Henssler Henssler

"Set in a typical Hamburg location between the Holzhafen and Altona fish market, the restaurant of well-known TV chef Steffen Henssler stands amid a plethora of seafood and fishmongers. The interior is slick and smart, with a nice and lively laid-back atmosphere. The 20m-wide kitchen serves modern interpretations of sushi in many variations, as well as dishes such as teriyaki-style Faroe salmon or rump steak from the lava grill. Senior chef Werner Henssler also gets involved in the service. It is advisable to make a reservation, whether for lunch or dinner." - Michelin Inspector

"German celebrity chef Steffen Henssler has run this stylish restaurant with his father since 2004, alongside other popular local spots like Le Délice, Petit Délice, and Zeik. Here, he focuses on the intersection of California and Japanese cuisine, sourcing only the freshest ingredients from the Hamburg Fish Market next door. Lunch dishes range from beef tartare to salmon sashimi, while the dinner menu changes weekly but always includes signature items like spicy tuna tempura and crispy duck rolls. Grab a seat overlooking the open kitchen and 46-foot-long sushi bar, or dine outside on the terrace while enjoying views over the Elbe."

Surprisingly Impressed – and I’m Not Even a Sushi Fan! I’ll admit it upfront—I’m not usually into sushi. But there should be a good reason why this restaurant is already decades long.. The quality of the fish was top-notch, the presentation was beautiful, and the flavors were incredibly fresh and well-balanced. What really stood out was the variety—they always have something new!The staff was super friendly and happy to make recommendations, which made the whole experience even better. And they even decorated the table for my boyfriend's bday! So cute! If you’re a die-hard sushi lover, you’ll be in heaven. Highly recommend!

All in all a wonderful experience with very delicious food. The sushi was definitely special and something I never had before. The service was very forthcoming and truly professional. Even though the dining room was getting fuller by the minute, the service was right on time. The Prices were a little bit high for my taste, but not uncommon, especially in that area. The quality of the food they presented justified the prices anyhow at the end. Definitely recommendable.

The service is good, all the staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is good, nice ''industrial'' modern style. The food.......it's pretty much ''Europeanized'' sushi. For German/European standard, it's good sushi. But for Japanese standard, that's too much sause on top. Eating tempura with mayo and dipping sauce, not with dashi wasn't really for Japanese. We ordered the MIX sushi plate, all the sushi and sashimi were covered with sause, which kills the actual taste of fish, which was a bit dissapointing. Using paprika for sushi is just not a good idea. Paprika has too strong taste for sensitive sushi. Sake was good, goes well with sushi. It was very nice to have a wet hand towel, I felt like being in Japan.

Great place! Very good service, the only thing that made me question 5 stars is host who does not speak English. But all the waiters do speak English! Atmosphere and interior is interesting, but a bit not cozy. Food was great, a bit overpriced, as, for example, crème brûlée was not breaking properly. Overall good impression, strong 4 ⭐️

Google
Tasty food, very good service, but somehow slow (we had to wait quite long to get our dishes). The interior has an interesting concept of an open kitchen but strikes as a bit informal/ not very cozy. The only downside was that we ordered a choice of two menus, but there was no menu card on the table and we could only see the options in a hand written note in German (not all guests could speak German) and that hardened the ordering process.

Google
The best sushi I have eaten in Germany. Really good, be aware that the price is a little bit high but it is worth it. I will come back for sure. Everything is fresh and yummy. Make a reservation because a lot of people go there , no wonder it is so delicious. Staff very friendly. Perfect for special moments.

Best sushi I ever ate. The staff was really nice and polite. We had the recommended menu which was just perfect. Absolutely nothing to complain about. I can’t wait to go there again!

Yelp
Wow! That's all I can say- this place was phenomenal! The ambiance, the staff and the food- OMG the food! Some of the best and freshest Sushi I have ever had. The ambiance of the place is fantastic- load but not too much, the staff great and watching the chefs cook in open kitchen helped make a great meal even better. 3 of us ate a literal boatload of Sushi and had a very nice bottle of wine, and it was only €50 a head.

