had a few too many, but she was quick to put them in their place. She truly made the night special for us by mixing up any crazy drink we could think of. We even got to make up our own drink we called the Sedona-Lisa(Sedona + Alicia). It was an unforgettable night for sure.

Google
Great community bar! Visited during Cool April Nights! Place was packed and So Fun! Walk in to a basic, dark bar atmosphere, but pass area to an open, outdoor bar with outdoor seating and a volleyball set up. Music was playing! People were having a great time! During the car show there were great classics on display, bbq and drinks! I've been told on a regular night it's much less crowded and a great place to grab a drink!

Google
Clean fun easy divebar. Nice outside patio. Tenaje was an amazing bartender. Our glass were never emptied and she was so friendly.

Kaity K.

Google
The bartenders here are great! The male bartender, Casey, is very attentive and quick while making amazing mixed drinks. The cost of drinks here are in the middle range, but definitely cheaper than many other bars (hence why I come here opposed to other bars). On friday nights they have a dj and dancing which is a great time to go out! The staff is amazing and kind. They have also offered me a free water bottle for when they close. Nice indoor and outdoor bars/seating areas with a volleyball court!

Google
The bartender was so incredibly rude. My husband and I set at the bar for 25 minutes without even an acknowledgment of being there. When I raise my hand to ask about getting a drink she, pointing to another person who just walked up and ‘she was here first’! Which was not true. All she had to do was acknowledge us and say I will get to you we are a little busy. But she did not. She was extremely rude. Whoever runs that business should take another look at how it is ran. Customer Service is everything. She obviously has no idea what that means! Will not be back!!

Yelp
The good old Hen House hasn't lost its glory. An excellent bartender named Shanda taken care of America's veterans--good old white boys who served the country and helped build America. It's got a nice pool table and the only outdoor bar in California I've ever seen where you can smoke. A real bar. A proper bar. You can smoke at it. Ignore the bad reviews--do yourself a favor and give this bar a try. There's something special here: respect, history, and the kind of atmosphere you just don't find anymore. Shanda runs the place with heart, and you can feel it.

Yelp
I love the Hen House, it's my regular haunt. Reading through the bad reviews, I can tell which bartenders were mentioned as giving bad service. They're no longer there, and I love every current bartender (what's up TAD!). Drinks are generous, atmosphere is chill, lots of regulars, and prices are fine. It's a fun place to hang out at. They don't have a "proper" kitchen (not that they ever said they did) but they offer air-fried appetizers and free popcorn and they are more than happy to have you get some DoorDash delivered. Bantam Kitchen is across the street if you wanna walk about a minute and grab some incredible food. Overall it's very chill, they have a *legit* Taco Tuesday with karaoke and a pool tournament on Wednesday. Give this place a chance, ignore the bad reviews. The only reason why I'm giving four stars instead of five? If it's slow the owner will tell the bartenders to close early with no social media warning, and that's bullisht. If you advertise hours, stick to those. I've lived in several cities in several states and I've *never* seen a place close early with no warning outside of Redding. Other than that, Hen House is a great place to hang out and have some drinks.

Yelp
We were in town visiting for a few days this summer. We decided to go there. We stood at the bar and waited to get a couple of beers. The bartender spent time talking to other people at the bar which I am assuming were regulars. We got the beers and hung out for a little while. I went to order a second beer and was ignored again. I don't plan on going back again. There are plenty of other places where the bartenders treat you with courtesy even though you don't go there all the time.

Joseph M.

Yelp
I will never come here again, the bartender needs to be fired she ripped my drink from my hand and told me to leave because I was taking about politics she told me it was her bar and we need to listen to her rules. I'll be sure to come by tomorrow and ask for the owners number to push to get her fired.

Christy D.

Yelp
What an A hole... I had been in here during the car show and thought it might be a place to have fun at in the future. I stopped on my way home, just for a beer. The bartender was rude, NO beyond RUDE and not friendly at all. It was Friday night about 8:30, still quite a few women at the end of the bar and a couple of men. Can't see myself returning ...

