Tokyo Wagyu Chef Kentaro Nakahara to Pop Up at Chicago’s the Loyalist | Eater Chicago

"A pair of Tokyo burger cafes run by the same chef, famous for a wagyu shank patty topped with tomato, lettuce, and the cafe's signature special sauce; in Japan the chef bakes his own rolls, though for an overseas pop-up he is likely to use a potato bun. The simple yet high-quality burger format served here is the template for collaborative burger events abroad." - Kat Odell

Google
A great place to get a good smash burger! It's juicy, it's greasy, it's flavorful, what's not to love? You should be prepared for a wait, and I'd recommend to just get take out as the dining area only seats around 8 people. The prices are at a bit of a premium but the quality does make up for it. I came during off peak hours and there still was a line to dine in. There is some seats outside as well but if it's hot or cold out, you don't really want to sit down outside. I ordered a Double Wagyu Burger set. Initially, I was a bit skeptical about how good this burger would be. I've seen reviews and I've had several burgers around Japan that seem to miss the mark. Not this one though. It is definitely a classic smash burger made with high quality Japanese ingredients. I'm left scratching my head reading about how people are complaining about what this is. It's tender but with bits of bite due to the char and well-done bits. Juicy and greasy as hell but with tons of flavor. The only thing that stings a little is the price, but I knew it was going to be at a slight premium before ordering. Even the "set" up-charge is a bit high. I wouldn't even bother with getting the set next time around. While the shoestring fries were pretty good, they are still the standard issue Mc D clone variety. I ended up getting the Iced Coffee for my drink, which was also standard issue Japan Coffee but would need it because this food will put you to sleep. 😆 If you like smash style burgers, Henry's Burger should be an easy choice. It's made classic-ly with high quality Japanese ingredients. Simple yet very satisfying. Just be aware of the premium price point and possible wait for seating.

Google
Not generally a burger fan, but had tried lots over my time. This one I think beats them all. As someone said - so simple but perfect. I opted for a single patty, it was was perfect size, easy to eat. Lots of smokey flavors, bun is on another level too. I am coming back here soon!

If you like Shogun Burger. You are going to simply love this. Burgers are juicy. Fries are crunchy crispy. And the music is so 🔥

Google
One of the best cheese burgers I’ve had in Tokyo. Flavorful, juicy, and just the right size. The onion rings might have even been better than the burger. (Seriously, get the onion rings!)

I went to 5 or 6 different burger restaurants in Tokyo, and this was easily the best one! The staff spoke limited English and the space was small, but I was provided friendly service and still found a place to sit, and only had to wait a few minutes before my meal was ready. I didn’t know the burger was wagyu beef at the time, but I certainly believe it! The ingredients and seasoning were delicious. The smash burger was juicy and full of flavor! I think it had a better quality and taste than most Western fast food. I also couldn’t stop eating the fries, and the drink was refreshing. If they added milkshakes to the menu, I would call this the perfect American style burger restaurant, but even without them, you should go here for a great, quick bite to eat!

Google
We've tried Henry's Burger before at another branch and wanted to get good burgers again. The seating is difficult here only because they have so few so dining in has a wait if busy. We ordered take out and ate it at our hotel and still enjoyed the burgers a lot. My wife got a solo burger and I got one with fries and we just shared the drink and fries at the hotel. Great burgers and pretty quick service!

Google
This is supposed to be one of the best burgers in Tokyo, so when I walked by, I had to give it a try. It was definitely a good burger, but don't expect it to be Earth shattering. The bun is great. It's super soft, so that there's no resistance as you bite, and it smooshes in your hand like a commercial potato bun. But it doesn't taste like it's made of chemicals in a factory. It tastes like real bread. The burger itself is a wagyu smashed burger, and you can taste the quality of the beef. The tallow is plentiful and the lacy beef edges are crisp and flavorful. All surface area that came in contact with the griddle tastes like a beefy cracker. Then, it's chewy, juicy, and tender inside. Great patties. I think they'd be even better with more salt and pepper...but I'm not complaining. I ordered a double patty with cheese, and along with their burger sauce, the cheese created a flavorful, gooey coating that dripped just enough from the sandwich. Not enough to make a mess, but enough to make me worry about making a mess. Ultimately, it's a fast food style burger, but with way higher quality ingredients than normal. It's priced like food in the US, rather than Tokyo, so even though it's still reasonable for what you get, it felt like an especially indulgent lunch. Bottom line: if you want a classic burger, give it a taste. It delivers. But if you're looking for one of those incredible mind-blowing Tokyo food experiences, this just missed the mark.