Yelp
Was there yesterday, February 16, 2019. Had traveled from Sweden and booked a table several months before. The food gets a strong four but the overall impression made them get two stars. There were so many mistakes in the service of the person who served us. She didn't smile, first of all. We got the impression we were not welcome. We got bread but the restaurant couldn't fix drinks that were not on the menu. While drinking our pre-drink we got the starter. We didnt have time to enjoy either pre-drink or the starters seperatly. At this time the main course came in. A Henssler mix - their specialty, with sashimi, sushi, tempura. We still hadn't finished our drink, nor our starters. Now we also lacked the beer we were supposed to have with the starter. Our waitress did not present the main course, which was strange because there was a mix of a lot of different components. The waitress was still quite unengaged. She forgot the drink for the main course. We had to ask for it twice before it arrived after 30 minutes. Then we had come halfway through our main course. When we had finished our entire dinner - from the moment we were seated at our table to we got the check - it had been 50 mins. We dissapointed and went back to our hotel for coffee and desert.

Yelp
Service is very slow. Took us over two hours since we sat down to finally get our food. Unbelievable. This is on a Tuesday night. Food was mediocre at best. Will not return.

Yelp
My husband managed to book a later dinner reservation to celebrate my birthday. Our reservation was at about 9:30 and the place was still pack. Even with a reservation we still had to wait about 15 minute or so to be seated. Once seated I saw that my husband left a note for them that it was my birthday and they had little happy birthday confetti on the our table which was a nice touch. After that I really didn't have a good experience with the service or the food sadly. Our waiter forgot our appetizers and Everytime we ordered drinks the drink servers looked confused and always ended at the wrong table first before realizing the drinks actually should go to ours. For our meal, we decided on the omakase which was like a 4 course chefs choice menu. Everything was a bit too oversauced for my taste and so the only dish I enjoyed and thought was unique was the dessert (which was more German than Japanese). And when it came time to pay the bill, our server was nowhere to be found...so we had to flag down a different waitress to get the bill. Overall, I probably won't be going back here especially not for a good sushi fix. It's overpriced for what it is and is not my vibe unfortunately.

Yelp
The food was only mediocre and although the staff was friendly, it was clear most of them were inexperienced. We ordered a lot and shared the dishes: Rump steak (medium rare): this steak was undercooked (although I preferred it that way), it wasn't actually medium rare, but it was pretty good. Rib eye steak (medium rare): this steak was pretty tasteless. Caesar salad: had a weird flavor going on. Wasn't traditional caesar salad (in a bad way). Potato Wasabi Puree: interesting, but the charred avocado on top didn't do much. Grilled white asparagus: these were pretty good. Had a nice asian flavor. Marinated beefsashimi: this was mostly raw beef with a sear on the outside. There was some sort of fruit the same color as the meat, which was a surprise to bite into. This was interesting. Sashimi from loupnde mer (with grilled watermelon and san deniele ham): this wasn't so great. Didn't really work as a dish. Southern apple tuna roll (with tunasashimi, granny smith apple, avocado, basil, and soy caramel): this was pretty good. Interesting, but you couldn't really taste the apple, it might as well have been cucumber. Salmon Hand Roll: this was okay. It had a lot of mayo and not so much salmon. California Roll: decent. Nothing special. Chicken Skewer Yakitori: drenched in syrup, but the onions and chicken were okay. Wouldn't go back again, but it wasn't terrible.