Izzy H.

Yelp
We love Amanda! She took great care of us and was so nice! Give her a raise!! Great drink and popcorn

Kelsey K.

Yelp
Worst and trashiest bar in town. Drinks are way over priced and the lines are ridiculous.

Yelp
I am from outof town. This place is great! This is a down to earth bar! If u want to come in and be a jerk off. Don't expect the best. The people here have been great. Ordered wings and mushrooms. They were good. Beer was cold. So was my Jack Daniel's Jack fire. I had a great bar tender named Tenaj!!

Yelp
There are two things that aren't horrible about The Dirty Hen: - The DJ's playlist - The fact that is such a disgusting embarrassment that it is brilliant. Being at The Dirty Hen is like watching a car crash. It's horrifying and terrible, yet you are drawn in, fascinated by the new world you have discovered. Mythical-esc creatures can be found here in their natural habitat. Their natural prey being anything with a pulse, particularly females -- ladies be warned. The bartenders pour drinks with the grace you'd expect of a baby trying to extract milk from a breast for the very first time. But bless 'em if they aren't trying. The dance floor is indeed straight fire. It is grimy and gross, but the floors and walls are kept squeaky clean by philanthropic patrons. The disco ball is a site to behold. Be sure to arrive early if you'd like to orient some specific dance moves around it as their can be a bit of a wait. The bathroom seems to double as a bit of an extra curricular activities center for misguided non-youth. Neat! Overall, I don't mean this as a bash but simply a fact, I have honestly never even know a worse bar to exist, but because of this it now my favorite bar and the one I will speak of most fondly and frequently to those dear to me. Looking forward to the next time I can ruffle some feathers at The Dirty Hen.

Yelp
Had my birthday at the Hen House last year and they have a great backdoor area with Sand Volleyball court. Great dive bar to chill with friends that's low key.

Yelp
Definitely one of the most fun places I have ever been a regular of. Pool table, dance floor, Dj, out door patio, and a beach volleyball net that makes summer nights that much more fun to get drunk in. This place has some of the prettiest girls I have ever seen, and with a great girl to guy ratio (which is why I suspect I have never seen a fight break out here). Definitely on the trendy side but still casual atmosphere, with friendly bar tenders, a great top shelf selection, and even free popcorn for your friends who overdue themselves in drinking. Bathroom situation can be a hassle (even for guys) on crowded nights and there is no lock on the door (my guess: they thought of emotional people trying to lock themselves in). This place is as good as a dive bar can get, and one of my favorite places to frequent.

Gracie B.

Yelp
This place is good if you like to get in a bar fight at the end of the night. Thursday night karaoke was pretty fun when it's not so crowded. I'm a girl and apparently I was in the wrong place at the wrong time because I was just talking outside then out of no where I got punched in the side of the head by a huge dude then he punched my fiancé in the face and popped his jaw out of place nearly broke it! Definitely avoid on the weekends because there is a bad crowd here we where not aware of. This happened on his 21st birthday also, so I guess happy birthday almost getting a broken jaw.

Yelp
First let me say, I don't live in town (I'm a guest). So I have only been here a few times. I love the indoor blue light atmosphere, the bar lit up and the old men holding the bar up, while hitting on the very young bar tender who's looking to find herself another Anna Nicole Smith love story. The outside is great and casual in the summer. My only complaint is that they are not dog friendly, sure my dogs are therapy dogs but don't walk around with their certifications and I was told my dogs could only come if I had paperwork to show. What harm is a small pug on the patio while I have a beer waiting for my BFF to get home (remember: out of town guest).. But instead, I had to sit in my car for 30 mins, sipping on a tiny 4 pack bottle of wine (thanks chevron) and the use of their bathroom amenities.. One star and beer lost ...

