"Built in 1835, Henry House is a designated National Historic Site of Canada and has been one of the most beloved pubs in Halifax since the late 1960s. Crowded with locals and tourists, Henry House serves up great fish and chips, in addition to traditional Nova Scotia seafood chowder and fishcakes, alongside British pub favourites like curry and shepherd’s pie." - Gabby Peyton, Kaitlyn McInnis

Google
A cozy little place with good food and drinks. Service was fast and friendly, which is nice since I came as part of a large group. The fries were a shade underdone, but that's made up for with how delicious the steak and mushroom pie was. Pastry used to make it was cooked to perfection, very nice and flaky. Prices were pretty good as well, which always helps.

The waitress was son nice and the food came out fast and perfect. The site looks like stopped in time and vintage. Loved the place

The atmosphere, food and service are great. I had the bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer. It was very good. I had the steak and mushroom pie as a main course. It was very delicious.

I recently visited Henry Restaurant with my students, and it was an exceptional experience for all of us. The food was absolutely delicious, with a great variety that catered to everyone's tastes. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, which made our group feel right at home. My students couldn't stop talking about how much they enjoyed the meal and the overall experience. I highly recommend Henry Restaurant for anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience. We'll definitely be back 😍

Such a lovely place. Loved the food. Wonderful service. Peaceful atmosphere. The patio has a great summer vibe. We visited in late August so after the sun set (and I had no sweater) I got cold and we moved into the dining room which was just lovely. So homey but historical. The food was excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive without being clingy. I would definitely visit often if I lived nearby.

Google
Our new local! Great British pub in a historic stone building in the heart of Halifax. Two floors, the two of us ate lunch downstairs in front of the fireplace with wood beams and stone walls. Great! Ordered two pints of British cask ale (local, one of the few places in town to serve this type), fish cakes and beet salad. Everything very tasty, beans home made and the chow also. Only issue is I don't think the cakes needed to be deep fried, not sure the calorie taste tradeoff needed. Service very attentive. You will not be disappointed. Try it.

Google
Late night stop and the kitchen was still open after 1030 on a Saturday. Our server was excellent, gave good recommendations which the food lived up to. Great "Ultimate Burger" and Fish and Chips.

Google
I had the crab cakes with a sticky toffee pudding and an aged cask ale. The crab cakes were spectacular but the garden salad that accompanied could not keep up. The sticky toffee pudding was not too sweet and you could taste the dates in the mixture. The aged cask ale is the winner of the night. If you enjoy beer do not miss out on these.

Yelp
3.5 Cozy atmosphere, great poutine, decent beer/wine/liquor options. Service in the downstairs area was a bit slow - we always had to flag someone when we needed something.

Yelp
Brunch date!!!! This place was recommended by many for its fabulous fooods!!! Service was great, server/host was super friendly and recommended a lot of great choices. The building was super old, it added to the charm of the house/pub. Definitely will visit again in the future

Yelp
I swear I'm not just writing this cuz I'm scared my friend who picked up the bill MIGHT be a bad tipper (but that's why I did NOT forget weeks after my visit to post.) This place is the best! We sat downstairs at the bar and the vibe is so cozy I wanna go back and write a book there. They have an interesting selection of cask beers on tap, and my absolute FAVE fish & chips EVER! I'll say it. It's the only picture I have from the place and I drool just looking at it. Also, it's super close to the cruise ship port, if you want one more bev before all-aboard. I'll def be back! Also, our bartender was awesome. I feel bad I forget his name! I might owe you five bucks lol.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant our first night in Halifax, NS. It was only a few minutes' walk from our hotel, and our meal choices were delicious. Our server was cheerful, knowledgeable, and checked back with us repeatedly to ensure our needs were met. We enjoyed the very pleasant and comfortable environment, to be sure.

Danny D.

Yelp
The place was great. It has a 3 tier deck next to a house that was converted into a restaurant. I say I'm the lowest deck facing the street (People watching Paris style) and ordered a poutine. Being from Montreal... I KNOW POUTINE and this was the real deal. The homemade fries from cut potatoes, the cheese curds and the gravy. It was a 10 out of 10. So good I got greedy and ordered 2 of them, which I stuffed my face with and washed it all down with a nice and cold oatmeal stout. The waitress was super nice and the service was great. I recommend it to anyone visiting or living in the downtown Halifax area!!

