Best Dishes the Eater Portland Team Ate This Week - Eater Portland

"A friend and I were deciding where to go for dinner when he requested dumplings. I took this as an opportunity to go try Hengry Dumpling House. We went to town ordering, building an entire meal of dumplings despite the restaurant offering other dishes. The wontons in chili oil, siu mai, steamed basil fish dumplings, and chive and pork pan-seared dumplings were all so delicious that it’s hard to choose a standout, but I think my favorite were the pan-seared dumplings, which were super juicy inside and had a light crisp on the outside. The restaurant also serves soup dumplings and deep-fried dumplings — two styles we didn’t order on this occasion — so I’ll definitely be back sooner rather than later." - Eater Staff

The Best Restaurants and Bars on North Williams Avenue in Portland, OR | Eater Portland

"This neighborhood dumpling shop plays with Chinese American standbys like honey walnut shrimp or kung pao chicken dumplings in a tangy-sweet sauce. The restaurant’s team hand-folds dumplings filled with pork and scallions or flaky sole with ginger and cabbage, serving them alongside things like salt and pepper tofu or popcorn chicken. Soup dumplings are also on offer here, just in case the line at XLB is a little long. The restaurant accepts takeout orders, too." - Nathan Williams

Mostly enjoyed the food. There was an interesting fish dumpling that didn't really taste like fish? It wasn't necessarily good or bad though? I probably wouldn't get it again. The other dishes were mostly better. I probably wouldn't get the braised pork again either. It's not bad, but not amazing either. Overall it was a good experience. Dumplings are just dumplings after all so don't expect any life changing craves.

Google
Stopped in for lunch because I was craving dumplings. Everything was really good. I started with chili wontons which were excellent and had so much extra sauce leftover for dipping the soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings.

Google
Great dumplings, especially the basil fish dumplings! Eggplant and string beans very good! Clean restaurant and friendly staff!

Jennifer Dubin

Google
Very tasty dumplings, quick service! We ordered the kung Pao chicken dumplings, the pork and cabbage (awesome dipped in soy sauce and chili oil!) dumplings, the pork curry dumplings (husband's favorite), and the steamed custard buns. We'll definitely be back!

Google
Worth a try for sure. Everything seems very fresh and tasty. However, there are plenty of dumpling restaurants in the area worth trying. Try them all and pick your favorite.

Google
The green beans were fantastic, perfect really. And the shumai were delicious. The dumplings were just okay for the price. The service was really friendly. Overall, nice place to stop into if you’re in the neighborhood. I’d definitely come back.

Krysteen L.

Google
Food and service was very good. And the dining area look clean. The walnut shrimp worth every penny. Don’t skip the green beans. Dumplings 🥟 were lovely especially the spicy ones…not too spicy, just enough. All The seats are very hard, just solid wood. No cushions and I found them very uncomfortable. My back is really hurting after sitting like that for so long. No booths. It would be nice if there were some cushioned seating.

Google
DELICIOUS DUMPLINGS Their handmade dumplings are something special. XLB is mid here, but pan fried dumplings are exceptional. The soup dumplings don’t have much soup in them and about half the ones served to me had holes in them allowing the soup to leak out. I will stick to their other dumplings from here on out. Had some good crispy chicken here if you like sweet with your meat. Unique version of Sichuan I think the shumai tastes like a frozen product and is not housemade. I wish they had a lunch special menu. That would make me come here regularly for their housemade dishes.

Yelp
This place is legit! If you're looking for a delicious alternative to Din Tai Fung, look no further. I think their tan tan noodles are way better than DTF and has a nice numbing spice that's in many authentic Szechuan cuisines. Their XLB is maybe not as tasty as DTF but it's very solid and quite delicious. I enjoyed their xiu mai and green beans too! How is this place not packed everyday?

Yelp
The HIGHS: - Chili wontons were very good. The chili oil was flavorful. Wontons tasted fresh and wrapped well. - Spicy popcorn chicken is very flavorful, crunchy, and quite spicy. I like how they added the fried peppers which added a nice crunch and extra heat. Good portion size as well. - Nice bathrooms, condiments, and decor. Service was good, got our food in a reasonable amount of time. The MIDS: - Curry dumplings were a little disappointing, I was expecting dumplings with curry filling but it was just regular dumplings on top of curry. - Popcorn chicken has been a little inconsistent in the few times I've went. The 1st time the chicken chunks were pretty large, but subsequent visits they were smaller and there was too MUCH breading. The LOWS: - Popcorn chicken is TOO salty CONCLUSION: - Solid alternative to ding tai fung. My go-tos are the chili oil wontons and popcorn chicken, but wish the chicken was less salty.