Yelp
This is the best place in Redding that I've found for karaoke. There's always an energetic, younger crowd when I go there. The karaoke song selection can't compare to the karaoke bars they have in San Francisco where I live, but for Redding, it's a decent selection. The staff can be up and down-- some of the bartenders and staff I've found to be not the friendliest, bordering on rude and ambivalent, but some of them are pretty cool. (The staff was a bit rude to me when my friend was really drunk, telling me she needed to leave, etc. In my opinion she wasn't doing anything wrong, and it put me off a bit. They could have handled it a bit better, but whatever.) They have self-serve popcorn with buttery salt, for free, which is good for a snack when you've tossed back a few drinks. They have appetizers too, but on weekends they don't serve them past 9 pm or so, (which doesn't make sense to me, and is a bit inconvenient!) Also, the drinks are reasonably priced, and not watered down, from what I remember. The karaoke jockeys that I've met are really nice, and there's a little stage to stand on when you sing, and a small dance area. There is a nice outside area, with an outside bar, and tables to sit at, and you can smoke out there too. All in all, I'd recommend this bar for a fun night out. :)

Yelp
"Going slumming" was synonymous with the Hen House 5 years ago. In fact, one time my sister, my lady cousin, and my male cousin ventured to this Redding hot spot because they had "renovated" the joint. Not much looked new, including the clientele. The bartender, my sis, lady cuz, and I were the only females in the coop and we were being badly bothered by the drunken buffoons in the place (which is common for ladies in bars-so I can't hold that against the establishment). However, we ended up deciding to leave because it was just getting sketchier and sketchier by the minute; the men were getting more abrasive, pushy, and aggressive. This didn't seem to bother the bartender, who kept on serving the amoebas. It appeared as if she enjoyed the attention from such refined gentleman. Upon leaving, one of the aforementioned gentleman followed us out. We all got in my cousin's car and he proceeded to dance in front of her headlights. We were in disbelief, so we watched the train wreck for a minute until the guy pulled his "manhood" out and started shaking it around. Needless to say, we had to restrain our dude cousin from bringing the pain and we jetted out of that place never to return. I hear that the Chicken Coop is now charging a cover?!?! Save yourself the $5 and mental scarification. Seriously.

Yelp
The owner is a complete joke! Diana I think her name is.. she is the most unprofessional owner I have ever met. Her bartenders and bouncers serve to and let in minors. I heard a group of people talking to one another laughing about how dumb the employees are and how they didn't realize it wasn't really them on the ID.... This place needs to be shut down!!
google avatar

Bryce H.

Yelp
Literally timed 30 minutes on a stopwatch at the bar before I got the bartender's attention for the first time then when I said something about it got told I was lying and that I could leave if I don't like the service.
google avatar

Yelp
Edit: Their Facebook page advertises "Giant Beer Pong" on Tuesday nights at 10 PM. DON'T BE FOOLED. We played for about an hour and the bouncer had us break it down so others can play volleyball. We closed our tabs out to leave and the curly-haired bartender was extremely rude. She kept ignoring us and chit chatting with other people who walked up to the bar AFTER us. We waited and waited. Finally when we begged her to close us out she gave us our tabs and an individual in our party didn't tip. She collected the ticket and started complaining to us how she hates when young, arrogant, people don't tip and that's why she works Tuesday-Thursday nights to avoid the "craziness." When we had first arrived, she took one our IDs and started parading along the bar with it telling everyone it looked fake and had everyone look at it. Everyone insisted it was real, but she continued to hold on to it and show patrons who came up for literally the next 20 minutes. We did not appreciate her showing our ID to everyone and sharing the information that was on it. How unprofessional. Our group of 13 will not be back if she's bartending, and we will be sure to tell all our friends to avoid the wrath of Crystal. Old review: Should be, "The MEN House," as it's always a sausage fest. Female bartenders are rude. Drinks are fairly priced. The outdoor patio and bar serve for a nice atmosphere though. There's an outdoor volleyball court which is fun if that's your thing. On some nights a cocktail waitress will come around selling shots for $1. The Tokyo Teas are really yummy!