Darlene B.

Yelp
Ordered pan fried haddock last Saturday evening. Fish was dry and carrots under cooked. When I mentioned about the carrots to the server, her response was 'oh we've had a few complaints about the carrots today' yet they kept serving them under cooked!

Denise N.

Yelp
What a perfect spot for a rainy Sunday afternoon. We ate in the pub surrounded by history. My husband had the bangers and mash with a very enjoyable verdict and I had the delicious French onion soup. But the best part of the meal was the best gingerbread we ever had - made even better accompanied by a glass of Merlot. Highly recommend.

Wendy M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and the food was delicious. Chantel was our server and she was fantastic.

Lona C.

Yelp
Great food, not pretentious, and friendly service. Easy vibe and felt totally comfortable eating on my own.

Yelp
We realized on a Sunday night that we didn't have much time to find a place for dinner as we got lazy and hunkered into a movie in the late afternoon. We found a Steak house open online so in a cab we went. Paid our cab driver and ran acrooss the street only to greet one of the managers walking out and told us they closed early. Now our cabs gone wind is blowing and we walked around for another ten minutes and realized that it was a slow night in the city cause of snow and most places closed early. We ended up walking almost the length of Downtown Halifax back until we saw The Henry Pub was still open!! **This pub is right across the street from our hotel, How Stupid is that eh !! It ended up being the perfect place to get some Awesome comfort food and drinks! Funny how things work out sometimes :o) To start my wife ordered a hot apple cider it was the real deal! When it shows up at your table and you see that thick pasty look in the glass you know it's made from real apples not just some mix. Man it was fantastic, she loved it & had two, She usually only has one drink. I had a few Vanilla Stouts, local craft, excellent!! The menu is real old school British pub food with 1/2 a page of fresh made in house meat pies, my wife ordered the steak and mushroom pie and I got the Shepard Pie. Both were Fantastic!! ( I got to have half of my wife's pie as they were very filling & too much for her but I'm not complaining. ) lol The crust was perfect and that either makes or breaks it. The food & drinks were great but the staff are Awesome here, they make you feel so comfortable and welcome we had to came back again the next night for dessert (cause we had too much food already our first visit) to try their recommendations and the desserts again on night 2 were fresh and fantastic ! This review is starting to look like an essay but I really can't say enough about our experiences here, It's probably one of the best places we got to enjoy on our eastern Canada adventure!

Michael L.

Yelp
Always been a great spot but last night was awful. Substandard food, poor service and a very long wait didn't make for a great night. Their beer was still good but everything else was extremly poor.

Mar Z.

Yelp
Beautiful historical building with great food and service! We ordered the poutine to share and the salt cod fish cakes. The poutine serving was a bit small for sharing but the prices were very good!

Sona K.

Yelp
I found the world's best seafood chowder at Henrys house! seriously fresh seafood! we also had salad and beef/mushroom pie. equally good!

Eric T.

Yelp
This a great place if you are visiting Halifax want to hang out in a pub-style atmosphere without having to walk to far from your accommodation. The Henry House was just half a block across the street from my hostel and a hostel-mate and I went to check out on his last night at the hostel. The experience was worthwhile. This beautiful historic home had been turned into a very well-fashioned restaurant on the main and second floor with tavern-style pub in the basement. Wanting to have a good pub experience we ventured underground for some beer and pub-grub. The pub area was pretty cozy and very coastal-style with a nice fireplace in one area, even though there was no fire going when we were there. There are some British comfort favorites on the menus like Fishcakes, Bangers and Mash, Sheppard's Pie, Cornish Pastie, Fish & Chips and Steak Pies. But I was pretty famished by the time we sat down and decided that a good old burger would fill me up pretty good so I went for the Ultimate Burger with Fries. It did what was expected off it, tasted great, soothing and filling. I had some chipotle mayo (I think that's what it was) to go with the fries, and it was SO GOOD! This is definitely my first choice pub to go to. I recommend taking a good look at it from the outside during the day and dining inside it at night ;-)

Yelp
Been coming here inconstantly but for like 15 years or so- never a complaint with food, service, timing or getting a table without a reservation or a late one. The staff are very accommodating and friendly and professional. The food is always fresh, hot and as ordered- I love how kid friendly they are even in the fancy dining area! We are pretty much regulars now after my mom and son caught wind of this place- I'd love to try the Drawing Room there sometime for drinks!