Yelp
Craving dumplings? This is the place! Unexpected. Who knew! Tiny little place that packs a delicious foodie punch. We had the Spicy Crispy Shrimp, followed by the cabbage and pork pan-seared dumplings, the sweet heat dumplings, and the sautéed chili green beans. Everything was cooked to perfection, and we devoured it all. Will definitely be back as there are too many other great items to try, including the honey walnut shrimp. Decent prices, good vibe. Shei shei! Thank you in Mandarin.

Yelp
We were told that we can help clean the table if we want to sit there instead of sitting at the bar. Not that we don't want to help but it was our first time to eat at this place and we were not expecting that response. When we said we don't mind sitting at the bar the two staff looked at each other. Next time explain that to your customer that the culture in this restaurant is to ask customers help clean. Then you expect us to tipped at least 20%. Food is good and flavorful. No doubt. Place was clean and ambiance was relaxed.

Yelp
The Eggplant Tofu was amazing! Came out piping hot and full of flavors. Their entreés were honestly better than the dumplings. We didn't like the Curry Dumplings very much. They're kinda tough and cold...The curry also had an off sour taste. Their Pork XLB were better. Fresh and the wrappers were nice and thin. Decent pork filling as well. Their chilli oil was 10/10. Overall not a bad spot but certainly not the best in town.

Yelp
we stopped by Hengry Dumpling House for lunch. You order at the counter and service is reasonably quick. They had a good selections of drinks, teas, and beers. We started with the bok choy. It was cooked well and very garlicky. The katsu chicken appetizer was delicious, with the perfect crispy texture and nicely seasoned. The pork soup dumplings were so yummy!! Definitely see why they're a dumpling house. i highly recommend stopping by for some good food.

Yelp
We were looking for somewhere new to eat and this came up as a nearby place. We over ordered because we were hungry but we were not upset about it once the food came. Steamed dumplings, cucumber salad, dumplings in chili oil, fried dumplings, sautéed garlic with bok choy, spring rolls and salt and pepper chip. Everything was absolutely amazing. My husband and I put the shrimp at the top though. Staff was friendly and helpful. The inside it nice and clean and open so it doesn't feel too crowded. If you are in the area I highly recommend trying this place.

Yelp
Oh baby! This was my favorite meal of my whole trip! I was able to read the reviews about this place and realized that i had to try this place. Someone mentioned that this was a cheaper version of din tai fung. I am soooooo glad that we did try this. Let me take you thru my meal experience. We started with the cucumber salad which amazing and a large portion. It was refreshing and flavorful. Next we had the braised pork belly and that was so delicious, flavorful and the portion size was enough for sharing any maybe some left overs. We didn't take a pic of the Soup Dumpling but they were just as good if not better than the ones from DTF. So flavorful and delicious but my only complaint is that there wasn't enough soup in them. Next, we had the wonton in chili oil, those were soo good! Their chili oil is flavorful, a little spicy and just so delicious. The star of our show was... drum roll please ...... Katsu chicken curry!!!!!! Man oh man, give me 14 of them, right now! The chicken was a thin cutlet which was breaded to perfection, then cooked to perfection. Super crispy and super flavorful. The curry was just as delicious, creamy, flavorful and a little bit spicy! It was magnificent! So much flavorful and love put into the katsu! When we go back to Portland, we will be back here for sure! The place is super cute and intimate inside! Overall recommend 12/10!

Yelp
They are about three months open now so seems to still be working through some items. Had to ask for the soy sauce, vinegar and pepper paste for our dinner. Found out later they do have some small bowls to mix up to your desire but didn't offer. So my bigger plate was hard to dip in the XLB and pot stickers. We asked later and they said they don't have enough for all yet but hope to soon. The flavors were good of all dishes but they didn't indicate the spicy toppings on the green beans. I was able to pick out some on the edge. Husband liked the spicy popcorn chicken and said the toppings on the green beans were similar. Casual atmosphere and best to bundle up on a cold day as it was a bit cold inside. Nice to have an XLB option on the East side but prices are still comparable to DTF or Dough Zone so I may still opt to drive across the river and know my XLBs won't be broken. But if you want a local place on the East side it did all taste very good.