Google
Love smash burgers so I was excited to try a Japanese wagyu smashed burger. Unfortunately it was not very good and expensive. Meat was dry and had odd chewy bits. Beer was meh. Restaurant was also very dirty. It’s a social media tourist trap.

Yelp
**DISCLAIMER** This is the Harajuku location! I couldn't locate one for the location on yelp, so feel free to skip. If you find yourself in Harajuku, you must try!! After a long day of walking and shopping we were so hungry and decided to give this a try, and GOOD THING we did. It was so tasty and it literally felt like it melted away in my mouth. The best part was the view while eating. If you find yourself hungry and stumbling across this place I would def give it a try. Service was quick and at least one of the workers spoke full English. All of the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
If you're ever in Tokyo and hungering for some good old American food, look no further. Come here to get the best burger hands down. Wagyu patties cooked to perfection on the griddle giving it that nice crispy edge. The burger comes in single, double, triple, and monster which is 10 patties. I easily polished off a triple and it was so good I had a double right after. The meat shines through, juicy but not greasy. The grind on the meat is a little more coarse so it doesn't just fall apart. The lettuce is crisp and the tomato adds a nice tart sweetness. Makes my mouth water writing this review. Time to get another before heading back to the states.

Yelp
Great American style A5 Wagyu burger It is a little bit out of the way but it is worth the trip The burger uses a thousand island type dressing and a fried egg. It is so good, I ended up ordering a second burger to go. The fries are just fries. They have very limited seating. Would definitely go back if I am in Tokyo again!

Yelp
Henry's Burger is easily one of my favorite burger places in Tokyo. The shop is owned by Kentaro "Henry" Nakahara, who owns the famous Yakiniku Nakahara, a high-end yakiniku restaurant in Ichigaya, which is another one of my favorites. The quality of the meat that is used in their burgers is really good and their special sauce that is almost like a Thousand Island dressing goes really well with them. They offer single patty burgers, double, triple, and quad. You may be tempted to just get the single if it is your first time coming here, but their standard and most popular burger is the double so I would highly recommend starting out with that one. It is also not super big so you can definitely finish it. You can get the burger as is or you can make it a combo, which comes with fries and a drink. The burgers here may be a little pricey, but it's definitely worth the price. It's a small shop with only four seats at the counter and a bench though so most people do takeout.

Yelp

Yelp
This is a must. Burger was so tasty and get the regular fries. I did not try the wedge fries. Limited seating.

Yelp
Very very good burgers! Maybe the best I've had a must try if you in the Tokyo Ebisu area!

Yelp
Henry, you let us down. This place is famous for its beef, but frankly, I didn't care for this supposedly more upscale burger. I shared a double burger and with each of my four bites, I had to spit something out into my napkin-- namely, those hard, rock-like pieces you sometimes find in ground beef. Unfortunately, at Henry's, my 'sometime' was EVERYTIME. The service was also less than accommodating. What do I mean by that? Imagine asking for a knife to cut the burger in half and getting rebuffed. Strike 2 was the person cleaning the counter where my cashmere scarf lay...you'd think they would say excuse me and have me move it before spraying the cleanser...nope. How about not spraying cleanser while customers are eating in the first place? That would be a palatable decision...but not for Henry's. Strike 3 was seeing the lady in the kitchen picking at her fingernails...yeech! Not a pleasurable chew at all. Give me In 'N' Out any day over Henry's I definitely have a beef with this place.

