Herbivore - Review - Bridgeport - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Herbivore in Bridgeport deserves it's own Las Vegas show because the vegan counter-service spot is a master of illusion. Big Max is an almost identical (dare we say, better) version of its source of inspiration with meaty Impossible patties, creamy special sauce, and melty “cheese.” The crispy fried “chicken” is delicious in every form—in a sandwich, on top of alfredo pasta, or in snackable nugget form. Though the tiny space only has a few tables and counter seats and gets kind of busy, most people are just ordering take-out, so it’s pretty easy to dine in." - John Ringor

My brother and stopped in last week and I’m glad we did! We got the Big Max burger which was DELICIOUS, the chopped cheese, also DELICIOUS and the loaded fries which were pretty good. We did try the Pizza Puf since it’s a popular item, but it was a NO for us!! It lacked flavor and the filling did not wow me. The fried Oreos were great though! The service was good too!! And they have some nice outdoor seating in the back!

Do NOT come here! Save your money! I came on a Friday night around 5pm. I ordered the Big Max, buffalo wings, and save the animal style fries. I am extremely disappointed. First of all I asked the girl if it was a long wait and she said I would only have to wait 10-15 minutes and I ended up waiting close to 45 minutes. So if you think you're going to just go in there and order and be in and out guess again. The save the animal style fries were very soggy and mushy, you can very clearly see in my picture. For $9 I expect crispy french fries and they were so mushy I didn't even eat them. And I was really looking forward to some crispy french fries. The Buffalo wings were such a small portion for $10 I expected a larger portion but they only gave me 10 wing bite size. You're basically paying $1 per bite ANd they weren't even covered in the buffalo sauce. They just poured a little bit of buffalo sauce on the little red parchment paper underneath and then dumped the dry wing bites on there, there was no sauce covering them at all. If you look at the picture I posted you can see there's hardly any buffalo sauce. They also taste like any other buffalo wing bite you could get frozen at the store or at any wing joint I would not recommend wasting your money on these. The Big Max was good and I don't even like Big Mac's from McDonald's but for $15 nah rip off again, at the most maybe $10. I won't be returning here for two reasons, the main one being because the girl was dishonest about the wait time. A lot of people were waiting and when they would ask her about their order she kept telling the same thing to everybody five more minutes. And the second being because my fries were soggy. If you would have said the wait time is about 20-30 minutes I wouldn't have ordered. I feel like I wasted my money on the fries bc I didn't eat them due to being so soggy and mushy And I wasn't about to go back there and wait another 20 minutes for a new order. I also feel like I wasted my money on the buffalo wings, such a small portion and tasted like any other buffalo wing. The burger I don't mind since it was my first time trying a vegan big max but it's not worth it to go back.

Ok…who ever didn’t give this place a 5 star rating and knocked them down to 4.9 is just wrong. This place is great. It’s around the corner from our studio at Bridgeport Art Center. I was excited that a place called herbivore moved in! The menu is fire, the food is delicious and is made to order. The staff is so friendly. It’s all meat alternatives and I haven’t had a Big Mac since I was in high school and I was a little reluctant to order the Big Max. Wow…what a perfect blast of guilt free nostalgia! I swear it tastes like a Big Mac but better than I remember! The fries were so perfect and crispy! There was a deep fried Oreo for a tasty after dinner snack!

Chef max is a gem. He’s got a code he’s living by, he’s classically trained, he’s got an amazing energy and checks up on all of his customers to make sure they’re enjoying. His staff is hard-working and friendly. He asks for feedback - he genuinely wants to make a great restaurant and he’s already done it. The food is great even though it’s vegan. It’s nice to know there’s somewhere to bring vegetarian friends where they’ll have a lot of options and EVERYONE will enjoy it. Try the burgers and the buffalo wings. You’ll forget they’re vegan, I can almost guarantee it.

We recently saw this place on a drive through Bridgeport and based on the reviews, knew we would have to check it out. Tonight was the night! After hearing the owner plug the Big Max to another guest in front of us, we had to try it. OMG. This is the best vegan burger I've ever had! The Single Burger and the Save the Animal Style Fries are just as amazing. Max, the owner, is soooo sweet and helpful and takes pride in his business! Definitely will be regulars at this spot- they have a great patio in the back as well. Thanks Max and team!

I absolutely love Herbivore. This was my first visit to the restaurant. I got a single burger, loaded fries, and fried oreo. The burger was delicious. I loved the taste of the oreo. My husband hot a pizza so I ate someof that also 😋. The next time I will definitely try the Big Max.

You don’t need to be vegan to enjoy this! Just drop in sometime when you feel like a burger. I’m not vegan and I bring non-vegan friends and have to remind them at the end it wasn’t beef or dairy. The buns taste buttery, the cheese tastes rich, and the sandwich looks beautiful. It looks like a burger from a commercial - you can see in my pic - perfectly layered. 100% worth the price for the experience. The “chicken” Alfredo is also amazing - I don’t know how they get it so creamy but it tastes great. Try the chili fries too!

