I've waited over a week to write this review, to give it some perspective because I honestly don’t like to write bad one, but I still feel the same as I did on the night of eating there, disappointed and underwhelmed. We are avid viewers of GBM and really liked Mark’s ethos and work ethic and we had eaten at Fera, Simon Rogan’s restaurant in London so were very excited to come here.
We had the full 10 tasting menu, one pescatarian & one meat. At this level there is usually at least one dish that blows you away but unfortunately not in this case. I won’t mention every dish but the fish skin nibble was the best. The pescatarian version of the hogget was sea bass, it was very fishy, tasted like fermented fish you’d find on a smorgasbord and didn’t go with the rest of the dish. The “Study in Scarlet" was the GBM course I was most looking forward too, presentation was fabulous but it came on a hot rock plate that made it difficult to get at & I felt it had overcooked the base because I could barely get my knife through it. The server didn’t mention the inside of the book and only halfway through did I remember from GBM and opened it so see all the hard work that had gone into it, but in my opinion it was over seasoned as were 3 other courses.
Unfortunately there was inedible dish, the fig leaf dessert course, it looked lovely but was frozen solid, I couldn’t get my spoon through it and tasted of nothing when it did thaw, there was also a birdseed like crumb that was unpleasant. The next dessert was also extremely cold and the tuile was claggy & stuck to your teeth so I couldn’t eat it.
The table next to us felt similarly and had mentioned both the study in scarlet and desert to the servers. The staff were very accommodating and did offer us both a free cheese course or drink. Neither of us wanted anything free we just wanted to let them know that the food was disappointing. When our bill came the restaurant had taken off the aperitifs. Thank you Claire for this kind gesture. The venue & staff are lovely and as you can see from the photos the presentation of the food is devine. I was so looking forward to eating here, I love food, most of my reviews are for restaurants, I like anything from greasy spoon to michelin star but for me this was so underwhelming. This may be because it’s a big restaurant and they are trying to do too many covers or too many options with 3 menus available and as I said, it’s all subjective, but I can’t help comparing this restaurant to The Old Stamp House in Ambleside where I have also eaten and for the same price point their food was exquisite.