Yelp
This is a place that you could miss even if you're walking. Then again, there are a lot of places around Tokyo that are hidden gems waiting to be found and you can add Henry's Burger this to the list. As fate would have it, on the day I ate at Henry's Burger, my wife and I were in the Daikanyama area planning to have a late lunch at another restaurant. As we were walking to the restaurant we missed a turn by about fifty feet and as we were back tracking we walked past the front door to Henry's. Well, it turns out the restaurant we wanted to eat at stopped serving lunch ten minutes after we arrived and the only other food options in the general vicinity were cafes just serving pastries. Fortunately for us we had passed by Henry's and were able to go back there, and unbeknownst to us at the time, get some really delicious burgers. The restaurant isn't very spacious but that goes with the territory for a lot of restaurants in Tokyo. The counter style seating has space for only four people so if you're going at the peak times you may not have a place to sit and eat and if you have a backpack or shoulder bag with you, there's no place to put it so you're going to have to keep it on you while you're eating. Upon first glance at the menu and not knowing that the burgers were made with A5 black wagyu I had a bit of sticker shock and remarked to my wife about the burgers being a bit pricey but since she's Japanese and read the description under the burgers, she pointed out that the burgers were made with some high quality ingredients. So to make things easy they have one type of burger but 3 options in a combo meal that comes with fries(just a bit thicker than shoe string fries) and a soft drink or bottled water(Fiji or San Pellegrino). The first option is the single patty. Second is a double patty and third is a quad with cheddar cheese. I opted to get the single and had them put a slice of cheddar for an extra 50 yen. Looking back on it now, even though the single patty burger was filling, I should have gotten the double burger and added cheese because the meat was so tasty and cooked perfectly and everything else about the burger, the sauce, the bun, the lettuce and tomato used was perfection. As I'm typing out this review I'm just thinking about going back there again because it was that good. I hope Japan doesn't declare a state of emergency and force the restaurants to close up because I'm going to need to get another one of those burgers before I head back to the US. PS They do take credit card. I used my Visa.

Yelp
Great burger but the customer service, the wait time, and the seating was deplorable...

Yelp
This was the last stop of the day for the obligatory wagyu burger which was insanely good. Simple menu and seats only 4 so no time wasting. Ranks right up there with the best of LA. After I gobbled down the double burger I then ordered a takeaway for later in my hotel room. Big mistake as it's never as nice reheated in the microwave.

Yelp
I read about this place as one of the better burger joints in Tokyo so I was very curious. I happened to be in the area so I figured a break from Japanese food wouldn't be a bad idea. The single burger was pretty small. Of course, this is Japan so the portion is probably normal. The bread was light and airy. The toppings were standard: cheese, lettuce, and tomato. It was a solid burger. I liked it much better than another famous joint in town. Wagyu beef? I believe so. I kind of wish I ordered a double burger.

Yelp
This place is small. I mean small. There is a counter with only 4 seats. On the menu there are 3 combo you can choose from along same things a la cart. All combos come with soft drinks and fries. Wagyu burger (single) with 1 patty. The patty was not patted dense enough so it kinda feel like grounded beef between the bun which is brioche. The beef tasted fresh and it's yummy. The sauce they used was good and there was a slice or 2 of tomatoes and Boston lettuce. The fries are cut into very thin sticks so they are very crispy. If you like chunky fries then they are not for you. Overall it's good and worth to try.

Yelp
I really liked this burger joint. So much so that I went back twice. Service was great and fast. Although relatively small, seats became available quickly. But for me the real ticket was the burger. I got the B combo which was a double burger with fries and drink and let me tell you it did not dissapoint. This juiciness of this burger in every bite was the main reason I came back for more. It must be that 100% wagyu. Ohhhh and those buns. Tasty indeed. I can't wait to revisit when I come back to Tokyo.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Little pricey at 900¥ however the people are great. The restaurant is a little hole in the wall place so tough to find
google avatar

Yelp
This tiny little burger place wedged in Daikanyama only has seats for four people, but you know what? It's worth the wait. The menu is simple, like the West Coast staple in and out. You can order a single or a double. For 1,300 Yen, you get their delicious double that's one of the best burgers I've had in Japan with their delicious fries that I couldn't stop eating. If you're in the area, and looking for a good burger, I can't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
Ehhh. Rather go to Nakahara. Burger was a little too salty, the patty itself. Too overcooked.

Brandon S.

Yelp
I remember seeing this place the last time I was in Akihabara and told myself the next time I'm craving a burger, I'd make the trip. Luckily it's only 7 stations (15-20 min) from home. Some westerners might be discouraged by the size of the patty, but trust me it's the perfect size, and you will be sufficiently satisfied if you order the combo. I only wish i got a beer instead of ginger ale with mine lol. This was my first Wagyu beef burger, and I must say I think I'm addicted now. すごい美味しいです!

Jonas B.

Yelp
One of best burgers in Tokyo. Simple but you can really taste the quality of the ingredients. Especially the chopped meat in the patty rather than minced add an extra touch. Fries are crunchy and delicious too. Only drawback is that there's only 4 seats in the shop.