I've loved Chef Max's dishes ever since I had the privilege of stopping by the pop ups at The Plant and the kitchen near Wicker Park. Everything is made with care and whether you go for the Big Max burger or the pasta, it's true soul and comfort food. Looking forward to what's to come at the new brick and mortar on the South Side!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing vegan restaurant!! The hours are very limited so you must plan your visit. The chicken sando is nostalgic goodness!! It is a cute and quaint establishment with excellent service!

Yelp
Whenever I visit Chicago I always check out a few vegan restaurants and decided to give this place a try because I saw a vegan blogger post about it. Guy at register was very attentive and kind! My friend ordered the Big Max sandwich, it was very good. I ordered the pizza puff, potato skins, and chicken sandwich, and a sprite (which I ordered after I purchased my food and it was $5). Yes, $5 for a bottle of pop. And unfortunately (my items fell flat. Total was $65. Big Max - 8/10 Pizza Puff - 2/10 Chicken Sandwich- 5/10 Potato Skins 6/10 Insanely overpriced food that was sub par. Pizza puff was bland and lacked flavor. Chicken sandwich texture was ok, bun tasted stale. Potato skins were average. Will not be returning, but wish these folks the best...

Yelp
Went way out of my way to try this place and let me tell you, it's worth a trip! I'm far from vegan, but I love seeing what kind of magic a skilled vegan cook can whip up and Chef Max is just brilliant. Went with a friend and we got a Big Max burger, arancini, chili crisp fries, a pizza puff and the sweet soy wings. Holy cow was it good! You would never know the burger wasn't meat. The pizza puff hit that secret spot. The wings with wasabi ranch were impeccable, so satisfying, and I could eat a big ol bowl full of them! Based on the strength of everything we tried, I can't wait to go back and taste some new offerings. The pasta dishes sounded amazing, and I saw a new burger and chick'n sandwich that looked incredible. And I have to try the black sesame panna cotta. This is a small restaurant and it seems like they're doing really well! Feel free to wait for your order in Maria's next door, and you can even take your food in and eat at Maria's, which is exactly what we did. The drinks paired so well with the delicious creations. This is a special place, perfect for vegans and omnivores alike.

Yelp
We wanted to love this place, but the food was just so-so. We are vegetarians, so the plant based concept sounded great. I ordered the chiquin sandwich and my spouse had "The Don". We also ordered fries and a rice krispy bar. I think vegans who miss McDonald's would love the food here because the chikn sandwich tasted exactly like a Burger King or McDonald's chikn sandwich, right down to the squishy sesame seed bun, mayo and shredded iceberg lettuce. They really need to work on their fries though, they were undercooked and cut too thick. "The Don" was like a grinder with faux roast beef and jardinera. It was ok, the faux beef was good but the bread needs some work, it tasted like it had been refrigerated. The rice krispy bar was a nice surprise and actually pretty good. I didn't expect it to be, because I've never gotten them right using vegan marshmallows, but it was tasty.

Yelp
Ahh! Their G/VK (ghost/virtual kitchen) was in Logan Square. This is their first B & M location. Also, you can bring the food to Maria's P.G. which is next door. The staff and service is great. I'll be back for that Pizza Puff! PS. The sandwiches come A la Carte.

Yelp
A must stop when visiting my hometown Chicago! Chef Max is a classically trained chef and you can taste the love he puts into this food! Everything is homemade, even grows his own herbs. Vegan or not, definitely support this Chicago small business. Menu changes frequently so there's always something new to try.

Yelp
I actually seen all the pictures of the food before they had settled into their restaurant and wanted to try! I am not sure if I came to late and they were closing, but this food was disgusting. I tried to pick at it, but it made me sick! The lobster roll had tons of salt on the bun which is why the bread is picked off. The inside may have been enjoyable and this may have been somewhat eatable if the bread was plain! The pasta has NO flavor at all! I mean the sauce tasted like cheap tomato sauce out the can. I would have eaten this maybe even had they opted for Rao, or a poplar tomato sauce off the shelf. The front cashier was nice, but I will not be back and what happened to the suburb food they offered before!

Yelp
Look. Are you looking for a plant-based version of a Big Mac? They nail it 100%. Are you looking for some excellent fries? These are some of the best I've had in a long time? Are you looking for some deep-fried Oreos? That's a rather specific request, but Herbivore has got them going for you. It's Vegan Fast Food, as if that's the vibe you want, you'll get that here for sure.

Yelp
I was recently went here on an Eater assignment and it was absolutely delicious! Chef Max really flexes his skills with this undetectable vegan menu. Will be back! (The risotto and panna cotta are next level)

Yelp
Service was great, quick, efficient. The big mac burger was everything i dreamt it to be. i cannot do the impossible/beyond burgers usually bc i wayy too much thick meat. like hello!! im a vegetarian !! (ik everyone orders for different reasons shut up) sooo yummy loved it. for my other girlies w consistency/texture issues -- the buffalo wings taste almost exactly like tyson anytizers --take it as you will. little gummy for my liking. otherwise good! chz fries rock if you like super wet ones. philly was good... maybe its the chicago in me but had to add hot Giardiniera at home! overall loved & glad I came before they closed--worth checking out! get the big mac :)