Ashlee F.

Yelp
I walk by The Henry House more often than I've been inside, but when I had to pick a place to eat after work it was a no brainer! I don't think anyone would say no to The Henry House. We were seated upstairs, which was great, sometimes I'm just not in the mood to eat in a low-lit room. The dining room isn't very big, but it doesn't feel stuffy or over crowded either, even when it is busy, and the service was fantastic! It blew my mind really. I wish I remembered our servers name because he was great! Super professional, speedy and attentive! It was like we were in a formal dining room! I ordered the chicken club wrap with their hand cut fries. The wrap was average, I really like lots of flavor - which it didn't have, but it was still filling. The fries on the other hand were delicious! They have a pretty good menu with lots of different options! Not to mention the character and charm that everyone loves so much! I will most definitely return~

Yelp
We've come here about 5-6 separate times while on vacation in Halifax. Every single time, we leave completely satisfied with the drinks, food, and service. Usually the more often you visit a restaurant, the more likely you are to have a negative experience, but that doesn't seem to be the case with The Henry House. The main pub area is downstairs in the basement. There's two ways of getting in, the main door (which will lead you first into a separate dining space which I believe is a different restaurant) and a side door which will lead you directly to a stairwell to the basement. I only point this out because we missed the side door on our first couple visits. Over the course of several days, we have sampled multiple dishes from their burger menu and the traditional pub fare. Every item they served us was phenomenal (their burgers are especially tasty). If you're ever in Halifax, I would highly recommend making a stop here with some good company for a relaxing night!

Yelp
This cozy, historic stone house turned restaurant was the perfect place for my welcoming meal to Halifax. Considering we were a party of 7, it was understandable we wouldn't get a table on the patio on such a nice night so we were seated in the main dining area. After a full day of travelling, I was famished! Glancing at the menu, I knew what I wanted. The lamb shank! How could I not? Ale braised and served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies sounded amazing. And it was! The lamb was fall off the bone tender and the stout demi glaze complimented the root veggies and mashed potatoes so well. The other dishes at our table did not disappoint either - lobster dip & chips, goat cheese & bacon stuffed chicken, steak & mushroom pie, etc. I don't think you could go wrong with whatever you decide to have here! Henry House is a must try whether you're a Haligonian or just just visiting :)

Yelp
The Henry House has always been one of my favourite higher end pubs in the city. You don't come here for cheap drinks or women with short skirts (although the latter is never frowned upon). The HH is all about good food and drinks in a respectable pub atmosphere where you're not trying to avoid stepping on glass or mystery spills. Over the years, I've become a big fan of their Halifamous Ultimate Burger, so on my visit last week I wanted to get something more traditional from their menu and continued the fish cakes kick that I've been on this fall. Our orders are promptly taken by an Aussie waiter that my co-workers may have liked more than the food, if they hadn't raved so much about the fries, but I digress. When our meals arrived I was greet my two sizable salt cod fish cakes. Golden brown and crisp on the outside, the cakes still gave way to my fork and knife without squishing, which always bothers me when this happens to a fish cake. The salt cod is, naturally, fairly salty but not in an unpleasant way, and the tasty fish is mixed thoroughly throughout the fluffy potato filling. The green tomato chow that is advertised on the menu wasn't available, and I found that the tomatillo salsa that came instead of the chow was too overpowering for the fish. Fortunately, there was a bottle of Heinz to save the day. Maybe it's unrefined, but I'm a sucker for ketchup and fish cakes. Accompanying my fish cakes was an bowl of baked beans and brown bread. While the bread didn't seem particularly brown, it was fine, if unremarkable and served as a delivery vessel for the beans. The beans themselves had a delicious sweet onion flavour from what I would assume were caramelized onions as well as a rich earthiness from the sauce, although the beans were a tad too firm. It was a solid lunch, and with rave reviews around the table for the food and service, and without a doubt I'll be back at the HH for food cider and general good times.