Yelp
After a long day of work and attending a nearby seminar, I stumbled upon Hengry Dumpling House for a post-event meal. The staff greeted me promptly upon entering, and I was seated with the menu. While I hoped for photos of the food, the straightforward menu listed dumpling quantities, aiding in guesstimating portion sizes. After placing my order on the paper menu, I gazed around the interior while waiting for my food to arrive. The place offers bar seating, tables, and a countertop table with stools. The glass of water, plates, and cutlery was simplistic and pleasant. Special kudos to the host handling the front of the establishment. When other customers came in to pick up an order, she would offer them a seat and water while they finished packing up their to-go order. She definitely brightened the place up with her demeanor and friendly customer service! I received my order of the crab soup dumplings first. The soup itself was delicious, but the amount of soup felt lacking and I desired a more pronounced seafood/crab flavor. The dumpling skin was slightly thicker in comparison to other dumpling restaurants. Next, my order of curry pork dumplings was served. The curry had a decent amount of spice and heat, with pieces of potatoes in the curry sauce. The sliced cucumbers added a refreshing contrast to cut through some of the spices. The pork dumplings itself were decent. The dumplings were well cooked but the pork filling flavor got overshadowed by the curry flavor. Then, the spicy popcorn chicken came out next. This one was my favorite because it was flavorful and addicting. The chicken thigh meat pieces were still moist yet the coating was crisp. The peppers and seasonings provided a tingling sensation and a lip-smacking experience. Finally, my last order of the wonton in chili oil came out. Their chili oil sauce was very forward in garlic and maybe notes of Chinese black vinegar? While this might be a hit or miss to other people's palate, I enjoyed it. Overall, a solid addition to this part of town. I would come back here again with some friends or family if I am ever near the vicinity.

Yelp
IT WAS SO GOOD! Much better than Din Tai Fung and Dough Zone. For some reason, none of us in our party expected it, but it was the best pleasant surprise The salt and pepper tofu is what I have been looking for every time I have ordered it in the past elsewhere. Best I have ever had and we all loved it so much. We took the leftovers home and while it was still good after the air fryer, we felt it was better fresh, but that doesn't change how much we loved it at all That scallion pancake had a super freaking thick crispy layer and a super thin chewy layer in the middle, it was perfect The broccoli was literally bursting with garlic flavor The beef stew was so savory and perfect with the rice After we realized that everything was so good, I asked the waitress what her fave dishes are on the menu and she went straight for the beef stew with rice. She also said she loves spicy foods and loves their spicy chicken wings Whoever you are reading this, you will love it here. No doubt about it

Yelp
We had a great dinner here! Everything was great from the service to the flavor and menu items! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
If I can give this place 0 stars, I would. My sister and I ordered from here today for delivery. We got several items (for $80, which is very expensive for what we got) to feed us, my mom, and a 3 year old toddler. We started eating it, and after consuming several pieces already, we realized that the chicken dumplings we ordered were pretty much completely raw inside. The dough was still raw on the inside, and the chicken was still raw pink. This was after we already consumed a couple pieces, including the 3 year old that had started eating it already. I'm horrified and sickened that this place doesn't have better quality control. And I'm terrified of any illnesses we'll get from this based on any that we already consumed. Check your food and make sure you are verifying the cook on your stuff before eating it...! This restaurant and the owners need to make sure they better train their staff. I will never order from here again based on this experience, and I don't recommend it at all.

Yelp
Wildly tasty! Brought a friend from overseas to eat here, he said that every single dish we ordered could have had its own flavor theme. He also said each dish kept getting better and better! I couldn't have agreed more!!!!
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
We stumbled by this place for lunch as we were looking for something to eat in the area. The interior was pretty much the same as it was before with the previous restaurant. We ordered a good selection of food to share among the three of us. This included pork soup dumplings, pan-fried dumplings, deep fried dumplings, Tan Tan noodles, popcorn chicken, and braised pork belly. The dumplings were good, and the popcorn chicken were flavorful. The Tan Tan noodles were a good addition to go with the braised pork belly.