Yelp
This place is a gem. I hope I'm not blowing some secret haven by giving a 5 Star review. I wish there was one of these down where I live. I will always stop here while passing through town for the rest of my life.
google avatar

Emilio H.

Yelp
The Hen House was a great place to hang out for the first time for me. 2 bars and and a volleyball court. You don't find a place like this very often. No charge for us at the front door either. All though it does have some people that just can't control their consumption of the alcohol and act up very immature. I think every bar has that. Good Dj music too. It was an interesting place that night.

Nikki S.

Yelp
The staff need to understand how to handle a complaint. "She would never do that" is not the correct way to address my concern about a server being rude to me and my friend.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
First of all, why do they have a cover for the nastiest bar in Redding? I don't get that. I had never been so mistreated in my life. I was already annoyed with having to pay the cover. As I reached for my money the bouncer saw that I had a water bottle in my purse and told me to toss it. I let him know that I could drink it or put it in my car instead of throwing my water away. This guy LITERALLY grabbed it OUT OF MY HANDS, THREW IT in the garbage and KICKED ME OUT! I was livid because of how rude and embarrassed he made me feel. My friend even told him how horrible he was handling the situation. He told us, "I don't have time for this tonight, here you go, you guys aren't coming in" and gave us our money back. So unprofessional. I won't ever spend a penny at this bar. Not worth it
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
This used to be a fun place to go but unfortunately the owner's wife is sabotaging this bar. My friends and family have spent a lot of money and supported this business and it's sad to see how they treat their customers in return. My family planned a birthday party here, patio reserved in advanced, and we were severly disappointed when we were denied shots and food because it was "for the night crowd". It was absolutely terrible. Other times I've witnessed the owner's wife starting drama and trying to instigate a fight. It's so disappointing and inappropriate to see a business owner act this way. So classless. Unfortunately after the last few experiences I will never return to The Hen House. Hopefully one day they realize they are nothing without their customers.
google avatar

Bridget W.

Yelp
Everyone is drunk and run into you... messed up my shoulder from a guy charging into me. Security did nothing.
google avatar

Jacob H.

Yelp
This place is not welcoming at all. First off there's a cover fee which is crazy(this is Redding ca). Second off there's a dress code I went there last night and they would not let me in because of what I was wearing (tank). I would also have to agree that this place is really dirty and not good service. I do not recommend this place. Go to the castle, he'll go buy beer and stay at home it's way better
google avatar

Trisha M.

Yelp
Bartender immediately showed her let's say...disposition. I am a Redding native, drove 10 hours to visit my family. I was celebrating my sisters very mellow 21st, and just wanted a place to relax and enjoy my family's company. Bartender with curly hair was rude, seemed annoyed we were even present, and frankly didn't deserve our business. Once pulling up their yelp, I think the business practice of this establishment speaks for itself. I run a multi-million dollar company, and only ask of those who work for me to treat others with respect and dignity. For a bar, a hole in the wall bar, you'll get nothing of the sort from a visit here.
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
What a waste of time this place is absolutely horrible. I will give them credit for some things tho. The place is surprisingly clean for how dirty the customers are and drinks are fairly priced. Too many tweakers and wayyyyy to many fights.
google avatar

Paige R.

Yelp
This place is great but since when do they hire trash!? As long as the hen house has Christine as a bartender there they will loose lots of business!! Again I love the hen house but will never return as long as Christine pours any drinks there!! Good luck!
google avatar

Stalker Club R.