Yelp
Nicely situated along the Elbe and the sous-chef that started this dining fusion concept used to be associated with the Landhaus Scherrer from what I was told. It is a bit out of the way to reach if you do not have a car, as the nearest public transportation by train is Landungsbrücken or taking a bus (112) along the Elbechausse. Once you arrive, the place is neatly organized, however due to lack of space and popularity of its infamous reputation, they pack tables in a bit too tightly. It is one great room with everyone lined up so closely, I can hear my neighbor chewing their salad. Not a good seating situation for the claustrophobic, however, the food is so nice and service impeccably attentive, that one easily forgives the spacial limitations and enjoys the intimacy of the surroundings instead. All sushi is delicious, I mean, really. If you love sushi, order by favorite ingredients, as we all have our personal favorites that we crave consistently, but if feeling more adventurous, one can do no wrong here. Fresh, tasty, exotic rolls, that satisfy. You pay for sushi quality, so expect a reasonably pricey bill at the end of your meal, particularly if you are the type to go Rambo like myself and order with big eyes and a curious stomach :) When sushi is of a higher caliber of quality, I often opt for sashimi, so not to waste my low carb diet on rice and extra sauces when the fish alone tastes marvelous enough with a spot of low sodium soy sauce and swipe of wasabi for good measure, topped with a ginger garnish! Sehr Lecker... If with a friend, do some fresh light appetizers, order a variety platter, and a bottle of Riesling, followed up with a warm chocolate dessert if available. You will leave feeling like you just fell from sushi heaven. I normally take in this experience with a friend, when we feel like having a nice, quiet, special sushi dinner away from the Mitte madness. My only complaint? I wish it was not so far from my home and off of a main public transportation route, but tis the price one pays for the views that can only be witnessed next to the Elbe River.

Yelp
Enjoyed an excellent mid week lunch here. Helped by a bright spring day, it felt great to be down by the water in this large, open modern restaurant. The whole feeling was of space and light. We were happy to take the recommended specials - great sushi to start with, followed by a main fish course. I then indulged in ice cream, deep fried! The service was friendly but unobtrusive. Great place for business lunches.

Yelp
Value for money: far to expensive Service: needs training, to pushy Location: interesting Food: good to average Been there a few more times invited on business expenses, the concept is interesting so is the location, but thats where the good news ends. Food quality and preparation varies and for my taste it's a notch above average. I used to live for several years in Japan and in California and comparing H&H to the benchmark the verdict is a simple one. How to improve: we all know money is made with beverages: Train your staff to stop being pushy. I am the guest and I will let you know if and when I want a new bottle of whatever. Train your staff on products you offer and of course on the daily menue. To stay polite I will not post the answers I received on simple questions. Yes you have a nice winelist but where is some "exquisit" sake to go with ...? Lastly: attitude ... You want to play in the major league? Well you certainly have the right foundation, but there there is plentiful to improve if you really want to get there. Treat EVERY guest with respect not only your so called whatever VIPs. H&H has a good name in Hamburg I was told, but a name I can not eat, smell or drink for that matter. You guys can do far better. At present it is only 3/5 stars with the third one for the potential. Will be there again in late May. Hopefully we can see some kind of improvement.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant. The food and service are exquisite, but served in a lively and warm atmosphere that could teach stuffy restaurants a thing or two. The sushi was fabulous and the sashimi platters really zinging with freshness. Great combinations of flavours from classic to fusion and great portions, couldn't believe it was all for us to eat. Great for couples or for business entertaining and can't wait to go back next time in hamburg.

Yelp
Enough has been written about this place. The food is great. I like the room because of the minimal styling. You can't beat the sushi in Hamburg. The location is easy to reach and parking is not a problem. My one major gripe about this place is the service. These are the most arrogant waiters and waitresses I've run acorss in Hamburg. They start to annoy you when you are making a reservation and they annoy through to the end until you leave. This really diappoints considering how good the rest is.

Yelp
Fabulous sushi! We could not sit outside as we arrived 5 people instead of the 4 we had booked for but there was no problem as during lunch hour there was plenty of space inside (apparently booking is a must for evenings). We were seated close to the kitchen/counter which was a little noisy. You can order a mixed platter to share or if you are picky and a vegetarian like me you can go for individual rolls. The 3 I ordered on recommendation were waaaay too much, go for two if you are real hungry and one for a snack! They have a veggie roll with tempura inside which adds a yummy crunch and extra taste, the other veggie roll I had was kind of bland in comparison. There are also other hot food options if you like neither sushi nor fish, and this is where they are losing one star for me as there's meat, there's fish, but there's nothing vegetarian (this, and the one "boring" roll I had). The restaurant has a nice atmosphere too and can seat larger groups so if you want to dine out with sushi lovers it's the perfect place.

Yelp
Great food and service. Not so great when it comes to location. But we go to restaurants for the food and not the location ;)