Yelp
Ok this place was so good I nearly forgot to take a photo. Wanted to try a dumpling house. I kept walking by this one because it's in my neighborhood. "Hengry" instead of "hungry" caught my eye too. I tried the popcorn chicken, katsu chicken, what I would call chicken pot stickers and an eggplant dish with tofu. Damn. That last dish, the eggplant, was stunningly good. All the food was hot and fresh. The pot stickers I liked the least. The popcorn chicken was nice and spicy. Yum. The katsu chicken was cooked perfectly and was yummy with the sweet chili sauce. Portions were HUGE. I had enough food for three more meals that week. Service was really attentive and kind too. That may have been because I was one of only 3 people there. Middle of the day weekday. Ambiance was nice and quiet which I prefer. Will go again. Definitely

Yelp
Came here for lunch. It's a new dumpling place off Williams and Skidmore. They have a decent beer on tap selection (8 taps). We got sat down with a paper to order, and it took a little bit for service to come back to grab our order, and the place was quiet. Also, there were a few items crossed off, so they had a limited selection of items to order when we were there. The dumpling was just okay to me in comparison to other dumpling options. The beef stew was flavorful, but I think the beef could have been slow cooked a little longer. The string beans were good. Since this place is new, I'd give it a pass and try again
google avatar

Shae B.

Yelp
I didn't have anything to eat because everything on the menu has something spicy. It was my first time and the waitress was nice but I had to ask how it works because I was a first time. Though this place is cute, if you don't like or can't do spicy this may not be for you.
google avatar

Jason T.

Yelp
Came here just before the dinner rush and was greeted with kind service and a great meal. I would highly recommend checking out one of each item on the menu--no, seriously. The xiao long baos (soup dumplings) were amazing, the chili wontons were chefs kiss. Try what you can, if not definitely come back.
google avatar

L M.

Yelp
A smaller, more chill dumpling experience than the big chains in town. You mark up an order slip in the same way, quantity next to the menu item. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The cucumber salad was particularly delicious. The steamed fish dumplings had a good amount of filling and nice flavor but the skin was a little tough. Overall a good experience, good service. Would come here again.
google avatar

Alexander A.

Yelp
This was their second day opened. Service was a bit slow and half of their menu was sold out, as they were figuring out their processes. Definitely not going to fault them here as they will figure it out. But, the food! The food was legitimately delicious and worth the wait. I'd rather wait and receive quality than something that was worse because it was rushed. I appreciate the care for the food and the high quality ingredients. I'm hopeful that the quality will stay throughout the lifetime of this place. I'm going to be bringing friends and family to this restaurant in a couple of weeks to share this gem. Really excited to have legitimately good noodle soups and dumplings in the neighborhood! I think I like it more than Dough Zone.
google avatar

Alissa G.

Yelp
Yummy and very friendly! We ordered multiple dumpling types and had a buffet. So hood.
google avatar

Morgan S.

Yelp
Amazing food. We tried at least six different kinds of dumplings and they were all delicious. The walnut shrimp and cucumber salad... Worth driving back to Portland for. Yum. The staff was so kind and helpful, the food came quickly and piping hot. I can't think of a single complaint. 10/10 would highly recommend.
google avatar

Nathan J.

Yelp
The Katsu curry! Bomb! We had a few of the dumplings and can't wait to go back to try the rest of the menu. Benches and chairs a little uncomfortable for a long meal but the food, service, and vibe were excellent.

Julisa J.

Yelp
GREAT RAMEN ! The pork ramen was very tasty. The broth is balanced, rich, simple, and straightforward. The bok choy and bamboo shoots pair really well with the meat and noodles. It was ready to pick up in under 15 min and had considerate packaging. I liked how the noodles were separate from the broth on my to-go order so I could have a fresh bowl on my own terms.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
Great place to grab some dumplings w/ friends. Great service, fresh and made to order. Fun place to spend a weeknight. Must get: Kung pao chicken dumplings, string beans, curry dumplings Really good/recommended: scallion pancake, soup dumplings, chive dumplings Still working on, but has potential: honey walnut shrimp. Loved the shrimp, didn't love the sauce.
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Great dumplings! We ordered several varieties. My favorite were the curry dumplings and the chili oil dumplings

Mads L.