Yelp
Stopped in Halifax on our cruise ship tour. Looking for a place with legitimate local mussels. The Henry house was a great find and totally unexpected. Great service. Fresh and flavorful food. Nostalgic ambiance of a historic house.

Dan B.

Yelp
I really like this place. I believe it was the old Location of the Granite Brewery. I've never eaten upstairs. If you want to relax over a few pints and some traditional English pub fare. Look no further. I'd say anything you order here will please you. I've never been disappointed. Love the feel of their basement. Really feels like you're going back in time. I must visit soon as I haven't been in a while. Good job, Henry House. Keep doing what you do.

Jason L.

Yelp
Came here for a late night dinner. Sat in the basement pub, which was cozy if not a little dank. Nice selection of local craft beers on tap (including some I had not come across yet), as well as a tasty cider on tap. They had a classic selection of British pub foods: we had the steak and mushroom pie and the shepherds pie, both of which were good!

Madita A.

Yelp
Had an early Sunday night dinner there. The pan-fried haddock was ok but bland, so were the plain rice and steamed carrots it was served with. The reason I am just giving one star was the horrible service. I was the only guest in the dining room, and was rushed to order, rushed to eat, the bill showed up before I had finished my drink. I had contemplated having another drink but I guess I was not wanted as a customer. I really felt like they wanted to kick me out as quickly as possible - very unwelcoming!

Yelp
The HH has had many lives and owners. It is a heritage property once occupied by William Henry , Father of Confederation. When I came to town (1977), the HH was a fine dining establishment; downstairs was The Little Stone Jug, a pub. In the 80s, Gingers Tavern operated on Hollis Street and made home brew--they relocated to the HH address under the name The Granite Brewery. The GB then moved gown the street, but continued to retail beer from the HH location, which reverted back to The Henry House. Then ownership changed, but the name (and beer) remained. For my money, they serve the best "English" beer in town, fashioned after those made at the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire. My fav is Best Bitter Special, which we old timers sometimes call Dry Hop. But the food is great as well, pub food, but a class above. It's all good. This was our de facto HQ during International Year of Astronomy 2009. They got yo know us so well, they would start pouring our pints as we came through the door. The service is always top-notch. When it's chilly, they light gas fires. For summer, they have a small, shady deck. It can get noisy when packed, but not deafening. No loud music. Street parking is recommended. It is my go-to place in Hali. I bring visitors to it.

Yelp
Wow terrible experience...didn't receive our orders until just before we left fish cakes normally to die for....but ordered @620 got @ 755 almost 2 hours later...kicker we were one of two tables downstairs at the time At end of night 2 beer and mediocre mussels made it my way in no fast time and I had to settle up to go to another event and the waiter had the NERVE to call me back I to restaurant to pay for the fish cakes that were not served until we settled our bill...how dare he after basically not serving our table the entire night Will NOT be back Atrocious service

Cat B.

Yelp
Look at how cozy it is here (I'll attach an image from today's visit). For a relaxing time with great food and drink and friendly staff - come here. There's a small parking lot in the back, but usually ample parking on the street and it's accessible by bus. Bonus: You can also go downstairs or up for a quick change of atmosphere (the upstairs is The Drawing Room which is a different business so check their site to see if it's open). Prices are fair and we finished all our food today - no leftovers but no room for dessert either (they were tempting and yes, I've had a few of their desserts before - yummy!). If we weren't going to another event in a few hours I would've split a dessert with someone. We ordered: fish cakes with pear & goat cheese salad, kidney pie with fries and cinnamon French toast with bacon. And we were all satisfied. I checked out neighbouring tables to see what they had: various eggs benny, poutine, fish and chips and they all looked delicious. So... I don't come here often enough - it's been a year since I last visited. I will add this to my list of favourite spots and a good spot for groups and family meals, as well. Another bonus: Several shops nearby including The Board Room Game Cafe next door and the Seaport Farmers Market is within walking distance (check if it's open and stop there to browse, sample or buy).

Yelp
In town from America for the week, and we wanted a real British pub. Henry House did not disappoint, from the cozy (but not crowded) atmosphere, to the menu full of very good pub food (I had the steak and kidney pie, fantastic), to their great beers on tap. Great service as well. Highly recommend if you're looking for the British pub experience, without the dinginess/dark associated with some.