Yelp
Any one who has followed the Stalker Club of Redding (S.C.O.R.) know we took a little vacation from stalking our favorite bartenders. We are back and will give you a very unbiased review. The club reviews a bar during the day period basically rating the bartenders, the bar atmosphere, and pricing. On a recent outing the club visited the Hen House on Hartnell. We were not disappointed as we met a very good bartender by the name of Jamie. What a great personality and she makes the bar a fun place to be. Hen House owner shes a keeper in our book. The Hen House has done even more improvements since out last visit. A new DJ booth and new lighting and an expanded dance floor has this a place to be. The Hen House still offers pool table, outside bar, volleyball sand court and free popcorn. Pricing we find the Hen House a little high for the day crowd. We like to see under the $3 range for draft. Happy Hour here is $3 for domestic drafts bottles and well. Not bad but this time of day $2.75 would get the Hen House a better score. The Hen House features 11 beers on tap and 7 TVs for sports. Our scoring system is based on a Six pack of beer so we can really give a more honest review. We all feel the Hen House is a great bar and if you get lucky and have Jamie as a bartender you will have a great day and will walk away with a smile. The Stalker Club of Redding (S.C.O.R.) would like to give the Hen House a 5 out of a Six pack rating. A great rating for a great bar!!!!!!

Orion K.

Yelp
I like this place because I live close to it, but I have one complaint. If you drive by this place at 1:30AM you better slow down and watch the hell out. A few weeks ago I was almost T-boned on Hartnell on the way to the mini mart, then I almost T-boned someone pulling out in front of me on my way back. Just today I had to stop because someone pulled out and was driving down the wrong side of the road. I can't entirely blame the Hen House, however they should step up their game and be more vigilant. Mark my words, if something doesn't change around here, someone is going to get killed, and it will happen soon.

Niggle's Choice C.

Yelp
The benefit of the doubt... Okay, been here about four times now. Rating: 2.5 for the outside bar. Bartender chick who is usually there when I went is not friendly. It seems like clicqueiness. I think that Redding has a serious problem with servers in bars. Seems like a pretty lame crowd that can't mingle, can't say hi or be pleasant. The redeeming factor is the outdoor bar. But people seems to be kind of on edge and not able to chat. What's with that, drugs? Or just oddballs?
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
I came to this bar on a Tuesday night. It was far from busy; about 10 patrons, including the people I came with. The service was great, the place clean, and the drinks fairly priced. I love a place with a jukebox and this spot has one! Although we didn't play, there is a sand volleyball court in the back. My friends and I sat outside on the deck the few hours we were there and it was comfortable and fairly private due to the lack of patrons. Next time my husband and I visit his home town we will likely return to this place to have some drinks and maybe a game or two of volleyball.

Amanda N.

Yelp
I love this bar especially on Thursday nights for Karaoke. Amanda is my favorite bartender here!! Especially on cold nights in winter the outdoor area is super nice because they have outdoor heaters. And in summer play volley ball, they open the outside bar, it's really a blast!

Diana R.

Yelp
WORST experience ever !!! The employees are very rude .So there was a incident with my girl , where she was pushed by one of the workers there and when we asked him why he pushed her he claimed she bumped him so he felt the need to push her . We then complained to the bar tender and because we put a complaint in she was fast to say take these girls out they are trouble , the security pushed us out like we were dogs . Mind you all we did was put a complaint . Not to mention how there was a fight a few min before this and the guy who started the fight was ALLOWED to stay. Everyone in there kept having each others back and lying . I'm from newyork , the clubs over there get packed and a lot of drama breaks threw but securities and staff handle everything professionally . This to me wasn't professional it was A horrible and disgusting experience and I don't even recommend it to anyone unless your young and have nothing better to do . :) not to mention I told the owner what happen ! Instead of helping us out she went and agreed with the staff . It was very unfair that we got kicked out for NO reason . For being a human and complaining to the staff about what was done to my friend .not once did we get disrespectful loud or started a physical altercation to get kicked out all we did was complain .

Yelp
I went on a Sunday night, around 11pm, and it was DEAD. Worst of all, the drinks were weak, weak, weak! That said, I am happy they seemed to be one of the only bars open late on a Sunday. But come on, make a better drink!

Tina H.

Yelp
The Karaoke is the best in the North state, the KJ/DJ is helpful friendly, entertaining and impartial and no other place has a lighted Volley ball court and an Awesome outdoor bar the Hen House is a happening place with something for everyone, young, mature,or anywhere inbetween!