Yelp
Don't trust the 5 stars.... We walked in and the tables were not cleared, and there was no one to help us. The trash cart was in the middle of the seating. Cold food, overpriced for not much food. We left disappointed! Edit: They ended up charging us more than what we payed! Payed $90 and a few days later checked our bank account and they charged us $110.
google avatar

justin y.

Yelp
Fantastically tasty and fresh food free of too much oil and saltiness. The menu is full of classic crowd pleasers. Great addition to the neighborhood! Also a good option for catering parties.
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
Not crowded on a Wednesday around 11:30. The food was delicious! We had pork soup dumplings, the fabulous garlic green beans, a crunchy scallion pancake, and unctuous pork belly. All of it was so good!
google avatar

Damara B.

Yelp
Food is great. Yummy dumplings, fresh vegetables, great flavors. The fish and basil dumpling is delicious . There's also a good variety of food besides dumplings. Not as hip atmosphere as XLB but food is, dare I say, better. People were nice.
google avatar

Yelp
we accidentally stumbled upon this new spot on a icy, freezing night! first, service was good. the girl that greeted us & took our order was very nice! you order like Din Tai Fung, tally up what you want to order then they'll come get it from you we ordered the Wonton in Chili Oil & they were very good (5/5)! the sauce was drool-worthy. the second dish was the Steam Chive Pork Dumplings (4.8/5) were also good, but nothing too special/different than other dumplings i've had. we dipped it into the sauce of the Wonton in Chili Oil sauce which was a great combo! also, tasty with soy sauce & fried chili oil that's provided on the tables. the third dish was the Spicy Popcorn Chicken were flavorful! but i didn't realize the Dan Dan flavor would be in it. i can't stand the feeling of my lips/tongue being numb from it. lastly, i gave the restaurant a 4/5 because of the last dish. we ordered the Curry Pork Dumplings which we were excited for & unfortunately it disappointed. curry usually has soo much flavor, so that's why i was shocked when i didn't taste any flavor with the curry. they had the right curry color but no flavor & the potatoes had no flavor as well. the dumplings themselves were better once we dipped them in fried chili oil soy sauce small restaurant but good service! i would come back & try some more dishes
google avatar

Nina M.

Yelp
I ordered the garlic spareribs and they were neither garlic nor spareribs... the entire meal... every single piece of meat was at least 80% fat... and it was fried on top of that. I felt sick eating it. I figured at least I'll eat what meat there was and leave the rest... BUT EVERY SINGLE PIECE WAS FAT. I spit out every piece. Gave me trust issues because I genuinely thought maybe it was just the first few pieces.. but nope, they served me a bowl of fried fat. No garlic flavor either, just a bunch of onions. Service was great, everyone was really friendly. Maybe it's only worth coming here for dumplings but nothing else.

Yelp
Noticed this new dumpling place in North Williams after an appointment. I love soup dumplings so made a note to come back. BTW, kind of surprised by all the 5 star reviews when it's been open for less than a month. Still, I came for lunch on a Friday and the place is modern and clean. You order by checking off items on a list, similar to how it works at other dumpling houses. The service was just one guy at the cashier, but he was friendly and helpful. Overall, it was a real mom-and-pop vibe. For the food, I tried the pork soup dumplings and a bowl of tan tan noodles. The flavors were good for the dumplings but the presentation was a bit amateurish. The skin is a bit thick and they all didn't look uniform (you can see in the attached photo). But like I said, the flavor of the meat and broth was tasty. The tan tan noodles looked kind of home made, and presentation wise wasn't very professional. There were sauce drippings on the sides of the bowl (they didn't bother to wipe it before sending it out). The noodles were gummy and the sauce was more peanut butter and not much spice. Overall I feel this is decent if you're in the area and want something straightforward. But it doesn't compare to Din Tai Fung or even Dough Zone.
google avatar

Krysteen L.

Yelp
Food and service were 5 star. I had the honey walnut shrimp, a favorite of this place. Dumplings are tasty. We also had the ramen and green beans. Staff is very accommodating. The only drawback is the seating. Very hard wood benches. My back was hurting by the time we left. No comfortable seating. But you can always order take out and eat at home . I can't wait for another trip to Portland!
google avatar

Jason T.