Danielle C.

Yelp
Henry house, I love your nachos! They are my go-to nachos. The only thing I would change is the consistency of the salsa. It is made in-house and easily the best salsa I have ever had, but it is too thick. A lil blendy-blendy would make it perfect! I wish I could give an extra star for adding pineapple. The only down side is, they are not always consistent with layering the cheese. Also my favourite dark n stormy.

Jeff S.

Yelp
I really should live in the South End, because some of my favourite places are within a few square blocks. The Henry House is on my list of top pubs in the city. It has a great patio in the Summer, not the best view in the city but a great space to sit and enjoy a pint and bite to eat. Ever better is the basement in the winter. Sitting near the warm fire on a cold night and enjoying a private conversation with the music just loud enough to provide a great atmosphere. The food is good and reasonably priced, British Pub stye eats with a decent burger on the menu. I have had some wonderful moments in this pub and recommend a visit.

Denise O.

Yelp
A colleague of mine suggested I come to this pub while visiting Halifax. It was a bit of a hike from my hotel. Once inside I decided to sit in the pub downstairs. I ordered a McAuslan Lager. While sitting at the bar a table near me got their food. I suddenly smelt something that made me think I stepped in something nasty. Ha ha...so I ordered it! And it was the lobster dip appetizer...and it was phenomenal!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Very saddened to say I had a horrible experience tonight with my family. Tonight is our first night in Halifax and your menu looked amazing. Unfortunately my aunts plate came out and had hair in it. We both work in the industry and realize these things happen. But the way the restaurant team handled the incident is cause for concern. Not even 5 mins later my uncle finds hair in his dish. A worker then comes over and says it's an airborne hair that was basically our fault. You never blame a guest no matter what. Did we go into the kitchen and add hair to our dishes? We were treated with much disrespect and it felt very uncomfortable and unwelcoming. There's no breeze in here and my hair didn't fly 3ft down the table and land in a baked Pastie or underneath pan fried fish. Thank you.

Kirsten D.

Yelp
I really like Henry House for a cozy dinner with family. The upstairs dining room is one of the most beautiful dining spaces in the city. They also have a super cozy traditional pub in the basement, a 'secret' and very swanky intimate bar on the third floor, and a nice patio in the summer. Just for the space alone it's worth it go there. It's been beautifully preserved and is warm with history and ambiance. The food has been consistently great in the 4-5 times I've dined there. Simple and without frills yet expertly done - especially the seafood options. I usually go for the Smoked Salmon Fettuccini and have never been disappointed. Great quiet spot, usually a bit of an older crowd.

隆

Yelp
Great food with very reasonable price. Selection of local beverages is also great chouder Soup was by far the best among what I had in Atlantic Canada. Not artificially thick with variety of materials daily available. For fish and chips, potato can be substituted with soup or salad. As the contact of Novo Scotia stars with cod fishery, if you are a lover of this food, the restaurant is a must to eat at.

Roxy M.

Yelp
I've heard lots of good things about this pub in south end, and I was trying to find a new pub to try so I finally got a chance to try this place out. I was craving fish and chips especially going to a pub in Halifax so I was definitely getting some here! I ordered the one piece which, I noticed the portion being quite small so I should have ordered the two piece. Overall they were good but nothing that stood out that would keep me coming back for more. Next time I'd love to try some of their appetizers and check out the beautiful patio outside!

Juri T.

Yelp
The Irish lad made some blended ales. Never had anything like it and will definitely come back for it.

Ralph M.

Yelp
What's not to like about being in an almost two hundred year old stone building that's home to a very traditional British-style pub serving Granite Brewing's authentic English beer? Three beer engines allow the beer lover to try hand-pulled cellar temperature beers that are, for me, the closest I've had to some very fine bitters and ales on previous trips to Britain. This is a place where you can truly decide for yourself if the flatter, warmer, and more subtle flavours of bitters, special bitters, or golden ales are for you. There is also a decent selection of other local craft beers such as Tatamagouche Brewing. Hungry? Henry House also serves up a wide selection of good pub food. The seafood chowder was excellent, and others in our group enjoyed "shepherd's" pie made with beef, and the great house burger. Less well-liked were the calamari and fish and chips which all suffered from being deep-fried at too low a temperature, resulting in food that was on the soggy oily side. The chicken pot pie was also underwhelming, with serious questions as to whether or not it had come from the frozen section of a grocery store. The shared bread pudding, however, was definitely a hit! The beers, comfortable ambience, and decent prices and service were all unfortunately hampered by the food issues for our group, but all in all, Henry House is not to be missed for its beer when in Halifax!