Richard G.

Yelp
I highly recommend the Hen House, it's probably the best bar in Redding. It's especially nice in the summer, they have a beautiful outdoor bar, volleyball courts, it's kind of like a resort outside. The owner has put some money in this place. Having lived in Chico for many years - bar owners in that town never put a dime in their bars - it's nice to go to a place that's fixed up nice.. Quite a bit of thought was put into creating a nice atmosphere - I'm not saying it's a fancy place, it isn't - but the owner has really worked to create a neat looking bar, I'm impressed by the thought and care the ownership has put into the place.. I have found the staff very friendly, they are friendly to everybody - all age groups. I'm older, but they always treat me great. I like the juke box, and the sound system, it's probably the best in town. When I have a few pops I get happy and I start playing Santana and the Grateful Dead - as I was saying I am older - but nobody complains, not the bartenders or the customers. I always get good service from bartenders, they smile, treat you like your somebody, they appreciate your business. As a customer I appreciate this, in so many bars they just "throw" the drinks at you and collect your hard earned money and ignore you. At the Hen House they are not like that, they appreciate your business, they want you to come back. So I keep coming back, the Hen House is a good spot, if you haven't been there, try it, you will like it.

Andrew F.

Yelp
I went to the Hen House with a group of friends on a Friday, and that will be the last time I go there. The Hen house is the worst bar in Redding. Horrible beer selection, only good beer they had on tap was Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but what bar in Northern California doesn't have that? But thats not the problem with the bar, as I have no problems drinking Sierra Nevada all night. But I do have a problem with the staff! I had a run in with I believe the owners daughter, she was drunk and working the door with the bouncers. Her stupid drunk friend ran into my buddy who was holding a beer it splashed me right in the face and got my shirt wet, and then went and sat near the bouncers. I let it go because I didn't want to ruin every ones night by starting a fight. But I thought about it for a second and I was going to go talk to the guy about it, and the owners daughter got all up in my face telling me that I am just going to have to take it or leave the bar because that was her best friend. They really no how to treat their patrons at this place. She was one of the horsiest females I have met, and that's putting it as polite as I possibly can. Because I didn't want to make the evening awkward for others, I chose not to start a fight with the bouncers and I held my tongue from unleashing a string of foul language that would have made Andrew Dice Clay blush. Also watch out for bethel church goer's running around that place. All in all you have alot better options in the Redding area if you need to tie one on.

Not N.

Yelp
I've been going to the Hen House for awhile now. Although seems like things have gone south. Candy the bartender knows how to make the bazooka shot the proper way yet when I got mine she used tequila instead of lemon bacardi. I know she knows how to make it because she use to make it for me quite often. And Cody up priced the drinks when I ordered them from him. I know the reasons why they did it but they shouldn't be bartenders.

Jim O.

Yelp
Okay, what can you say about the best dive bar in town. We were in town for the Kool April night event this past weekend. Five of us guys were looking for a place to go after the drag races earlier that night. We went to another establishment, and it was okay, but not a lot of fun. We asked what is hip and were sent to THE HEN HOUSE. ( What a kick in the ass place) A 3 dollar cover was fine. We go in, met a guy name Darryl, had had a great time. Darryl was great to talk with, hooked us up on the drinks with the owner Dianna, and it was on. The bartenders working it had it going on. We were comp some drinks by the owner and just enjoyed the place. Ladies were pretty much off the hook, especially the blond 3rd seat from the end near me. The outside back and volleyball court were just melting with a good time. The Next day I was told that the car show -n-shine was a hit. Coming from San Jose, you think this town would be dead, but we were missed directed by "The others", so don't let anyone fool you. We will be back when possible. HEN HOUSE, Thanks for the fun !!!!!!!!

Went to the Hen House for the first time this weekend. Great energy and volleyball court was amazing. The bartenders were really nice and best of all...no cover charge. This is my new "go to" bar.