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Delicious dumplings! Keep on making those delicious hand-made dumplings and I'll be back -- again and again and again!
google avatar

Caroline X.

Yelp
The dumplings are really tasty! As an Asian foodie from LA, I have to say this restaurant exceeded my expectations. It's not DingTaiFung-style xiaolongbao, it's like northern China style dumplings but so tasty! we ordered the crispy popcorn chicken. It's tasty, like the spicy sichuan chicken dish. All veggie dishes are cooked well on point . If you crave some Chinese food in the area, this place could make your stomach full with satisfaction .

Brielle W.

Yelp
The food here is phenomenal, and the service is too. I really enjoy the tan tan noodles and vegetable dumplings!

R Gin S.

Yelp
Super good service, very friendly. We got chili oil wontons, green beans, pan seared dumplings and soup dumplings. the pan seared dumplings could be little crispy but everything else was delicious

Alan L.

Yelp
Second time coming through. Full house, but still got my food in more than acceptable timing. Had some options that were sold out, but I take it as a good sign. Food was just as good as the first time. Staff and service was as good as I expected, which I was happy with.
google avatar

Elise M.

Yelp
This newly opened dumping house has quality food and service. The dumplings were delicious, and the small corner spot has plenty of seating indoors and outside. The spring rolls were perfectly crispy, and there's a good draft beer selection. Check this place out!
google avatar

Gary A.

Yelp
I don't know where the 1-star rater ate, but it wasn't the restaurant we ate in. We normally eat on 82nd street so I was leery about trying this place. That attitude melted away after we ate. Some of the best dumplings, beans and everything we had there. In fact, the place we were used to go all the time on 82nd paled in comparison to this restaurant. Highly recommended. We're going back today. And we went there yesterday for the 1st time.
google avatar

Keilene S.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been coming in since they first opened and we noticed they've been improving their recipes each time! We love their honey walnut shrimp the best, but also like the tofu eggplant, tan tan noodles, and XLB.
google avatar

Kati T.

Yelp
Delicious delicious delicious!! We loved everything! The garlic string beans were a surprise favorite. The honey walnut shrimp was outstanding! We also tried the sesame rolls, which were so soft and perfectly steamed with black sesame filling. We will be back!

Yelp
I ate here with a friend of mine. We both have issues and have a hard time eating out. We can't eat anything with a lot of oil, fat or grease. We had the soup dumplings, wong tong soup, chicken steam dumplings, and spicy Wong tongs. The spicy wong tongs weren't hot spicy but flavorful spicy. Everything was super good. Nothing upset our stomach. We had the place to ourselves. I really liked how our server gave us space but checked on us. We were able to talk and not felt rushed. I think we were there for an hour. The prices were just as high as any place making their own dumplings. Oh yeah we also devoured a plate of spicy green beans! Those rocked big time. We will be back.
google avatar

Aarti P.

Yelp
So a couple things every entrée you order is super super sweet, but they label it as spicy on the menu when it's not they have zero hot sauce and your left with dried dumplings to eat without any sauce at all. There was an item that she brought that said that she was gonna bring hot sauce with, but then they don't have hot sauce. I told her I don't wanna eat dry spring rolls and I would prefer to not eat it now and she got so mad that she chucked the spring rolls loudly, banging the dish in the dustbin. It was really embarrassing and just not very professional and I would definitely not recommend going here. There's better places to go to than this because this is not good
google avatar

Jake H.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday afternoon and sat outside in the sun. The menu is just big enough to have a ton of diversity but small enough for everything to be executed well. We had the green beans, cucumbers, katsu chicken, spicy popcorn chicken, tan tan noodles, and pork XLB, and all were spectacular - nice heat, crispy chicken, nothing too salty. Portion sizes are exceptionally generous, and we left with enough for dinner for a few days. Thrilled to have this spot in the neighborhood.

Michael M.

Yelp
so happy to have them in the neighborhood - very good service and good - thank you. Ordered online and was ready on time, nice service.
google avatar

Beth F.

Yelp
We got carry out of green beans and pot stickers and noodles Yummmmy! All were delicious