Joshua Y.

Yelp
There are two parts to the Henry House. The upstairs is sort of like a regular dining area. Their foods are a bit more fancy. And then you have the downstairs which is authentically Pub-style in look and food. The pricing for the food is very fair and you get exactly what you pay for. I have been there on their brunches as well. Not my favorite in the city but they have a few unique items and the pricing is very competitive. The staff are nice except there was a time I went in with a Vegetarian friend of mine. I wouldn't say they made fun of her directly when she asked if they had anything for Vegetarians but they made some offhanded joking remarks that made her and myself never want to come back. So the staff really need to understand that one must be sensitive to the customers and their preferences in a situation like this. And unfortunately that incident is why I'm giving them a three star rating and not a four star that I would like to give it. But if you are not a Vegetarian and love the Pub scene, this is definitely a place to go.

Travis M.

Yelp
This place was really good. Solid drink selection and the meals were very good. I had the steak and mushroom pie. It was great!

Mira T.

Yelp
Great service, great music and great food! Will definitely be going back on our next trip to Halifax!

Nick B.

Yelp
Probably the best pub in Halifax, for an amazing selection of beers, as well as whiskeys. The fact that their food is absolutely incredible is a nice touch. As most of the reviews will tell you, the Henry House has two distinct parts - a more formal upstairs dining room and a more cozy pub downstairs. The same menu is available for both parts - you just can't go upstairs for drinks only because of the license. One of the more impressive features of the Henry House is a variety of samplers for beers - they offer an assortment of micros available in a series of 3.5oz sample glasses, including Garrison and McAuslan's. They also offer the same for scotch, with tasting notes all along. As far as meals go, recently I joined some friends for dinner and everyone was impressed - chicken and leek pie, curry, bangers and mash, and steak and kidney pie were our choices, and no one was remotely disappointed.

Hilary G.

Yelp
The Henry House is beautiful on the outside and the inside is great to explore - 3 different levels of restaurants. The lower pub is a great experience and feels like a slice of Britain. At first I thought the tiny little booth was going to be a hardship but you feel like you are in a secret cubby hole - it's like pre-school for adults. At least it made your conversation pretty private. It's never good to hear the conversation next to you. The pub attracts all types of customers - I went on a Thursday once and it was an older crowd and on one Friday it was packed with people in their 20s and 30s. We had a new server during one experience and he was quite good and attentive. I tried the burger which was a little strange from the spices in it and it was not my cup of tea. The next time I tried the fish and chips which was bang on. The batter was fluffy and the fish was flaky. The beer list will keep you happy and this is a great place to drink the night away.

Lindsay K.

Yelp
When you walk into Henry House you know you're in for some good food. The smell alone is enough to make even the fullest person hungry. I always get excited walking into this place because I know my meal is going to be delicious. And it is. The food here is prepared quite fast, but it always hits the spot. I haven't found a favourite item yet, but that's because I want to try everything. I like that they have created different things from the typical pub food. And I especially enjoy all the specialty beers they have. I actually prefer to eat in the restaurant section, as opposed to the lower pub section. As soon as you walk downstairs the smell turns from tasty food to stale beer. It's too much like a basement down here in that the ceilings are low and it's kind of dark. I feel too cramped and claustrophobic down there. I do like the building itself though. It's an old stone house, which makes the dining experience interesting and authentic. The meals are reasonably priced, so it's not specific to special occasions. I certainly enjoy going here on a regular basis.

Lesley M.

Yelp
This is the closest pub to my house... at least one that I frequently go to. I love the patio here, it's probably my favourite in the city. It's a three tiered patio set up, so you always get a great seat. The food portion is huge here, everything I've ordered has been great. The nachos are defiantly for sharing, so watch out.. Even when sharing the plate, I've never finished it. They always win. They come with pineapple chunks on them, at first I was hesitant.. but you know, I really enjoyed the different mix of taste! Everything is good with melted cheese.. let's be real with each other. It's also nice to go here in the winter, as they have a wood burning fire place going in the lower level, so cozy! It's pretty small down there so when it's busy it can be pretty loud, and you could be sitting kind of close to others, but hey! You're out having a drink and pub food. Get friendly!

Yelp
We arrived and the patio was full so we sat down stairs. The booths down stairs are quite small, I'd advise sitting at a table for more leg room and a comfortable seat. The atmosphere is inviting and they serve the best cream ale! The spinach dip was delicious and creamy, it was a cream cheese based served with both pita bread and chip.( I love options) For a main I had the pan fried haddock with seasonal vegetables which was absolutely the best in city! Would order this many times over. I always have an excellent experience.

Yelp
Out of a party of 6, 2 of our meals contained a long strand of hair. Gross! Unacceptable! The wait staff attributed it to airborne contamination. Was also informed that there was no manager currently on duty.

Yelp
So little henry house. Your atmosphere and culture is tres cool. I must give you that. That is simply why you don't have a 2 rating. Because your service is terribly atrocious. The last couple times I've eaten at the house our waitress/waiter has been anything but friendly. Even a half smile, I'd take that. Not once did they ask if we needed a refill on our bevvies. It took forever for our table to be cleaned and for us to get served in the first place. When all was said and done, we also had to ask for the bill, twice. Epic fail. Aside from that. You have to give them street cred for their 3 level restoration into a restaurant, pub, and private dining area. Built in 1834? Hello ghosts. In combination with that, they have a solid stack of granite brewery ales. In the summer, this place is great to grab a beer or 5 with friends on the side patio. Food wise? It's decent. They have a pretty good veggie panini and a semi-neat burger. I'm not jumping at the bit to go here. But I'll tag along.

Yelp
I think the food here is OK to pretty good and I like the atmosphere in the basement and in the newly renovated third floor (it's gorgeous--check 'er out). What I don't like is the passive aggressive owner who had my party moved from the basement to the second floor and then ultimately kicked us out at 6:45 PM because I didn't have my ID. Unfortunately this experience has stuck with me more than any mediocre food I've had there. Being asked to leave mid-way through our meal because the owner thought she saw me sneaking sips of beer (how old am I supposed to be?) from my dining companion will do that, I guess. When talking with other friends I've heard similar negative experiences when it comes to the owner and some staff. Decent food and the benefit of having Granite Brewery on tap will only get you so far. You also need to treat your patrons well so they'll want to come back.

Yelp
Awesome authentic pub! One thing Halifax is good for, some good pub fare and Henry House is a veteran on the scene! They have been around for a long time and since I can remember serving up delicious fish and chips and more! They also serve a great pan fried haddock if you aren't looking for the deep fried aspect. (but who doesn't love a good deep fried dinner?) I recently went and had fantastic service, not too pushy or overly attentive but there when we needed it and happy to help with choices and extras! Pretty casual and not anything fancy, but hey...thats what a pub is all about! I definitely suggest trying it out!

Yelp
The Henry House, where everyone knows your name... Or maybe just mine? Anyway, this is our favourite place in the entire city. We can go as just a couple, or have a small group of people and still receive the same personalized attention. The upstairs is classy. It's for those folks who dock off the cruise ships and want to experience the lobster, and then the downstairs is for those folks who want to sip on some local brews. Actually, up or down-- you'll love it. The menu is FANTASTIC. The calamari is a sure fire munch served with an aioli, the spinach and artichoke dip always makes me order it, and the nachos come with Pineapple-- I know amazing. The main course meals are so damn good. I've had the Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, Reuben Sandwich, and my personal fav-- Steak and Mushroom Pie. I can't decide what I enjoy the most because well, everything is just so top notch. You can't really go wrong, trust me. As for food of the liquid nature-- it has great selection. It has Garrison, Propeller, and SO many more, and if you're feeling risque try ordering the sampler-- 7 types of Garrison or Propeller! If you're a beer connoisseur you will not be sorry! The building is charming and has an abundance of both character and history, and has that welcoming, warm feeling upon entering.
